Storm Warning

Rate this book
I’m used to people writing me off as a joke, a peppy blonde with a Southern accent who couldn’t possibly know anything. But this is my spring. I’ve got a fully-funded two weeks to chase tornadoes and no one is getting in my way. Everything is organized and perfect until Julian Lehrer shows up as my co-pilot all summer. We’ve bounced in and out of each other’s lives for almost a decade, and if I know two things, it’s that I’m a damn good scientist and he is the second coming of Satan. It doesn’t help that I have a history of both wanting to strangle and kiss him. Violet Franklin is the pink and glittered star of my nightmares. We disagree about everything except the fact that we cannot stand each other. I did not anticipate spending two weeks chasing tornadoes with her. I also didn’t realize we’d end up teaming up against our two idiot funders and that watching her drive an SUV would turn me on so much. It’s harder and harder to remember why we started fighting in the first place, and easier and easier to remember how we’ve ended up half naked with each other in years past. When mistakes and miscommunication begin to pile up, Violet and Julian are drawn closer and closer – anyone can see that a storm is coming.

Storm Warning is a fun, extremely sexy, and super smart novella, and it is a MUST for fans of Twister!

Told in dual POV and with the use of flashbacks, this rivals-to-lovers romance is full of banter, fun nicknames (Dorothy!), and whole lot of sexual tension. I love Nellie’s books because I usually feel like I’ve learned something after I’ve read them, and this book is no different. These two meteorology nerds definitely geeked out over weather systems and I was here for it.

Thank you to the author for the e-ARC! Storm Warning is out 4/20.

I am all about the novellas these days and this latest from Nellie Wilson was FANTASTIC!! If you grew up in the 90s and were as obsessed with the movie Twister as I was, you seriously cannot miss this second chance romance featuring two rival meteorologists forced to work together for a two week storm chasing expedition.

I loved the flashbacks to when Violet and Julian first met and the women in STEM rep was so well done! I especially enjoyed how Violet handled being a 'pretty' girl who liked girly things (aka makeup and the color pink) but was also a badass scientist who was often discredited because of her gender and looks.

For a small book, this packs a lot of punch and was HIGHLY entertaining. I truly can't recommend it enough. Many thanks to the author for sharing an early digital copy with me in exchange for my honest review!

The reading of this novella is brought to you by: glen powell in a cowboy hat and the two separate times I’ve gone to the theater to see twisters in the last week.

This novella was super cute though. How did we fit seven years of history and multiple tornadoes in 155 pages? I truly don’t know but I had a great lil time reading it

I'm only four chapters in and I am LOVING this novella!!! It has Nellie's trademark humour, mixed with calling out the patriarchy, and, of course, the seeds of romance.

UPDATE:

Love, love, love this book. Nellie is a queen of writing characters who are relatable and whom I would love to hang out with in real life. Violet and Julian are sympathetic characters, who have their strengths and weaknesses and are definitely not flawless. From the get go, I was rooting for both of them, not just to get together and have their HEA, but to achieve their career goals, to grow as humans, to not be held back by the YouTube bros who are sexist a-holes.

Nellie incorporates flashbacks in this book with huge success. Each flashback takes us further and further back in time, with the final flashback being seven years before the present when Violet and Julian first meet. This approach shows us the journey of the two characters as individuals and as a couple, when they fought, f*cked, hung out, and first met. I loved these little snippets of information that helped me, as a reader, to better understand the relationship dynamics that exist between Violet and Julian today, the feelings that have developed over the years, the judgments they have held towards each other.

The book, in my opinion, also does a great job of showing how impressive and terrifying tornadoes can be. I grew up in southern Ontario's tornado ally, and have experienced a few tornados and funnel clouds. Once you've been through one, you never forget what it's like. How the sky takes on a greenish tinge, how still and silent it is as the birds have departed so there's no chirping. Then the wind comes. and you just hope for the best. And if there's damage and clean-up required, you get out there and you start helping your neighbours and community to the best of your ability. But then you never forget.

There's only one thing I would change about the book and that is to make it available as a paperback so I can add it to my shelves alongside Need S'more Time and Curated!!

Huge thanks to Nellie for the advance copy of the novella. Opinions are entirely my own.

Well. That was bad.

Honestly, it was a cute idea and I’m still so freaking obsessed with Twisters that it shouldn’t have been too hard to make me happy, but my god that was poorly written. Do yourself a favour and just go read Twisters fanfiction.

As a woman in STEM, I love a good story featuring an FMC working in a STEM field, and this was just that. Julian and Violet have quite the chemistry…and history. And not exactly the best history. When they get paired to go storm chasing, the storms, both inside and outside of the car start brewing. I loved the multiple timelines and getting snippets of their past interactions which helped to enhance their current day dynamics as they drive about in their vehicle, lovingly named Trunchbull. The banter, the snark, the spice…so good! (Tho Julian better stop trash talking the SEC, or we’re gonna have words.)

I also appreciated all of the little moments we got to see between the two, including a discussion about the Waffle House Index. As someone born and raised in the south knows, it's a real thing! Throw in an ‘only one bed’ moment, and I am done for. This was such a fun novella, and I can’t wait to read more from this author!

This was a fun KU novella about rival storm chasers who love twisters and sexy banter. I thought this was a big improvement from her debut. The writing and pacing were definitely stronger. Often romance novellas feel lacking to me, but this was fleshed out and felt like a complete story. Predictable and easy, but enjoyable nonetheless.

What to expect: only one bed, enemies to lovers, reverse timeline/flashbacks, women in STEM

This novella was funny, swoony, spicy, and not too speedy! The dual/reverse timeline was fantastic and I loved getting to see their relationship throughout the years. Since a lot of novellas often fall into the "insta-love" category, I was glad to see that this one didn't.

The storm chasing aspect was really well done (I mean it sounded so I am not a scientist). I didn't feel like anything was too technical where I didn't understand it, and I was able to learn a little bit about storm chasing. I also loved the mix in of social media & YouTube!

With Violet & Julian, obvi I loved them! Their banter was perfect and I loved watching them push each others buttons. Them seeing each other at conferences was just totally how I would be if I went to those. Every time Julian put his hat on backward I screamed.

Shoutout the the champagne, you da real MVP

I’m a sucker for anything storm related, so I had high hopes for this. And parts of this were super cute and a fun take on a second-chance romance. However, with two POVs and two timelines (one of them going in reverse to when the characters first met) I found myself getting lost and unable to really understand the dynamics between the characters. I did also like the one moment where the male character has a moment of body insecurity, which I rarely see depicted but always enjoy because I feel like it’s always a female character who experiences that. Overall a fast, easy read for this time of year and for anyone who ever grew up loving the movie Twister.

(Also, this is nitpicky, but the main couple waits out a tornado under and underpass WHICH IS SO NOT WHAT YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO DO. A simple google will tell you this. Sincerely, a midwesterner who is tired of watching movies where people do this lol.)

“You’ve noticed all this about me?” Julian asks. “I thought you hated me.”
“Even when I hated you, I still noticed you.”

this is what i spent my day doing and i’m not mad about it. obviously, i saw twisters yesterday and saw this book on tiktok so i had to immediately read it. its a novella so its only like 150 pages so it was a super easy fun read. its dual pov and dual time line (which can sometimes be a little confusing). but i ended up liking it more than expected (for someone who claims to hate romance books but that’s clearly not true anymore).

so if you’re looking for a cute and easy read about some storm chasers stuck together with kind of an enemies to lovers kinda vibe…this is for you

I have come to the realization that I will love EVERYTHING that Nellie Wilson writes.

Her characters have this incredible realness and depth that I crave in books. They have flaws and immense personality that helps me clearly see them as real people. Julian and Violet were no different.

I am also a sucker for second chance romance (with strong communication), dual point of view, and dual timeline. I really loved how the dual timeline gave us a strong overview of their past relationship/interactions.

Julian and Violet have a passion for the weather - tornadoes, storm cells, and seeing them in person (safely of course). So when an opportunity comes up to work with two YouTuber influencers to share their passion with the world, Violet jumps at the chance. Only to discover that Julian is also asked to join them - who just so happens to be a moral enemy of hers.

It broke me the way that the YouTubers referred to Violet, because they are convinced that women are just meant to be pretty on their channel when Violet is out to show the world that women BELONG in science.

My only complaint about the book? The fact that its a novella. I wanted more of Julian and Violet. More of their past, present, and future. I also wanted more of their tornado chasing adventures. I’m crossing fingers that Nellie will decide to write more of them because I want to read all of their tornado chasing adventures.

Content warnings: misogyny, death of a parent (in the past)

This was exactly what I needed after seeing Twisters and honestly finding it kind of a let down. I know this is an unpopular opinion but I'm old and I grew up on Twister and lemme tell y'all, Twister has HEART and Twisters just has Glen Powell being horny for tornadoes.

Anywho. This was a cute romance novella about rival meteorologists who end up storm chasing together and the years' long history between them. A good time was had, but I finished it like ten days ago and I basically remember nothing. So.

Nellie Wilson absolutely nails this fun and romantic story about storm chasers/meteorologists! Packing all of the back story and drama of a full length book into a novella (no simple task!), she leaves the reader chef’s kiss satisfied with their happy ever after. Everyone is going to fall in love with Violet and Julian.
I’m such a huge fan of Nellie’s and encourage anyone who hasn’t already read her earlier books to add them to your TBR lists!!
Keep these amazing stories coming, Nellie! ❤️

This was a cute little novella. I went in knowing it was a novella and that it would be short but I wish it was a full length book, I think the characters and the romance could have really benefitted from that.

I initially enjoyed the use of flashbacks, when it was just about their last encounter. But, I feel like the use of flashbacks was a bit too much and they weren’t formatted to be distinct from the other chapters so there were a few times I missed the “___ year(s) ago” and was very confused.

I love the premise, especially after watching twisters, I just felt like the romance and plot line were rushed and I think I would have enjoyed this way more if it was allowed to take its time.

ARC Review

When I finished Need S'More Time and while I slowly progress through Curated, I knew I needed more of this Universe. The Universe where strong women, especially those in STEM fields and teaching (a profession I know from experience takes EVERYTHING YOU HAVE), are at the forefront, respected (except by YouTube dude bros) and revered by golden retriever men.

Violet is the best. Period. Hot as hell, sex positive, badass lady who chases storms? I'll take one please.

Julian is a puppy dog honestly, all the parts of June that I loved so deeply, with a clear Colin influence there (soft and gentle and probably wears socks and sandals when Violet isn't looking. Doppler judges him).

"Even when I hated you, I still noticed you"

Damn. How do you verbalise in modern terms "I was in the middle before I even knew I had begun"? Like that. Just like that.

I have no more coherent thoughts at this time. Except, I want to try Waffle House.

Oh what fun I had reading this novella, which should be no surprise to anyone since y’all know how much I love anything Nellie writes 😌

Did I ever think I would read a story about 2 hot and nerdy meteorologists chasing tornados? No. Would I do it again? Yes, in a damn heartbeat.

I’m so happy we got a glimpse into Julian’s life. If y’all are familiar with the Nellie Cinematic Universe you’ll know that Julian is June’s brother that was briefly mentioned in Need S’more Time. He’s an ex football player turned meteorologist bro, but he’s a bro I’d feel comfortable leaving my drink around. Ugh and omg I freakin love Violet! She’s girly and smart and loves makeup and wears cute clothes and knows she’s a damn good meteorologist. I love that she stands up for herself and doesn’t hide her love of all things girly and pink even when men look down on her for it. Also, she’s a southern sweetheart that I know I’d be instant friends with. We’d bond over our love of Waffle House, southern sweet tea, and Taylor Swift 💙

As always, the spice is top tier (there’s a coat closet scene that had me squealing…), the banter really sells the enemies to lovers, and their HEA made me audibly saw awwwwwww. The timeline jumping was so cool and honestly really impressive. Seriously, pick this book up the instant it’s out! Speaking of, Storm Warning is out on April 20th 🥳

Thanks to Nellie for giving me the opportunity to beta read!

This is my favourite of Nellie's couples so far! I loved the banter, the dual POV, the flashbacks (going all the way back to Violet and Julian's first meeting 7 years ago), the simmering sexual tension. The storm chasing was a fun bonus and brought the Twister vibes I was hoping for!

Violet's spark and love of all things pink really spoke to me; though I've never been worried that people don't take me seriously due to my looks, I do skew quite girly and that can cause some people to underestimate my interests or abilities. I loved how competent she is and I hope she and Julian turn up in future books!

While I really enjoy most of the book, it left me more confused. I’m good with going back in time but I’m not a fan of the time kept going backwards even further each time. Didn’t flow right to me and then it felt like a few big scenes were just skipped ahead.

I did enjoy the whole enemies to lovers thing they had going and the banter. Also love how he was sticking up for her to the twister bros. I can’t stand those sexist boys.

Alright, I get it. Pretty girls don’t do science you don’t have to say it every five sentences. Or even the fact that she is just so pretty. Also if you read this did you catch that he is in fact a red head and blushes like a red head? Because I sure didn’t.

This entire thing was just so repetitive. It was not that steamy which was what I was expecting. Plus at the end apparently they just went straight into loving each other. I’m being generous by rounding up if I’m honest. The only blessedly good thing was that it was short.

You guys, I truly am living my best life reading all these fantastic romances. I feel so grateful to the pals I’ve made on bookstagram and the authors that trust me with their work, words, and ideas. Y’all are truly incredible people. One such, legitimately incredible homie is Nellie Wilson. I am so excited to be able to share my advance review of Storm Warning, an absolute delight of an enemies to lovers novella.

I’d like to thank Nellie for the advance copy, thoughts below are my own, enjoy.

I’ll get this out of the way early: I LOVED this romance so much. Friends, it sparkles. From the roasting of each other, to the storm chasing, to the dual timelines and deeply smart dialog Storm Warning needs to be on everyone’s radar (see what I did there).

There is something that I so deeply connect with, in the way in which Nellie crafts, plots, paces and writes her romances. There is delicious build up. Small glimpses of depth that build and build until you are surrounded by such well-formed characters that you never want to leave them. There is also such well lived in women. She really does write elite-tier FMCs. They are bold and nuanced and unapologetic, and I love each one she’s written.

There is also something really (really) satisfying in the way her MCs see each other. Yes of course the smut is also insanely good (hello to my bi-panic throughout this entire read), but the quiet moments where soft or simmering emotion takes over–are some of the most memorable I’ve read. Who would have thought I would be grinning at my kindle like a lunatic over the mutual nerding out over how cool a tornado is.

I also LOVED, loved loved how we bee-bopped between present day and past. It layered so much to this novella that this world she’s created here is SO rich. There are perfect glimpses into Julian and Violet both individually and collectively, that will have you DEVOURING this romance. I promise you.

Pick this one up for:
• Roasting you is my love language
• Only one bed
• Immaculate banter
• An extremely well thought out thesis on Mrs. Trunchbull
• 420 friendly MCs
• Eviscerating a pair of tech-bros

I hope you’ll grab this one when it lands at retailers April 20th (420, represent) or grab it on pre-order now so we can talk about how much of a fucking DELIGHT this is.

A cute short read that, for all its lack of actual tornado-related plot (besides the fact that they’re chasing them), somehow built up this pretty adorable rivals/fwb/coworkers/second-chance love story. it was a rushed ending, but for a novella it was nice!

Such a cutesy novella! twisters has been on my mind constantly since I watched it so this is exactly the kind of book i needed lol.

“I snap a photo in that moment, then grab a video of the storm behind her. We’re so small compared to this storm, just two tiny humans in the face of this monster of nature, and I am truly in awe.”

I loved this! A spicy twister short story. I just wish there was more. Why did it have to be a novella? lol I would’ve loved for this to be a full novel with more detail of them getting caught in the storm. I just needed more!
