Calico Cove #4

Can't Take The Heat?

Rate this book
Celebrity chef Antony Renard has been banished to Calico Cove while his bad-boy reputation gets a makeover, but just because he’s famous—and hotter than a french fry—doesn’t mean he gets whatever he lays those ice-blue eyes on…namely, me.

This food truck girl knows he’s out of my league and probably has a trail of broken hearts that lead back to his kitchen in California. The chemistry that flares hot between us doesn’t matter. We’re total opposites. He’s a control freak and I hate rules. He dates models and I date…um, no one.

Yet the more Antony comes around demanding to try my delicacies, the more I begin to crave his wicked charm. And the more I want…just a taste…of him.

*

The whole town swears Birdie makes the best sandwiches for miles. Not that I would know because each time I show up at her food truck, she refuses to serve me anything but a sassy smile that makes me want to lick those strawberry-red lips.

But when we’re forced to work together to help a local teen, I have to prove I’m more than my bad PR and show Birdie that I’m worth the risk, even if I’m everything she never wanted.

Author's This slow burn, enemies to lovers romance with a found family brings all the feels. It serves up a deliciously grumpy hero and the spicy-sweet heroine who just can't resist him. Oh, and there are falafels. Because why not?

REVIEW
This book had me giggling at some of the shenanigans (him opening a food truck for a day right by hers out of pettiness), and then it would make me feel bad for giggling because it hurt feelings (it was fun and games until it WASN’T).

I didn’t particular like or dislike Antony and Birdie. They made sense as a couple and had cute moments, but they didn’t have a lot of chemistry.

I absolutely loved the Nick storyline. A teenager with a troubled home life/past who is welcomed by the main characters with open arms? More, PLEASE. I’ve read this trope maybe three times out of the hundreds of romance books I’ve read, and I NEED IT TO HAPPEN MORE OFTEN.

The storylines outside of the romance were concluded too quickly after the build up of them. Antony tells his therapist-not therapist-therapist about his father, and then that’s that? The contest happened, and we didn’t get to see the results? Genevieve has years-old beef with her father but we only got two conversations with him? Questions were answered, but it didn’t feel complete.

As always, the third act breakup was silly and lightly angsty, but alas, that is the romcom way. BUT to its credit, it was resolved almost immediately.

OW/OM DRAMA none
CHEATING none
THIRD ACT BREAKUP yes
ENDING HEA — six months later epilogue

My second book from Hailey Shore and after finishing Can’t Take the Heat I need to read the other books in the Calico Cove series. Not because it’s necessary before reading this one but because I enjoy her writing so freaking much especially all the characters from Calico Cove.

This story is a “dislike” and friends to lovers along with found family romance. Antony and Birdie were so much fun. Their chemistry was strong and their banter and games hilarious. Behavior can be deceiving and theirs were definitely just that. The whole falafel debacle was so much fun.
Birdie and Antony share some hurt when it comes to their fathers and found common ground when Nick the teenager enters the mix.
Nick was such great addition to the story and for Antony and Birdie as well.

The slow burn was good and when it finally exploded it did with a bang. I’ve only read book 1 so it was good to be back with those characters and also be introduced to the others. It only made me more excited to return to the Cove.
Such a wonderful feel good romance with fab characters.

This is a reread. I wanted to read it again as her next book is out in a day or two and the H/h in her upcoming book place roles in this one.

I loved it just as much this time around as I did the first time.

If you love small town romance, quirky characters, chemistry between hero and heroine and just a overall feel good book then Can't Take The Heat is one you need to read. It's the fourth book in the Calico Cove series and like the previous three, it's just delightful.

Birdie is the heroine in this one. She's the niece of Madame Ka, a quirky character in each book. Birdie has had a fight with her father and runs away to stay with her aunt. She runs a food truck and is now staying in town running her food truck and preparing for a prestigious cooking competition. New to town is Antony, a world renowned chef. We met him in the first book. He's at a crisis point in his life and is hiding in Calico Cove. He hears everyone raving about Birdie's food and decides he needs to try it out.

Birdie recognizes him of course, both being in the food industry and freaks that this famous chef wants to try her food. She's not ready. And when he annoys her, coming across as arrogant, she refuses to sell him any and the battle is on. She refuses to let him try her falafel and he refuses to give up on getting hold of one.

I just love the back and forth ongoing battle between these two. While they are bickering, they are falling in love and when you add in a runaway and homeless teenage boy, they both become involved in helping him out. Their banter is delicious and both such likeable people. The people from the previous books play a role and the book has a great 'coming home' vibe to it that helped keep me smiling though most of the book. This one gets two thumbs 👍👍 up from me.

I was so excited for a continuation of Calico Cove and I started reading this the day it came out!

It was definitely a different vibe from her other calico cove books, but I liked having the variety. I’m not normally a big “found family” person, but this one was good. The main focus wasn’t really on Tony and Gen, but more so on them helping Nick, especially since they both so related to what he was going through.

My only complaint is that they helped “rehabilitate” Nick, but there wasn’t really a good conclusion to the problems Antony and Genevieve were going through due to their owns pasts. Gen’s reconciliation with her dad felt super rushed at the end and Tony was going to therapy but we never had a resolution for his problems.

Despite the lack of overall romance, I really did enjoy this book! Hailey has created such a fully fleshed out town with so many characters and I love them all. I’m super excited for the traveling photographer’s story (can’t remember his name) and hope his book comes soon!

This was very fun and cute read for me.

Birdie and Anthony were really nice MC's. I had soo much fun when it comes to their little war for Birdie's sandwich. Considering that Tony was a famous chef, his behaviour was really down to earth. He wasn't grumpy or something like that. Birdie on the other hand was a sunny person, that still had some insecurities when it comes to food. After all their differences I personally think that they are the perfect team together.

There was quite good amount of heat and smut in this book, which I just looooved and it was sexy. I love reading my smut 🥵🥵🥵.

Overall, I enjoyed reading Birdie and Anthony's story. If you're looking for sweet, romantic read, this book is for you.

‘Can’t Take The Heat’ was a fun story I definitely enjoyed reading. Starting with the setting of Calico Cove. Not only do I just love reading about a small town, this town just is something special. I love reading about the small town setting, the fishing everyone seems to do, the poker nights with alle these different characters. And above all the food and restaurants. It just sounded so much fun.

Since I love cooking and baking myself, which I haven’t been doing as much lately, I really loved the food element in this book. Reading a romance story about two people who love food and cooking was just a lot of fun. And although in the beginning it definitely wasn’t a positive conversation point between Birdie and Antony, I just loved how intense they both where about their cooking.

The romance between Birdie and Antony was fun and sexy. And I loved how they both changed each other’s life for the better. They both had these issues with their pasts they had to overcome, and they both helped each other in the end. Add the cute side character of teenager Nick and I definitely enjoyed this read.

The one thing I didn’t love as much in this book was Birdie’s character. I found her a bit frustrating and immature at times. The way she always seemed to leave at sudden moments. And how she just kept denying Antony her sandwich. I mean really? I understood why, but still it irritated me a little. But luckily I loved Antony’s character so much it totally made up for my little issues with Birdie.

‘Can’t Take The Heat’ was a fun read I definitely enjoyed. I really hope to read more books set in Calico Cove soon.

Characters:
Birdy & Tony

Subpar Synopsis:
After a public outburst in his famous restaurant, Antony retreats to his friend’s house for some time away from the spotlight and to find a way to deal with his behavior. He meets and becomes I’m obsessed with Birdy’s food truck after hearing everyone harp on about how amazing her falafels are but, despite many attempts, he can’t seem to get his hands on one.

Birdy’s food truck is finally getting notice as she is invited to a prestigious contest, an opportunity she feels her father (a overbearing Michelin-star chef) isn’t impressed by. She decides to run away to her aunt’s town for a reprieve after they butt heads on the issue until the contest and then plans to continue her nomadic lifestyle from town to town. When she first sees Antony, she’s immediately unimpressed, thinking of him in the same light as her father. As Antony persists trying to get closer to her (and her falafels), they both encounter a young teen on the run and, having similar runaway pasts, they decide to work together to help him.

Thoughts:
This one was really sweet. The “found family” trope definitely got a level-up and it was absolutely heartwarming. This is not the first book from this town’s series but I give kudos to the author for not making it depend on its predecessor. Even though you could tell characters came back, it wasn’t just name-dropping left and right where you feel confused and need a chart.

Overall: 4.2/5

Birdie doesn’t live in Calico Cove but she has a food truck and goes there to see her aunt and sell her Burrito’s or whatever it was

Anthony is a famous chef who got angry in his restaurant and threw a plate and it was recorded so he went to visit Mal and decides to lay low in the cove

Birdie is kind of childish. He tries to get some of her food and she wont serve him. Then when he finally gets her to serve him he doesn’t eat it straight away so she storms over to him and throws it on the floor. There is a lot of wasted food in these books.

He hires a homeless boy to go get his food for him but she figures it out and still doesn’t serve him. I don’t even know why at this point

It was funny when he bought a truck to be her rival but it didn’t last long enough. One day if I remember.

All the way through Birdie is going to some food truck competition and then she is moving on, she has no plans to return to the cove for a while.

Nick the homeless boy is now living with Anthony which I just loved what he did for him. Birdie did things for him too but Anthony let him live with him and bought him clothes and a phone.

They have a smooch in the lighthouse that doesn’t end well and leads to Anthony having to apologise then they do things to each other. This is a slow burn and its about 70% before this happens

Nick runs away and when they find him Birdie gives him a hug and says she was so worried. He shrugs her off and says something like your leaving don’t pretend to care.

Birdie and Anthony have sex for the first time and the next morning he makes her breakfast using her recipe and she flips out. She overreacted so much it made me laugh. She runs off and leaves the cove.

All the way through she has hid from him that her dad is a famous chef but he hates that she drives the food truck and thinks she should work in a proper restaurant . So we get to the competition and Anthony and Nick show up and the guest judge, you guessed it, her dad. He tastes the food and assumes it was Anthony who made them and praises him. He finds out it was his Daughter and suddenly everything is ok and she is moving to the cove with Anthony.

The end was wrapped up a little fast but the epilogue was good.

I wasn’t a big fan of Birdie (or her name) but she did get better but I loves Anthony and Nick. They were a good team and I loved their ending more

Can’t Take the Heat is an enemies to lovers, slow burn romance by Hailey Shore. Birdie returns to Calico Cove in her food truck to seek refuge with her aunt after another argument with her father. She runs into celebrity chef Antony, who is doing a bit of running of his own after a viral video sent him into hiding. Under all the bickering is an attraction flickering beneath the surface. Is there hope for a lasting future? Or will there issues from their pasts prevent them from being happy?

This was my first experience reading this author, and I was pleasantly surprised. The world building of Calico Cove was interesting, and the characters were compelling and relatable. I loved the feisty banter and games between Birdie and Antony—so funny!!😂 The slow burn aspect was fun to watch, and when the buildup finally paid off, the result was explosive and steamy!!🔥🔥 I appreciated the way their emotions were portrayed authentically, and the way they were able to connect on that level. The addition of Nick added so much to the story and to Birdie and Tony’s dynamic. I look forward to returning to Calico Cove in the future.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This should be called Daddy Issues: a Novel. Such a letdown after loving the previous books in this series. I am really over characters that need therapy more than a new relationship.

So many things about Birdie annoyed me. First, she runs away from home because she doesn’t want to follow in her dad’s footsteps, only to do the same job?!?

Second, she has a food truck with one item. One. Not even variations of one type of thing. And yet people line up to eat falafel day after day? Not buying it.

Third, she wants to build a reputation, but moves her food truck cross country constantly to avoid ever talking to her dad. So no consistency in location. There’s no way she would be competing in a food truck competition with no reputation built and a single menu item.

Fourth, she’s been avoiding her dad for seven years, then when he crosses her path and eats her magic falafel they’re all reconciled. That’s not how toxic family relationships work.

Basically she’s an annoying, neurotic coward who repeatedly provokes Antony into a competition until he shows her up, then all of a sudden she’s all butt hurt.

I never felt like Birdie and Antony had chemistry, to the point that I had to skip the 🌶️ because it felt gross. I did like the parts with Nick, but it was completely unrealistic that the three of them would form a strong family bond in, like, two weeks.

Overall a massive disappointment that makes me question continuing the series.

3.5 Stars
Three completely different people who meet, come together and realize they have more in common with each other than they ever thought.

I have enjoyed the previous books in this series. I love this quaint sea side town and it’s colorful residents. But I really struggled to get through this book.
Birdie. She makes her living out of her food truck. Criss crossing the country. Never in one place for long. She’s come to Calico Cove seeking a safe place to land after yet another go around with her dad. The locals look forward to her setting up shop in town.
Antony. Three star Michelin chef. Owns a very popular restaurant in Napa valley California. Usually very even tempered. Until a serious kitchen melt down that was caught on tape goes viral. He’s come to Calico Cove to lay low and get some help. He’s heard all about Birdies famous falafel sandwiches and sets out to try one.
The last thing Birdie needs or wants is some fancy chef tasting and critiquing her food. Not to mention the unsolicited advice he’s screaming at her.
I liked Antony. He’s not perfect, he knows this. He’s horribly ashamed of his behavior with his staff. He’s doing everything he can to put himself in a better place mentally before going back. Riling up Birdie helps bring him back. He enjoys their back and forth, the games, the words. There’s something about her he just likes.
Birdie I did not like. I get the whole “daddy issue” she has. But I found her childish and immature. She acted more like a spoiled brat than the successful business person she wanted to be. Stomping her feet, taking her food from Tony and smashing it into the ground. And when he thinks he’s figured out how to play her game, she stomps off and cries. When things get to real, she storms off, then she runs. I had a hard time picking the book up to continue reading. She just drove me nuts.
I did love the addition of Nick. The teenage runaway who they take in and help.
Overall it’s really not a bad story, I just struggled.
It’s told in dual points of view, no cheating. After Tony chases her down, again, they do eventually find a happy ending.

Birdie (Genevieve) is back in Calico Cove to visit her Aunt Za, and to prove something to her father.
Antony Renard is in Calico Cove, lying low, after an incident if his three star restaurant. He needs some time to get everything back in order, and to get his priorities right.
When one day, he sees a food truck in town that sells (according to everybody in town) the best falafels, he needs to taste one. But he is out of luck, because she’s sold out a few customers before him. And so it goes on for a few days. Cause Birdie does not want a top chef tasting her falafels.
But it seems they have more in common then they think, and together they have to find a way to handle life. Even if there may be some trouble along the way.

I was so happy to go back to Calico Cove. Can’t Take the Heat is a small town romcom. At first they do not really like each other, Birdie has no problem turning him away, time and time again. But Antony is determined to taste her food.
The chemistry between these two characters was there from the start, but somehow Birdie keeps him at arm’s length. It was a slowburn, but that doesn’t make the story any less.

This was my first book by Ms. Shore and I totally enjoyed it. Birdie and Antony kept me entertained throughout. It was fun to read a story about a chef that started out with my thinking he was a jerk, ended up with me loving how he evolved not only in his relationship with Birdie but with Nick too. Birdie, on the other hand, reminded me of a younger me, so unsure of herself and always ready to run. I felt so bad for all Nick had to go through in his young life and can see why he was pivotal to the story.. he was the catalyst to cement the friendship and eventually love between Antony and Birdie. I also enjoyed the supporting characters and may go back to read the other books about Calico Cove.

Now for a few negatives, one I think there should have been more follow-up between Birdie and her father since her turmoil with him was her downfall throughout the story. Also, the story had a rather abrupt ending. I do think the author should have put in another chapter or two to tie everything up. And no, I did not read the bonus epilogue. I hate having to give personal contact info to get bonus book chapters.

Overall the theme remains the same, lobe conquers all.

I loved this addition to the Calico Cove series! I have to say, this author has such a gift for writing witty banter between her main characters. I’m not a big enemies to lovers fan (I hate when they just constantly argue). But Birdie and Antony were hilarious together. They were bitter enemies, yet they had this intense chemistry and as I said, the banter between them was so well done.

As with the other books in this series, I loved all side characters. I loved the storyline with Nick, the homeless teenager that Birdie and Antony were trying to help. The character development was fantastic all around. The scenes with other characters were hilarious. I have to say that baby Nora stole the show lol. None of this took away from the romance though. It just made the story more enjoyable.

Now, Birdie and Antony don’t truly “get together😉” until about 85% in and usually that would be way too late for me—but it was so worth the wait here. There’s a little drama after that, but it doesn’t last long and I loved the ending!!

Very good but confusing?

I loved this book but it was not what I was expecting, and therefore confusing, based on what was revealed about Antony at the end of Mal & Jolie’s book. At the end of book 1 in this series at Mal & Jolie’s wedding, Mal was very grateful that Antony had agreed to be his best man as weddings were hard for Antony - Antony had said it was hard to enjoy them when he’d hurt/broken the heart of the woman he loved.
Based on that I was expecting this to be a second chance romance between Antony and that woman. When it clearly wasn’t I was waiting and waiting during the book for him to reveal this past info about himself and the who what where when stuff…except it never happened. In fact, based on this book, Antony’s never been in love or had a truly serious relationship before…so can’t say I was thrilled about the lack of continuity for his character/backstory.
That said, had that not been mentioned in book 1 as part of his story set up I would have zero complaints about this book! :)

Let's be real here, h is 25 or 27 I don't really remember, and H is 35 and they adopt a 16 year old when they're themselves trying to figure out their lives?

Why? Just why would you do that? Figure out and sort out your lives first, you both already have tons of daddy issues and you want to add a 16 yr old boy in the mix?

Atleast get into real relationship, sex isn't the only relationship on which you decide to adopt a grown ass boy.

Also, h was so childish and immature that I felt sorry for H to be stuck with her, from the beginning of the book H wants to taste h's handmade Falaffels and he is a top chef and know how and when to eat and even if he didn't, he won't eat it all hot, so here our h gets angry because according to her, her dish tastes better when eated hot so she throws away the Falaffels from H's hands and stomps on it l. Literally stomps on it, and when dog wanted to eat it, she throws it away in thrash.

Just like what I felt this book was, this one was definitely not for me. 👎

An unusual family of misfits that somehow completes the puzzle!

I’m new to Hailey Shore’s books, but I must say I really enjoyed Can’t Take the Heat! Part of the Calico Cove series, I’ll definitely be reading more.

I'm not sure why her profile is not complete on any of the review sites, but hopefully it gets rectified soon so more people can know about this author.

They say the family that cooks together, stays together, right? Well if ‘they’ don’t I’m saying it now. Antony is a chef with triggers from his abusive father, but a super good guy who has lost his way. Birdie is a food truck chef whose father is a renowned chef in his own right and she has never felt good enough for his approval. And then Nick, a runaway teen with daddy problems of his own that is also handy with a knife.

So much dysfunction and yet they fit together and heal together when they become a family. Have a read and get hooked into this series. I have!

— You look like a guy who got laid last night.
— You sound like a woman who screamed my name last night.

This is an ARC review!
Can’t Take The Heat!? releases April 20th 🖤

We’re back at Calico Cove!
This time we meet Birdie: she drives a food truck around the country, she’s a free spirit through and through, just go with the flow (all because her daddy issues). And Antony’s a famous chef that it’s hiding from a scandal.
Their paths collided when Nick, a teen runaway, arrives at Calico Cove and makes both of them remember too much about themselves.

The high point of this story to me it’s Antony’s healing process. I loved everything about it, his “fishing therapy sessions” and all. We can easily relates with his feelings.
However I couldn’t emphatize so much with Birdie’s drama, sometimes she sounded like a silly woman needing to heal her inner child and hurting everybody on the way. But I loved Birdie is Madame Za’s niece, it’s such special detail.

The dynamic between this couple was both fun and fire! I enjoyed very much their slow burn relationship. Antony has such a delicious dirty mouth, I appreciated that very much.
Nick’s situation brought depth to this story, and through this we could know Antony and Birdie better.

But sorry A❤️B but all I can think about is that my precious kleptobaby’s back! ❤️ I missed Nora so much, I can’t stand with her being so attached to Nick, such a perfect friendship. Roy and Ness presence made me happy.

This book is part of Calico Cove series but you can read it separately.

I was given an ARC of this book to review:

This was a slow burn romance, so slow that the consummation of the relationship wasn’t until 85% of the book was finished. But when the romance did start, it was spicy, like I like it! This book started with Birdie running away from her life and ending up in calico cove and Antony ending up doing the same a short while later. They both are running from their daddy issues and have to work through them throughout the book. They start as dislike but move to friends and eventually lovers. They soon find they have being teen runaways in common when a teen runaway shows up in calico cove and they have to work together to help him. This book has found family and home tropes and a happily ever after of course.

OMG! I loved this story. The back and forth between Birdie the food truck chef who ran away to Calico Cove where her aunt lives after an argument with her father and Anthony a three michelan star, James Beard award winning chef who escaped to the Cove to clear his head after a video of him losing his cool in the kitchen went viral. The flirty public banter throughout the book kept me entertained and enjoying the story line. Also the the other characters in the story are interesting too. Especially the banter between the park ranger and the actress I have a feeling I'm going to love their story too. I'm going to go back and read Hailey's other books.

I received an ARC and volunteered to leave a review.

This is the latest story set in the town of Calico Cove and features a character who may be familiar if you've read book 1 (Happily Ever Maybe?). This time, chef Antony is in town after a video of him in his restaurant went viral. Cooking shows are everywhere at the moment and this provided a spin on that. Honestly, the interaction between Antony and Birdie was fun and light, but also covered some heavier emotional topics. I loved the addition of interesting side characters such as Madam Za and Nick provided. I would have liked more interaction with Birdie and her father - I felt that was a bit rushed.
Overall though, I continue to enjoy this series and can highly recommend this book.

Title: Can’t Take the Heat
Author: Hailey Shore
Hero/Heroine: Antony & Birdie
Tropes: Enemies to Lovers, Age Gap, Small Town, Found Family,

tw/cw: abusive parental relationship, homelessness, dysfunctional familial relationship,

A continuation of the Calico Cove series, Can’t Take the Heat was an enjoyable story about a food truck owner and a famous chef, feuding over falafel. Yes, you read that right.
This was a fast paced read with some lovely characters, I loved the found family aspect with Antony, Birdie and Nick, their relationship was heartwarming and brought a smile to my face.

Loved!

This one was so much fun!

Antony “Tony” Reynard and Genevieve “Birdie” Monet made such a beautiful couple. She helped him see that the epic control he was holding onto so desperately was weighing him down, and he helped her see that having a little bit of control over your life and emotions isn’t such a bad thing ❤️

I love how they found Nick and both of them understood his circumstances in different ways.
Both had run away from emotionally troubled homes with Tony’s being physically troubled as well. They each put their stamp of love on Nick and brought him home 🥰🥰

Can’t Take the Heat is a small town, enemies to lovers, slow burn romance. Birdie and Antony are both chefs at different points in their careers, and both are trying to get away from things in their personal life which leads them to Calico Cove. Throw in a similar history when it comes to dealing with their fathers, this not only connects Birdie and Anthony, but helps them to connect with Nick and what he is going through when he comes to town.
For me, it was slow to get into. However, the steam scenes were worth the slow crescendo into the book.

I've honestly loved each Calico Cove story I've read, and I was hella excited when I realized this book was about Chef Antony (he made a brief appearance in Happily Ever... Maybe?), the lovely young Birdie and the hilarious antagonistic interactions that happen whenever they're in the same place at the same time. The disdain and dislike was strong with them, but things aren't as they always appear on the surface, and I loved seeing the evolution of their enemies-to-something more romantic as it progressed.

I always love small-town reads and love visiting Calico Cove again. Birdie and Anthony have amazing banter and the games they play with one another are hilarious. I didn't know that a conversation about falafel could be so entertaining. This was a great quick fun weekend read.

I have to say that while I loved their banter and semi-feud, I was very disappointed with the amount of graphic sex scenes that seemed to me rather pointless and just because to have them is a trend. Without them, or rather with a lesser amount of the it would be a great book with perfect balance between trauma from father issues, fun from the battle between Antony and Birdie and sweet romance. Ah, well....

Started well

This one started well, I enjoyed the back and forth between Birdie and Tony, and the way they came together to help Nick. I found it disingenuous that her father was allowed to judge a competition that she was invited to be a part of---whether he showed favoritism or not, it would have reeked of nepotism and not been allowed. I did like that it wasn't "love solves everything", and that Tony and Nick both got therapy., although I think Birdie needed it too.
