Alpha's Kiss

Rate this book
A kiss can be a magical thing...

Rory is an omega prince, heir to the throne of the magical kingdom of Igella. His country’s laws dictate that omegas must have a Regent to rule in their stead—and that the Regent must be an Alpha. Rory’s wicked stepmother, Queen Berenda, needs to find an unscrupulous Alpha, because she has nefarious plans of her own for her stepson.

But there are flies in the ointment—Rory isn’t fully awakened, and the king’s health is growing worse daily. When gorgeous Alpha, Lord Lexington, arrives with his pack, flashing plenty of gold, Berinda is overjoyed and quickly arranges a marriage between the young Prince and his new Alpha, and that’s when the trouble truly begins. In reality, “Lord” Lexington is a prince in his own country of Morovia, Igella’s most bitter enemy.

Rory and Lex get married, and head back to Morovia, so that Lex can discover the truth about Rory’s infamous family, and his real mother, the “warlock” Vesper. Using his powers as a witch and a warrior, Lex has to try to keep Rory alive long enough to reach Morovia. Along the way, they develop a fierce and burning attraction to each other, but other dark and unknown forces are moving against them, and danger is all around. It will take both of them, along with a little help from magical forces to come out of this alive and find their happily ever after.

This is an omegaverse, with strong, dominant Alphas and some MPREG. Forced marriage, knotting, possessive Alpha, omega heat but no dubcon, and no multiple partners.

Oof, that was BAD. I'm sorry, but I'm just glad it's over.

I literally don't even know where to start. I feel like the concept had a lot of promise but the actual execution was, frankly, terrible. What a waste of a gorgeous cover.

If this was a debut novel, I would maybe give a bit of grace, but it's very clearly not so I'm kind of shocked at how rough the writing was. For one, the entire book was written in past tense. Normally, that's not a huge issue, because I'm aware that that's a personal preference of mine - but if it's done well, I would never count it against the book. This was not done well. It felt (as a friend of mine once put it) like the MC was on their deathbed telling a story of their youth and it made it feel rushed; some scenes especially were just glossed over as if there were holes in their memory. More to that point, there was hardly any actual significant dialogue between the characters. What little dialogue they did have very quickly became clunky and cringey.

Second, the writing overall was just, I'm sorry to say, amateurish. Nearly every sentence felt stunted and harsh like the story was being told by a kid who hasn't yet learned what information is actually interesting or pertinent to a story. Not to mention how repetitive it was - a lot of things were repeated not just in the narrative, but by the actual characters speaking to each other. Like, they would say things to each other as if they hadn't already told them chapters before.

And omg, the plot.

Like I said, the idea for the book was interesting - I wouldn't have picked this up unless I thought so. But, wow, the story didn't just take a nosedive; it crashed and burned - fiery explosion and all.

I'm trying so hard not to be outright mean but I'm really having trouble.

∘₊✧─── POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD!! ───✧₊∘

So without further ado, here's my shit list:

• Let's start with the fact that Rory doesn't show any evidence of using magic until the Alphas take him away from Igella. You're telling me that up until that point, he NEVER had any instances of magic use? I find that very unlikely with how easily his magic was incited by Lex and the others. Not to mention his newborn baby was already using magic in the crib? And Rory didn't know he had magic until he was 19??

• The "I love you" after two days thing? Come on. I like insta-love as much as the next person but when you have next to no dialogue showing any actual emotional connection growing between the MCs? Yikes. I understand that the author tried to use the whole "true mates" thing to hurry it along but even still, it made their relationship seem so shallow. And, ugh, the terms of endearment that came outta nowhere - so cringey.

• Why, why, WHY are we calling the folded up fabric that he uses for his slick "pads"? It's giving Always Maxi Pad with Wings. I am so bothered.

• The "binding" or, the exorcism, as I'd prefer to call it. You're telling me that in order to "bind" a warlock's dark magic, you need to chant in Latin and touch his head? When did this become an episode of Supernatural?

• From like 70% on, information is just dropped. No finesse, no dialogue, no context - just "Oops, Rory's pregnant", "Oops, now he's dead", "Oh wait, now he's not cause of true love's kiss or whatever". It very quickly stopped being a story; you're just saying things to me and none of them matter.

• Lex is just leaving his entire country? The PRINCE!? Fine, yes, it's for his "true mate" and the Queen done fucked up when she "killed" Rory but it cannot possibly be that easy for him.

• And OH, the pièce de résistance...a healer in Igella (a.k.a. the COUNTRY WHERE PEOPLE DON'T BELIEVE IN MAGIC) just casually gives Rory & Lex an explanation for why Rory's power is the way it is. Because the healer used a "healing blue flame" and because Rory's fire is also blue, it's "protective" magic. Oh, but he doesn't actually tell them this. No, there's no actual dialogue. It's just another of the hundreds of summarized sentences that was just thrown in to explain crucial plot points. You would THINK that someone somewhere (maybe someone with extensive knowledge of magic *cough* Lex *cough*) would have already known this information, no?

• The sex was meh.

I knew this was a Snow White retelling. Not the Disney version or the Brothers Grimm. A lot of the hallmarks. Though!

Prince Rory was only shown love from his mother, Queen Vesper, until the tenth day after his birth. Complications they said! Childbirth is hard in those time nobles and royalty lived in castles.

Sometime later his father married a beta of considerable wealth. The reason isn't stated. But I'll assume it's the Heir and a spare method. While at war with a neighboring kingdom. The line of session can't be broke.
Good thing he had a nanny. Until she got in the way of Queen Berenda's first murder plot.

Years later, during a sease fire. Queen Berenda looks for Rory's regent. Cause she isn't the fairest. Nah just playing! The King will never set his omega heir aside for his new wife's daughter. The countries rules state that only alphas rule. If the heir is an omega. They will marry an alpha whom will be regent until their alpha heir is of age.

Queen Berenda hatches a plan to find that alpha. That would meet those requirements with a few caveats. Ensuring she and her daughter continue to live comfortably at the castle.

Basically getting a "huntsman" to take the prince into the forest. So he can bring the Queen his heart...That's where things go wrong... Rory is to cute and witty for such a fate. When he meets the huntsman, but waot. A whole lot different view from his pack mates. They feared he was to wed a troll of a warlock. They would have to dispatch after the heir was born. Lord Lexington our huntsman. Just can't for now. Taking it one issue at a time.

A lot of players. So many pieces moving in the background. Ya still get that true loves kiss. Along with interesting grammar usage.

No respect

I can understand a society that thinks little of omegas, but the alpha goes above and beyond to mistreat, belittle, humiliate, and abuse the omega prince. The omega just smiles and accepts it all because the alpha is good looking and has a dong. Vomit. Oh, and their religion just labels anyone not a witch is evil and needs to be wiped out. This could have gone better with communication and a bit of empathy, but I can’t read the last 1/4th of what remains. This has extended way too long for any good resolution. There is nothing that alpha could do to put him in good standing after what he’s done.

i actually had a pleasant time reading the book until 50% in.

the women were treated awfully, with the 3 major women in the book being described as stupid and bitchy. would it have been so hard to make one of lex's cousins a woman? switch out king harrison for queen harrison? even the fucking innkeeper or random guards. i find it odd that in an abo world, theres still sexism against women (?) which is the only reason i can think of them being excluded from all these positions of power.

also everybody was sooooo unbelievably beautiful or handsome. you could barely get thru a description of lex without rory extolling about his extremely good-looking features. and get this: the one character who is described as "not very pretty" is the evil religious-fanatic queen who tried to kill rory! lmao like what. i was actually really excited when her character came bc i was looking forward to a twist in this relatively simple book but no such luck :/ i wouldnt mind this being a world that is just filled with beautiful people if the one plain character wasn't a villain.

and everything happens wayy to quickly. the timeline is confusing tbh. rory's heat is built up for half of the book and when it comes, its thrown away in some random paragraph as being a "pleasant haze of days." same with his pregnancy. same with his death. another instance i was almost pleasantly surprised by bc i thought his "death" would have more repercussions. at least losing his baby :/ its the first time im sad that nothing permanently bad has happened to an mc tbh.

the only good part was rory and lex's initial attraction to each other. i liked when they had to battle with their attraction to each other versus the circumstances they were in. they had good chemistry but even their flirting was a little clunky, and lex varied from "i hate this warlock" to "my innocent baby" way to often throughout the book. i dont even mind instalove (at times) but cmon rory, this man threatened you multiple times and thought omegas needed to respect/fear their alphas. like WHAT !!! yes, lex said he didnt actually plan on hurting rory but that doesnt mean its okay to try and make ur lover fear you? its such a confusing action that i'm still puzzled over it.

writing seemed rushed by the end, i found multiple typos and again, the last act glossed over so many big events much too quickly. theres so many problems littered in the book that i could write another book critiquing all of it.

☆ not recommending music this time, but you can listen to greensleeves if you decide to read this book since its mentioned specifically ☆

It was bad.

No "bad funny". I usually enjoy those.

No.

It was "I-Can't-Is-So-Cringey" type of bad.

The plot sounded promising and interesting, I love a well developed omegaverse. But this one, ugh. I'm gonna do a list with things that I hate about this book, because I'm tired and meh:

1) the "pads"
2) the poor development of the magical rules of the world.
3) the lack of personality of the characters, or/and the lack of consistency in the personality.
4) I swear, I already read a lot of omegaverse and the alphas were not as idiots and basically bullies like in this book.
5) the nonexistent development of the relationship
6) the "you need to respect me as your alpha" small d!ck energy thing
7) uhm, I forgot what more. So yeah, meh.

The synopsis promises something that was lost in the execution of the story. One good thing I can mention about the plot is that for some reason it kept me curious enough not to give up reading

While at the beginning of the book they give all the details of everything that happens, at the end everything is told in retrospect. It's as if at first the author wanted to make a long and detailed book, but for the second half she said: "You know what? This is too much work... Fucked!" And just say what happened without really elaborating on it.

DNF'd at 180/233. I just couldn't do it, and I regularly enjoy trash novels. It is rare for me to not finish a book, especially this far into one. I have been reading for about 20 years, I honestly can't remember the last book I never finished.

But it was insufferable. Both characters were equally gross and frustrating. Rory is a self-deprecating "oh teehee" Disney princess "I'm not like other girls" meek omega, with a stereotypical evil stepmother and a library he hides in to read books. Some random dude who's never mentioned again even finds him some new clothes, like some omega Cinderella. The Alpha is annoying surly and possessive, and not in a sexy way, more like in a bad pornhub script way. I adore alpha and omega novels, and any media with it. This was the typical carbon copy of bland toxic alpha and omega cookie-cutter characters.

Alongside that, the writing's just straight-up boring, with several technical issues. There are grammar and spelling errors everywhere, and a few jarring scenes and flashbacks, and large sections of 1 perspective where Rory and Lex developed seemingly off the page, like the 20 or so pages Rory went from planning to run away to telling Lex he literally loved him. I GET that there is some instalove with fated pairs, but as another review aptly put it: the execution is terrible. Multiple pages are dedicated to explaining the same plot points, often within a couple of pages of just doing it (but worded slightly differently), as if they're incredibly difficult for the reader and they must've forgotten this intricate and dynamic plot. (It's cinderella with a murder plot and preggy men. Shakespeare, it is not.)

I suppose the author is just being cautious because they're also using Omegaverse and don't want to overwhelm newbies to the genre with a complicated plot on top of the dynamics, but it was all too fast, too rushed, too childlike and simple in prose like a bad YA novel, and just too unsatisfying when it came to the nitty-gritty. I thought I might still enjoy it if the sex scenes were at least decent, but they were lacking and over so quickly, and suddenly Rory is missing some men he'd met 2 or 3 days ago.

It's a shame because the author has the skills. They CAN write a good book, I can see the groundwork throughout the book, and there are genuinely good moments in it that kept my attention, but their character and world-building are severely lacking. Slow down and show us more about the characters, without making them Anna Steel and Christian Gray copies with less chemistry. And stop interrupting the plot to tell us 101 things we don't need to know or care about that interrupt the flow of the book. In fact, stop having the characters talk to each other, as well. This book could have been much longer if you held off on so much communication and exposition. Keep secrets, keep characters angry and holding grudges. We need that tension to give a shit more about these characters.

Honestly? You could've summed up about 80 pages of this with "Rory struggled to stay awake for the journey, drifting in and out of consciousness. His heat had made him too tired to try to escape. Whenever he came to, he caught glimpses of Wyatt sending heated stares at Rory when he thought Lex wasn't looking, and more than once, Lex pulled Rory towards him possessively during some of the louder arguments that woke him. Until they arrived at an inn." - and it would've been the same bullshit, tbh. My point is that it was an awkward feeling to have every chapter end and start at the same moment. I get that it's supposed to be so you can show all the detail of the couple before they become mates and how strong the pull was, but something felt off with the pacing in that section in particular.

I just found myself not caring because however you went ahead, I disliked the character development and knew I'd be disappointed with the rest.

Yeah, I just really didn't enjoy it. Yikes. Sorry. I'll come back to her other work, and hopefully, it improves, because she has the talent - she just needs to do a little planning to get that pacing sorted because it's currently sitting at Fanfict.net or Wattpad level plot.

What an amazing fantasy read! This is one that I found I couldn't put down and was quite upset when it was over because I want more from this world!! There is no need to give spoilers, just read the blurb, buy or download the book ... and sit back and enjoy the story. Fantasy MM (Mpreg) at its best. I'm hoping that this turns into a series.

West offers us a sweet fairytale of two princes. Omega, Rory, is the heir to his kingdom but he can't rule being omega born. Alpha, Lex, is from the neighboring kingdom. Which has been at war with Rory's country for fifty years. His king brother has tasked him with marrying Rory, becoming regent and creating peace between the countries.
Quick moving, well written. Excellent worldbuilding. A fun read with only a little angst for spice. Definitely gonna be a favorite fairytale.

Thank you for arc read, I voluntarily give this book an honest review. Totally read this, if you like a different type of a twisting retelling.
Prince Rory is the male ejaculation of a classic tale.. a wicked stepmother and  halfsister.
An uber unreliable father. Then you get a warring kingdom and unlikely out come of the picked suitors with an alternative motive.

Love the cover. While this had some potential at the beginning (magic??), it more or less devolved into the standard alpha/omega archetypes without much to recommend it re plot. While not poorly written, for me the quickly resolved UST, no MC character growth, supporting characters being fairly cardboard, and disjointed external threats added up to a boring container for the relationship.

This book was so hilaribad. I’ve read fanfic for decades now and I’m like, why does this get published while the good fic is free?

I’m all about marriage of convenience, but by gum it was so poorly executed. I no longer remember what the author was going for.

The book is very poorly written, with way too much exposition, juvenile characterization, and lots of coincidences since the author couldn’t be bothered to set things up properly.

way too much exposition
All the telling, none of the showing. 14% into the book, I estimate ~10-12% was pure exposition, with the author earnestly telling you all you need to know about the story that they’re trying to set up. Instead of, I don’t know, showing it through scenes, dialogue, character interaction, and the like. Pure exposition. This doesn’t let up, by the way; at some point there is a long-ass flashback. I’ve forgotten which of the characters had the flashback—maybe the “alpha”.

juvenile characterization
● Cardboard cutout bad villains who apparently expound on their evil plans at length where anyone could hear them — this is how Rory found out about the queen’s “plot”.
● Rory is a halfwit overtaxing his little omega brain to come up with the same answer of “nothing” constantly. The story drags him along, and he’s barely able to effect any changes to the plotline. What a waste of space.
● There’s a difference between “possessive Alpha” and “abusive Alpha.” West does not know what the difference is. Lexington at some point says “I can’t imagine hurting Rory!” or something to that effect, when at that point he’d already raised his hand to hit Rory (it didn’t land so it doesn’t count—am I right?). I guess his arm is more imaginative than him.
● Lexington and his alpha squad total to four numbskulls with only 1.15 brain cells between them. So much power, and yet, they couldn’t properly “contain” Rory and had to constantly threaten him. Wow, big strong manly men.

lots of coincidences
● That character who finds Rory’s clothes but then conveniently disappears from the book, but also happened to be Rory’s favorite nursemaid’s nephew or something.
● Rory conveniently having his very first heat when the Scooby squad shows up.
● Rory also conveniently not accidentally using any magic until the jerkoff prince gets hurt and he heals him or whatever.
Just everything conveniently dropped in whenever the “time” is “right” instead of building up to it. Just a checklist of things that happen.

■ ■ ■

I think another review mentioned that it’s a waste of a good cover and I agree. That is one fine cover. Unfortunately that is the only good thing about this book.

The story caught my attention, but the writing and the plot was all over the place. I felt more confused trying to follow along than anything. I hated the “witch and magic evil” concept and the alpha was so mean to the omega and yet the omega was all “I love you.” It was just… confusing. Concept could be interesting if a lot of changes were made.

When i first came across Aplhas Kiss i really liked the Cover and i thought the Plot seemed interesting : Snowwhite retelling but make it omegaverse. A young prince with a sick father and an evil stepmother who`s planning to marry him off to a dubious alpha to get him out of the way /have him killed so her own daughter can sit on the throne. Of course he turns out to be the fated mate of the alpha he`s supposed to marry.

I had so many problems with this story and it kept getting worse!?
The Alpha treats him like shit most of the time.
The whole warlock evil magic plot came out of nowhere. Like suddenly he has magic powers and before it wasn´t even hinted at or mentioned or anything and the alpha hates him for this evil power he`s supposed to have inherited from his mother.
I really did not like that he`s so "innocent" and knows literally nothing, also if i remember correctly, in the beginning he seems to know more, like at least something.
The Guy that helps him at the beginning is also so unbelievable and conveniently introduced just for the good fairy cinderella moment of "here are some nice clothes and birth contol" , why would there suddenly be someone who is super nice and helps him and why would anyone trust him.
Towards the end, there are huge jumps from one thing happening to another and its literally all just listed: ups now hes pregnant, oh now ur dad is dead, well now Alpha has to leave, now he dies, now hes not dead...
And then at the very end it`s revealed that his magic was good all along? What about the baby bird that turned into an evil undead monster?
The prota seems to lose his whole personality as soon as he´s married off and two min into them knowing eachother, he professes his undying love to the alpha??
The whole thing seemed not thought through or planned at all, more like something hastily written as part of an exam when the time is running out.

Wow, this one was a struggle to finish. I'm not sure why I even bothered, no sign of intelligent life among the cast of characters.

Spoilers:

1. Rory knows since he's 15 that and he does absolutely NOTHING to plan to prevent that. No plan in sight, no getting some useful knowledge, nothing. Once the plan is in motion he info dumps, why he can't do anything (contradicting himself all the time) every 2-3 pages for the 1/3 of the book.

2. Alphas are assholes, stupid on top of that, but because they're pretty Rory just rolls over and accepts everything. I mean, if those guys are the best this society has to offer then this world is completely ***ked. They base all their plans of assumptions, have no intel (despite claiming they have intel) and treat Rory as shit. Lex pissed me off in particular - this poor excuse of the love interest .

3. It reads like a sketch of a plot written on some piece of paper before making an actual book. Repeated world exposition, characters making plans they forget in the next few pages so they make them again, just more twisted than the previous version. What happened to the impending heat? I felt like it was forgotten for a big part of the story.

Overall this was bad, and not so bad it's funny. Not recommended.

This is not your typical Cinderella story even though it takes place in a magical universe with castles and Kings and Queens.
Prince Rory, only son of the King has just turned nineteen. His father, being in poor health is anxious for Roty to find a suitable mate. Tory has been hidden away most of his life and treated poorly by his evil stepmother. Her plan is to marry him off, wait for the king to die, have his mate, who would become Regent, get rid of Rory, marry his half sister, therefore ensuring the Queen always live the way she has. From the moment Lexington meets Rory he is dmitten but tries to keep his feelings in check.
There is so much more to this story.  Rory's mother, was a very powerful Warlock and the people of Morovia fear her son is the same. Lexington is really Ptince Lexington of Morovia. He has been ordered by his brother,  King Harrison, to marry Rory and bind his powers. Lexington is not only an Alpha, he's also a powerful witch. Rory has no clue he has powers until he feels deep emotion or despair at seeing Lex injured and his powers manifest themselves.
People fear what they don't understand and the Queen of Morovia has him imprisoned and put to death.
Lexington is beyond distraught and goes to the tombs for one last look and goodbye. Surprisingly, Rory is not dead but asleep and Lexington hurriedly gets him out of there and gets him safely to Igella where he will reign as Regent alongside his beloved Omega.
This author can create fantastic worlds that take you away to magical places.  Five stars for Alpha's kiss

CRINNNGGGEEEE..........I had to stop reading it...Alpha is just plain bad.....I refuse to believe that he treated omega poorly due to misunderstanding......I believe he is awful to omega because he's a sexist evil person.....And wtf are author's intentions with omega describing himself getting raped 24*7 when he goes to heat.....And he does that repeatedly initially.....I hate how alpha is delulu thinking he is a good person who is marring a bad person for the sake of his country.....He doesn't know if the rumor that mc is a warlock is actually true......Even if mc did possess dark side , alpha doesn't know if mc would actually act on them.....He himself tells that he and his cousin have a dark side but they control the urge.....Alpha is the worst.....He doesn't know if mc has magic and if he has then doesn't know it is bad magic and if he had bad magic then he doesn't know that mc is evil enough to do evil things.....Without knowing any of this he's ready to lockup omega.....Talks about letting his cousins have sex with him.....Use him as a sex toy......It just shows alpha is just an evil person and not just acting on misunderstandings......He also talks about omegas as sub human....And his older brother saying that if anyone other than Lex marries mc then the kingdom would go to morally corrupt person.....U plan to use someone to gain a kingdom , lockup and use that omega as a sex toy without even knowing anything about said omega and u think others r morally corrupt?.....I had a good laugh at that part......

Good idea but weird pacing

The story has potential, but it suffers from a couple of problems. One is that the pacing is kind of a mess. We have several chapters of events that are told in great detail, moving very slowly. I think we only get about three days in the first half of the book or so. Then it jumps forward in leaps and bounds. Weeks later here, months later there. Then a lot happens again in the last 10% or so. It’s like walking slowly and then all of a sudden being on a rocket ship.i kept thinking, “there gonna be another book after this. There’s no way they’re gonna be able to wrap everything up so quickly”. But, they did. Which leads me to my second big issue, and it’s one I’ve complained about with many books. Show, don’t tell. The author tells us a bunch of things that happen instead of letting the characters show us. At times this story reads like more of a synopsis, which is frustrating. It’s not even 200 pages, so there would have been room to flesh those parts out. It just makes it seem
Ike the author got lazy for those parts, or got tired of the story. Who knows?

As far as the characters, I didn’t really feel like the Alpha earned all the love the Omega gave him fairly early on. It felt a little Stockholm Syndromey rather than actual romance. Plus, the villains didn’t really villain right.

All in all, fairly unsatisfying read.

The plot was actually pretty interesting. It is kinda summarized, but it works well to tell us the backstory, make us understand Lex’s motives, and explain about the world and its rules. Those chapters had me invested, perhaps if the book had focused on the fantasy and not the romance it would’ve been a four-star read.

But sadly the main point aka the romance was boring. The characters behaved like teenagers, had no chemistry, and their interactions were so awkward. Really, it felt weird reading them. The writing was simplistic, there were scenes and characters with no purpose, And yes, I get it, everyone in this book is so handsome cause they are so white and ugly people deserve no love blablabla 🙄

As I said, the plot was good, but the rest of the book was just absurd. And it had quality issues, the text went from being normal to gray to gray-highlighted. I better stay with this quote that made me laugh so much and then move on:

"Fuck that! There's no fucking way a warlock is my 'true mate.' I don't even believe in them."
Brandon grinned at him. "Maybe they believe in you."

I wanted this book to be longer!

I really loved this story. It is an omegaverse romance with magic, what more could you ask for? I was instantly absorbed by the story and I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered that magic would be a part of this story because it was truly unexpected and so unique.

Rory is an omega and the only heir to the Kingdom of Igella and he finds himself married to Lord Lexington who is a prince of Morovia. Rory and Lex's chemistry is instantaneous and it really sold their relationship. I liked both characters but what really intrigued me was the magic. I loved how it is the essential conflict between Lex and Rory and how that plays into the plot.

I would have really liked to delve deep into the magic, why is Rory's magic the way it is and why being a warlock is such a bad thing while witches are considered good. While we get some insight into Rory's magic there is an entire realm of possibility left unexplored. I hope we get to explore this element further in the coming books.

I really like Wyatt, Asher and Brandon and I am excited about the fact that the author plans to write stories for each of them.

This was a really quick read and I really enjoyed it even though I wish we had gotten more of Lex and Rory because I really liked them.
