Me recomendaron esta saga hace unos veinticinco años, que se dice pronto. Por fortuna, aquellos siguen siendo mis amigos, y he podido comentar con ellos la lectura un cuarto de siglo después. Me ha parecido una muy buena obra para iniciarse en la fantasía, que es para lo que les sirvió a ellos, y además se deja leer muy bien hoy en día. Bajo la premisa clásica del viaje del héroe, la historia no ofrece nada novedoso pero es lo suficientemente dinámica para ir enganchando con los diferentes escenarios, con el ir y venir de enemigos y aliados, todo hasta llegar a la lucha final contra el nigromante de turno. Con referencias interesantes a los mitos celtas y autores clásicos como Tolkien, lo que más me ha gustado sin embargo es el trato de los personajes femeninos: aunque solo son tres, se acercan mucho al ideal vigente de mujeres fuertes y carismáticas, especialmente Favila, co-protagonista y mi gran favorita. Por contra, lo más flojo del libro es la escasa capacidad del autor para manejarse fuera de las secuencias de acción; aquellas con mayor carga argumental, como el inicio y el epílogo, resultan bastante plomizas. En resumen, las páginas de Doneval han logrado hacerme revivir las sensaciones que experimentaba de chaval cuando leía fantasía épica, y eso es algo que valoro mucho. Parece que esta cápsula del tiempo me deparaba una grata sorpresa.

La editorial Austral ha cumplido setenta y cinco años con el lema «La biblioteca de las obras indispensables», pero los más jóvenes no recordarán la época en la que, entre estos indispensables, también se incluía la narrativa juvenil. Mientras que cada vez hay más editoriales que apuestan por ella, Austral abandonó la colección en los ochenta, aunque algunos títulos todavía suenan en la cabeza de los más nostálgicos.

Uno de ellos es Doneval, del inglés Graham Dunstan Martin. Hace años que desapareció de las librerías, pero su recuerdo permanece entre toda una generación de los amantes de la novela fantástica juvenil. Con precedentes como Las crónicas de Narnia de C. S. Lewis o El señor de los anillos de J. R. R. Tolkien, Doneval recrea su propio universo de fantasía épica, aunque en un mundo mucho menor, donde cada parada del viaje es un desafío a la magia y un peligro para nuestro protagonista.

I remembered loving this book as a child. Rereading it, its magic and richness are much simpler things than the adult-oriented fantasies I read nowadays, but the kernels are there. It's a traditional quest with fantastic encounters along the way, a great chapter devoted to a cerebral "disposition on sorcery," and even some nifty otherworldliness. I think it's gonna be a treat for my favorite kid.

I would definitely say this book is worth reading. In some ways, it is so simple, and in others, it isn't at all. I found it while browsing aimlessly at the library, and I greatly enjoyed it.

Ewan is a simple peasant boy, living in a drought-ridden kingdom. Someone pushes him into a well, and when he shows up in the city sopping wet in the middle of a drought, he is labeled as a child of prophecy. Things only get more interesting from there.

Lo leí hace más de veinte años por primera vez y fue mi introducción, sin yo saberlo, a la fantasía antes de los clásicos. Y yo, aficionado a sobredimensionar y exagerar, creo que es una de esas historias iniciáticas que solo la casualidad no ha dejado auparse al trono de las grandes sagas. Doneval tiene una de esas historias que engancha por lo sencillo, lo rápido que ocurre todo y a la vez lo natural que es. Es como hacer amigos cuando eres niño, sin darte cuenta ya ha pasado. La historia es clásica: un héroe improbable va superando las pruebas que la propia trama le pone como esperadas, y también las inesperadas, dentro de un rico mundo en el que hay más matices de gris que los que el villano de la historia o el nombre del reino de Oscuria nos pueden traer a la mente.

ESte libro fue uno de los primeros de fantasía que leí y me envolvió en un mundo mágico, místico y misterioso. De pequeña quedé atrapada en el mundo de Doneval, recuerdo mucho los laberintos que aparecían ahí. Me encantaría volver a leerlo ahora, años después.

I was a pretty voracious reader when I was a kid. When I was in first grade, I wandered through the older kids’ section of the school library and picked up this book called Giftwish. The cover had a silvery dragon, a woman in a fiery scarlet robe, and a boy with a twisting sword. What’s not for a six-year-old to like? I took it home and read it right through.

I didn’t get it. It was far above my level. Miffed and disappointed, I returned it to the library and went back to Beezus and Ramona and The Babysitter's Club 1-26.

But something stuck with me. As confused as I was, I couldn’t forget about the enchanting dragon, complex characters, and creative magical artifacts. Two years later, I picked it up again.

Once more, bewilderment. I could understand the language, but I felt like I was missing something. I still finished it, so I must have liked something about, but I was left dissatisfied.

Two years more and I was back. I had switched schools by that point, but my mom taught first grade at my old school so I had reason to snoop about. I returned to the library and took Giftwish off the shelf. The dragon winked at me. Mystical memories teased my brain. I checked it out. Maybe third time’s a charm…

A-ma-zing.

Either I was a dim as a child or I had to wait for the right moment in my life. I loved this book. The storyline is dark and compelling, a simple quest told from a brand new angle. The main character Ewan is a bright peasant well out of his league. He doesn’t transform into a Hercules-like hero (how many times have we seen that before?) but gradually figures out his world, flirts with death more than once, and with true resourcefulness learns to master magical objects and creatures. His main companion is Catchfire the witch, and many other colorful characters dot the pages.

The most impressive part of this book is the logic of the fantastical world. Think of Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn series. Burning different metals enables the characters to accomplish certain feats, one feat for each metal and that’s it. Similarly, Giftwish creates rules around prophecy, magic, and passage between worlds that adds a delightful authenticity to his novel.

Here’s an example. Ewan drives his goats to market. On the way, he puts a sprig of garlic in his hatband, gets tossed into a well, loses a shoe, and gains a black goat. Lo and behold, when he arrives at market, he is told that a wizard gave a prophecy about a boy with garlic in his hat, sopping wet, one-shoed, and with one black goat in his white herd, who will fulfill an astounding destiny. But Martin plays with this idea by questioning the causality of the prophecy. Was Ewan set up by a desperate mayor who needed a scapegoat to get a wizard off his back? Or was Ewan the destined hero all along and the prophecy was designed so that the foolish mayor would pick him out? This type of play happens again and again, twisting magic back on itself rather than taking it for granted. The novel has almost a philosophical air to it, even though it was action-packed, entertaining, and sometimes frightening.

Though nostalgia plays a factor, I still love this book today. I even borrowed it permanently when my elementary school moved buildings. My only regret in taking it is that it’s relatively rare, as I found out later, and no curious child will stumble upon it while it’s in my bookcase.

So I send the word out to Goodreads: if you find this book (in a library, in a used book store, or on some nostalgic reader's shelf), please, please give it a try. Just tell your first-grader to wait a few years.

Un jeune paysan venu vendre ses chèvres au marché apprend qu'il a été désigné pour retrouver la formule magique capable de protéger le royaume contre le pouvoir du mal. Il devra affronter maints dangers et créatures étranges dans une quête qui s'annonce très difficile. A priori, une histoire ordinaire de Fantasy, mais il s'agit de l'un de mes tout premiers coups de cœur littéraires ! Je trouve cette histoire passionnante, fort bien écrite, et si l'auteur n'évite pas certains poncifs du genre, il sait également faire preuve d'une grande intelligence dans sa manière d'appréhender la magie (notamment par la place accordée au pouvoir des mots) ou de rendre hommage aux grands classiques du genre.
Un livre que je considère comme absolument culte et qui est pourtant quasiment inconnu en France...🙁 Il y a eu deux tomes publiés en Angleterre : le premier s’intitule Giftwish, le second Catchfire. Mais seule la première partie a été traduite en français, sous le titre l’épée magique, publiée sous forme de deux volumes chez Casterman dans le courant des années 1980. Pour la suite, il n’y a donc que la VO, mais c’est très abordable !
Tolkien et ce livre ont été les deux éléments qui m'ont fait aimer la Fantasy.

Doneval es sólo un muchacho, un simple jovencillo en un mundo medieval ficticio que no por ello deja de ser, en cierta forma, cercano al real. A este chico un buen día le ocurre algo ligeramente peculiar; sin que él lo sospeche tras esta “coincidencia” está por descubrir que a veces un sencillo incidente es el comienzo de una cadena de sucesos en que la normalidad se ve interrumpida y lo impensado se presenta.
Esta combinación de magia y realidad es quizás lo que más me agradó de esta novela; es una característica tangible tanto en lo humano de los personajes como en lo fantástico de los escenarios que encierran las aventuras de este libro, cautivando la mente de todo lector que disfruta las novelas que lo llevan más allá de los horizontes impuestos por el tiempo y lo material.
Recomendado a todos los que conocen y gustan de: “El Señor de los Anillos”, “Las Crónicas de Prydain”, “Las Crónicas de Narnia”….

Hoy en día, hay tantos libros, tantas historias y tanta imaginación que es difícil mantenerse en las librerías a la vista de las nuevas generaciones. Por esto dedico una pequeña reseña a Doneval, para que no sea olvidado y tenga nuevos lectores.
Ha envejecido, pero no ha perdido su encanto. Tiene su originalidad, sus clichés de fantasía agradables de leer y se siente la aventura. Me he divertido y me ha gustado lo suficiente para querer recordarlo.
Este libro era de mi padre y agradezco que lo conservara en sus estanterías con la esperanza de que yo lo leyera algún día. Esta es la magia de la literatura, de las bibliotecas y de las buenas historias.

For one thing, I could definitely tell that this book was written in the seventies. The author had a tendency to skip the action and then have a character tell about it later, which was a little annoying. The characters and the narrator were often very long-winded, as well. I did like the depiction of magic through language and all that, but the rest of it was very cliche and dry. Even though this was a fantasy, my favorite genre, I had a very hard time maintaining interest.

Leí este libro como recomendación y me gustó mucho. A pesar de ser una historia clásica de fantasía juvenil, logra mantener tu interés por la aventura hasta el final. Tiene magia, fantasía y algunos giros de guion que ya quisieran muchas novelas más actuales. Me parece un básico para adentrarse en la fantasía medieval más pura, a cualquier edad, aunque sin duda a los lectores más jóvenes les va a fascinar Doneval.

Novela entre infantil y juvenil que mezcla de maravilla una historia arquetípica con detalles muy interesantes sobre la verdad y la simulación, la necesidad de contrarios y como lo que finges puede ser realidad. De niño preadolescente me encantó y siempre me quedé con ganas de leer la segunda parte.

Tenía expectativas pero es en muchos puntos una mala copia del Señor de los anillos. Me aburrí, no se acababa y cuando había algo interesante, ¡cabumm!! Aparecía el copy paste de los libros de Tolkien.
Es para pasar el rato, si no has leído a Tolkien y quieres aventuras quizá te agrade.
