A Daughter's Lament, a Father's Legacy This is the story of a simple man with passionate faith and the daughter who grieves him. Laura Fox crafts this vulnerable lament using vivid imagery and storytelling-introducing readers to "the Missing." Both a void and a presence, the Missing is the thread with which Fox weaves together memories of her unique upbringing and more recent realities. With contemplative care, she bears witness to her father's life and death. She dives into the depths of homesickness and the intensity of motherhood rubbed raw by grief. Making no space for platitudes, Fox rather gives a wide breadth for questions and wonder. Those who feel deeply will appreciate the poetic lens through which she describes the progression and nuances of grief. With honest emotion, this book might just deliver the reassurance a grieving reader is longing for-you are not alone.
"The Missing Moved In: A Grief Journey" is a poetic invitation into the first hand story of young mom and wife Laura losing her father to illness.
The way she has given grief an embodied character as The Missing is visceral - you can experience the smells and feeling of grief as she recounts memories of life with her dad, and life after her dad has died.
It's a memoir worth reading. I appreciated how she humanized her father (and herself) throughout the whole work. It's tempting as an author (especially as a griever) to make your loved one seem larger than life and forget the reality of who they were. But that honest reflection of their humanity is what keeps them present and real as we integrate our grief and healing.
I loved it. Will read again. Thank you for sharing your story.
