I wish I remembered more about my parents. As time goes on, the details fade. Time is like the shroud, I guess. Eating away. One thing I do remember about my mother, though, was that she loved guessing endings. She could figure out the ending of any movie we were watching. Not just the twist, but the twist after the twist. I remember turning to her on our old couch and asking her how she knew, and she'd wave a hand at the screen and say, "simple, jo-jo, you just follow the threads."
To my mother, stories were just threads weaving in and out of each other to form something bigger, something with meaning. If you knew how to follow each one, see where it was going, you could figure out the bigger design from just a few patterns. Maybe it came from a life studying water, the flow and rhythm. But five minutes in, I’d ask, "does this one have a happy ending mom?"
The story is set 15 years after the spread of the deadly infection that has blighted the Earth. The shroud devoured everything in its wake leaving humanity to survive in makeshift towers built atop of diamond foundations, the only substance known to resist the darkness wave.
In one such group of towers, known as 'kits' we meet our protagonists. Barely surviving, the community has to pay a 'protection' fee to a local menace, Charon, who tells of terrors beyond the settlement, creatures born within the shroud, which he alone can keep at bay.
When Charon unexpectedly attacks the settlement, everyone is confused as the tithe has been paid. However, Charon is after something altogether different. He seeks a traveller with a secret. Unbenounced, the traveller has found their kit and is found collapsed at the base of one of the needles.
When recovered the mysterious stranger tells of a natural formation of 'black diamond' and a sanctuary for all those who can get there. Intrigued, the gang set off with their new 'friend' in tow.
They will discover there is a lot more to the shroud than they currently known and will face unprecedented terrors!
This continues to thrill. I look forward to reading the rest of the series as they come out. 5 stars.
It feels like an eternity between issues 2 & 3! I thought I will have to read the first two issues again to brush up on what had happened, but that wasn't necessary.
I still don't know where this story is going, but the artwork is fun and this issue is all about movies, and endings. And the film geek that I am - I really enjoyed this issue. Plus, it ends on a weird unexpected cliffhanger.
Really enjoyed this issue. I am coming to terms with imagining the world overtaken by this "shroud" and living in these really small places(needles) across the world. I am still having a hard time imagining the travel by threads. Just ziplining across the plains to get to the unknown. Side note: I wanna punch Rowan in the FACE!!!!
I continue to love the story, the world and the graphics. The cover of this issue is by the way my favorite so far. My only frustration is that it’s too short. Great cliffhanger at the end. Rushing to issue #4
The adventure continues as the friends progress in their exploration of the world and ends in another cliffhanger. The art is good and the story has become robust. Eager to go through to the next one
