The adaptation is ongoing and is SO GOOD! The novel is ongoing as well 😭 but the manhwa is not available except for a few chapters at the moment. Guess it’s ongoing as well (of course!).

“I wouldn’t do this for anyone else but you. I’m doing it because it’s you. If you’re not special, then who is?”

OH MY GOD, WHAT A FREAKING SPECTACULAR BOOK! It's been years since I've found a good quality Korean novel, well, except for "Define the Relationship," which is also fantastic. Honestly, I don't have many complaints about this book; it was very addictive and entertaining.

I really liked Kim Deukpal's personality *in Song Yiheon's body* (the protagonist - Bottom). He's very chivalrous, mature, tender, funny, and a bit of a tsundere. It was entertaining to read him interacting with the younger students, LOL. I'm so glad he managed to achieve all his goals. It was also quite satisfying to see him get revenge on the people who hurt the main character, Song Yiheon. I really liked how he beat the crap out of that awful secretary of Song Yiheon's father. I also liked that he got revenge on that man since, in the end, he was the main culprit behind Song Yiheon's misfortunes. If he hadn't neglected him, none of it would have happened. I have to admit I didn't like how merciful he was to the bully—I even forgot his name. I would have preferred him to be crueler. But it's okay, he managed to get revenge and make him pay legally, even if it was just for a year for the bullying—but what can you do? It's a lot to ask for revenge. But well, it's true, he had a logical and mature reaction, like an adult his age. It was more logical for him to be inclined to help him and get revenge through legal means rather than resorting to physical violence, since when he attacked him, it was more in self-defense. At least the irresponsible adults paid for what they did and suffered even more. I have to say that I also liked how realistic his actions were, how in the end he did want to live Yiheon's life and his dilemma of wanting to live and giving up everything so that the OG Yiheon could live... I also liked how he hesitated a lot to get romantically involved with Se-kyung; I liked that he didn't fall for him immediately. The dilemma he had because of the age difference and his sexual orientation was realistic as much as possible. I really liked that he got jealous, hahaha. I consider him a strong character who managed to overcome adversity; he's someone to admire since he went through worse things after escaping from his idiotic parents.

Se-kyung's personality (Co-star protagonist + Top): I loved his character. He's not perfect, and that's his charm. He's a boy with the appearance of a sweet angel, but he's a nine-tailed fox (that's how Kim Deukpal himself described him; it's not just my words, it's his). Se-kyung's character development is remarkable. He went from being a boy controlled by his father, with the fear (well, not so much fear, but at least a little) of hurting people because of his "nature" due to his past—the supposed killing of the girl—to overcoming that past and realizing it was all just delusions fueled by his father's fear. He became someone more open and willing to break free from his father's control, and I always had faith in him. I knew he hadn't killed that girl. I have to say, his obsessive, strategic, and two-faced nature was appealing to me. I loved the scenes where he didn't mince words and confronted the one who was bullying Song Yiheon. He was always tough and ruthless with him, and the scene where he cornered him and threatened to kill him to get away from OG Yiheon was amazing. I felt such satisfaction, honestly. He did the dirty work for Song Yiheon in that part. I feel like the author wanted him to do that dirty work instead of the protagonist because the protagonist would be judged for attacking a teenager when he's an adult. I also didn't expect him to be the last one to interact with OG Song Yiheon, which makes sense because he was so obsessed with unmasking the imposter (Kim Deukpal). He was desperate to redeem himself from the guilt that was eating him up for having been a jerk to OG Yiheon. Let's be honest, he was a jerk to OG Yiheon, knowing full well why OG Yiheon did what he did. It was also very mature of him to admit he was wrong. But it hurt me a lot to see him suffer from the guilt. Seeing his evolution and minimal redemption was... satisfying. But one thing's for sure, Se-kyung, my protégé, I'll always love how mischievous and strategic he is.

OG Song Yiheon's personality (the owner of the original body) really struck a chord with me. Everything he went through hit me hard, especially the devastating ending. He was a shy, marginalized, and lonely boy. It was very painful to see everything that happened, the interactions he had with Se-kyung, the fact that he liked Se-kyung, his life, his father ignoring him and his drunk mother... My God, I don't blame him for wanting to give his all, but it must have been a hard blow for him to see how people, the classmates who used to hate and exclude him, now loved him, loved the imposter, even that the imposter himself managed to make Se-kyung fall in love with the boy who treated him badly in his last minutes of life. And yes, he threatened him, it's understandable that Se-kyung treated him like dirt, but the situation he was in was understandable. And for someone his age, it was impossible for him to make decisions or act the way Kim Deukpal did to solve his problems. After all, he was an adult; it was impossible for him to act so mature. It saddens me greatly that they took so long to help him, but it was predictable that he wanted to leave and give his body to Kim Deukpal because I imagine he didn't see the point in reclaiming his body and living a life he didn't build, that he didn't know how to build on his own because he wasn't given the opportunity. His story is truly sad.

The personality of that thug—I forgot his name, ah. I hated him quite a lot. Even when I learned about his past, I felt really bad for him, and I understood why he was like that, because he was so careless with his studies and such a jerk. He didn't have a good upbringing, which is what you can expect from kids like that, but even so, what he did isn't justified. And I was a little surprised to learn that he liked OG Yiheon and that's why he harassed him (and it's truly pathetic that he only found out about it at the end; I mean, if he has internalized homophobia because he's Korean, I understand, but it's pathetic that he wanted to be close to him through those means). I really didn't like that he harassed him just because he liked seeing him cry because he looked cute. Pfft, was it so hard for him to use his head and be his friend? I have to say that he also had a great character arc; his change was quite noticeable, unlike Se-kyung, whose change is very subtle. This guy's change was quite obvious and for the better, and clearly necessary for the plot. With all my heart, though it pains me to admit it, I liked him. It was endearing and funny to see how he wanted to become friends with Song Yiheon and be something more to him, but obviously that was never going to happen (and well, it was great to see Kim Deukpal reject him). I liked him, even though I had a thorn in my side remembering that he was failing OG Yiheon. It didn't feel right that I liked that guy; I had so many conflicting feelings about him. But at least he suffered, he suffered the constant rejections until he realized that OG Yiheon was already dead because of him. And to my surprise, he suffered even more when he saw OG Yiheon's ghost; it was unexpected. But at least OG Yiheon didn't forgive him; he only acknowledged that he apologized, but nothing more. It was satisfying to see him blame and drag his miserable friends to jail, those same friends who felt no remorse for what they did. I wish they had gotten a beating.

Putting that aside.

*The protagonists' relationship* The book didn't focus much on the romance between them; most of it was about revenge and fulfilling Kim Deukpal's dreams. There were a few scenes of flirting and touching between Se-kyung and Deukpal, which was fine. It wasn't boring at all, and their relationship developed slowly but was enjoyable to read. Things really heated up around chapter 100. OH MY GOD, the chases were hilarious and so entertaining to watch! HAHAHAHA. Se-kyung is the true "perseverance pays off." Whenever Se-kyung chased Kim Deukpal, it was so much fun and enticing to read. Honestly, there wasn't a single awkward or annoying moment; I always enjoyed watching him chase. This could apply to the "Se-kyung fell first, but Kim Deukpal fell harder" scenario. Although at first Kim Deukpal didn't want to get involved with Se-kyung for obvious reasons (huge age difference, emotional maturity and more experiences, the soul swap, and the fear that Og Yiheon would claim the body), he ended up loving Se-kyung. LITERALLY, Deukpal went from being indifferent and cold towards him to being very affectionate, tsundere, and jealous. He even took the initiative to have sex despite his shame and embarrassment, and he did everything so that Se-kyung would stop feeling bad about the constant rejections. He even bought a matching ring. I LOVE IT. Deukpal is looooove. I have to say it was also fun to see how jealous they both were, LOL. Shin Jisoo's scenes were hilarious, hahaha. Poor girl, she didn't know what she was getting herself into and the emotional mess she caused, but it entertained me. It was fun to see how jealous Yiheon got; it was about time he suffered a little after making Se-kyung wait so long. My heart warmed up a lot, because despite the age difference and all that, even though Deukpal is very independent both emotionally and physically, he still liked being able to lean on someone like Se-kyung. Seeing how comfortable they were together and how they could support each other was lovely to read. Very sweet and romantic, really. Se-kyung accepted Deukpal's strange soul, and Deukpal accepted Se-kyung's twisted and crazy personality. They're a perfect match.

Naturally, Deukpal wouldn't be shocked by Se-kyung's behavior, being a grown gangster who'd seen it all. And yes, the age difference is significant, but not awkward. Let's not pretend otherwise; the age difference is obvious, not only in terms of emotional maturity and fighting skills, but also in the fact that Kim Deukpal didn't know how to interact with young people, technology—everything is very evident, but not uncomfortable. It wasn't overused either; the author knew how to balance those scenes and didn't make them too frequent, so the age difference wasn't uncomfortable.

The scenes of anguish literally made me squeal 😭 I didn't like it when they fought or cried; it was like a slap in the face because they were both so harsh with each other right away. Se-kyung's fear of losing Kim Deukpal broke my heart.

And as for the steamy scenes... From several chapters in, even during the middle, it was very clear that things were going to be intense. I mean, the sexual chemistry, the tension those two gave off was incredible. Se-kyung knew how to give us steamy scenes when she was chasing Yiheon and things were one-sided. And the kisses, the kisses, damn! So intense, seriously intense. I enjoyed every single kissing scene between them, they were so good. And as for the sex, I felt like a third person there who shouldn't have been reading, hahaha, but that's how good they are. Gods, Deukpal using vulgar language to get Se-kyung to fuck him, the provocations, the nipple massages, the thrusts, the kisses... oh my god, they are definitely into intense sex. It was a long wait, but it was worth it to get to the end to see them act like boyfriend and girlfriend ❤️🥺. The truth is, I fucking enjoyed reading them, the sex was so much sexual chemistry.

I am still reading this, but I have caught up with the chapters that are available in English online (thank you to the translators <3). I started reading this after the show came out recently, which I did really love, but because the show took away the gay element of the story, I had to read the original. I’m really enjoying the book, and can’t wait to see how the story develops.

Edit 13/07/2024 - I finished this! I found it online full and it is quite long, but I have finally finished it now. The translation was not great for the version I found which did take away some of the nuance which is a shame, but I really enjoyed this. The show took a lot of what happens here but changes it slightly, and obviously a lot more happens in the novel that the show doesn’t even expand on, such as more meetings with Sekyung’s father and Yiheon’s father the chairman shows up too. There is much less emphasis on Dongsoo and that gang plot line from the show. Obviously more time is dedicated to Yiheon and Sekyung’s relationship which is the main focus and the reason I sought the web novel out. Overall really enjoyable, I had fun.

I didn’t regret reading this after watching High School Return of a Gangster, as many moments in the novel genuinely piqued my interest~♡ The soul-switching and sweet revenge plot were deeply satisfying, especially as a response to the bullying and mistreatment that Song Yi-heon endured. It wasn’t too angsty or dramatic and I found it quietly amusing thanks to Kim Deuk-pal’s grandpa-like attitude and his constant efforts to blend in with those decades younger than him >< Still, the story gradually darkens as the assault by Hong Jae-min’s gang and the manipulation by the chairman’s bootlicker begin to resurface. On top of that, Choi Se-kyung’s personal issues with his father also interfere with Kim Deuk-pal’s studies and his mission to seek justice for Song Yi-heon.

As for the romance... this one burns hot! ♡(˃͈ દ ˂͈  ) Kim Deuk-pal, inhabiting Song Yi-heon’s body, couldn’t fully confront the growing tension with Choi Se-kyung until near the end of the book for obvious reasons: their age gap and the possibility of Song Yi-heon’s soul returning.

There’s a high chance I’ll reread this in the future. Hoping that it gets much better, official translations because this one deserves the hype! ^^
