In this uplifting inspirational romance series, award-winning author Amy Lillard unites a “Widows Club” of women who share solace, friendship, faith—and mouthwatering Whoopie Pies—in the Amish community of Paradise Valley, Missouri. Will appeal to fans of Charlotte Hubbard, Molly Jebber, Susan Lantz Simpson, and Kelly Long.
Hattie Schrock’s lively optimism makes her the Widows Club’s most outgoing member. The circle has helped her through widowhood—and in building a thriving popcorn shop with her cousin. But what can she do when she finds Christian Beachy is far more complicated—and appealing—than she thought?
Christian lives his faith through hard work, supporting his overbearing sister, and growing the Valley’s best vegetables. After all, a good Amish man should be dedicated to duty. Yet suddenly, Hattie’s warm-hearted attentions and knack for unexpected adventures is showing him life can be so much more—especially if Hattie can share it with him. But when he discovers her wager, can she and the Widows Club ever convince him that her growing love is the real thing—and that risking together forever will be the sweetest, most fulfilling chance of all?
“Readers will delight in this sweet love story and stay hungry for the next installment.”– Publishers Weekly on Marry Me, Millie
I'm a wife, mother, and bona fide Southern belle. Published author, expert corn bread maker, and Squirrel Princess.
I live in Tulsa, though I was born in Mississippi. I moved to the Sooner State when I was seventeen and met my soul mate and best friend not long after. I've retained a little of my Mississippi accent though most people think I'm from Texas. (?) Rob and I have been married for over twenty years and have a son--a mom proclaimed prodigy, of course!
I love homemade tacos, nail polish, and romance novels--not necessarily in that order. I'm a big fan of country music, a staunch proponent of saving the Oxford comma, and I'm shamefully obsessed with all things Harry Potter.
I believe that God is love. I guess that's why I adore romances.
I have always been intrigued with the Amish culture, their gentle ways and slower-paced lifestyle. (And I love, love, love the fact that they stay married for their lifetime.) But until recently I never thought to blend this interest with my penchant for romance. Okay, okay, I'm a bit old-fashioned and even enjoy the gender roles that are present in this culture. I love to cook and take care of my family. Yes, that's me June Cleaver with a laptop.
I dislike people trying to convince me to read the Twlight series (I'll get to it or I won't, either way I'm good with it), gratuitous violence, and strawberry ice cream. (I know I'm alone on this last one, and again, I'm good with it.)
Favorite movies--(besides HP) French Kiss, Maid of Honor, A Lot Like Love, Just Married, and Sweet Home Alabama. Oh, and Miss Congeniality, Sabrina (both versions) and a 1940's movie called Dear Ruth. If you haven't seen it, you should! A-dorable. Anything with Doris Day and most all of Marilyn's and Audrey's.
Not only is the cover of this book cute but the story is too. Humorous and at the same time emotional. I loved the easy flow of the story and was immediately drawn into the book. Characters of previous books in the series made their way into this story and some new characters were introduced to readers. I thought the book was unique, entertaining, romantic and kept my interest until the last page. The ending was beautiful . This is one of the best books I’ve read this year and definitely the best in this series.
Hattie Schrock and her cousin Elsie Miller own a pop corn shop in Paradise Valley Missouri. Christian Beachy grows vegetables and has a successful produce business with a wide customer base. The only thing is that Christian never smiles and seems rather grouchy most of the time. Hattie always smiles and seems very happy. Elsie and Hattie wonder what it would take to get Christian to smile. Elsie challenges Hattie to try to change Christian into a smiling positive man. The bet is on between the two cousins and if Hattie succeeds in changing him than Elsie will clean the popcorn vats for one year but if Hattie fails to make Christian smile than she will have to do the task for one year. Hattie needs to spend time with Christian in order to try and influence him with her positive demeanor. What she doesn’t count on is Romance.
I recommend this book to readers of Amish Fiction and to fans of Amy Lillard. When Hattie Finds Love is book four of the Paradise Valley series. I recommend that the books be read in the order they were written in order to get the most out of this story. This book is scheduled to be released on 11/28/23.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book All thoughts and opinions shared here in this review are my own.
When Hattie Finds Love is a delightful addition to the Paradise Valley series set in Missouri in Amish country. Widows Hattie and her cousin Elsie own the Paradise Popcorn shop and live together over the shop. Hattie is always positive and smiling, a happy person. Widower Christian is a local farmer supplying fruits and vegetables around the Valley. He is known as a grump who never smiles. After a little wager with Elsie, Hattie sets out to make Christian smile. The two become friends, only friends they tell each other, but they really like each other and eventually even more. This is such a cute, sweet story of two older people going through awkward steps to spend time together and get to know each other better. It is sure to bring on a smile to your face and a chuckle as these two wonderful grandparents get a second chance at love. I received a copy for the purpose of an honest review. These are my thoughts.
Hattie is determined to make Christian happy once again, but the situations she finds herself in are just hysterical. Plus it seems everyone knows about this secret bet except for Christian! In WHEN HATTIE FINDS LOVE I loved Hattie and Christian, the primary characters, but also fell in love with all of the secondary characters. Every one of them has an important part to play in this heart warming story and even though I wanted to reach in and shake some sense into one or two of them every now and then, they all weaseled their way into my heart. This story is so funny and I found myself giggling out loud many many times. My emotions were all over the place and I was even reaching for the tissues quite a few times. Christian and Hattie are both hiding painful pasts and are afraid of being exposed at any moment. Will they learn to forgive themselves and begin to live again?
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Fresh Fiction. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
The Paradise Valley series by Amy Lillard is one of my favorite Amish series. This is the fourth one in the series and I've read them all. There is just something about the author's books, the characters are fun and realistic, the charming setting makes you want to visit, and the foods all sound so delicious. This one has me carving buttered popcorn, which I'm going to make myself some right now. I enjoy having the character carry over from other books in the series. It's always nice to read about characters we are already familiar with and get an update. This one had a mention of the boy in the wheelchair, and I was glad to see an update on him. Paradise Valley, Missouri continues on as the setting for the Paradise Valley series as we see a return of the ladies from the Whoopie Pie Widows Club. The ladies are widows who help each other through their grieving the loss of a spouse with friendship, spending time together and baking together and great encouragement. Member Hattie is an optimistic person, seemingly always cheerful and when she gets challenged, she meets it head on. Her challenge is to get cankerous Christian Beachy, a widow to smile. Upon further inspection, she thinks this may not have been her smartest move agreeing to the challenge. As their time together increases, will his smiles also start to blossom with her outgoing personality? Looking forward to more heartwarming stories by the author.
November 28,2023 publication date. I was given a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
When Hattie Finds Love ( Paradise Valley #4 ) Amy Lillard When Hattie Finds Love is the Fourth book in the series Paradise Valley. I really loved this story and the main characters are Hattie and Christian. Both are in their older years and both have loved and lost before. Second chances, easy and quick to read, a bet , a grouchy man who never smiles, and an Amish woman who is out going and a member of the Widow’s club. I found myself laughing at these two and cheering them on. A very sweet and clean romance. I was given a complimentary copy of this book by NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
This is a lovely conclusion to the Paradise Valley Series! Author Amy Lillard offers readers humor, hope, and the wonderful reminder that affairs of the heart aren't determined by age. Why shouldn't two older people find friendship, companionship, and even love in their golden years? Just be prepared for your heartstrings to be tugged when Christian discovers Hattie's bet!
If you're longing for a feel-good story about second chances, grab a copy of When Hattie Finds Love. I recommend it to all who enjoy Amish fiction!
I received a complimentary copy from the author. There was no obligation for a positive review.
I received this ARC free from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
I love a good Amish romance. This was a bit different than most I have read. It is about a woman in her widower’s group who makes a bet with her cousin. She bets that Hattie can’t make the widow Christian (who is the community grump) smile.
When Hattie Finds Love was a sweet story about two slightly older main characters, a widow and widower, who found love together when neither one was looking for it.
I really liked Hattie and Christian. They definitely seemed like opposites when the story opened up. And they did have differing personalities and ways of reacting to things. However, they were more alike than anyone would have believed. I thought it was fun that they enjoyed many of the same types of things and that spending time together brought them out of their comfort zones and helped them to see that even though they both had nice lives on their own, it was more fun to spend time together.
This story is part of the Paradise Valley series, yet I think that anyone could jump into this story and enjoy it without any trouble. I really liked this book and seeing these two characters get to know each other more deeply and learn that their hearts were more than simple reflections of a smile or a frown.
(4.5 stars)
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
The Amish have a high regard to marriage and when a spouse passes away, they welcome a 2nd chance at love and family. Hattie and Christen are in their 60's and have no desire to remarry. Their children are grown and both live with a relative. Hattie and Christen are complete opposites. Hattie always finds something to smile about and Christen doesn't smile at all. In fact, many in his community think that he is grumpy but a good man. Hattie is very competitive and takes a bet with her cousin that she can make Christen smile. Starting with inviting him to Sadie Hawkins Whoopie pie contest, she invites Christen. They get to know each other and start to have a sweet regard for each other. However, Christen did not smile not once. Hattie just doesn't understand but she wants to. Her competitive side is now on overdrive. But something happens as they get to know each other and find ways to be together.
I enjoyed getting to know them thru the ups and downs. When the bet is confronted, it changes both of them and it becomes another way for them to work thru it or give up. If you enjoy Amish reads, you will enjoy this one.
A special thank you to Kensington Publisher and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.
Amy Lillard is a great writer who makes her characters enjoyable and easy to love. You can’t help by smile or laugh at her characters antics and her books are always a fun read. I found this novel to be whimsical and delightful.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher. All words are my own.
This is a sweet romance about finding love when you least expect it. Amish widow Hattie makes a bet with her cousin that she get grumpy Christian to smile. But she ends up getting more then she bargained for.
When Hattie Finds Love is another great story in the Paradise Valley series by Amy Lillard. Hattie is a very optimistic and happy person, and it truly bothers her that fellow community member, Christian, never smiles. Hattie’s cousin, Elsie, makes a bet with her that she can’t make Christian happier, and Hattie ends up getting a lot more out of the bet than she ever expected.
I believe this is my favorite story in this series so far. Hattie was a very likable and relatable character, and it was very easy to get behind her motivation for wanting to help other people be happier. Although Christian’s personality is very different from Hattie’s, I found myself really liking him as well, and I was rooting for him through the entire book. It was also nice to catch up on some of the characters from the previous stories in this series.
I really enjoyed this story, and I definitely recommend it to anyone who likes Christian fiction or Amish stories. This book is great as a standalone story, but if you haven’t read the previous books in the series, you definitely should.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Kensington Publishing through NetGalley. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This is such a sweet story about how one person Hattie so wants for another of her community to be happy. She sets off on a mission to get Christian to smile without telling him that this is a bet she has with her cousin. As they work together on his sisters birthday party things start to change between them. They are both in their later years 60+ and so Hattie thinks that there is no way for a romance to develop between them but what we have learned if we have opened our hearts to love that romance has no age limit, no expiration date. So things start to become comfortable between the two and they start spending more and more time together. Will everything change if Christian finds out it all started with a bet over popcorn copper pots? Will he feel like he has been duped and will he ever see that smiling is so much more comfortable than frowning all the time. Or, is it that when he is content his face looks likes it frowning but he is really happy. Easy book to read, was given book as an ARC read through NetGalley and promised to give my complete and honest reaction to the book and story. I will tell you though Amy Lillard is one of my favorite authors and have been reading her stories for years. If you have not picked up a book of hers now is the time to do it. You absolutely will not be sorry.

When Hattie Finds Love by Amy Lillard Heartwarming Amish romance set in Missouri (Paradise Valley Book 4) In this uplifting inspirational romance series, award-winning author Amy Lillard unites a “Widows Club” of women who share solace, friendship, faith—and mouthwatering Whoopie Pies—in the Amish community of Paradise Valley, Missouri. But when he discovers her wager, can she and the Widows Club ever convince him that her growing love is the real thing—and that risking together forever will be the sweetest, most fulfilling chance of all? This is Christian Beach and Hattie Schrock's story. Christian nodded toward the step where she sat. “Do you mind?” Hattie scooched over closer to the wall and patted the wood next to her. He came closer, eased down on the step, brushing against her leg as he did so. Really, the staircase was too narrow for two large adults to sit there. Unlike her, Christian wasn’t chubby; he was just solid, thick, and broad. “You’re upset with me,” he said. He was sitting a hair’s breadth away, and she could feel the rumble of his words as his shoulder touched hers. They had sat this close together in the buggy. Maybe not quite this close, but near enough. Yet there was something a little more intimate about sitting on this step while a party raged in a nearby room. And they weren’t in a buggy. “If you can’t trust God with pickle jars, how can you trust Him with money?” Elsie harrumphed. “You know you could use a little positivity in your life,” Hattie said. I recommend this book.. When Hattie Finds Love by Amy Lillard is a wonderful well written 5 star book. You will love this book. Story of faith, hope and second chances. I am looking forward to reading more books by Amy Lillard. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions shared here in this review are my own.
When Hattie Finds Love by Amy Lillard takes us back to Paradise Valley where Hattie Schrock makes a bet with her cousin, Elsie. Hattie is always smiling and has a positive outlook. She has noticed that Christian Beachy has a continual frown and is perpetually grumpy. Hattie only has a short amount of time to turn Christian’s frown upside down. When Hattie Finds Love is easy to read. I like Amy Lillard’s friendly writing style. I quickly found myself drawn into the story. Hattie is a woman with a sunny disposition. She is a likeable and relatable character. Hattie and her cousin, Elsie, have lived together a long time. They are competitive. Elsie enjoys goading Hattie (it is a good thing that Hattie is not a violent person). Of course, I would not want to wash those big copper vats for a year either (the bet). Christian has a different personality from Hattie. Circumstances and grief can change a person. When you do the same tasks day after day, you can find yourself in a rut. I found myself rooting for Christian. I also wanted to see Hattie win the bet. I laughed often while reading this cute tale. I had to chuckle each time Christian wondered about the identity of Sadie Hawkins (he evidently never read Li’l Abner). I enjoyed catching up with the other ladies of the Whoopie Pie Widow’s Club. While When Hattie Finds Love is the fourth book in the Paradise Valley series, it can be read as a standalone (it is a charming series). When Hattie Finds Love is about family, friendship, self-discovery, second chances, and faith. The descriptions of the tasty treats (whoopie pies, unique popcorn flavors, and more) will have your mouth watering (except the pickle flavored popcorn). When Hattie Finds Love is a sweet story with an abnormal bet, a grumpy Gus, a Sadie Hawkins happening, a whoopie pie rivalry, curious popcorn flavors, a gossipy sister, and a second chance.
This is the fourth book in the Paradise Valley series. Hattie Schrock is an older woman who has lost her husband years ago. She lives with her cousin Elsie above their popcorn shop. One day they make a bet that Hattie can get a local man, Christian Beachy, to smile. He always goes around looking grumpy, so Hattie thinks she’s up to the challenge. She invites him to the whoopie pie festival, but he turns her down. Later he changes his mind and agrees to go. They have a good time together, and he invites her to do things with him, as friends. Along the way, Christian and Hattie form a friendship and slowly fall in love, even though neither will admit it. Unfortunately, Christian hears about the bet Hattie and Elsie made, and he’s hurt and angry. Luckily, their love brings them back together.
I enjoyed this book as I do all of Amy Lillard’s Amish romances. She writes with a style that is easy to read, and hard to put down. There’s always humor in her books also. I especially love characters that are older than the norm. Love isn’t just for the young!
I received an ARC copy of this book for my review. My opinions are my own.
I’m sitting here with a big SMILE on my face after reading the last page. Amish exhibit love but they also have trials and troubles like everyone else. Hattie owns a popcorn shop along with her cousin. Christian supplies home grown vegetables to local restaurants and groceries. They are both in their late fifties-early sixties. Both have lost their spouses through death. Their big difference is that Hattie is always positive and smiling, Christian goes around with a perpetual frown on his face and never smiles. Hattie excepts a bet with her cousin that she will be able to get Christian to smile. Will she succeed or will she lose? Two of my favorite parts was when Hattie learns to ride a bicycle and when she and Christian enter a whoopie pie contest. Lots of fun and even though it’s not a Christmas story it will warm your heart and make you smile just like it did for me. Now I need to go and pop me some popcorn! I received a complimentary copy of this ebook from the publisher through the author but was not required to write a review
When Hattie finds Love is about Hattie Schrock a fifty-seven-year widow and Christian Beachy, a sixty-year-old widower. Both have grown children with lives of their own and are actively involved in their community.
Hattie and her cousin, Elsie, run the popcorn shop in town and stay together in the flat above it. Hattie has a very cheerful outlook and looks at life from a glass is half full perspective. Christian on the other hand, lives with his unmarried sister and works the farm growing his much sort after vegetables that he supplies to the residents in Paradise Valley as well as Paradise Hill. He goes about his business with a perpetual frown on his face.
A warm, feel-good story that will have you smiling and rooting for the couple. I enjoyed the interaction of the community as well as their support for each other.
Loved it and loved the writing style. Have purchased another book from this same series and plan to have Amy Lilliard as my new favourite author.
I received an ARC from the publishers and NetGalley and submit my honest review.
This is the fourth book in the Paradise Valley books. Hattie has a happy go lucky attitude always has a smile and thinks life is as good as you make it..So when her cousin Elsie wants to make a bet on Christian Beachy that Hattie can't make him smile or be happy she feels like she's up for the challenge. Little does she know just how hard that challenge will be. Having lost his wife Christian feels his life is fine being faithful to the church, working hard and carrying for his sister. But as he and Hattie begin spending more time together and neither are looking for love again they each discover they enjoy each others company. Go on the adventure with Hattie and Christian as they find out just maybe love isn't finished with them. This was a fun book, I enjoyed alot. I was given this book to read by netgalley, the review is my own honest opinion. #whenhattiefindslove #NetGalley #Kensingtonbooks #Christian romance #amishfiction #amylillard
When Hattie Finds Love by Amy Lillard, book four in the Paradise Valley series, features Hattie and Christian; an older couple and have loved and lost before getting a second chance at love. Hattie, an optimistic and happy person, is bothered that fellow community member, Christian, never smiles. Hattie’s cousin, Elsie, makes a bet with her that Hattie won’t be able to make Christian happier. While getting to know Christian, Hattie finds herself facing both personal challenges and the surprises that come with falling in love.
Ms. Lillard wrote a sweet and engaging story, bringing readers to a charming small-town where love blossoms in the most unexpected ways. With a touch of humor, a dash of Southern charm, and characters you can't help but root for. Themes of family, self-discovery and the power of second chances are skillfully woven throughout. I highly recommend When Hattie Finds Love to other readers.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
When Hattie Finds Love is the fourth story about the beloved Whoopie Pie Widow's club by Amy Lillard. Hattie is a positive, upbeat, and very smiley person. When her cousin and fellow popcorn shop owner, Elsie, bets that Hattie can't make canttankerous appearing Christian to smile, the adventure begins! Will Hattie win the bet, or will she be scrubbing the big kettles they use at the popcorn ship for the next year? Is Christian really as grumpy as he seems? Read this charming story to find out! Release date is Nov 28.
I really enjooyed this story and liked the connection of characters from previous stories in this series. I'd suggest reading the other stories in the series before reading this one.
Thanks to #NetGalley for the e ARC of this book. All opinions expressed herein are strictly my own.
Much to the chagrin of her family and friends, Hattie Schrock lives a very optimistic life. With the help of the widow's club, she and her cousin Elsie have built a thriving business and a life in Paradise Valley. Her only downfall is her competitive nature. When Elsie challenges Hattie to help the most grumpy man in the valley become happier, Hattie may just have bit off more than she can chew. Christian Beachy lives a simple life. He is dedicated to his duty as a Christian man, but when he starts spending time with Hattie, her infectious love of life and adventure shows him a different view. However, once the secret gets our, will Hattie be able to convince Christian that her love for him is real? This is one not to miss. I received a copy through Netgalley. A review was not required.
Again Amy Lillard takes us to revisit Paradise Valley, Missouri, and the Whoopie Pie Widow's club in her soon to be released book, When Hattie Finds Love.
We are introduced to cousins, Hattie and Elsie who run the town’s popcorn shop. Elsie wants to make a bet on the town grouch, Christian Beachy, that Hattie can't make him smile or be happy. In her competitive nature, Hattie sets out to prove Elsie wrong.
The story is Humorous and at the same time emotional. You find yourself laughing out loud andm then disappointed in something one of the characters does. Each character is well developed and you become friends with each one in a special way.
The plot is realistic and you sometimes forget the situation isn’t real.
I highly recommend the book.
Thank you Kensington Books for allowing me to read the ARC. I was not required to give a positive review.
This is a sweet and clean romance of a member of the widow’s group, Hattie. She and her cousin, Elsie decide to make a little bet that Hattie can get a certain grumpy looking widower to “smile”. Not normally a big challenge but in the case of widower, Christian, it appears to be impossible. And it is definitely going to be a challenge to see if a smile will ever happen… This is a really enjoyable book and is a light and refreshing story. The story develops in a very organic way and the characters are so nice you just enjoy them so much. I really enjoyed all the characters and their individual roles in the story. It was a well-paced book and I recommend it to all those Amish fiction lovers out there! And if you haven’t read Amish fiction, it’s a great way to start your love of this genre. I received a complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is a story of second chances and more than one, but it is also a story a story of seasoned citizens finding happiness and a companion.
What starts out as an innocent bet, get grumpy Christian to smile and I'll wash the copper vats, and it is not a fun job at the popcorn shop, all that sticky sugar!
How could anything go wrong, surely outgoing Hattie can get a quick smile, and so a journey of lunches, ice cream, and of course whoopie pies.
I loved this page turner, and be aware this one will make you hungry, there is a lot to do with food, and maybe a few laugh out loud moments, along with some sweet romance!
I really enjoyed the epilogue!
I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Kensington, and was not required to give a positive review.
When Hattie Finds Love by Amy Lillard has you falling in love with the characters so quickly. Hattie is a sixty-eight-year-old widow who is always smiling, optimistic, and turning everything over to God. Christian is a seventy-one-year-old widower who is never smiling and gives the impression of being a 'curmudgeon' (as Hattie says).
What can possibly go wrong when Hattie's cousin and business partner Elsie makes a bet that Hattie cannot make Christian smile within 60 days? Being overly competitive, Hattie accepts the bet, but how to go about it?
This book will make you smile, laugh, and cry and wish for more.
A copy was provided for my review, but all opinions are my own.
When Hattie Finds Love book 4 in the Paradise Valley Series by Amy Lillard This book will remind you to not take things as face value as everything and everyone is not as it/ they appear. It will bring to life that what one may seem to be like could and in some cases be so different than we thought. Hattie and Christians story is a wonderful journey in discovery, a life lesson that will pull at your heart, and show that love can come softly a second time when one least expects it. I loved every page of this book. I was gifted a copy but all opinions are mine and I’m happy to be able to recommend this book.
Everything in, When Hattie Finds Love, was described so well it made me want to visit. The area sounds so beautiful, I could imagine the rolling farm land. While I'm there I want to visit the popcorn shop and try some wild flavors. Lastly, I would love to secretly listen to the meetings of the Widows Club too.
I loved the charactor Hattie and her happy way of life. She always had a smile and positive attitude. She was convinced it would be easy to change Christian's attitude and she could win the wager without a problem.
Page after page this was such a enjoyable read.
I was given a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
I love the Whoopie Pie Widows Club. This is book 4 of the series and they are all delightful. I highly recommend this and the other three books. Each member of the widows club is so unique and funny in their own way. In this book we focus on two cousins, Hattie and Elsie. Hattie is the always happy nothing ever bothers her type while Elsie is more of a realist. When Elsie try’s to tell Hattie that she can’t just give it all to God and move on they hatch a bet that Hattie can’t make grumpy Christian Beachy smile in 60 days Hattie can’t resist. This book is warm and cozy while funny at the same time as Hattie gets to really know Christian.
