How is it that the bounty hunter Fox can own and wield sacred Cardanthium swords, when she is not a Guardian of Elmnas nor a follower of their ways?
This question, posed near the end of Mouse (book one), is answered in spectacular fashion throughout the course of this second book of The Elmnas Chronicles. The present-day framing story involving Fox and favorite character Blade is intense on its own, but then we get the absorbing backstory of Fox herself.
There are tremendous payoffs along the way in how her life story ties into the present-day plight of various Coalition-conquered realms. There are also many hints and revelations which tie into the story of teenaged possibly-a-divine-seer Mouse.
We follow Mouse in the present day as she journeys to carry out the last (and extremely important, possibly world-saving) wishes of her old friend Red, while meeting new allies to share in her quest.
All of this intertwines beautifully in settings that harken to sci-fi but also high fantasy. There are themes of political intrigue, technological power, compassion and spirituality, betrayal, trust, grief, revenge, transformation, ancient myths, hard truths, divine guidance, and more.
And let's not forget the evil lab-coat-wearing doctors who are possibly involved in genetic manipulation. There is a heart-stopping reveal at the end of this book that made me want to immediately pick up the next book, Lion!
