Kaho Shibuya became a sports reporter covering professional baseball after graduating from college, but found the field of sports journalism to be a male-dominated world that was unwelcoming to women. Looking for other work that would satisfy her insatiable curiosity and provide her with a novel experience, she responded to an ad recruiting “adult toy reviewers.” This turned out to be her first step toward becoming an adult film actress, a career through which she would appear in some 750 adult film releases until her retirement in 2018. In this book, she reports on all aspects of the Japanese adult film industry from an actress’s perspective, from how young women are recruited to what happens after they retire. Shibuya touches on topics that are extremely serious (the issue of coerced appearances in Japanese porn, how touts and talent agencies take advantage of young women’s dreams of becoming popular entertainers), illuminate peculiarities of how the porn industry has developed in Japan (the three categories of adult film actresses, how and how much actresses are paid), and are highly amusing (why convenience stores near porn studios immediately sell out of the “Morning Banana” yogurt drink, the use of pubic wigs). We see through Shibuya’s eyes why the porn industry proved to be an environment subjecting her to less prejudice and sexism than did her mainstream job, as well as the many ways in which the industry remains in need of further reform despite recent efforts toward cleaning itself up. Also discussed is how the Internet is forcing change on the industry in other ways, and how it is trying to adapt in a world of freely available, often illegally procured, adult entertainment content.
Everything gets faked from time to time, including creampies, ejaculations, squirting, pubic hair, erections…even the sex itself. The sheer number of filmmakers out there who insist that nothing in their films is faked is a good indication of just how much is faked. The sad truth, however, is that reduced budgets and the recent trend toward limiting extreme depictions have started to take precedence over depicting real acts. <...> Even so, some ninety percent of creampie scenes in Japanese pornography are faked, due to the costs involved, the burden of testing, the number of actresses who are unwilling to appear in those scenes, and the increasingly strict rules related to sex work.
И как итог:
I hope I’m not destroying any male readers’ dreams here, but gentlemen, if you push women to perform the feats you see in porn, you’re more likely to hurt them than to please them.
***
The main advantage of this book is the frankness of the author and the absence of twaddle. On the plus side, I would also include the lack of description of high school and college years. Literally, from the first pages, the author starts directly from the given topic - the real life of porn actresses. The author tried to consider all the topics that may arise in a person who is interested in the question of how the pornographic industry functions and how porn actresses live and work. However, not much will be said about the pornographic industry in this book, but perhaps the topic itself does not imply a lot of questions. However, the personal life of a pornographic actress is already of interest due to the choice of such a specific profession. Of course, the author will also consider such topics as relationships with family, friends, partner (husband), future colleagues (if a porn actress decides to quit pornography and get another job), and much more. By the way, as the author writes, many men do allow actions that they would not allow against other women when they find out that a woman is a porn actress, i.e., as the author writes, many men have tried to paw at her by touching her breasts, for example. As the author correctly notes, there is a false notion in society that if a woman participates in a sex shoot, it automatically seems to mean that any strange man can touch her breasts or other body parts. This seems odd, after all, such behavior toward a model posing for an artist or photographer would be clearly inappropriate, so why isn't it obvious about a porn actress? There are many interesting, funny, and even amusing moments in the book, but just as many examples from the world of blatant prejudice.
Of course, the book should only be recommended to those who are interested in sexuality and/or the pornography industry, but I would label this book as not just a theory of sexuality but of sexuality within society. The book shows us the pornographic industry through the lens of our, or rather Japanese, society, with its prejudices and generalized opinions about the participants in the pornographic industry. And that is what is most interesting.
The author pays a lot of attention to the pornographic industry in terms of career choice, including the approximate amount of money that women working in this industry receive on average and the legislative problems that both porn actresses and pornographic studios face. As I understand it, the legislation in Japan is quite specific, although, unlike Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine, the production of pornography is NOT prohibited in Japan. I find it very amusing that in Japan, the production of pornography is allowed, while in Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine, the countries that supply probably the largest part of the world's pornographic content, it is prohibited. It turns out that these three countries pretend that they are morally superior to Western and Asian countries, while in reality, these countries are the leaders in the private production of these products. Why do Russia, Belarus and Ukraine play virgins when they have been working in this very industry for many years? The answer is the historical commitment of these countries to outwardly adhere to some sort of moral rules. Externally, these countries are deeply religious, yes. But, outwardly, these countries recently believed in communism and were busy, actively building it. Externally, these countries claim to be (morally) the advanced countries of Europe. These countries declare their high patriotism, but the elites of these countries (in this case, I am talking only about Russia and Ukraine) keep everything valuable not only in dollars and euros but also in the West. I can enumerate for a long time, but the main thing here is one word - hypocrisy. However, let's get back to the book.
What did the author of this book want to say when she decided to write and publish it? If you look at the size of the book, and the book itself is quite small, it may seem like something like a diary. That's why I got the feeling that the book is a collection of notes of a pornographic industry worker, made at different times and topics. However, perhaps the author has a good memory, and she simply described her experience in the industry. It turned out great, mainly because of the simplicity of the text, humor, frankness, and the ability to briefly convey her thoughts to the reader. And perhaps most importantly, the author was able to fully describe the work or functioning of the industry and its workers in Japan.
Perhaps the main idea about the pornography industry that would best characterize it is this quote:
Bottom line:
I hope I’m not destroying any male readers’ dreams here, but gentlemen, if you push women to perform the feats you see in porn, you’re more likely to hurt them than to please them.
i love kahos personality and admire her writing. she wrote both the ENG & JPN versions of her book and that's really amazing.
i keep saying "kaho really writes for women" as I was reading, because she definitely was. the Japanese title of her book translates to "everything a woman needs to know about the Japanese AV industry" and despite the change in title of the English version, it is geared towards women. it's a honest look back of her career and a semi-cautionary tale for those who want to enter the porn industry in japan.
while she talks about the different aspects of the AV production process, she speaks of it with pride of where she's come from and how much she's moved on from it. she never explicitly says that she's a sex positive individual or anything like that, but it definitely comes out as she narrates her time in the industry.
i love her narrative style because she's not like she's talking down to the reader or trying to push a certain perspective on her previous work. she just lays it out honestly, and allows the reader to come to their own conclusions about it. anyway yea i love kaho
I got to know about Kaho during a Trash Taste episode and some of Connor's YouTube channel videos (actually, I first saw her on a Japanese beauty treatment video). I thought she was charming and hilarious, so I decided to give her book a try. Overall, it was quite an interesting read and, though I am not familiar with her previous career or the AV industry, I became captivated by her description of the inner workings of this profession. I truly appreciated her honest opinions about what she enjoyed and what she thinks that needs to change ASAP. Additionally, it was great to know about the legal aspects of how this industry operates in Japan, and that she recognized the job is well-paid precisely because of the risks it entails. Now, I don't only think Kaho is charming and hilarious; she is also brilliant and a great writer. I'm glad the book now has an English version.
With 4 years in the Japanese porn industry (2014-2018), Kaho Shibuya got a unique insight into what it meant to be a porn star. Here she's written a very detailed account about what it takes to be in the industry. How to get into it. How to deal with everything. Inside people, family friends and media. I's a short book (186 pages) but everything you've wondered about, and things you've never thought of, she talks about it here. Life before, and after porn. I've heard some complaints about the English translation of the book, can't say I found it problematic to read. 7 chapters with 88 "sub -chapters". A very easy read.
I couldn't put this book down! It's an easy read with only 180 pages. It was like Oz pulling back the curtain, as we get to see the inner workings of a sex trade. I'm sure not every adult actress has had the same experiences as Kaho Shibuya but I'm sure the industry is filled with shady characters as she describes.
Very well writing skill and provoking thinking! A good book to know the Japanese porn industry and the humanity nature behind it. Happy to know that today's industry become more standardized and beyond crime. Last but not least, this book will reveal the truth of the industry and eventually get rid of lots of whimsical thoughts.
A very honest guide about the Japanese Porn Industry, with its pro and its con. I think a bit plus is that the author likes sex so much so she enjoyed her career as a porn actress.
I guess I am a bit of an innocent bc there were times I was O_O but that makes sense XD
I still have a morning-after pill a manager gave me "just in case a good last-minute job comes in".
This might sound weird to some people, but when I found out that Japanese adult video star Kaho Shibuya wrote a book about the industry and it actually got an English translation, I was genuinely excited. While there is plenty of English language literature about the Western porn industry with its unique experiences, economy, and history, the Japanese one is an entirely different beast and insider information about it rarely leaves the local language. And Kaho Shibuya, having been a genuinely huge name in that business over the last decade as well as having been a professional journalist before that with a passion for writing that apparently still lives on, it was a perfect match. And so, Shibuya's The Japanese Porn Industry Unmasked gives a really thorough and interesting account of all the different elements of that environment as well as personal anecdotes, which can be quite funny at times.
She talks about the marketing, the legal work, sex worker's rights in Japan, and the workplace culture on set... The hierarchies between different kinds of adult film actors, how people get into this line of work in the first place and what to look out for if one was actually interested in joining it, with very concrete data and advice. But also how professionals make fake cum, how actresses (and actors) prepare their body for ridiculous sexual activities without harming themselves, and how the infamously aggressive censoring in Japanese adult media changes the production.
If this subject is something that interests you, then this might be a definitive read, at least when it comes to English language media. It's very informative, well-structured, and gives a very genuine point-of-view from a charming author who has experienced a lot of this world first-hand.
written with humor, Unmasked is a tell-all that took you through the dimensions of an AV actress’s life. perfect for anyone interested in learning about the JAV industry more profoundly, as the writer clearly state both the pros and cons from her own unique experience as a popular one herself, and is up-to-date. the only fault of this book is that its topic and content somewhat goes around in circles.
P.S. i read on a webboard that when compared to the original book written in Japanese, the translator did the job quite poorly since it didn’t convey the true tone and emotion of the original writing. Kaho herself clashed with the translator, too. moreover, there was also excluded contents such as the sex NG form, so that’s quite a shame :(
