This is not just a book, it’s a teaching movement. We all want to help students learn to read, but what happens when 67% of children don’t get that chance? 2022 National Report Card data shows that is the reality in the United States right now. But it does not have to be this way! The three most common barriers to successful reading instruction are lack of research-based training, actionable tools, and support. Truly great and interesting introduction to the Science of Reading. Everything is explained easily and makes the science accessible to all. I wish there was just a bit more information on how to implement strategies within your routine.
Really good for teachers wanting to improve their Literacy knowledge - specifically in how reading practices have changed (since I graduated). Long gone are the days of “eagle eye” and “flippy dolphin”. I was inspired to read this after watching my students with dyslexia get support and wanting to improve my practice. It left me feeling like I was on the right track and I have lots to do to continue to improve, especially knowing that 1 in 5 children have dyslexia. As an early years teacher, early intervention is key. A great read with lots of ideas for implementation!
Super accessible look at the research behind the science of reading and its real world application. This isn’t a deep dive, being designed to help teachers integrate new understanding into their classroom practices quickly, but the resource lists at the end give plenty of material for a more extensive look for those who want one (i.e. me). I’ve benefited from using the author’s classroom resources and social media hints for a while now and am really happy to have all this info in one place.
Where was this in college? Bruh I cannot with how poorly reading has been taught AND STILL IS. Put me on a roof so I can scream! Reading should not have trench cycles! There should be a definite, research supported way to introduce sounds, connect them to letter representations, etc. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I FEEL MORE PREPARED.
This is a really great introduction to the science of reading. It goes fairly deep into strategies for early reading instruction, but I think it would be valuable for any elementary teacher. However, it is not a comprehensive overview, but it inspires me to learn more.
This was such a helpful resource and very easy to implement strategies within the classroom. For anyone that is interested in implementing Science of Reading in their classrooms but not be completely overwhelmed this is an amazing resource.
Great basic overview. Easy to understand science breakdowns and real teaching strategies to apply that science. Every teacher that teaches reading should have this book.
