I will be honest, tsundere is not fav. I like people to be in to each other as I really like to take people at their word. I think here though he is clear that he cares about her he just doesn't have deep feelings for her yet so they are working to build their relationship. The ending at the festival made me smile. I see you Habanero. The art is pretty cute too. This wasn't my fav at the beginning cause it felt like another girl declaring that she will dedicate her life to a man who isn't putting her first but its pretty clear here that he likes her as a person/friend. He knows how she feels and doesn't dismiss her feelings, just tells her how it makes him feel and she respects that.

I like these two.

I don’t often say this, genuinely, but these two really deserve one another. Kurose is such a dingdong, even if he hides a reasonably good heart, and Mugi won’t let his attitude get in the way of her own affection.

While Kurose being a child of divorce is not anything new, I do like the way that it does make his general attitude make sense. He’s guarded because he’s seen feelings change and then disintegrate first hand.

So when he’s being such a BOY about everything, including his own changing perspective on Mugi, it’s absolutely believable he’s that damn stubborn. When he reveals how much he can’t stand his coworker, Natsume, who likes to play the field? Also believable.

And, yes, when he’s completely tsundere about dating Mugi because he doesn’t want some fly-by-night relationship, that’s entirely plausible too. Just like it’s entirely plausible that he’s not aware of how lonely it’s leaving him.

Which makes Mugi’s role to just be there, chipping away at Kurose’s defences. Even when she gets along with Natsume and has more to talk about with him, it’s Kurose who she wants. Believably so, since Mugi is just so straightforward.

I have always liked this pairing and Mugi’s ‘damn the torpedoes’ approach prevents a lot of miscommunication (though not all). She’s never less than clear with Kurose about her perspective and feelings, even if he’s only partially receptive (if that).

Then again, Mugi’s style leads to her missing a ton of nuance, which is a welcome counterpoint. She thinks Kurose is ignoring her during the trip, which he is, but he’s actually got a good reason.

And that reason doesn’t come out because, again, he’s such a boy about things and she takes a while to realize what’s actually going on. That’s an entirely reasonable outcome given their natures.

Even when a rival for Kurose’s affections potentially arises, Mugi plunges ahead and takes pains to head that all off at the pass. It doesn’t really work out, but not for lack of trying. That’s a good way to recycle old plots.

And there’s still a little progress here and there. Mugi ends the volume being too nice for her own good, but that doesn’t change the situation because Kurose might be many things, but indirect he is not. He quickly defuses a ticking time bomb and gets back to hanging with the girl he definitely doesn’t hate, but also won’t commit to.

This series is really enjoyable, even if it isn’t going anywhere new. The trick is that the path it’s taking there is not quite the standard, more off to the side, standard-adjacent. That’s enough to give it a jolt of life beyond the normal.

3.5 stars - not the best volume, but I do feel that these are characters making the choices that befit their personalities and that makes them more believable and interesting to read about. A solid shojo.

Confession time I am way over the age of the target demographic for this manga but I don’t care. I love it. Yes it’s the popular trope of sunshine and grumpy but Mugj and Kurose do it so well. It was also an interesting twist that Kurose is a child of divorce and it plays a role in how he feels about love. Mugi’s continued kindness makes her such an endearing character for me.

The art is also so cute here. This is a very solid high school shojo, hopefully soon romance, for anyone that is interested. I just hate that Yen Press takes forever between each volume release.

The introduction of this new girl felt very random considering he had a pretty established relationship with her that wasn't really mentioned previously plus the fact that his coworker became more of a character. It felt like an element that wasn't originally planned, but I like what it brought to the story. Also the end of this volume was so cute! Can't wait to see them get closer.

And it got annoying again! I do not like this back and forth! I’d rather see them navigate a relationship than see “the chase”. Miyao is too nice when it comes to Kurose. I hope Natsume stirs up some trouble and lights a fire under Kurose’s ass LOL
