Medvedev Bratva #1

Devil from Moscow

Rate this book
I never expected to fall for a devil.

Nina:
You know the story where the hero comes in and saves the day, rescuing the heroine right in the nick of time?
This isn’t that story.
Instead of a knight in shining armor, he’s a sexy, tatted-up Bratva boss with a reputation for being brutal and fierce.
Vasily finds me after I’ve already been brought to my lowest—broken by cruel men until I barely recognize myself.
He doesn’t offer me salvation.
He offers me protection and revenge.
And I gladly take it.
Because I don’t need a knight in shining armor.
I need a villain who doesn’t mind getting his hands dirty, a man who will make those bastards pay for what they did to me.
I never expected to fall for the devil with blood on his hands.
I never expected to crave the comfort of his powerful body.
But our arrangement quickly turns into something more as he teaches me what real pleasure feels like, and soon I’m addicted.

Vasily:
When I first saw her, she was broken, alone, scared.
I couldn’t leave her, so I did the only thing I could do.
I claimed her as my own and gave her the protection of my name.
She knows who I am, knows my reputation and the bloody stories they tell about me.
But she’s not the one who needs to fear me.
It’s all the men that hurt her who need to be scared.
Because I’m coming for them.
One by one I’m going to take down every single person who dared to hurt what’s mine.
Because Nina is mine.
She was mine the second she wrapped her arms around me and begged me for help, and I’m never letting her go.

WARNING: This is a very steamy dark Bratva romance, and it does contain triggering content. Please see warning at beginning of novel and read responsibly.

This is the first book in the Medvedev Bratva series, an interconnected series that can be read as standalones, but it’s more enjoyable if you read them in order. No cliffhangers, no cheating, and an HEA is always guaranteed!

I struggled with this, I think it's because of how he was made to be the devil and dark but all we got from him was the completely opposite? I wanted to be unhinged and cold despite the kindness he showed her when he saved her. Idk. I also could not stand behind her decision to let her parents live knowing what they did and how seriously they did not care.

NOW I will say Vasily was perfect in his kindness and understanding. It just got too repetitive after a while.

Nina is SOLD BY HER PARENTS to pay for her father’s huge debt, she is sold into human trafficking where she is raped repeatably for over 10 days. She violently loses her virginity to a mystery man with a ski mask and is locked away by the owner Ruby. Ruby also informs her that her Nina's dad frequents the place and uses the women too which is where one of his debts comes in.

I am absolutely disgusted by the fact her mother and father KNEW what they were selling her to and were never distraught over it and even when she is saved, they want her to go back. They should have died and not left to their own devices.

Vasily shows up at Ruby to look for a man who owes him money and runs into Nina who was just brutally raped and in order to save her he quickly announces she is to be his wife and tells Ruby to fuck off and takes her out of there. Vasily is the leader of the Bratva and places Nina under his protection by marrying her that night.

Of course, Nina is experiencing intense trauma over everything that happened to her but Vasily being patient and kind lets her deal with everything while standing by her side. He lets her view images of men who frequented the place and creates a list of the ones who raped her and goes off to kill them one by one.

The mysterious ski mask guy who bought her virginity and raped her constantly? Well, he is Colin the Irish mob boss who Vasily knew. Was I shocked? Nope. Who else was there in this story to be the mystery asshole? I knew it was him very early on.

I skimmed a lot of this book and I wish it had been easier to get through especially since it's less than 300 pages which normally takes me a day to finish.

How can this be dark and sickeningly sweet at the same time? Please check the trigger warnings in this book.

Nina (22) was sent as collateral by her father to pay for his debts. Her parents knew what would happen to her, yet those sick fucks lied and still sent her to that horrible place. She was a v-card holder and was auctioned to the highest bidder. She was brutally assaulted on page and every day for 10 days in that club.

Then one day, Vasily (32) was looking for a man in that club, and he saw Nina. She begged him to help her, and he did. He dragged her out of that place and told the manager that he's going to marry her, which means she's under his protection. Of course, the witch manager threw a hissy fit because Nina's a great asset, but she couldn't do anything.

Vasily married Nina that same night, but it was only to protect her at the beginning. But as days passed and Nina saw that Vasily really cared for her, she slowly let her guard down and accepted his protective and sweet side.

This has dark themes, obviously, and most of the story focuses on finding and killing all those men who raped Nina. She pointed them out, and Vasily listed their names, ticking off each one as soon as he killed them. It was satisfying for me; they deserve it, and I'm not even sorry for those men. And the last man on the list is someone I guessed correctly. I enjoyed reading how he died in a very slow and painful way. 😈

Despite being a dark romance, this is also a freaking cheesefest. They dropped the love bomb at around 51%, and their lines, gooosh, they're cringey at times for being disgustingly sweet, yet I'm here for all of it. There are a lot of "I love yous" thrown in this one, and I actually enjoyed it. Vasily is ruthless and merciless, hence the nickname "Devil from Moscow" but he was a golden retriever/cinnamon roll when it comes to Nina. The attention, care, and love of this guy for his wife made me swoon over him. Vasily's patience with helping Nina move on from what happened to her was so adorable. He never once pushed her, and he always puts her first over his needs. Maaaan, I swear this guy is out of this world.

However, I still feel that this story could still be better. The exchanging of love bombs got repetitive along the way, and it felt so flat at some point. Maybe I needed him to be more ruthless towards those fuckers who hurt Nina, not that he isn't. But I hoped for more brutal ways to end their miserable lives because I couldn't get past what happened to her. I'm angry for what she went through. I wanted those men to suffer so much, and her parents didn't suffer at all!!! Nina's way too good of a person because she only cut them off from her life after what they did to her. Vasily offered to kill her father, but she stopped him from doing so. I hate it that they got away from what they put her through so quickly and easily; it isn't fair!

Anyway, this is still a good read, and I enjoyed it.

Story: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Trope: heroine in peril
Angst: 😱😱
Smexy: 🔥🔥

Cute story. The hero is a bit too sweet and understanding with the heroine for me, but was a quick, enjoyable read.

It was the combination of the parents being so cruel, what they did to her and what happened to her.

There's a line for me, apparently, and this one crossed it.

Oh lord, this was bad. The virginal heroine gets sold into the sex trade to work off her father's debt. After ten days of rape, she's saved by a Russian mobster boss by marriage. Through marriage to him, she gets protection and he destroys all of the men who raped her. She's (obviously) traumatised from the abuse but it doesn't take long for her to have the moves of a porn actress virgin. Around 50% (the book has about 250 pages) there are declarations of love and it's beyond cringe-worthy and cheesy. And that's from someone who LOVES kitschy romances (occasionally). The hero is supposed this badass bratva boss but he behaves more like someone on a visit to an English tea party. Just because he likes cutting out someone's tongue doesn't mean he is this dark brooding hero. In regards to the heroine, he's worse than a beta hero. At least in my book. Also, this whole plot surrounding the guy who took the heroine's virginity while wearing a ski mask. It was the head of the Irish mob who rules the other part of the city, has three children and a mistress. I found it really really, really hard to believe that he - who willingly shares the city with the Russians!!!, who is the head of the Irish mafia, behaves so stupidly to be caught so easily and doesn't have protection in place for his family.

Vasily Medvedev is a powerful, dangerous, and lethal bratva boss with the nickname of being the devil. He’s cruel and violent. Definitely a villain anti-hero and not a white knight. Nina is young, sheltered, inexperienced, and intelligent paying for the sins of her father. She’s being held captive in a brothel where she suffers through significant trauma after multiple assaults. Her spirit has been utterly broken and it will take a very special villain to piece her back together again.

My heart broke for Nina. I had to take a couple of breaks at the beginning of the book because I was raging about what she had to endure. I sighed with such relief when Vasily showed up and didn’t turn his back on the helpless broken girl standing before him. He may be a bad man, but he’s 100% the kind of man I would want to rescue me from the same fate. He is so gentle, patient, and understanding with Nina. He gives her his protection and treats her like a queen. He knows she’s fragile and is absolutely swoon-worthy with Nina. I loved that the reader got to experience healing right along with Nina and nothing was rushed. Their connection felt so genuine and I was definitely rooting for them to connect on a deeper level. Vasily is perfection and he gives Nina everything she could ever want or need. I’m definitely a sucker for the most ruthless and cruel man being a total softy with his girl. One of my favorite tropes!

As always, this author has done a stellar job and I’m so excited for this series! I have read all of her other books and they are all 5 star reads!

Tropes: Mafia romance, dark romance, anti-hero, villain gets the girl, virgin heroine, revenge, happily-ever-after
Heat: 3/5
TW: This book is a darker read than this author typically publishes. Please check content warnings. There is SA, violence, gore, death, trauma, trafficking, etc.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Beni sinir edecek hiçbir şey yoktu her şey yerli yerindeydi.

Seriye devam edicem karakterleri merak ediyorum. Yazarın kalemini sevdim umarım diğer kitapları da iyidir.

3.5* Yes there are a lot of mistakes, yes there’s loads of sex, but I still loved it.

If you’ve seen my other reviews of this author, you’ll know that I get slightly annoyed with her. As her books are all the same. Woman who is younger than man by about ten years. ☑️ Woman who has no friends. ☑️ Woman who has no hobbies. ☑️ Lots and lots of sex ☑️ This one started off brilliantly, went off the boil halfway through and then got good again.

When Nina’s dad has gambling debts with the mafia, he sells his daughter to a brothel to pay them off. Nina endures hell as she’s a virgin who has never really done anything, and is really innocent. Vasya is at the brothel looking for someone. When he sees Nina and she begs him for help, he can’t refuse her. The only way that he can protect her fully, (For some bizarre reason.) is Nina to be his wife. Vasya is so incredibly sweet with Nina. As the head of the bratva he has a nickname of the ‘devil from Moscow’. As he’s known for being brutal, yet with Nina he’s the complete opposite.

I loved how Vasya is willing to let Nina dictate the speed of their sex life. At first she can’t even bear to kiss him. I really wish that he had got Nina a counsellor though. As she went through something so brutal that she needs help to cope with it. Also Nina would have had nightmares, and other issues from her time at the brothel. She wouldn’t just ‘get over it’ as she did.

I did love this book but, it’s got a huge amount of mistakes. Spelling mistakes, missing speech marks, so it’s hard to figure out if they’re speaking. One of his brothers has got two names and the author flitted between the two, which was really confusing. Then there’s the endless sex scenes. Wow this author must really really love writing them.

The reason I get slightly annoyed, is because the books could be brilliant, and should be brilliant.

This was cute! I’m in my mafia villain era and this checked off all the marks. First of all heed the trigger warnings, the first few chapters are rough, but necessary for the story. Lots of violence and assault on page. Second of all, Ruslan is my boy forever. Vasya is this cold, calculating, walking menace to society who doesn’t seem to see that in a few seconds Nina is going to run into his very meticulous plan and throw it right out the window. A girl needs a hero when the game is rigged and she can’t save herself. Vasya is the evil villain needed for the job, knight in shiny armor need not apply. But we love a morally gray character that will burn the world for us, and burn does Vasya do, much like Santa he has a list and is checking it twice! So really this is a Christmas story! Happy reading!!!

I actually really enjoyed this book!! I’m not sure if I’ve read this author before but I liked both the writing and the story.

I absolutely loved Vasily. He was not what I was expecting. He’s an absolute marshmallow to Nina and only Nina. He was soo damn sweet with her and took such good care of her. He was patient and understanding of how badly she was hurt. There wasn’t OW drama because he would not allow there to be OW drama. He simply wouldn’t tolerate anyone disrespecting Nina or letting Nina think any other woman had a chance. They tried to cause drama but he put a stop to it real quick. And the way he went on a killing spree for his wife??!! Ahh I loved him!!

Nina was very sweet. I actually really liked her character. I felt for her and what she went through. I like that she wasn’t annoying and needed to know what he was doing when he was working. She understood she wouldn’t be able to know everything. She absolutely needed someone like Vasily to come into their life. I feel like they were good together.

I loved the secondary characters as well!! The only thing was I was getting tired of Ilya bringing women home. It got old after the 3rd one.

If I’m being honest the lost star was for the amount of sex scenes. You would think since she was so brutally abused there wouldn’t be as much sex in a book but you’d be wrong. As soon as they were intimate that first time it was BAM..sex fest! The last like 40% of the book is where all the sex scenes are so it’s like one every chapter and so I skimmed those after the third one. (After going through my reviews I noticed I had read another book by this author and I also commented on the number of sex scenes as well lol but I did give it 5 stars so..)

Other than that this was a good one! I’m definitely reading the rest of the series.

Also check the trigger warnings because poor Nina!

A ver me explico.

❌Ow drama- maybe a random woman looking at him but otherwise none . When they looked at him she got jealous.
❌Cheating
❌Sharing

I saw the villain twist coming long before it happened but I still enjoyed watching the bad guy get ☠️.
The hero is scary to others. He does things like take people’s tongues if they insult his woman. But he is sugary sweet and a huge gooey cinnamon roll for the heroine. Their love is epic and all consuming. There is no resistance or either of them pushing the other away.

She’s traumatized and he treats her like she’s precious and fragile and tbh there were times he’s was so sweet my teeth hurt. But only to her. It was a nice refreshing change of pace. There was tons do spice once they got past her trauma.

I really liked their makeshift family. His brothers , his two closest men, and two employees that cooked and cleaned in the house made the family dynamic. It gave the heroine the family she needed to overcome her trauma.

This was a new author to me so thank you for reccing her! I can’t wait to read the brother’s stories.

DNF @71%
I honestly just had to quit after Nina compared herself to Vasily’s past women for the MILLIONTH TIME!!! Omg that was literally so annoying and just cringey since he has told her about a billion plus times that he is in love with her and no one can compare. Also I feel like there is definitely a trauma bond that formed between them and not so much a real relationship. Idk I just feel like a lot of what happened in this book was fully surrounded around her having sec with him and one they finally did it was smut like every single chapter. Don’t get me wrong I love me some good spicy scenes, but when their relationship isn’t really even fully developed and they are already taking the next step and telling eachother they love them it’s a problem. I feel like she went through a terribly traumatic experience and was so focused on pleasing him that she ended up having sec with him like maybe a couple weeks after she was rescued. Idk that just doesn’t sit well with me and I was honestly just so annoyed how she kept bringing up his past hookups when he never mentioned them once. This book was just cringey and I wish I would have stopped sooner.

2-2.5 ⭐️

Honestly this book had alot of potential…it jus lacked in so many ways. I DNF at 30% bc it was a little too insta-love for me. The heroine was very doormat and i couldnt see her getting any character development and farther on in the book. The male main character had a little character traits that i loved…jus not enough to finish the story. It was so insta-love that the male main character like literally fell head over heels when he heard her giggle…on page 193…in a 635 page story. I kinda gagged but its wtv. Honestly if ur into insta-love then this is ur cup of tea. But unfortunately it wasnt mine, the female main character lacked alot of feisty-ness that i expected from her, and automatically liked the male main character after knowing him for 2 days… Might be just because i like when their is a love/hate relationship between the chracters that i jus didnt like this book.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 Sinfully Dark, Dangerously Sweet Stars! 😈💋🔥

OMG 😭💔💥 where do I even begin with Devil from Moscow by Sonja Grey?! This book wrecked me, healed me, and made me blush all at the same time! 😅 I went through every emotion possible: rage, heartbreak, swooning, gasping, and that little “🥺” face that comes out when a brutal mafia boss turns into the softest cinnamon roll for his girl. 🥹💞

💃 The Story

Nina… sweet, innocent, intelligent Nina. She’s just living her normal life in college when her world literally gets ripped out from under her. Her parents (the absolute WORST 😡) pull her out of school and sell her off to pay for her father’s debts. And no, not “sell” in a romanticised way, they sell her. To monsters. The first few chapters are painful to read , it’s dark, gritty, and gut-wrenching. Sonja Grey doesn’t shy away from the horror of what Nina endures, and I had to pause more than once to yell at my Kindle and threaten fictional characters. 😤💢

And then… enters him.

😈 Vasily Medvedev — The Devil from Moscow 👑🔥🐾

Oh. My. God. Vasily.
Ten seconds into meeting him and I was like: “Yep. I see why they call him the Devil. And also why I’d let him ruin my life.” 😂
He’s lethal, ruthless, and terrifying to literally everyone except Nina. For her, he’s patient, protective, and unbelievably tender. Watching this giant, blood-soaked Bratva boss gently coax a traumatised girl back to life?? MY HEART. 💘

And don’t even get me started on how he talks to her 😭 soft, respectful, never pushing her beyond what she can handle. He’s the kind of villain who kills men without blinking but melts into a puddle when Nina looks at him. I live for this “monster to everyone but her” energy. 😭🔥

🐕 Also, shoutout to Ruslan, the Tibetan mastiff!

Best dog ever. 15/10 would protect Nina and deserve all the treats. 🐶💖

❤️ The Romance

Their relationship is a slow, careful rebuild. Nothing is rushed. Sonja takes her time showing Nina’s healing, her tentative trust, and her growing love for Vasily. It’s beautiful and earned. By the time they finally connect physically, it’s not just hot (and it IS 🔥🔥🔥), it’s emotional, healing, and powerful. You feel every bit of it.

What I loved most? NO unnecessary drama. No “third-act breakup,” no stupid miscommunications. Just two broken people choosing to love each other through the chaos. 🥰

⚖️ The Tone

This book balances darkness and hope so well. It’s violent, brutal, and raw, but it’s also a story of survival, healing, and love that grows from ashes. One minute I was crying 😭, the next I was giggling because Vasily was being possessive in the cutest way (“Mine” has never sounded so romantic 💀❤️).

🔥 The Heat Level

3/5 on the spice-o-meter 🌶️🌶️🌶️ but it’s not about quantity; it’s about intensity. Every scene is filled with emotion and trust. And when Vasily finally lets go of his restraint? Whew 😳… someone please open a window.

💀 The Vengeance

Oh, the revenge arc?? Chef’s kiss. 👌
Every single person who hurt Nina gets what’s coming to them, and it’s so satisfying. Vasily makes sure of it , with his signature brand of poetic violence. 😏

💬 Favourite Vibe Summary:

“I don’t need a knight in shining armour. I need a devil who loves me enough to burn the world down.” 🖤🔥

🎬 Final Thoughts

If you love:

Dark mafia romances 🖤

Antiheroes who worship their women 💋

Broken heroines who rebuild their strength 💪

Found family with loyal brothers

A dog that deserves his own novella 🐕

…then Devil from Moscow will absolutely own your soul.

It’s dark, it’s healing, it’s romantic, and it’s dangerously addictive. Sonja Grey gave us a villain who became a savior and a heroine who rose from her ashes.

I closed the book with tears in my eyes and a goofy smile on my face. 🥹💖
Now excuse me while I go reread all my favourite Vasily-and-Nina moments

Nina (22) starts out by getting pulled out of college by her father. He is expecting her to work off his debt. But he lied to her, and she's basically been sold. Vasily (32) just came into the country from Russia, with his Tibetan mastiff. His Bratva owns the North part of the city, while the Irish own the South. The middle part between the two territories is where Nina was sold into. The first night is brutal, and the next week and a half aren't any better. Then the same guy from the first night comes back for her and leaves her bleeding. Vasily shows up and rescues her. That scene was wild, and it gets more so after. This is all just within the first 3 chapters. The rest is just as wild.
The love building between these two was amazing to watch. I really got into reading and didn't realize how much time had passed. This book just sucks you in. The betrayal was coming. We all see it. But who it was just might surprise you.

There were one or two typos (here instead of hear). But ever with that, I just really enjoyed the book. Normally, I wouldn't 5 star a book with typos, but this book was that well plotted.

The couple: Vasily and Nina

Romance trope: mafia
Series: Medvedev Bratva
Length: 256 pages

Plot: Nina is a 19 year old college student when her father sells her to a brothel to settle up his debts. She thinks she might be stuck there until she dies, but one night Vasily walks in and rescues her. Neither of them expected a hastily arranged marriage, done to stave off a mob war, to turn into the real thing, but soon the two of them are experiencing feelings they hadn't counted on. There are still enemies out there though, and Vasily will do whatever it takes to protect his new bride.

Commentary: Well this was simultaneously sweeter and darker than I expected. A lot of times heroines are rescued before the really bad thing happens, but in this case, the really bad thing does happen to Nina. She meets Vasily afterward and he rescues her. In a lot of darker mafia stories, it's the hero who is he cause of distress, but here, that is also subverted. He is the sweetest hero ever, bad only to others and never to Nina. He loves her almost from the beginning and he never disrespects or upsets her. It was almost to a point where I wondered if there would be any conflict once she was rescued, other than her recovery, of course. But then you have the bad guy (and I did see that coming, but it was still dramatic enough) and that adds to the suspense and drama a little.
If you like mafia stories and Russian heroes, and like a little grit but no bullying or revenge against the heroine, this is a good one for you.

This one surprised me, I went in not expecting much and it was good. I hated what was happening to Nina at the start, loved that with not much more than a moment Vasily stepped in to save Nina and even went to extremes to make sure she was safe after. He could have just given her money and sent her someplace safe, instead he gave her his name and protection and treated her like a treasure. It was fun to watch their relationship evolve to something real and to see how happy both were. I especially liked that Nina is aware and of what Vasily does and is ok with it. You can tell that they are going to be happy, so it was nice to see how things ended for them.

tbf i should have just dnf’d but i fear i needed to know who the bad guy was and it was 8pm so i didn’t want to have to find a new book start…

the sad part it is i loved the concept and really think it could have been great but the writing just wasn’t there. the dialogue felt choppy with very little chemistry. the scene transitions were abrupt often leaving me annoyed at what was just jumped over instead of being fleshed out with good details. and the insta love just didn’t work for the scenario imo

mafia (bratva) | insta love | he protects and saves her | marriage of convenience | kidnapped fmc | forced prostitution | age gap

This was just okay. I expected way more than I got but got less, honestly felt like I was reading this on Wattpad. I loved how Vasily saved Nina after she was trafficked and married her to protect her and I loved how he went after everyone who assaulted her, he was a king for that. But that was really the only part I enjoyed.
