Shinobu Ohtaka (大高 忍, born May 9, 1983 Tokyo, Japan) is a Japanese manga artist. She is best known for the creation of the manga series Sumomomo Momomo and more recently, Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic.
World: Art is getting better, especially the magic stuff. The world building is also solid with time to establish the world, the city, the empire and the characters that inhabit them. Adding tr flavor F character backgrounds was good.
Story: The story moves along well with a lot of development this time around. The pacing is a little janky as is the story telling but it's fine. The stuff with Alibaba and Cassim is interesting as is the dynamic with him and the King. The mirror of the two plays well. Add the Sinbad story and the plight of the city and the Kou empire and this story is stuffed with drama potential. Then Voldemorte enters.
Characters: The characters are given a lot of time this time to tell their back stories to make readers care. It's emotionally heavy handed but it's still interesting. The Judar stuff is typical Shonen action fare and he is mwaa haa haa enough to be a good villain for now.
Oh, we were doing so well until the Banker AND Judar were introduced. Seriously, how many evil people do we need to drive home the point that people are assholes? The king is bad enough, we don't need a manipulative Banker and Judar making it worse. *sigh* and just when I was starting to get into this series...
if anyone sees this review, me reading magi rn is more of a revisit, i started reading it probably a decade ago to a bit past where the anime ended but never finished it.
to this volume, political issues with a "king" so ignorant it's cartoonish behind it and a corrupt organization behind them is not really my thing. judar being a "why are we fighting again? i don't even know lol" character at first introduction is also not my thing (i know it's early on but i don't like shallow, immature villains).
not the volume or arc for me and just felt very cliche from alibaba's backstory to the present events but i do see how it's necessary to lay down the overarching plot, power system, and involved parties.
We got a solid world building. Character background. Social issues that our current world is also facing (poverty, corruption and rebellion). I think this volume is deep as it tackled not just the character background.
And we get to see such a powerful, strong and insane villain in black. And I am fangirling and entertained with the action scenes as well as as the villain in black getting his ass whooped.
Very entertaining volume. The very ‘convenient’ plotting of having Morgiana steal Alibaba away from his thief’s complex (something that felt like a major ‘writing myself out of a corner’ by the author) is forgiven because of all the interesting backstory he tells. I liked the villain this time too. Excited to read the next one!
Now in Balbadd, Aladdin and Morgiana has reunited with Ali Baba, only to find him leading a gang - so he decides to reveal his shaky past, all while a mysterious new Magi shows his devious face. Ohtaka is sure to give fans chills and thrills with this informative entry. Ali Baba may be willing to share his childhood, but will it change the way Aladdin sees him?
Character 3.5| Setting 5| Plot 3| Art 5| Enjoyability 5
Overall Rating: 4.3
This is the Volume where I love the fact that Ja'far gets pranked on by Sinbad. Why is he so wild to his own peeps. There is a lot of good scenes in this volume as it shows Alibaba's past and why he ran from Balbadd and his and Cassim's relationship.
I can see characters developing the plot thickening.
I didn't know I needed 2 magi fighting each other before this volume, but I super appreciated it. The fight scenes are well drawn. I wish Sinbad had more lines though (although I understand why he doesn't since he's lost well... everything.)
Sinbad is such a cool character and so charismatic. But not only him Judar who is on the cover of this volume is really intriguing especially when he meet Aladdin. The last few chapters were amazing, the best of the series so far! Can't wait to read the next volume!
Another awesome volume of Magi, Realllyyy love this Series!!! Great story, lots of awesome characters and fantastic beautful Art! Deffinatly in my top favorite manga's!😍👌😁❤️
