Alex Quinn #2

Second, Death

Rate this book
Interpol agent Alex Quinn, 29, born to Italian-Turkish parents, is a multi-lingual genius. With an advanced degree in Criminal Psychology from a university in France and a PHD from a Germany university, Alex was recruited by Interpol at the age of 25—their youngest recruit—because of her encyclopedic knowledge of serial killers. When a body is found hanging from the rafters of the Notre Dame in Paris, Alex is dispatched immediately—but this killer may just be the match she has yet to meet…
SECOND, DEATH is book #2 in a new series by #1 bestselling and critically acclaimed mystery and suspense author Rylie Dark, whose books have received over 2,000 five-star reviews and ratings.

With killers preying in high-trafficked historic sites, Interpol convenes a special task force to hunt them down before panic spreads—and finds no one better to head up this new force than Alex Quinn.

Beautiful in an exotic way, with a mixture of her Mediterranean heritage, Alex, with her olive complexion and startling green eyes, bears a pencil thin scar along one hand from the palm to the tip of a finger—a scar that keeps her single-mindedly focused on avenging her parents.

Able to solve cases in record time, Alex has been all over Europe for nearly a decade. Yet one killer still eludes her.

The man who killed her parents.

The darkness of past propels her—yet it also threatens to swallow her whole…

A page-turning and harrowing crime thriller featuring a brilliant and tortured Interpol agent, the Alex Quinn series is a riveting mystery, a cat-and-mouse thriller packed with non-stop action, suspense, twists and turns, revelations, and driven by a breakneck pace that will keep you flipping pages late into the night. Fans of Rachel Caine, Teresa Driscoll and Robert Dugoni are sure to fall in love.

Okay, so Second Death by Rylie Dark? Total page-turner. It’s the second book in the Alex Quinn series, and I didn’t expect to get pulled in that fast — but here we are. Alex is this brilliant, no-nonsense Interpol agent with a PhD in Criminal Psych, fluent in like five languages, and has the energy of someone who drinks black coffee and stares down murderers for fun. I love her. The setup is creepy in the best way- a body found hanging in Notre Dame, no leads, and a killer who knows how to play games. And Alex? She’s got her own baggage, so the case hits extra hard. The plot moves fast — like, “I meant to read one chapter and it’s midnight and I forgot to feed the cat” fast. And the twist? I did not see it coming. Like, at all. I’m pretty good at guessing the villain but this one got me. Readers are loving it — it's sitting around 4 stars on here — and I get why. It’s smart, tense, and kind of elegant in a morbid way? Very much gives “if Agatha Christie had Wi-Fi and trauma” vibes. So if you’re into twisty mysteries, grey detectives, and books that make you mutter “oh no no no” to yourself this one’s worth picking up. Just don’t start it before bed unless you plan on seeing 3 a.m.

My first impression was that the cover didn’t match the genre at all. If I chose a book based purely on the cover, I would have skipped this one entirely. This was the second book in the series, and I read this without reading the first. There were some references to the previous case but nothing that made reading the instalments in order a prerequisite. The prologue was incredibly promising - a tourist follows a trail of blood while on a tour of a French cathedral… but unfortunately the plot lost its way soon after. I felt this was trying to be a female-led “The Da Vinci Code” but didn’t hit the mark in the slightest. The ending comprised a predictable cliffhanger. Disappointing.

Second, Death

Unbelievable!

This one was shocking to the core! That some minds are so twisted that they actually believe that what they do is good - shocking! But they really do exist. Do not read if you are faint-hearted!

Second, Death is an easy-to-read story, full of mystery, religious details, and horrific crimes. Alex and her partners run against the clock to find the serial killer who is making people frightened in Paris. I enjoyed reading about Alex's partners, one American and the other German, with their idiosyncrasies and mannerisms antagonizing each other. She also gets in touch with her sister who will bring news regarding her parents' case.

I read the first one and didn't like it much. I don't know why I read the second one 🤷‍♀️ Parts of the story line were interesting and gave the book some potential, but overall, forgettable. Some things happen that are just totally a stretch and not believable at all. Plus the cliff hanger that the first one ended on isn't addressed until the very end, and even then it isn't resolved at all and is used as a cliff hanger AGAIN. Overall, underwhelming. 🫤

Second Death

This book had an instant death with me when the writer used language to profane the sacred and the f-bomb.

vague

I struggled to read this to the end. Not really a convincing plot or characters. Not wanting to read more of the same again.

The twists and turns keep you guessing almost to the very end. Innocent victims pile up while the killer stalks with impunity.

At the start, I was afraid that I had overrated the last book of the series that I had read, because this started off horribly, for me. It, however, didn't take long for me to realise, that no, my original assessment was NOT wrong! I still love the primary character, and I continue to appreciate relationships and interactions with others.
I was afraid that it would be way too Christian for me, but no, we were dealing with psychological defects and complex motivations and backgrounds. Another successful case :)

Did he do it just because they didn't give him a part in the production ? The story was a bit disjointed for me and the catacombs coming up into the back of a tumble drier and being able to disable a police station from underneath it seemed a bit of a stretch but the characters and the detective work were well thought out, some half baked skeletal actor student with a vague knowledge of Aramaic slipping into madness and killing the film production crew ought to have been easier to catch though as he was travelling naked and starved around Paris most of the time.
