Rakos isn't really a farmer. Bellamy definitely isn't a minstrel. Sheltered, sickly Prince Bellamy dreams of adventure--but not like this. Captured in enemy territory, his royal identity will get him killed. When his dangerously attractive fellow prisoner asks who he is, Bellamy claims to be a minstrel. Except he can't carry a tune to save his life. He panicked, okay? Rakos was a dragonrider until betrayal landed him in chains. Now, he knows two things for certain: he can't trust anyone, and he wants his dragon back. When the fragile minstrel asks who he is, Rakos claims he's a farmer. When Bellamy begs for help reaching the border, Rakos refuses. Until he can't resist how much Bellamy needs him. Stormy nights and deadly masquerades forge Rakos and Bellamy's unlikely partnership into something more. Something exhilarating. Rakos treats Bellamy like a person, not a weak, untouchable prince, even as he protects him. But Rakos's enemies are circling in, and that very protection might be Bellamy's undoing. Prince in Disguise is a high fantasy gay romance, with double secret identities, Only One Bed, and a teleporting ferret. The Perilous Courts series is best read in order, but each book follows a different prince and his Happily Ever After.
Tavia Lark writes m/m fantasy romance and erotica. Her favorite romance tropes include hurt/comfort, sharing a bed, and enemies to lovers. She writes from a sunny little apartment with the constant "help" of her fluffy cat. He just really likes typing, okay.

I really like Bellamy and Rakos is a perfect match. And the dragon is super nice and amusing. The adventure journey that Bellamy and Rakos have to undertake is interesting and you get a good insight into the magic on which this world is built. I like how a relationship develops under the guise of false identities. It's light and without much drama even when the true identities come to light. I really like that, because I don't like melodrama at all. I absolutely love the growth that Bellamy is undergoing. And the unconditional support and fascination Rakos has for him. Could that have been any more detailed? Yes absolutely, as usual stories like this could always be better fleshed out in my opinion. But that's okay, you don't have to overdo it. What I find confusing are the intrigues that lead to Rakos' dropping out. It was all a bit vague and will probably be explained more in the course of the series, but at this stage it's rather clumsily written. A minor nuisance that I'll just ignore for now.
“What are you reading?” Rakos asks, unlacing his boots. Bell looks up with wide, innocent eyes. “An adventure novel. About a notorious thief and an innocent young mage who gets taken hostage by him. And then—” “Smut. You’re reading smut.” “Very adventurous smut,” Bell says happily. 🥰🥰🥰
A fun and fierce adventure, set in a picturesque new fantasy world. There are Dragons and dragon riders. Lots of political intrigues, conspiracies and betrayals. And a passionate love story in the centre of all of these that will make you giddy with delight...
Bellamy, the youngest prince of Silas is returning home after many years of staying abroad to tend his delicate health. No outsider knows about his sudden return; Bellamy has no intention of changing that. Then one day, his pet (whose name is Bastard) wanders off and the prince chases after her. Unfortunately, they loses their way back. Soon Bellamy is taken captive by some goons. Lost and captured- alone in enemy territory, Bellamy’s true identity will get him killed, or worse. He has always longed for adventure...but not like this. When his smoking-hot fellow prisoner asks who he is, the prince adopts a disguise and claims to be a minstrel.
Rakos was the rising star of the Draskoran dragon riders until betrayal landed him in chains. He knows two things for certain: he can’t trust anyone, and he wants his dragon back. When a pretty, fragile minstrel asks who he is, Rakos claims he’s a farmer.
Bellamy and Rakos reaches to an agreement, Rakos needs Bellamy's magic to get back his dragon. In return, he promises to help Bellamy to reach the border. This is an alliance formed out of desperation, but soon enough both of them start wishing that the partnership would blossom into something more....
second read August 24 This totally held up for me. I still adore Rakos and Bellamy and their chemistry together. The very definition of a comfort reread for me ❤️. Thank you to this book for being such a fun shining light when everything else I’ve been reading has underwhelmed me so much.
first read May 24 Do you ever feel like an author reaches inside of your head and just plucks out a story that feels like it has been written just for your tastes? Cause that was this one for me.
Bellamy, is the third and youngest Prince of Silaise, has always been prone to illness and headaches, and as the baby of the family, he has been sheltered from realities of the outside world. On a return trip home, Bellamy’s ship is forced to find shelter from a magical storm in enemy land and whilst there, he is accidentally captured by soldiers and imprisoned in a local fort. Whilst prisoner, Bellamy meets Rakos, an infamous dragon rider, who has been kidnapped and framed as a treasonous deserter. Whilst they make their escape, they both realise the danger of the other knowing their true identities, with Bellamy masquerading as a minstrel and Rakos (poorly) pretending to be a farmer wanted for tax evasion (idiots. Bless them). Together they embark on a journey to reunite Rakos with his dragon and return Bellamy to his home in Silaise.
This was just so much fun and I just flew through this. Bellamy and Rakos just have such great chemistry together and really bring out the best in each other. It’s one of my favourite things when you see characters who are sheltered and insecure grow into their own confidence and competency and the growth in Bellamy over this book is just a delight.
Also, if you love the ‘one something’ trope this will be good soup 😂😂 one bed, one horse, one tree, one dragon 😂😂 you just can’t keep these two apart lol.
I read book 1 in this series last year, and I remember being surprised at just how much fun this world and these characters were, but I think I had forgotten JUST HOW MUCH FUN THIS WORLD AND CHARACTERS ARE. This cover undersells just how great this story is.
A fantastic low stakes magical fantasy adventure romance ❤️
God it’s so easy to read 300 pages in a few hours when you’re HAVING JUST THE BEST TIME!!
Original Review, February 2023:
17 stars.
I said the first book in this series was one of my favourite books of the year and this one is going to slide in right before it.
This book held me in its grip the entire time. I don’t even know if I breathed. I feel dizzy.
Bellamy and Rakos were incredible together. They’re involved in adventure after adventure right from page one, with a perfect slow-ish burn between two people pretending to be people they aren’t and just trying to get home. Their love and chemistry were bursting off the pages like fireworks and their willingness to protect each other at all costs was hot as fuck. Bell and Rakos were also delightfully funny and adorable with each other and I had a few good laughs that sparked a cough since I’m recovering from a cold.
I SERIOUSLY loved this book. I’m so happy right now. My only complaint is a random chapter from Julian’s POV in the middle of the book. It was a bit jarring but hey I’m always happy to hear from my book one love.
Great book, great characters, great plot, great romance… with one great, big exception (and one that honestly had me debating bumping this down to a 3 star):
Chapter 12 is randomly told from Julien’s POV. I cannot stand random POVs. And I knew this was coming. Tavia Lark polled on her FB group and said this would “solve a plot issue”. The thing is, it doesn’t.
Had I not been told it was to solve a plot issue, or had I been told it was just because she wanted to have a random POV from one of her previous MCs, maybe I wouldn’t have been so irked by it. But whatever information is given from Julien’s POV is delivered later in the book . Not to mention it spoiled the surprise of that encounter.
On top of that, it is mentioned numerous times how much Bellamy is coddled by his family, and how protective they are of him. So, one would assume they would be worried, therefore Julien’s POV is just pointing out the obvious.
In fact, two chapters after Julien’s POV, Bellamy’s POV shares that he has been missing for a month and that: His family must be worried sick. At this point, it could have been something like They’ve likely sent someone to find him by now. Hopefully someone capable of subterfuge and who will blend in, because the last thing Bellamy needs is to start a warTada, done! No plot issue, with a side of surprise cameo.
If the plot issue that was the trigger for Julien’s POV was , I have issues with that, since a) Julien’s POV still doesn’t lend anything to that plot issue and b) the fact that .
Also, the slight editing issue of a lute later on being typo’d as a flute… which are two entirely different instruments.
“Pay attention to what people do, instead of just what they telll you. Words are just what people want you to hear”.
“-Because I left something important, and I didn’t realize it until now +What? -You”.
Obviamente recomendado.
“I’ll go anywhere you want me to go. Even to certain death at your family’s hand. ”
Another fun and romantic fantasy romance! This one is more adventure-plot based compared to the previous book, which was more interpersonal/intrigue. I liked the shift - it balances well within the series.
I enjoyed the characters a lot too, Bellamy and Rakos were very amusing together, and of course I loved Sarka. I hope there's more dragon-y stuff in the next book too, this one did some intriguing openings. I also always love the plant magic, so much fun!
My one major issue was the random Julien POV chapter in the middle of the book. It didn't add anything, and it actually was detrimental to my reading enjoyment. It interrupted the story of Bellamy/Rakos and their travels, didn't add anything, and then sort of spoiled a moment (minor, not a plot spoiler) later in the book that would have been fun to guess on for it's whole two pages or whatever. Basically, a small thing but it was very jarring to me to have that sudden POV switch and gain negative value from it.
Overall, I had a lot of fun reading this! Unique characters, fun magic, new country (pls map!! i love map), new lore...what's not to love!
I received this ARC from the author in exchange for my honest review. All the opinions are my own.
4.25 stars. Several laugh out loud moments in this which is definitely a plus. High steam which is another plus. The romance was allllllmost too sappy and the love/obsession was alllllmost too insta for my taste, but overall I really enjoyed this. Some great side characters too and I'm going to check right now and see if maybe they have their own books? Especially Ludvik just because of the scene between him and Teodor at the bloodmasque.
ETA: So apparently no book for Ludvik, and now I'm also kind of interested in Elinor- who also doesn't get a book. Once again, I am wondering if I should try writing fan fiction....
Reread - I love Bell so much. This one is tied for favorite with Whisper & Julien in the first book. Soft fantasy vibes.
-----------
I just... love this. Love this series, love this family of princes, love this romance. Just, chef's kiss.
Sweetheart Bell, a dragon (!!!) and ferret, double hidden identities, political maneuvering, adorable little moments between Rakos and Bell. Emotional head massage, magic sharing, on the road shenanigans. How dare Lark make me love these two just as much as Julien and Whisper!!
This series is quickly becoming a comfort read for me. I loved this installment as well and Bellamy and Rakos are just adorable.
I feel like this book could be a bit longer so that the beginning of their relationship would be a bit more fleshed out. However, I also appreciate the shorter reads, as I don‘t think that a gazillion side plots are always necessary. Still, some things from book 1 remain unresolved and I‘m eager to see where this is going.
Bellamy was utterly adorable and I was afraid Rakos would be this big badass dragonrider who would treat Bellamy like crap, but no such thing happened.
I know some people have mentioned the lack of relationship angst in this series, but I absolutely love it. There was plenty of potential for angst,
Low-angst, but still plenty of intrigue. And dragons, let’s not forget the dragons.
I quite enjoyed this one! Fun sequel following the youngest of the princes, with lots of delightful fantasy shenanigans. I enjoyed the characters and the build between them, and just overall had a lovely time. I've been quite enjoying this author's fantasy books!
«—Gracias —dice Bellamy simplemente.
3.5 - Light and easy, enjoyable but heavy on predictable tropes, not particularly complex. I remember absolutely zilch about book 1, couldn’t even recall the mcs when reading this one and I suspect the same will be for this in a few weeks. I enjoyed the bones of the overall plot and world building but I needed more depth to the characters and their relationship. This was fun and sweet but for a more complex fantasy I’d choose a different author.
The good + Double hidden identity + The way they learned to trust each other + The growth of their feelings + Bellamy becoming his own person and gaining a lot of confidence + Rakos trusting Bell when he tells him his limits + Blinkmink + Both of them considering treason for love + Evil Tree Man + Their reactions to finding out each other's true identities + Bell's absolute excitement about mundane things + The compatibility of their magics + No magic cure for Bellamy's headaches
The neutral o I was confused by the appearance of a chapter from Julian's POV. Why?
The bad - The time spent in Silaise was much too short. I wanted more Bell standing up for himself now that he learned who he really is when he's not being coddled
Quotes x "I'm a wandering minstrel. And I'm, um. Wandering." x "You're really reckless for someone who won't eat blackberries." "They were highly suspicious blackberries." x "No real injuries. Just convenient, sexy injuries that need to be cured with sex."
I was a little afraid to start this book because I loved the first book, and what if this one didn't live up to that? But boy, it did! I loved this book so much, and it's definitely on par with the first. These characters were just so absolutely enjoyable to read about. I do wonder how the author intends to wrap up the entire storyline with just one more prince left... Anyway, would definitely recommend!
Sweet and fluffy with great animal companions. They definitely fell in love unrealistically fast but it was such a beachy read with wonderful world building. It's like cozy and low angst but people do fight to the death and stuff? Very relaxing to read.
I didn’t like it as much as the first, but I still had a good time because, let’s be honest, a dragon improves any plot. I’m keen to see how this series ends
This was incredible, and quite possibly, my favourite Tavia Lark novel to date.
I was absolutely enthralled by this novel from the very first page: "Prince in Disguise" was addictive and wonderful, romantic and heartfelt, and precisely why I love m/m romances so damn much.
Bellamy and Rakos stole my heart: their story was ridiculously fun, sexy and emotional, and it's packed with some of my favourite tropes. Tavia Lark is THE ultimate hurt/comfort queen and the way she writes vulnerable and touch-starved characters is priceless... AND the way she writes their uber-protective, utterly whipped, firmly-wrapped-around-their-fingers, love interests? *chef's kiss* unforgettable.
Bellamy and Rakos are incredibly lovable protagonists. Bellamy is fantastic: he deals with so much stuff on a daily basis, and I loved seeing both his vulnerable and needy side and his fearless and reckless one. He's so fun, so quietly strong, and I loved seeing him gain more and more confidence as the novel progressed. I also loved the way Tavia Lark dealt with his chronic headaches: sometimes, especially in romances of the paranormal variety, the illnesses their protagonists deal with are magically cured by love or through a miraculous recovery. It was refreshing, and honest and realistic, to see Bellamy's chronic illness not treated that way. So kudos to the author for that!
Rakos was an equally fantastic protagonist: he reminded me, in some ways, of a more feral, less duty-bound Arthur (from Tavia Lark's other series, "Radiance"). Rakos is protective and respectful and caring, but he's also rakish and ridiculous and reckless and a bit of an idiot. I completely adored him, and the way he was with Bellamy? Completely devoted to him, cheerfully and shamelessly wrapped around his finger? It was PRICELESS.
The side characters were equally lovable, and I want a Sarka and a Bastard in my life. Also, seeing Julien and Whisper again was fantastic, and I'm now even more curious to read Audric's story: I'm so intrigued by him, and I honestly don't know what I should expect from him.
The plot was intricate and addictive and well-done and the writing was utterly magical: Tavia Lark, you're officially one of my favourite authors. I'm so damn excited to dive into more of her backlist, and I'd definitely sell my soul to have the next book in my hands. I'm also very, very intrigued by a certain snake-ish prince, and a few other notable side characters, so I hope there will be many more stories in this series!
Another solid book by Tavia! While this one didn't quite reach the levels of the first in the series, Prince and Assassin, there was still a lot to enjoy. To start, the broadening of the magic systems in this universe was well done. Because dragons> Dragons you can talk to. Also a teleporting ferret who can also talk to the dragons. I wonder what magic animal the third book will bring!
Anyway, back to this book, the adventuring road trip was a nice plot set up and you get to see Bellamy come into his own. Also both main characters are terrible at disguises. One part I wish was more developed was the part where Rakos (the dragon rider MC) decides he needs to go back to Bellamy and their eventual falling in love. The romance was probably the weakest part of the book for me but even so, it was still mostly well done.
Can't wait to read the third brother's book!
I received an ARC copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.
Aaa this was such a great follow up!! Okay so when book 1 ended I was sure book 2 would be about audric (BOOK 3 HERE I COME). When i learned it was about their baby brother Bellamy i was a little bit disappointed but that didnt last at all.
This book has hidden identities x2 and its honestly great, not much of a heavy plot going on. Everything feels very lowstakes (even when it isnt) but thats what makes it so great!
Bellamy and Rakos have great chemistry, I really enjoyed the development of their relationship and they had plenty of banter between them + comedic moments. I did like this a lot better than book 1 surprisingly. Still, the usage of modern speech is there and although i try not to get bothered by it, it does take me out of the story sometimes.
I listened to this on audible and the narrators did a fantastic job for this one as well!!
A fun sequel. I liked the dynamic between Bellamy and Rakos, but really wished we'd had more of Sarka and dragon-riding. I do love that so far each main couple in the books had companion animals! Would also have preferred the ending of them meeting Bell's family to be longer.
This one disappointed me a lot. The plot was all over the place and I had the feeling that it was moving too slow, maybe cause I found it boring. I'm not a fan of the secret identity trope but I hoped that since I love how this author writes I would at least like it a little. The romance.....this is when the book lost me. There was no chemistry between Bellamy and Rakos and the moments that they did have I found them funny instead of cute. I didn't believe that they were in love. Bellamy was annoying and by the end of the book I couldn't stand him and Rakos become the slave of Bellamy once they started to catch "feelings". It felt like he had no personality other than to please and protect Bellamy(he could have been so interesting since he was a dragonrider). This book felt so childish compared to book one. I found the plot of this book so ridiculous that by the end of the book I was so done with it. When I found out why this all started I laughed out loud because it was so idiotic. Correct me if I'm wrong but Bellamy never said out loud to Rakos that he loved him....Rakos did say it but Bellamy always changed the subject or initiated sex. It felt like Rakos loved Bellamy more. The only thing that I liked were the dragons but they appeared so little that it did not make a big difference .
Okay, it's official: I adore this series. In this installment, the reader gets to know Bellamy, the youngest of the Sandry brothers, who is stranded in the neighbouring country of Draskora by a shipwreck. Passing himself off as a minstrel, he sets out on a cross country journey back home at the side of the supposed farmer he found himself in a cell with. Little does he know that his entirely too appealing travelling companion is none other than famed dragon rider Rakos Tem. Of course, action, magical shenanigans, romance and sexy times ensue. So glad I discovered these books! Thoroughly enjoyed the first one, the sequel very much lived up to its predecessor, and book three sounds just as promising.
This was amazing. Probably my favorite book Tavia Lark has written so far (though I haven’t gotten to that Vampire Delivery service series yet and I am mightily intrigued).
Bellamy and Rakos are great characters. Bellamy is adorable and charming, and Rakos is so sweet and considerate even when he and Bell are almost total strangers to each other. Both of them are kind of dolts, but in ways I found really amusing.
The plot worked a little bit better for me in this one than in book 1, just by way of getting to see more of the world as Bell and Rakos travel through Draskora, and learning more about the world building - scalestone and dragons and whatnot.
All in all, this was a really fun, fantasy read and I had a great time with it. Super looking forward to book 3 - I just really love characters who pine for people they’re not supposed to want. (Which, actually, that’s kind of been the case in books 1 and 2 as well, lol.)
Thanks to Tavia Lark for a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I raced through this book. It was captivating from start to finish! Adventure, romance, humor, intrigue… all the things I love. I think one of my favorite things is that there was no big drama after the MCs inevitably found out the other’s true identity. Phew!
I highly recommend this series and can’t wait for the next!
The first one was... More. It had more chemistry between the characters and more depth plot wise, but these stories are written with a lot of world building and an excellent intertwined trope, so this was good, just not as good to me as the first one.
Still, I enjoy how the series is going, how the characters are evolving, and I can't wait to read about the last brother. 💖
This series just keeps getting better and better! Prince Bellamy is traveling incognito by sea when his ship docks to await the passing of a mysterious storm. Bellamy gets separated from his oathguards and is captured by enemy soldiers. He's locked in a cell where he frees Rakos, a famed dragonrider. Neither admits their true identity, but they escape together and embark on a journey to get where each of them needs to go. What will happen when their attraction blossoms and they expect that they will soon part ways? This book has mystery, magic, intrigue, danger, dragons, and a deep love. I look forward to Book 3 in the series.
Tavia’s writing is so captivating and fun. This series is starting to be a guilty pleasure and I can’t get enough of these characters and their beautiful pets!💜
I was looking for a fun & easy mm romantasy listen and this definitely was that. Loved the characters & how cute they were with eachother. Wish the dragon was featured more .
The beginning & end were stronger and the middle lagged a bit but nothing to cry about. I enjoyed this more than book 1
