The emotional, heart-pounding penultimate instalment of Faythe and co’s story in An Heir Comes to Rise series by Chloe C. Peñaranda.Full synopsis and cover reveal coming soon.
First and foremost, I must say I initially loved this series. The writing started off so well, but the last three books weren’t it. I’ll get too far off topic so let’s stick with Book 6:
This entire novel feels like a knock off of both ACOTAR and TOG. And I’m not just talking about the fact that they’re fae. I read extensively and know you can have good fae books that don’t feel like knock offs of SJM.
It’s almost like she used ChatGPT and AI to edit her novel. “It was all borrowed time, wasn’t it?” Hello Aelin in Empire of Storms. The dark fae? The witches. The curse of the still hearts? Again, the witches.
There was too much unnecessary subplotting. This book went on much too long. The ending was beyond anti-climatic. Oh and to set up another series in that universe with the way it ended? Just no.
Don’t even get me started on Nyte and the world crossing. I just…I’m so disappointed.
2.5/5 That was a toughie. Author did a poor job of reintroducing characters. I didn’t remember many which then let me to not care about them. There felt like pointless deaths and character arcs. She would only focus 🌶️ scenes with the FMC and MMC. Everyone else was fade to black. She kept referring to her other series as well which didn’t care for.
4.5 ⭐️ what a great end to a wonderful series! The author built such an intricate world that’s so easy to get lost in. I’ll start by saying that I wish there had been a recap of the previous books at the beginning since it’s been 2+ years since the last book came out. I read it in June of 2023, so it took a while to gather my bearings and remember things (but that’s also a skill issue on my part). This book had a lot of povs, which could get a little confusing at times. I think this would’ve been 5 stars had I remembered the earlier books better. I feel like I can’t say much about the plot itself without spoiling all the build up to this finale. But I will say that this is a long, emotional, stressful, complex journey. I was so invested in all of the characters’ stories—one thing I love about this series is that all the “side characters” really have their own fleshed out personalities and stories. There were so many moving parts in this book that made it such an epic journey. I do think the book could’ve been a bit shorter and gone through another round of edits because I noticed a lot of typos. Overall, this is a great series that I would definitely recommend to anyone who loves fantasy! I do like that the author left some things open ended about certain characters because I would absolutely read books about them.
this is my ARC review what a fantastic ending to a great series! absolutely have tissues nearby as I cried several times throughout the book. the author did leave a loose end for her to possibly pick up at a later time, and I will absolutely be picking that up when/if she ever decides to write it.
Thank you to the author for the eARC opportunity. This review is voluntary & honest.
Man, I know I am LATE with this review, but I really wanted to have the best experience when reading the conclusion of this series, which is one of my very favorites, so I decided to do a full re-read of the “An Heir Comes to Rise” series and the “Nytefall” trilogy. And let me tell you, I am so glad I made this decision. It made it an even better experience to have everything that happened fresh in my head and it made me even more emotionally attached to all story lines coming to a conclusion. The stakes in this book were higher than ever and it was clear that the odds were stacked against our beloved characters. But this book was everything I wanted, needed and much, much more. It did not disappoint & I felt wholly satisfied by the end, but it was also bittersweet because it hurt to say goodbye to characters I’ve loved for years now.
Let’s start off with lovely Faythe because BOY DID SHE GO THROUGH IT THIS BOOK. There were multiple parts in this book that had me thinking, “Chloe, who hurt you? Why are you hurting my baby Faythe this way?” But I am extremely proud of her, her journey & of the leader she became by the end of this book. She has come far from the human girl who felt like a part of her was missing for most of her life. The Faythe in this book was ready to risk it all, ready to make sacrifice herself once again for the chance of a better world for others. Time & time again, Faythe has shown how selfless she truly is & why she is so deserving of a happily ever after the was long overdue. The love & loyalty she has shown towards her found family is never-ending & it was great to see that love, loyalty & never-ending willingness to fight for each other be returned by her loved ones.
Reylan in this book had me wanting to fight the world on his behalf because anything that happens to Reylan is a personal attack against me. He has shown time & time again why he is the perfect book husband. There are so many admirable traits about this man, from his resilience to his never-ending need to fight for those he loves. The deep well of love he has to give & the dedication to his family. But most of all, I love how dedicated he is to Faythe, the love of his life. His willingness to be the villain for her, if that’s what it takes to make sure she comes out on the other side, victorious, alive. I have so much love for his character & I have loved to see his development from the first time we were introduced to him & now. I adore him.
Jakon & Marlowe in this book deepened the love I already had for them & increased it tenfold. There is something so magical about characters who, at first sight, seem to have the least amount of strength & what some would consider “value”, but end up being the most pivotal characters of the series as a whole. These two characters are extremely special & I have so much love for them.
Nik & Tauria, these two characters are such a magical duo. From the very beginning, you could see how meant to be these two were. And through all speed bumps & complexities thrown their way, their love and dedication for one another defied all odds. The leaders they grew to be, together as one, are ones I’m so proud of. Their role in this war was an incredibly important one, and everything they sacrificed for the better world they all believed in showed how dedicated they were to see it come to fruition. These two are two other characters I will forever hold in my heart.
Nerida & Tarly, a couple I never saw coming, never knew I needed, but ended up absolutely adoring. Another couple that just WORKED & were meant to be. They brought out the best parts of one another, & it was so great to see Tarly, a character who was so closed off & showed the least amount of emotion outwardly, free fall into love & show it freely. Nerida, a character who ran away from her past & who she was born to be, stepping into the role she was born into proudly, happily, of her own volition. These two just worked & I adore them.
Kyleer & Zaiana, these two had me a feral mess during every single one of their scenes. Going back & forth between screaming & barking & kicking my feet in the air while giggling. There is something special about two characters that start off being on opposite sides, clearly being each other’s enemies, but end up being intrigued with one another & end up having something blossom between the two. Every single moment between these two was delicious. Filled with pining & the angsty moments. Their story is clearly not over & I am excited to see what’s to come. But so far, I am extremely happy with their development thus far.
Izaiah & Tynan, two other characters I ended up adoring. Izaiah is a complex character who seems to easy going & care free on the outside, but ends up being the complete opposite on the inside. There is so much about him & his intentions that is shaped by the heartbreaks of his past. Things he keeps hidden from even those closest to him. Tynan, a man born to be a heartless, ruthless soldier, who grew to be much more. He grew to understand what love is & how it feels. These two were a duo I did not see coming either, but I ended up becoming obsessed with. Another pair that just WORKS.
Maverick, a character who is so complex & who you never end up understanding fully, but that is more than okay. Maverick was an intriguing character from the very beginning, one whose intentions you never truly understood. And yet, there are some things that were more than clear. His care for Zaiana, his deep hurt over the past life he was robbed of & the fact that he will do what needs to be done, with no reservations or regrets. He is a complicated character that I truly ended up reading about. And I can admit that he stole a part of my heart, even after all of the emotional whiplash he put me through.
There are so many other side characters that stood out to me in this series that I could go on and on about. So many plot points that I obsessed over. This book was an emotional roller coaster for me & I truly enjoyed the whole ride. The amount of times I cried throughout this book is unreal, but Chloe did something absolutely special with this book & series. I 100% recommend it & hope you love and enjoy it like I did. 💜🐦🔥

The plot, the pacing , the world building, the romance, the heros and the villains, everything was FLAWLESS!
All these characters have burrowed deep in my heart and have become my family and loosing them in the book felt like loosing them in read world (I ended up crying in an airplane with people looking at me all weird 🥲)
I started "An Heir comes to rise" 4 years back when I was falling in love with Fantasy Romance, and this series made me fall for romantasy even harder! These books will always have a special place in my heart and I can't wait to Re-read them again
Thank you so so sooo much @chloecpenaranda for this beauutiful eARC , it meant the world to me 🧡💜
3.75☆ an epic way to end the series. despite the author struggling to reintroduce the characters in the final installment, the plot dragging at some points, the book being too long for my liking, and the execution not being met at times, I did enjoy the series. I still stand by this being the great value version of tog.
This book and this whole series was a mess. They way it blatantly copies Acotar and Tog is beyond ridiculous. Honestly I don’t even know why I finished it, had to see it through I guess?
Thank you so much to the author for the opportunity to read this early!
It's the end! I'm so glad I did a re-read of this series before the grand finale because I was able to remember how we got here and what the characters went through. We really went through hell with these characters and they've grown so much! I'm gonna miss this found family so much :(
I acknowledge that this book took a long time and I am grateful to the author for all the hard work she put into it. However, there were so many POVs, and considering that this book is the finale, the stories got diluted the further we got into the book.
I felt like there was too much telling and not enough showing. Characters were constantly jumping from one kingdom to another and I feel like some important scenes were getting lost, because we were rushing towards the ending. I know that some things probably had to get cut in order for the story to progress faster, but the I couldn't take their goals seriously when they magically appeared at another place without a single chapter or just a couple sentences summarizing their journey (eg. Nerida and Tarly more than once, Nik and Tauria, Faythe and Reylan). Also why did we skip the ball scene???? We didn't get a single glimpse into it, we just jumped straight into the battle. Again, this is probably one of those things that had to be cut, but it really affected the pacing.
Sometimes there was too much going on with couple characters and their storylines became a bit absurd (eg. Izaiah, Kyleer). I felt like Kyleer's storyline was good, but it needed a bit more of his POV to really flesh it out. I was interested in Izaiah's motivation in the beginning, considering how the previous book ended, but as we got towards the middle, he faded into the background again and surfaced with (IMO) an absurd storyline that seemed a little too fairytale-like, and very convenient for the ending. Also, how is everyone and their mother a phoenix rider??? Similar to Izaiah, Tarly also had some convenient moments, which I feel like should've been explored more. But maybe the author had different plans for him. Zaiana had a lot on her plate, and even more now, but some of her conflicts felt fabricated just for the sake of drama. So many things were happening that it was hard to take some things seriously. I won't go into details because of spoilers.
As for our villains, I honestly got lost in understanding their motivation and alliances. Marvellas' backstory could've been fleshed out and explained more, especially when we got some crumbs in the first chapter. She did have a moment where she spoke about her past, but it was a bit info-dumpy. Maverick's backstory was interesting, but again, I would've appreciated more of his POV, so we could really see how he feels and what he thinks. His journey was expected, but I'm happy the author left some hints for the future. I would've loved to find out more about his past too, because the author mentioned some interesting things, but again, we'll see in the future. :) Without getting into spoilers, the deaths at the hands of Malin were a bit too rushed and (for me) lacked the emotional impact they should've had. I was expecting to get emotional, but I was confused at what was happening, because I didn't see how we got to that point.
I loved the ties to Chloe's other work, but I also felt weird about it at times. Again, maybe because it seemed a bit convenient at times. But it will be interesting to see how this plays out in her other books.
In conclusion, I love this series and I thoroughly enjoyed the time I spent with these characters. I'm excited to see what the future brings us!
Where do I start with the heir comes to rise series by Chloe C. Peñaranda, I found it when it was new and I fell in love with the world, I had the honour of being given a copy of the final book to review and oh my god I was not disappointed by this and it was well worth the wait to have the conclusion that was perfection.
There was time when I cried so hard and there was moments when I put the book down and didn’t know if I was going to like how it goes but as always you have to trust Chloe and the pain that happens because there was a reason.
I will say the end of chapter 32 had me screaming and kicking my feet when you get there you will know what I mean and how this is something that has been heading to this moment and ahhhhh.
This book was everything I wanted and more passion, lost, pain and all roads have lead to this moment. And I cannot wait until it is out in the world so I can cry with others about this. Chloe will always be an autobuy author and I cannot wait until I have this physically to complete the collection and staring to read all over again and see what I can now pick up more.
I can’t reveal too much now because this is now the last book in the series and I don’t want to give too much but please read this book this series because it’s stunning and everything I needed.
My heart is so full and I sat there bawling when I got to the end. I loved
A Flame of the Phoenix was worth the wait. This final instalment in An Heir Comes to Rise series is emotional and epic. At this point there are a lot of viewpoints and plot elements to cover and I feel this was done well. If I had time a reread would have been better for me or a recap at the start as this series is definitely best binged. The world is massive and the characters all have their own journeys within it. I loved the connection to another series by the author but won’t say too much. This book is long, it didn’t feel too long reading it but I do think it could be edited down a bit. Overall a complex, emotional and satisfying conclusion to a great series. Thank you to the author for an ARC. This is a voluntary review of my own thoughts.
This is my first ARC review, so hopefully I do this right! I love this series with all my heart. If I remember correctly, I got An Heir Comes to Rise during a Stuff Your Kindle Day two years ago. I only picked it up mid last year. Since then, I fell in love with the world this series has created. I think about it often and wish I was in this world.
My review doesn't have spoilers, but my god, going in, I didn't want it to end. I still don't want to believe that this is the last book. It's been a wild, yet beautiful ride. The tears that were shed doesn't compare to how full AFotP made me. Every character has my heart and soul, even the bad ones. One of my favorite things about this series was how lost I could get in it. Time passed by too fast, almost too fast, as I read each of these books.
If you haven't already, read all of the previous books. Then read this one. I guarantee you'll fall in love with it just as I have.
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC copy of this book! What a whirlwind of an end to a great series! By far the longest book in the series but every loose end is tied up and accounted for! Really enjoyed this read and highly recommend this series for anyone looking for their next Fae/Fantasy/Found family fix. This series has a touch of everything and is well worth the read!
felt like one big copycat of everything i’ve ever read/watched. lines from star wars, twilight, kingdom of ash. i was honeslty disappointed as this was a majorly anticipated release.
This series was literally one of the first ones that I became invested in when I restarted my reading journey as an adult. It was through this series too that I became more active as a bookstagram girlie and met all my precious friends. Thus this series started it all for me in a literal sense and is so special to me. The characters, story, romances and world embraced me in a time when I needed it most, so to see it coming to an end is honestly a little bittersweet. I don't want it to end, but also seeing these characters who endured so much get their HEA is so heartwarming.
Let's start off with Faythe. CHLOEEE WTF. You have made this poor girl endure so much pain and loss to the point of me literally screaming "someone make it stop". I don't think I have read a book character who was thrown down so much as Faith was in this series in quite some time. Though there was sooo much pain for Faythe, she kept getting up and fighting even when she would rather have just ceased to even exist. I am so freaking proud of how far she has come despite everything being thrown into her path to make her fail. Her mental health journey, insecurities, and crash outs were not only super valid, but real as hell. I simply have no notes when it comes to her character arc and I am so happy with the way this beautifully complex character got her final bit of happiness.
Reylan oh my gosh one of my OG book HUSBANDS and true loves. There was nothing he wasn't willing to do for Faythe, her well being and her claim on the throne. Faythe only gave him so much stress because of her self-sacrificing tendencies, but he loves her with such an intensity that makes me want to tear up. Reylan also suffered in the form of physical and mental torture here, but every bit of pain inflicted on Faythe was something that wounded him too. I loved seeing him fight for their love and chance at happiness, no matter what stain on his soul it would cause. He may be the loyal general of Rhyenelle, but nothing mattered to him more than Faythe and he would be the villain for her without a second thought. These two together are absolutely everything to me.
Jakon and Marlowe are some of the silent heroes in this story and they deserve so much more credit than they may be given. They were such loyal friends to Faythe every step of the way, even if they couldn't outwardly show it.
Nik and Tauria have come such a LONG way from book 1 till now. They are such badass, empathetic and wonderful leaders of their respective kingdoms. They could not be any more perfect for each other and though they took quite a bit of detours to find each other, they never truly strayed from their devotion to one another. They are such a good balance to one another and seeing them step into their power after so many events was quite the journey. They also hold my heart.
Nerida and Tarly were a couple that was recently established in the prior book, but they understand each other on such a soft and fundamental level. They were two lonely people who found warmth in one another. They both have this kind of softness and underrated power that played such a crucial role in the final conflict. I was scared for a minute when it came to their journey, but Chloe gave me this beautiful reprieve at least.
Kyleer, the second love of my life in this story deserves the whole world and I will always be his defender. His relationship and dynamic with Zaiana was deliciously angsty. They were on opposite sides of a struggle and yet could not help but feel this pull between them. Kyleer sees Zaiana’s monsters and inner struggles yet doesn't turn from her. He never fails to reach out his hand to prickly and vicious Zaiana who has been raised to believe that she is a monster not worthy of kindness. Their story is not yet done even with the conclusion of this series and I cannot wait to see what Chloe is cooking for these two. I will be sat immediately.
Izaiah & Tynan were an unexpected couple to me, but they just make so much sense. I am so happy to see both of them find a support system in each other. Their banter and interactions made me have such a deep appreciation for them not only as a couple but as individual side characters. Two hot flirtatious kings who can slay enemies together and then exhaust themselves in other ways. I think I see them as a brat and brat tamer lol and I could not adore both of these males anymore than I do.
Lastly, I cannot end this review without discussing a character that brought out the most mixed feelings in me across the series. Maverick was first introduced in book 3 and we see that although he has a cold, menacing, and cocky exterior, he showed that he cared for Zaiana and Zaiana alone. At first I will admit that their interactions were exciting, but ultimately they were not compatible for a number of reasons. Maverick commits some acts that I thought would keep him as irredeemable to me, but I was yet again pleasantly surprised by Chloe. The acts remain unforgivable, but my perspective on his character has shifted and grown. Like all of the characters in this book, he exists in this shade of grey and complexity. I truly applaud what Chloe did with his character because it left me thinking and I absolutely love it when a book does that.
There was so much more that I could honestly go days talking about, but I will choose to leave things here so as to not spoil too much. I truly try to convince others to read this series as much as possible because it is just a beautiful journey. Chloe may have finished this story, but she left so many freaking exciting crumbs that are yet to be followed and I am of course willing to go along for the ride. It may feel like goodbye, but I like to think of it as more of a "see you later". ACTHR forever.
A Flame of the Phoenix An Heir Comes to Rise 6 di @chloecpenaranda che ringrazio per la collaborazione 💜"Let's give everything we have to this world. One last time"
⚔️"The next few nights are Ungardia's darkest hours. It all ends now" Una dinamica è decisamente arrivata, ha colpito, ed è stata gestita in modo non convenzionale.
🇬🇧 And we arrived the last volume of the saga, the conclusion of this epic story. It's definitely a worthy ending, although unfortunately it didn't totally win me over. Multi-POV throughout the book allows the reader to follow all the characters when they are not together, giving even more of a sense of epicness. Unfortunately, the beginning part was slower, partly because they have to restart all the characters' stories. The characters are initially separated and have to (re)start their journey. Characters and POVs already seen in the previous volumes return, meet and separate several times. The story stagnates slightly before the middle and then improves considerably in the second half. The plot is definitely structured and intricate, if some things were more predictable others really managed to surprise me. ⚔️"The next few nights are Ungardia's darkest hours. It all ends now" A dynamic definitely arrived, struck, and was handled in an unconventional way. Plus after 3 books waiting for a scene it finally happened! Aka the romance side brings joys. I really enjoyed the constant theme of the thin line between good and evil, good and bad. I appreciated the importance of choices and seeing the relationships between the characters evolve. My favourite character is definitely the main character Feythe, I love her strength, her good heart, her power and her doubts. Another character I loved, a little more with each book, is Zaiana, a grey character struggling with moral conflict. 🔥"Follow your heart and trust you can rise from the ashes you will burn" Unfortunately I didn't appreciate a narrative choice and linking the author's two romance sagas, I didn't see the need but it definitely surprised me. This book goes through ups and downs, with parts that thrilled me and others that went more slowly but overall it is a long volume and my favourite of the series is the third ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
We finally have our conclusion to the An Heir Comes to Rise series, and the story of Faythe and co came to an end. I feel very conflicted on this review to say the least.
For me this series has had its ups and downs to say the least. I didn't like the first two all that much, I loved the third one, hated the fourth one and was obsessed with the fifth one. With the sixth and final installment in this series I was very curious to see where we would end up and if it would be great or... if not.
I feel like A Flame of the Phoenix is structurally, all over the place. We have lots of multiple POV's, and sometimes it felt too much. I found it difficult to follow all of the different storylines, with the characters being all over the map, more seperated than not, made it pretty hard. At one point we have a whole section of Faythe and Zaiana's POV's and then we jump to Nikallias to see where he's at and it's been over a 100 pages since we last saw him? At one point we see Samara and Livia back, and I completely forgot they existed and had something to do on the other side of the world.
I also felt like all the relationships were starting to resemble each other. Faythe and Reylan, along with Marlowe and Jakon, were the original characters, then you had Tauria and Nik, Tarly and Nerida, Zaiana and Kyleer/Maverick (it's still unclear to me who she felt most strongly about; it felt more like a love triangle), and finally, Izaiah also found his match with the dark fae Tynan. They were all mates, and I thought their dialogue was similar, with the constant amount of lovebombing. Even some statements like, "If I lost him/her, I don't know who I would become in my grief," were repeated by different characters.
Zaiana was honestly the best part of the book. Her character development, her journey to find herself, who she is and who she should be, was so beautiful to read about. Such a strong character. She truly carried the book on her back, and I wish we could get a spinoff about her.
Faythe was somewhat overshadowed by Zaiana. I felt Zaiana's story was much more interesting. Faythe had much less character development. She's accepted that she's the Phoenix Queen and is going to fight for her kingdom, but I felt like she still had to rely so heavily on her friends to constantly encourage her and reaffirm her strength. Faythe goes through a lot in the first part of the book—a lot of pain, loss, and grief. She repeatedly threatens to destroy everything and everyone, but of course, never does. Lots of big words, and yet she continues to forgive everyone. I felt Faythe seemed more like a doormat than a genuinely good person. She should've had her vengeance instead of constantly letting everyone get away with hurting and killing her family/friends. It's actually insane.
The stupid choices the characters made sometimes gave me a genuine headache. Trusting people they barely knew, only to be surprised when they betrayed them, was incredibly irritating. Constantly leaving, searching for magical objects, only to never find them, was incredibly irritating.
I actually found the book too long-winded. It would have been better if it had been split into two parts. Because it moved so slowly, I lost my attachment to the characters. And I found that such a shame to end the series on such a bad note.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I didn’t start this with high hopes. And why would I? It’s book six of a series where every prior instalment barely scraped two stars. But I always try to finish what I start, and this was no exception.
Reylan’s storyline is the only thing that felt worth holding onto. His torture, his unraveling, the brutal stripping of his memories of Faythe..it was heartbreaking. Genuinely hard to read at times. Just as I was recovering from that emotional hit, the book whips out yet another POV from someone I couldn’t care less about. And it keeps doing it. Again and again. Why? Pick a lane and stay in it.
Reylan being turned into a villain hurt. Watching him harm Faythe and kidnap her under manipulation, knowing he’d be devastated when he came back to himself, was agonising. But that didn’t stop Kyleer, apparently Faythe’s loyal friend and protector, from deciding that her mid battle disappearance was a good time to go for a walk and flirt with Zaiana. People are dying, Faythe’s just exploded trying to save Reylan, and you’re out here sightseeing?
And once again, more POVs. Every time the plot builds momentum, it shatters under the weight of yet another unnecessary voice. By the time I’d found my footing with one character, the book had already moved on. It kills the tension and makes it hard to care.
The romantic scenes were raw in the worst and best ways. Faythe still reaching out to Reylan, him calling her his queen one second and wrapping his hand around her throat the next. Then we finally get a breakthrough, and somehow it turns into a rushed wedding proposal reversal? Of course it does. Nothing about this story follows logic, so why should romance?
Then came the deaths. Marlowe. Jakon. Both devastating. But for some reason, those characters acts like Faythe personally failed them. Never mind that she was a literal prisoner of war and being tortured clearly she should have also been omnipresent. The logic is flawed, the guilt piled onto her is ridiculous, and I’m tired of watching her get blamed for everyone’s failures.
And Kyleer. His death hurt..but he came back. Not quite the same, dark fae now, his memory gone. It’s meant to be bittersweet, but it mostly felt like the story undoing one of the only gut punch moments it had managed to land. The stakes never stay real for long in this series.
The big finale? They leave Reylan behind. Again. To go to a grave. Again. And he gets captured. Again. I have lost count of how many times this plot has reset itself like a broken video game.
Still, there are moments. Real, good moments. Faythe going full battle mode in the courtyard. Reylan breaking through. The final emotional speeches. Jakon’s sacrifice. There is a beating heart in this story, buried under the mess. It just takes a long time to find it.
This was still chaotic, often nonsensical, emotionally heavy handed, and structurally all over the place, but it was better than the others. Which isn’t saying much. But three stars, because somewhere inside all the clutter, there was finally something worth feeling.

First of all, I want to say thank you to Chloé C. Peñaranda — not just for her incredible book (although I’m thankful for that too!), but for inspiring me to create my Bookstagram account. It was through discovering her books that I decided to take the leap, and now it’s been three years that I’ve been here, still as in love with books as ever!
This final installment picks up right where the fifth book left off, and I was so eager to dive in and finally know how it all ends. I wasn’t disappointed for a single second — even though I felt sadness, anger, and joy all at once throughout the journey! I started my first read around 4 PM and had to stop at 56% after three intense hours (unfortunately, I had to eat and sleep 😅). The moment I woke up the next morning, I jumped right back in — I couldn’t even wait until after work. I devoured all 960 pages in just seven hours!
It was such a joy to reunite with all the characters — but especially Zaiana, who has been my favorite since the very beginning. She’s such a complex and compelling character that, despite her flaws and the darker parts of her, I can’t help but admire her. Deep down, she always puts others before herself, and even now, she continues to do just that. Her relationship with Kyleer is beautiful, full of emotion and fierce protectiveness. And her intense connection with Maverick is equally breathtaking!
And oh — what a joy it was to see Nik and Tauria again, two characters I’ve loved from the start as well! They’ve been through so much together, and their connection is incredibly strong. I’ve adored watching them grow and evolve side by side. Their moments together felt powerful and heartfelt, and I cherished every one of them.
Faythe and Reylan aren't my favourite characters, but in a way, I like them! They're always there for each other! They're a powerful couple!
As the story unfolds, we start to see who the real villain is, and understand the reasons behind everything. The relationships between all the characters deepen, and unexpected bonds are revealed that truly surprised me.
Even during the intense battles involving multiple characters, Chloé C. Peñaranda’s writing made me feel like I was right there with them. The tension, the action, the raw emotions — it was so vivid and gripping that I couldn’t look away.
And the ending… wow. Just as impactful and unforgettable as the rest of the series. It doesn't let you down — it hits hard, wraps things up beautifully, and still leaves you thinking. It was the perfect conclusion to a stunning journey.
Thank you again, Chloé C. Peñaranda, for crafting such a magical world and characters that I’ll carry with me for a long time. I can’t wait to see what you create next!
I know I won't remember all the things I wanted to say in my review nor do I find the correct words to. I have conflicting emotions and am still trying to make sense of everything that happened - and didn't happen.
This series as a whole is a diamond. I LOVED the first three books so much I didn't give a lick they bore so many similarities with Sarah J. Maas's TOG -series. I loved Chloe's style of writing and creating characters and worlds completely of her own while drawing inspiration from a story that was clearly very meaningful to her. She was an indie author for so long and I truly think she deserves the fame and regognition she is slowly starting to get.
But. Then comes the stupid but I did not want to acknowledge.
I am not a fan of the last two books. It breaks my heart to say this, but I'm just.. not. I was very disappointed with the last one and while this final book was slightly better I found it lacking in too many ways to write a fully positive review.
First and foremost: the editing of this book was horrible. I think the fifth book had the same problem - such a big book without much happening at all until too close to the ending and then it all happened too fast and in way too unbelievable, even a bit childish and naive, ways. Also the predictability of how things would go took off some of the shine for me.
And I can live with a character coming back from the dead in a fantasy book once, but twice? Or thrice? Yeah, no. That's when it all starts to feel too much like a children's fairytale and not an epic romantasy book.
Speaking of romantasy - WHERE was the spice ?! I know from A star is born and Night is Defying that Chloe can whip up some damn dreamy spicy scenes, so where were they?! I kept wishing for one (or more) for Zaiana and Kyleer at least. I hope their story continues in search for Mordecai and we'll get those scenes, because I feel depraved!
And all Faythe's friends either dying or becoming kings and queens of their own right? Also just too much. At times I felt like I was reading a story for children and that is a feeling I do not want while reading a supposed dark adult fantasy.
However, because this series is damn dear to me, I also couldn't drop the stars too low. It's 3,5-3,75 for me. I did wish for a different kind of conclusion and more epicness and smuttiness and less naivety and fairytale vibes. But I also devoured the book and it made me want to do a re-read of the entire series to get a fresh, whole picture of everything.
So that's what I'm gonna do while waiting for the next adventure from Chloe C. Peñaranda, who still is one of my favourite authors of all time.
I honestly don’t know what to say. I am beyond speechless. I haven’t stopped crying.
!SPOILERS AHEAD!
Can we just take about how much of a fyn shyt Reylan is! He is honest, open, supportive, respectful, lets Faythe unleash without controlling her!! *Chef KISSS* Honestly bf goals right there! Faythe and his relationship just could not get any better imo. While we’re on the topic. Idk how Faythe doesn’t have more ptsd, my girl went thRROUGH it. My heart literally aches for her. I love love love you Phoenix Queen!
TARLY!! HELLOOO! He has untouched power he didn’t know he had?! That made me so emotional and happy for him, he wanted so badly to be equal to everyone and make a difference in the war. And him saving Tauria was the icing on the cake! So so happy for him and Nerida being mates. Literally crying. He deserves all the happiness and love. FIIINALLY get to see Tarly and Nerida go AT IT. KNEW THIS MAN WAS A FREEAAAAK!
NOW FOR KYLEEERRR! UUGGHHH I WANT HIM. I JUST… *RRGHHHH BARK BARK*. This MAAANNSSS. THE YEARNING. THE LUSTING. THE HUMOUR. THE GOD LIKE FEATHERED WINGS. THE PROTECTING. THE NEVER GIVING UP. Zi might not deserve you, BUT BABY I DO. In saying this, they BETTER get their own book. ISTG! (Ky also had be cryyiiinn)
I was soooo stanning Nik & Zianna’s found friendship (if you can call it that). I loved that he tried to help her regain her powers and find her heart. Literally tears. And also Zi and Rey’s friendship! Was fkn with that too! Hahaha I loved Zi so much she literally doesn’t stand up for no bs. Also, fuck YOU EDITH. WTTTHHHH. Betraying us like that???Glad u died. Literally did NOT expect that coming! Holy plot twist. And Izaiah baby! Phew! Didn’t trust you there for a sec. Had me very worried. But how about it huh, BLACK FIREBIRD? You win. Literally win. You freaking did it!
SUCH A SLAY HAVING UNIVERSE CROSSOVERS!!! LOVED getting to see Nyte in this! I wonder if we’ll get to see more of Faythe & Reylan in their world? SO SO SO SAD ABOUT ATHERIUS. totally thought about her being a firebird she’d come back? Hopefully her egg will hatch for Faythe & Reylans kids!
Now for the absolutely wild DEVASTING PULL YOUR HEART OUT SHIT EVER. WHAT THE ABSOLUTE HELLLL. NOT JAKON & MARLOW, then AMARA. I’m literally crying writing this. I CAN’T. I just can’t. I was in shambles. CHAPTER 90 HAD ME BAAAWWWLING. Streams of tears that were never ending. And then her seeing them at their headstones?! NAH BYE. SENT ME.
I just can’t explain the feeling towards these characters and this series. Has me in a chokehold and I don’t think I’ll ever be okay.

EN | A final book that felt very mixed. SPOILERS ahead.
What I liked: the character development for some (Zaiana, among others), the romance, the happy ending for our MMC/FMC, and an ending to the story that wasn’t that bad overall.
What I didn’t like: way too many never-ending subplots (daggers and ruins popping up in every corner), way too many couples/mates (and not even the ones that matter!!). Seriously, all the mates are between royals too: Nerida/Tarly, Nik/Tauria, Faythe/Reylan (okay, he's not royal but a general…). The whole Nyte storyline? No, thanks. I even read Nytefall (The Stars Are Dying, book 1) and hated it—so I couldn’t have cared less that he showed up here. Yes, there were some deaths, but honestly, none of them felt impactful given how many characters are crammed into this book… I didn’t feel much at all when they happened.
Not sure if it’s just because I was fed up and started skimming, but the plot resolution dragged so much. 900 pages. 900 PAGES!! By the end, it was all just a blur.
And most importantly!! No happy ending in sight for Zaiana and Kyleer, even if the epilogue hints there might still be hope…
(Oh, and of course I thought about Kingdom of Ash this entire time)
i didnt think anything would make me cry harder than a sword from the embers but chloe said “hold my pen” and so here we are.
thank you to chloe for providing me an arc of this absolute perfection of a book.
this was my most anticipated read of 2025 and it was everything, and i mean everything, i expected and more. agonising, beautiful, hopeful, emotionally damaging. i literally spent most of the day bawling my eyes out. i’m gonna need a lot of therapy to recover and i fear that i’ll never be able to pick up another book for a while. but god, everything about this book was just amazing.
the plot. holy moly, i was obsessed with the plot. after the ending of a sword from the embers, i had so many theories of what would happen and how things would wrap up. it was not what i expected (in a good way), and i’m genuinely not kidding when i say that i don’t think i’ve cried so hard in my life like i literally had to close my kindle to calm myself down.
the characters. god, the characters. they all went through so much that i wish they were real so i could hug them all (and take them for some much needed therapy). faythe and reylan have always been my favourite characters but this book just solidified my love for them even more. nik and tauria truly have a love that i want to experience and tauria is literally the most badass woman ever. zaiana? her character development was INSANE. i went from not really liking her into a throne from the ashes to being OBSESSED with her and her dynamics with all the characters. also the found family, i quite literally couldn’t stop crying. these characters are everything to me. i don’t think i’ll ever forget these characters, no matter how many books i read.
this series is absolutely one of my god tier series. it’s the series that i’ll always find myself rereading no matter what mood i’m in. this world and the characters has always intrigued me from the minute i opened the first book. it’s so bittersweet that this series is ending but i will forever treasure it and hold it close to my heart because it means so much to me and i connected so much to the characters. if there is one series you all should read, it is absolutely this one.
