Cindy, a former market gardener, was instrumental in establishing the sustainable agriculture program at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College in Goochland, VA and taught there from 1999-2010. She is the author of Grow a Sustainable Diet: planning and growing to feed ourselves and the earth (2014) and Seed Libraries: and other means of keeping seeds in the hands of the people (2015). Cindy Conner’s book, “Homegrown Flax and Cotton: DIY Guide to Growing, Processing, Spinning & Weaving Fiber to Cloth,” contains an amazing wealth of information on flax and cotton fibers.
Conner is a really neat lady who is 100% hands-on when it comes to processing cellulose fibers for cloth. She gives detailed information. For example, prior to reading this book, I didn’t know that cotton should be spun on a tahkli spindle because the fibers are too short to spin successfully on a drop spindle.
One of the things that I love about this book is, besides all the excellent know-how information in the text, are the highly detailed appendixes that include how to produce a Tabletop Flax Brake and a 1-Yard Swift. This information is a godsend for people like me.
This is an excellent book with no-nonsense advice for anyone and everyone who is interested in processing their own flax and cotton fibers.

Just the right amount of information about growing and processing flax. LOVELY PHOTOTS. The flax brake pattern at the back of the book was a wonderful surprise!

A thorough exploration of growing and using flax. I’ve been reading up on the subject after following Eve Ogden Schuab’s Growing A Dress in a Year.
