Shalene Marie was born in Wisconsin, in the heart of the Fox Valley. She enjoys living in the Dairy State with a sassy feline named Garfield. Family and friends are important to her, and she appreciates the support they offer without question. In her free time, she is likely to pick up a good book or watch a movie. Her favorite genre’s include romance, mystery, horror, and comedy. She has been writing for many years but finally made the transition to self-publishing in 2023.
This is the first book I have read by Shalene Marie. I normally wouldn't pick historical romance. All other aspects and blurb of this book made me decide to read it. It was well worth my time.
This is very well written. The historical part was well played into the story and the wording choice used but it wasn't to the point that you couldn't understand it. It was actually far from it. This is not like reading Shakespeare.
I listened to most of the book through Speechify after downloading it with KU. I did get confused on who everyone was in the beginning but that wasn't do to the books fault. That was my own personal struggle.
I never thought the story would make me cry but I was all for tears in the end. I am happy to say this is an HEA. I never thought I would have been a hype girl for who the couple is but it the beginning I had different views. My mind was was in suspense the whole type.
Shalene nailed the mystery part 5 star. 5 start all the way around. I cannot wait to read more of her books. I highly recommend this book.
This book has so much going on in the theme. There are many scandals including the ruination of a young woman reputation with lies.there is death including multiple murders. Infidelity is a factor some are factual and some aren’t. I don’t want to give details to ruin the book for you. It is very good. I think it is a so good that I have read it twice to see what details I missed the first time. I will definitely read it again because it is just one of those book that I can revisit many times enjoying as much as my first time reading it. The characters come alive in the pages, plus it is hard to put down due to all the events occurring. It evokes feelings such sadness, humor, angst, anger and disbelief. It is a who done it story as well. I was fooled. I can typically figure out who the bad guys are quickly but not with this book. Also this a love story not to just one couple either. The books starts off at a ball in honor of a young American woman seeking her husband in England because she is 20 years old . She is seen a plain and forgettable in her eyes but that is really not who Haley is in truth. Her older brother Clark has come with Haley as her escort but he is so much more as well. Lady Roxanne Bryant a young widow along with her parents host the two Americans. The Ramsey family includes Lord Brock age 31 a sea captain, his younger brother Lord Jessie his first mate, their older brother Lord Daniel who runs the shipping company for the family, his wife Lady Clementine and their ailing mother Caroline. Their are many more characters in the story but these are my favorites. They all have multiple layers to their characters to make all names and unnamed note worthy in the storyline. I really enjoyed this book very much. I would give it more that 5 stars if possible.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
First I want to thank the author ShaleneMarie for the copy of “Scandal “ I was send a copy as ARC for an honest review.
ShaleneMarie’s “Scandal “ is the story of Brock and Haley. I love murder mystery books and “Scandal” had me guessing “Who did it” with each page. The story revolves around ,Brock and Haley and how one rejection from Brock to Annabelle starts a scandalous rumor that spreads like wildfire and brings Brock me Haley together. I was not a fan of Brock at the beginning, but he grew on me. Haley is beautiful inside and out and the character does not see herself as she is. She see’s herself as plain and not much and she is the total opposite. The book is an easy read and the mystery of who did it had me on the edge of my seat. When a former love of Brock is found stabbed and all fingers point at him Haley is stuck between love and afraid she might be the next victim. I won’t spoil this absolute wonderful book that I will recommend to everyone. Read it won’t regret it. Best murder mystery I have read in a long time. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This is a historical romance novel. The MMC Brock takes some warming up to. The FMC Haley is a sweetheart from the start. As the story progresses you find that actually Brock is a good man who is struggling with feelings he doesn't understand as he has never had them before.
Haley may have seen herself as a plain woman, but I felt she was someone with a beautiful soul who chooses to only see good in people. That is a rare characteristic.
Annabelle is the villain right from the start, and my dislike for her only grows as the story continues. It is because of her that Brock and Haley are forced to marry. When a former love of Brock is found stabbed and all fingers point at him Haley is stuck between love and afraid she might be the next victim.
Usually I can solve mysteries fairly easily, however Shalene keeps you guessing all the way through. The book was such an easy, fun and enjoyable read and the mystery keeps you on the edge of your seat. I don't want to give too much away as I don't want to spoil the enjoyment you are sure to get reading it. All I will say is Read It, you won't regret it.
Historical romance has never been my go-to read, but after reading my third book of Shalene Marie I am now converted and an avid fan for life. Can’t recommend this book highly enough.
I have to say this book was a different read for me. I tend to choose strong female characters, but Hayley shows a different strength in the midst of her insecurities. Hayley is demure and sweet, while Brock is the antithesis of demure 😂. The multiple POVs gave it a different feel, pulling you in even further to the mystery. The angst and emotion in this book is on point. It is a brilliant example of this era, with all the pomp and extravagance. Yet again, I couldn’t work out who the culprit was! Brilliant plot which kept me guessing all the way through. Loved it! 🥰
Scandal by Shalene Marie is a murder mystery historical romance novel about eligible bachelor Brock who is thrown into marriage with innocent and plain Haley because of Annabelle's evil plot for revenge. At first, I didn’t like Brock's character, but I warmed to him when I realized he had an attentive and caring side. Shalene Marie portrays Annabelle as a villain right from the start, and my dislike for her only grows as the story continues.
I am usually very good at guessing outcomes as the story unfolds, but Shalene Marie had me surprised at every turn never wanting to put this book down.
This well edited novel Scandal by Shailene Marie has me excited to have found a new Author and I look forward to reading more of her works.
Oh my goodness! Shalene Marie has out done herself with this one and what a wild ride it was! The mystery, the intrigue, the nerve racking push pull of the minds of Brock and Haley kept me turning the pages. The who done it blew my mind away! I love these characters Brock, Haley, Daniel, Clementine, Jesse (which I hope to hear more about in the next book) Shalene made them feel like family to me. The absolute who done it and the ever so slow burn in this book kept me holding my breath and bracing myself for the worst. Shalene Marie definitely knows how to do a Slow burn and make it worthwhile! I highly recommend this book!
Shalene Marie showed me that historical romance can be addictive and beautiful to read with her previous book, but with this book she blew me over the top and out of the water.
This is an absolutely beautiful and stunning read. I couldn’t put it down and Shalene Marie has officially become by unicorn author of historical romance!!
Shalene has given us a beautiful historical romance whilst still making it relatable and relevant to us today.
Brock’s character portrays a powerful message in my opinion. Don’t judge people on their outer shell because you never know what beauty lies within, which I think is a message that a lot of people in todays society could use a refresher course in.
While I wasn’t a fan of his wayward manner to begin with, I soon warmed up when I saw Brock’s devotion to his family and his innate understanding of what is the right thing to do.
As the story moves on Brock shows himself to be a good man, a man struggling with feelings he’s never experienced before.
Haley is such a sweetheart. She someone with a beautiful soul, someone who chooses to only see the good. In my experience that’s not a popular characteristic in society today.
Haley may have seen herself as a plain jane but I saw her as stunning. I saw her as one of the most beautiful people I’ve met in a while. I felt changed in a good way just from being near her light.
There’s not a doubt in my mind that Shalene Marie has knocked it out of the park with this stunningly addictive read.
Historical romance has never been my go-to read, but after reading my second book of Shalene Marie I am now converted and an avid fan for life!!
Can’t recommend this book highly enough. Shalene Marie is a historical author with a limitless talent.
This ton is the talk of the society. Haley and Brock the next forced marriage but why? His past lovers are coming up ☠️? The rumor mill must be spreading faster than one can handle! This book was an absolute pleasure to be able to read and the roller coaster it set me on! Was not expecting who it was that's for sure! I will be picking up more books by her because this was an absolute favorite!
Scandal is a historical murder mystery romance set in the nineteenth century. I love my historical romance and this one did not disappoint.
I enjoyed watching Haley and Brock's relationship develop. A big scandal occurs between these two and they are forced to find a solution to solve all parties involved. The only solutions is to get married to save both of their reputations. Even though they were forced into a marriage together, it didn't cause any hatred of one to the other. I loved watching them build a solid foundation for their marriage to stand on.
Haley was a very understanding and reasonable person which I think frustrated Brock quite a bit. He seemed flabbergasted some of the time with her responses. Haley also lacked a lot of self confidence because she had a "plain" face and there was nothing remarkable about her. This is said many times throughout the book, but I liked the fact that even if she wasn't a remarkable beauty, her amazing personality shone brightly which showed she was a true beauty.
There was a big mystery to solve during this time. Someone was unaliving some people and we were trying to figure out who this could be. There was some danger and intrigue involved with this.
Historical romance was not my thing, but 2 authors changed that for me, I won't read the genre by anyone else, only by shalene Marie and Ashley brion. 2 authors who take historical romance and put a unique twist on it.!
Shalene creates worlds that are beautiful, unique and special that capture you from the moment you start her books and "scandal" wasn't any different it had me hooked from the start. It took me on a wild journey with twists and turns you couldn't see coming. I absolutely loved brock and Haley's story. These characters had me on the edge of my seat, the mystery and suspense had me white knuckling my device. It kept me on my toes, always guessing . When I thought I had figured it out or knew . I was so wrong.
It has mystery, murder, slow burn spice, suspense, angst, entertainment, emotions, twists and so much more. The main characters, plots, storyline, side characters where really thought out and written. I just love her writing style it's phenomenal. Daniel, Clementine and Jesse I hope to see them in more stories or stories of their own.
You truly don't want to pass up reading "scandal" it's definitely a must read! I can't wait to read more from shalene Marie. I'm a fan for life. Highly recommend!
First, let me confess. I am normally not a big fan of romance novels. I prefer mystery and political commentary to the romantic fantasies steeped in lurid love affairs. Scandal, on the other hand caught my attention with the opening sentence. It led directly to the murder of a beautiful woman. The author then introduces us to our heroine, Haley, a rather plain woman with some deep self-loathing and insecurity which persisted despite events that should have made her blossom. To be honest I was getting impatient with her behavior and wished she would snap out of it. How could a woman be so kindhearted and likable be so fearful of what others thought of her? The author did a great job introducing and describing each character as they appeared in her story. I admired the people considered to be Haley’s friends and held distain for her antagonists. As more women are murdered, it became clear that Haley could be next. I enjoyed reading Scandal to the very end and highly recommend it, even if it is very romantic.
Roger Skrypczak is author of Tatum’s Alibi and Never Doubt Nadine and is writing the third book in the anthology Shauna Survives.
Wow, this was a whodunnit I didn't see coming. For 19th century London, (1800s) morals seemed a bit more modern than I expected, especially for women. (More power to them!) Even among proper etiquette, wives still cheat, ladies lie, and debutants brazenly hit on husbandly prospects. But when things go wrong, scandals--and murders-- arise!
In between the rumor that changed plain Haley's life, the misunderstandings were more suspenseful than the murders, and drove me mad. I wanted to shout, "Talk to him, Haley! Tell Brock how you feel, ask him questions!"
As the killings stack up, they're a backdrop of suspicion from character to character, especially for Haley's husband, Brock, who has bedded most of the women killed. I thought Haley might turn sleuth and she does a little, but she has enough on her plate already. Should she stay with a loveless husband she loves, or go back to America for safety with her brother, Clark?
As the romantic flame flickered, it made my heart beat faster. In this slow-burn love story, I cheered out loud in certain parts, and the killer kept me guessing, too!
I've read several books from Shalene Marie and she never disappoints. This whodunit caught me off guard with its bold 19th century London atmosphere, where women's rights were surprisingly accepted. It felt like a spicy soap opera, filled with infidelity, deception, and young women pursuing potential husbands with the fervor of a dating app, leading to numerous scandals and murders. The plot escalate, with rumors complicating Haley's life and introducing more turns than a dramatic family gathering. As the death toll increased, suspicion circled Brock due to his dubious history with the victims. Haley pondered whether to end her loveless marriage or move back to America with her brother Clark, leaving me exasperated. The romance intensified, the mystery deepened keeping me on the edge of my seat. I really enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it to anyone, regardless what genre u read.
Forced into a marriage neither planned but both wanted for various reason, can they make the best of their strange situation. Falling in love can be a complicated process and even more so when forced together by the cruel gossip game. With death haunting the small community there is nothing to do but cling to each other and ride the waves of gossip and scandal. Haley finds self confidence in the turmoil, while Broke finds what he always yearned for. Love blossoming through betrayal and uncertainty, and lasting friendship among those trusted. Haley must navigate a new family, a new society, and new relationship all while trying to outrun the vengeful tongue of a jealous debutant. I was glad to see Annebelle's comeuppance. Beautifully written. This is a great historical romance. I'm so glad I was encouraged to read this amazing novel.
"Scandal" by Shalene Marie is a rollercoaster I didn’t want to get off! So many twists I didn’t see coming kept me hooked from start to finish. The treatment of women, while tough to stomach at times, felt true to the era, and the author balanced it with beautiful messages, like the mother-in-law’s take on confidence and beauty. Brock, the MMC, drove me crazy—there were so many moments I wanted to shake him and yell, “Just talk to your wife!” (But that tension? Perfection!) The slow burn was exquisite, and every time you thought the romance was about to click, Shalene pulled the rug out from under you in the best way. The murder mystery element had me suspecting everyone, and when the real murderer was revealed, my jaw hit the floor. If you love historical romance with high stakes, unforgettable characters, and a romance that’ll have you screaming at the pages, give this one a read!
It is the first book I’ve read by Shalene, i must say it was an adventure I wont soon forget. If it weren't for a recommendation I would never have picked this book to read. However, with that being said, I am over the moon elated that I did. This book was absolutely intoxicating, I loved every moment of it.
This book is a slow, the first bit is spent building the characters. But once the characters and the locations are established the writing is smooth, and the story unfolds beautifully. - the spice is behind closed doors, not written on paper but you can feel the yearn and the passion.
Hayle is a sweet FMC, who does nothing wrong, a wall flower by all accounts. She struggles with her self-confidence and constantly doubts herself and what she brings to the table.
key points of the book -Parent passing -Misplaced bratty vengeance -Unhinged mystery killer -Forced marriage -Dealing with self-confidence issues -Old world feel in a port city -False accusations -HEA
When tall, dark handsome, ladies man, merchant sea captain Brock returns to London to see his ailing mother, he agrees to marry plane jane Haley after they're implicated in scandal by a spoilt lady of the ton whose advances Brock refused. Having never set eyes on each other before the scandal broke, they agree to keep their marriage friendly, polite, and chaste, with each other. While Haley has difficulty believing herself worthy of Brock or any handsome man, Brock slowly comes to realize what a true beauty she is inside and out. Their relationship grows in trust and , eventually, passion, but is betrayed by more scandal when Brock is accused of murder. An enjoyable "forced marriage" read.
A fast historical romance read with minimal spice but a good slow burn. FMC Haley is plain and blends into the background as she desperate searches for companionship. A terrible rumor ruins her reputation and throws her into a marriage of conscience with the most eligible bachelor Brock. These two go from strangers to more as they navigate society and murders that are starting to pop up in their London Town. Murders that are all linked to Brock. Shalene does a wonderful job of getting you to connect with the characters and feel what Haley is going through; feeling alone while surrounded by an entire room of people.
I absolutely loved this book! I swear each book I read by this author gets better and better. I love the storyline and the characters. This book had me on the edge of my seat wanting to know what was going to happen next. I loved the dynamic between Brock and Haley. Oh, and don’t forget the mystery and suspense! Scandal kind of reminds me of one of my favorite novels, Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier mixed with a little bit of Jane Austen.
As always be mindful of trigger warnings, what I like you may not.
I have never read from this author before and this is also my first historical romance. Let me tell you how much I’m kicking myself in the @ss right now for passing these by. I have seen promos for this book and I just had to have this. This book has everything - angst, an array of emotions, hot characters, suspense and an amazing storyline. I will for sure be reading more from this author and likely all of her back list as well. Don’t be like me, check this author out. You won’t be disappointed!
I instantly liked Haley and wanted her to be happy. Brock is great but he frustrated me at times. Talk about slow burn, this was sure it lol. I really liked the mystery and suspense in this story. I really liked Daniel and Clem. Such a sweet couple. And I love Jesse. The younger brother is probably my favorite. I hope he doesn’t end up with Carol though. I haven’t read a historical romance in a long time. It took a a little bit to get back into the language. Once I did, I couldn’t stop reading.
I love historical romance/suspense & this fits it all! This is Brock & Haley's story & I loved it!! Haley has been through a lot, especially confidence issues. Brock is the opposite! He has women throwing themselves at him. They were forced to marry, there is some spice, but mostly it's a mystery. A lot of things happen & I'm so happy they got their HEA, it was deserved! Highly recommend this book & author!
This was the second book, I read of hers. This book was Great. This book was very interesting, it grab my attention, wonderful characters, some spice, marriage of convenience, murders, easy to read, kept me guessing, hard to put down and other things, I 💓 about this book. 💓 Haley and Brock. This is a fast historical Romance with minimal spice, but a slow burn. Will definitely read more of her books!
I absolutely loved this book! I don't really read historical romance but this one is 💥 amazing. I was able to easily read this book! The characters are so well developed I could feel what they were feeling. There are plots within plots so it makes this an easy fast paced read that you want to finish! Add a little mystery, murder, scandals, and a slow burn romance with an HEA this book will not disappoint! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Aaaaaaah I loved this book so freaking much!!! Even if you don’t like historical romance pick this one up!!! Shalene is the author that got me into HR and I will read anything she writes!!
The plot of this book is amazing and there were so many twists I do not want to give anything away! Haley and Brock are forced into a situation and they have to decide on how they deal with it. Just go read the book 😍😍😍 I promise you won’t regret it!
Most romance stories don’t include murder, but Shalene Marie has tied the two together very well. I won’t give away the ending, but I did have it narrowed down to two characters, and who-did-it was one of the two. As these two strangers find their way to each other, their community begins to unravel. I enjoyed this story, which is a standalone, which is rare as I prefer series. I would recommend it to those who like a good mystery.
This novel is aptly named, as it is one scandal after another. Haley and Brock are forced into a marriage of convenience based on a scandal started off a lie of a jealous woman. Although they grow to love one another, their marriage is rocked by scandal yet again when Brock is accused of murder. The suspense and twist and turns of this novel were right up my alley. I enjoyed every bit of it. This was my first read by this author, but it won't be my last.
