Pretty Poison #2

A Drop of Pretty Poison

Rate this book
They say that when a love burns too bright, it’s bound to burn out—especially those wrapped in secrets and doused in lies.

After a risk is taken and a confession is made, one relationship heats up while another hangs in the balance. When everything rests on shaky ground, we find the stability we need tangled up in each other. Guards are let down and trust is repaired, but all vulnerability comes with a side of weakness. And the betrayal that hits us is one we never saw coming.

Revenge is a dangerous game, especially when fueled by jealousy. We’ll do whatever it takes to protect our own, even if it means seeking help from unlikely sources. While every favor comes at a price, choices made in distress have a tendency to backfire.

As our world comes crashing down around us, loyalties are put to the test. Nothing should be able to shatter the promises we made, but there’s a fine line between tenacious and toxic.

Someone should’ve warned us that even a drop of pretty poison will spread until all that’s left are shattered pieces and broken memories.

This is a full-length novel and book two of three. It cannot be read as a standalone, and it ends with a cliff-hanger. This book contains sensitive topics that may not be suitable for all readers. If needed, you can find a list of trigger warnings on Kelsey Clayton's website. Please read safely.

2 stars, full Review on my blog!

oh my god oooook the ending :000

A Drop of Pretty Poison picks up right where the previous cliffhanger left us, with Hayes confessing his love for Laiken to her brother, Cam. The inevitable tension between Cam and Hayes unfolds, but it's satisfying to witness Laiken and Hayes proudly declare their relationship and watch their connection flourish.

Initially, the book had promise, but as it progressed, it became incredibly bizarre and lacked coherence. The rapid progression of moving in together, getting engaged, and planning a wedding within just five days felt overwhelming and confusing. I was puzzled by the repeated return of Monty and felt that the whole situation could have been avoided if Cam and Hayes had communicated the Monty-related issues to the girls. It seems that Isaac is the one blackmailing Laiken, as we haven't been introduced to anyone else through Monty.

The story lost its appeal for me once Cam got over his initial anger towards Laiken and Hayes' relationship. It felt like half of the book was filled with unimportant details. Monty remained as annoying as ever, and I still held the same sentiments about his character as expressed in my review of the first book. I couldn't understand why Hayes didn't immediately disclose that Monty and Isaac were close friends from boarding school, which could have prompted Laiken to reevaluate Monty's character. The twist involving Monty's return felt unsatisfying and unrealistic, and both Laiken and Hayes started to annoy me. The recurring theme of keeping someone in the dark "for their own good" frustrates me every time I come across it in books. It's a personal pet peeve of mine and highly irritating.

Can we also talk about how confusing it was that Hayes could afford the house after spending $50k on Cam's bail, as it seemed to exceed his budget? I expected a subplot where he would struggle financially and potentially need a loan, but that storyline didn't materialize. Although it was mentioned that Hayes inherited money from his father's passing in this book, the amount wasn't specified, so it's unclear if it was a significant sum or not.

This book is utterly perplexing, and nothing seems to make sense whatsoever. If you're considering reading it, I recommend stopping around chapter 14, or perhaps even earlier, because beyond that point, trust me, nothing makes sense. It feels as if the author randomly introduced the plot and drama without any rhyme or reason. The book struggled to fit numerous genres and plotlines into one, whether it be a best friend/sister romance, a hockey romance (which it clearly isn't), or a murder/mystery? The constant shifting between these different elements felt forced and disjointed. While I genuinely enjoyed the first book, this one simply wasn't to my liking.

This book also concludes with a cliffhanger, although it's quite apparent that Laiken will surrender herself to her blackmailer. However, it seems unnecessary to compel readers to delve into a third 400+ page book to uncover the resolution; which was predictable btw.

╰┈➤KITTY KATS CRAZY ABOUT BOOKS

ღ 𝐀 𝐃𝐑𝐎𝐏 𝐎𝐅 𝐏𝐑𝐄𝐓𝐓𝐘 𝐏𝐎𝐈𝐒𝐎𝐍 ღ Is the second full length romance book in the 'Pretty Poison' trilogy by author Kelsey Clayton. Ends in a cliffy. Heroine: Laiken Hero: Hayes.

Buckle up and get ready for one hell of a ride...This is the continuation of Laiken and Hayes story, it picks up right where the previous book left off, with Hayes dropping it on his best friend that he's involved with his sister, and wanting them to openly showcase their feelings for each other, all of us were left wondering how things were going to pan out between the two best friends. So I for one turned off life when this landed on my ipad, I couldn't wait to dive back into this world.

What you get
💋 Brothers best friend
💋 Murder
💋 Inheritance
💋 Possessiveness
💋 Attempted sexual assault

Everything has gone up a notch in this book, when I say everything I mean everything, the spice, the suspense, the feels, the twists.

𝑰 𝒂𝒎 𝒅𝒊𝒇𝒇𝒆𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒉𝒆𝒓. 𝑺𝒉𝒆 𝒎𝒂𝒌𝒆𝒔 𝒎𝒆 𝒘𝒂𝒏𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒆 𝒂 𝒃𝒆𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒐𝒏. 𝑺𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒅𝒆𝒔𝒆𝒓𝒗𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒐𝒇 𝒉𝒆𝒓. 𝑺𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒉 𝒔𝒑𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂 𝒍𝒊𝒇𝒆 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉. 𝑨𝒏𝒅 𝑰 𝒅𝒐𝒏'𝒕 𝒌𝒏𝒐𝒘 𝒊𝒇 𝑰'𝒎 𝒇𝒖𝒍𝒍𝒚 𝒈𝒐𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒐 𝒈𝒆𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆, 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝑰 𝒅𝒐 𝒌𝒏𝒐𝒘 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝑰'𝒍𝒍 𝒏𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒑 𝒕𝒓𝒚𝒊𝒏𝒈.'

Around about the halfway mark, as your caught up in all the feels as these two find their happy place, a grenade came hurtling towards them, gone is that bubble which was wrapped around them leaving them at odds. And just when you get over one cliffy, your thrown over another, this one more dire than the previous one. My mind is all scrambled trying to make sense of what/who threw a spanner into the works. God I need that next book!!

I honestly had no clue where Kelsey was going to take this. When Dose ended, it didn’t seem like there was a whole lot left to wrap up in order to tie a pretty bow on this brother’s best friend love story. I was wrong. So very wrong and I couldn’t be happier about it.

In a masterful way, Kelsey created a suspenseful secondary story that will have you on the edge of your seat throughout and leave you with your mouth agape.

Well, I wasn’t expecting this book to end on such a gnarly cliffhanger because this SEEMED to be going so well but if you’ve read Kelsey Clayton’s books you know she likes to throw her readers and characters through a loop. Ma’am, you did that now we need book 3 PRONTO. 😂 I enjoyed this one quite a bit. It was nice to see things being worked out between the characters and watch them love on each other in ways that heat up my kindle. The storyline and plot are great- twisty of course, but great and I would have been more than happy if they just got their HEA like they deserve. But I am intrigued and want to see what happens in the final installment, so I’ll be waiting with bated breath for it.

If you enjoy books that truly make your heart race and don’t mind a cliffhanger, then this is a trilogy you don’t want to miss!

I only have three words going through my mind at the moments and it's WHAT THE FUCK. MA'AM. The audacity to end a book like that?! Omfg. I'm gonna send Kelsey my therapy bill because that twist and ending is going to send my ass in a straight jacket. WTF.

So all of this started amazing: H and Lai worked out all their problems and it was funny, romantic and sexy as hell, and I was high on all the lovey dovey fumes that they were sending my way, but you just KNOW things are going to make a turn for the worse when you're 60% in and everyone is blissed out and happier than ever. But I sure as fuck didn't expect THAT. I am not ok. I need Kelsey to send us the third book right now. I'm not going to be able to function until I know my babies are OK.
😭😭😭😭

All that being said though, this is DEFINITELY kelseys best series to date, and I cannot wait for her to continue this series!! Go hit that one click button now!!

***4,5 "You're my forever!!!" stars***

"Just don't give up on me," he pleads, his voice laced with vulnerability.
"Never," I promise. "And you can't give up on me, either."

I never saw everything that happened here coming and I am impatiently waiting for the next book cause Kelsey left me breathless with this ending!!!
I will be honest here!!! When I learned that the duet turned out to be a trilogy, I couldn't understand the reasons behind that decision.... A brother's best friend romance, why does it need three whole books to happen???
But I was sooo wrong!!! Kelsey throwed us into the deepest depth of the ocean without a lifesaver and we need much strength to carry on and reach the sweet sore...
How everything turned out to this clusterfuck after the biggest calm???
My heart is aching for Hayes and Laiken, but my mind is demanding answers!!!

"He was mine first..."

The second book picked up exactly where it left us...
Hayes decided to put his heart on the line even if thought he could lose his best friend...
His betrayal to Cam was too big to be accepted that easily...
But he and Laiken are finally in the same page and they will not let anything to stand between them anymore...
Unfortunately for them, there are many people out there that they want to poison this beautiful love between them...
Is their love strong enough to not ever break??? Will they keep fighting for each other no matter what or they will give up in the first obstacle???

"You were the biggest risk I've ever taken, and you were the best risk I've ever taken."

I thought that Cam would be the only problem between them, but I couldn't be more wrong...
Cam was nothing in the biggest picture and I hate that there are people out there determined to break them beyond repair...I know that things got ugly twisted in here, but I still love Hayes beyond measure!!! This man loves in a very intense way and I am disappointed that he never trusted his gut... But I appreciate that he never gave up on Laiken and anything he did, I am sure he had his reasons to do it...
I never want to see him give up on Laiken and their love!!! Because it is one of the kind...

"She's my rule breaker. My game changer. The answer to all my choices."

What can I say about Laiken???
She is fierce and very loyal... She is a badass and she makes me laugh so much...
I love how her relationship with Hayes is!!! They are so good together!!!
But I am kind of disappointed with her in here... She was putting her trust in the wrong hands and it was brutal to witness their downfall!!!
And that ending!!! OMG!!! I need freakin' answers!!!

"There I am... the girl who almost got her happily ever after...
But this isn't a fairy tale, where everyone lives happily ever after.
This is the real life, where it's dark, and cold, and brutal."

I love this series so much!!!
This story is raw and very intense... I never saw it coming!!!
I adore so many books by Kelsey Clayton, but this couple has the ability to become unforgettable!!!
But except Hayes and Laiken, I am very intrigued by Mali and Cam... I want so desperately more of them!!!
Gawd!!! I just need the next book NOW!!! I am dying from the agony!!!

"This kind of addiction -it stays. It never fades. There's no recovery. No chance of stopping. It runs through my veins and claims me from the inside out."

My Rating: 3 ⭐⭐⭐
Series Rating: 2.75 ⭐⭐

Ok - Not gonna lie. So many reviews said this book was predictable and they saw everything coming...yea - I and not one of those people. This book went kinda dark - not MY twisted fucked up favorite type of dark, but certainly not the fluffy, normal teenaged drama that this series started out with.

Our MMC is just as OTT as he started out, but the little twists and turns make this a bit more interesting. I'm glad this didn't go traditional with a big-ass miscommunication 3rd act breakup. I'm also glad none of the regular fluffy romance tropes are rearing their ugly heads here. This book was a solid 3 for me. I def had a few audible "oooh" and "no way!"s happening.

Last though - the FMC, I hope her bad assedness ness shows up next book. It was sort of in hibernation a bit here and some of the DUMB shit that came out of this chick's mouth, yea... I wanted to punch her in the fucking face.

...... On to the next!!!

I knew it!! Seriously as I was reading & about 50% through the book, I knew everything was just too good to be true! Damnnnn I wish I was wrong because I absolutely loved the way everything was going. Then BAM absolute shit show haha but let’s be honest I wouldn’t want it any other way. After this one I’m not sure how I feel about Cam. I still absolutely love Hayes, Mali & Laiken! Even though that ending has me questioning everything. I can’t wait for the final book in this trilogy! I need to know what’s going on!

GUYS!!! This series I can’t stop! I had no idea what to expect with this book after that ending of the first book but MAN I did not see any of that coming. I was SHOCKED and in pain with that ending.
I am jumping right to the next book.

First off, I HATE Monty. He got was what coming to him. Laiken’s actions towards the end really annoyed me. She could have handled it better and come on everybody can see how Monty is not a good guy and she was blind. Hayes was just trying to look out for her. But I am still waiting for something to happen with Cam and Mali. I really hope a book will be released about them.

I love Hayes Wilder. He is EVERYTHING.

This series has me in a chokehold and SOO happy I started it.

Fasten your seatbelts readers, because if you thought the cliffhanger from book one was gnarly…you haven’t seen anything yet.

Book 2 picks up with Hayes finally coming to terms with the fact that his feelings for Laiken are stronger than the urge to preserve his friendship with her brother. I loved seeing the romantic side of Hayes,as he and Laiken explore their burgeoning relationship out in the open.

This installment is filled with so many life changes, milestones and hilarious moments, that I braced myself for the moment the other shoe would drop. (No pun intended)
I was right!!! I did not see the curveball Kelsey (you naughty girl, you) threw at us!
I’ll just sit here dying to know what happens with my new favorite couple in book 3.

Ok, Ms Kelsey – you have some balls with this cliffy. The audacity!!

A Drop of Pretty Poison starts off exactly where the last book ended and we don't have to wait long for Laiken an Hayes to get together.

I absolutely adored watching these two together, for the world to see. I loved how their chemistry just burned up the pages.

I legit was on this sugary high most of this book from their love and then BAM! Shit hits the fan. And just when I think I’m good – the ending!!

And now I need the next book.

Kelsey does a superb job of keeping her readers glued to these pages – whether it be for the off-the-charts hot romance or the unexpected turn – you will not be disappointed.

BRING ON THE FINAL BOOK!!

Hayes and Laiken. If you thought their story was over, think again.
Can love conquer all? Can it?
Despite the overwhelming amount of love these two have for one another, a lot gets thrown their way and threatens to break these two apart for good.
Love. Loss. And friendship tighter than a double knot. This book really has it all.
The spice is 😘❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥.

Kelsey Clayton has become a favorite author of mine. Her writing flows effortlessly and you don’t realize how much you read until hours pass by. The drama unfolding, the sex, the unyielding love and emotions, the secondary characters, Cam and Mali…. You become so engrossed in this world!

Another cliffhanger but the series is out and complete!

HUHHHH.. book 1 was decent. it was an entertaining read and I was going to recommend this series but not now.. after reading this book, I feel it should have been wrapped up with them in book 1. this couple doesn’t need a trilogy because we have officially lost the original plot. It has left the building and it’s far away. we now have a bizarre plot that is just dragging on at this point. it’s all so unnecessary. I feel like I might as well see it through and just finish the series but I also don’t care enough about these characters to do so. I’ll end up skimming the hell out of book 3 if i decide to pick it up. so maybe I’ll just read reviews & spoilers of book 3.

This is the continuation of Laiken and Hayes' story, and man, does it have some twists! We pick up where things left off where their secret relationship becomes known to her brother Cam. Hayes has to work towards forgiveness from his best friend, who can't accept him dating his sister. Without giving much away in terms of spoilers, Cam isn't going to be the only problem for their relationship, though they get to experience prolonged periods of joy. Secrets continue to grow and spiral beyond what anyone can handle and leave one major cliffhanger.

This book until the last 20% or so felt less angsty, so if you can do without that in your books, this one will feel like a great match. There's still plenty of mild humps and joyful milestones with steam mixed in to enjoy and keep everything progressing. If you do enjoy the angst, then things really kick into high gear towards the end. There's significant questions where even the reader doesn't know the answers and a lot at stake for all our favorite characters. I honestly didn't expect those specific big twists in this series when I tried to think about how this turned into a 3 book series. Laiken and Hayes still retain a lot of the same aspects of who they are but show a deep love even other adults are awed by. Hayes is deeply protective of Laiken to a fault, and she tries to be optimistic about people to the very end. I'm definitely invested in figuring out how this series ends.

WOW, WOW, WOW

This book picks up right where a dose of pretty poison finished, and let me tell you, I was living my best little reader life as Hayes and Laiken got everything they ever wanted. But i should have known it couldn't last! The twists and turns in this book were so good and kept me hooked and unable to put the book down. That cliffhanger........... I mean, why did you have to do that to us, Kelsey????

Hayes was everything in this book. He was swoony and sweet and a possessive growly alpha-hole, and the dirty talk 🙌 yesssss i am definitely here for that!
There were moments in this book when i just wanted to shake Laiken and shout, "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!" But that just added to the book!!

Kelsey Clayton just has a way of creating a world you just want to jump into and not climb back out. The stories she weaves keep you guessing what will happen next.

I can't wait for the final part of this trilogy. I'll definitely be dropping everything else tonread it as soon as it hits my Kindle.

Oh. My. God. I don’t even know where to start! To say I was excited to read this book, the second in the Pretty Poison Trilogy, would be an understatement. This book dives right back into the whirlwind that is our lovebirds Laiken and Hayes. I love these two. They’re messy in the best way and I love their connection. I did not see the dark twists coming in this book! It had me on the edge of my seat and I couldn’t put it down, I had to see what happened. So you can imagine the things that came out of my mouth when I realized it ended with a cliffhanger! Book three can’t come soon enough!

I had no idea what to expect with this book, considering when the first one ended I didn’t see how much more could possibly take place. But boy oh boy, was I wrong.

I really only have a few take aways from this book until I finish the trilogy:

1. I couldn’t stand Monty. He got what was coming to him.
2. Laiken’s actions towards the end really threw me for a loop considering how much of a ride or die she seemed to be for her loved ones. I didn’t think her & Monty were really all that close to justify her actions towards Hayes especially.
3. I love Hayes freaking Wilder. That is all. 🥹

Ugh this series has me in an absolute chokehold

"She may have been the one to fall first, but it was me who ended up falling harder." Do I need to say more??? Hayes, you sweetheart (and might I add kind of naive?). I can feel everything that these characters are going through. If you want to read a trilogy and not know what to expect next, this is it!
