Negi has his hands full with his quirky students stirring up trouble. However, he's still focused on following in his father's footsteps and has stepped up his training by enlisting Evangeline as his magic master and Ku Fei as his martial arts master. How can a ten-year-old find the time to learn magic and martial arts from two demanding teachers and still be able to deal with his crazy class of hyperactive students?
Ken Akamatsu (赤松 健, Akamatsu Ken, July 5, 1968 -) is a Japanese mangaka from Tokyo.
In his teenage years, Akamatsu failed the entrance exam to Tokyo University, and applied for Film Study instead (it is speculated that this is where he got the idea for Love Hina). Eventually, he became famous as an illustrator featured in Comiket (short for Comic Market, a comic convention bi-annually held in Japan). He used the pen name Awa Mizuno (水野 亜和, MIZUNO Awa). Akamatsu, still in college, then proceeded to win the Weekly Shonen Magazine award twice. His "A Kid's Game for One Summer" was awarded the coveted 50th Shonen Magazine Newcomer's Award soon after he graduated.
After a big hit with A.I. Love You, he finally made a grand success with his new manga, Love Hina. The series appeared in Weekly Shonen Magazine and has been collected in eleven volumes (with fourteen volumes in total), which have sold over 6 million copies in Japan, and received the Kodansha Manga Award for shōnen in 2001. Akamatsu had added elements of his own life experiences to the story, and this was said to have induced a unique feeling to the manga especially for Western readers, whose lack of familiarity with Japanese culture for the most part added to the effect. The series, published in America in 2002, was especially well received in many overseas countries - Akamatsu was surprised that even foreign readers found Love Hina to be "cute" and to their liking.
He is now married to his wife 'Kanon' Akamatsu, who was previously a singer/idol. He is currently working on his latest manga series, Negima!: Magister Negi Magi, which is his longest running manga so far. Like Love Hina, has also been made into an anime series. A second independent retelling of Negima was made called Negima!?. Both series were produced by XEBEC (Negima!? was produced by SHAFT).
The more I think about it, not much happens in book three, and what does happen goes more towards vol 4. It's all a build up to the main cause of the story. while a separate arc, it builds into the next.
This manga continues to be packed full of story and characters. We learn more about Negi’s father, as well as his own past, and a bunch of new characters that makes it all an ongoing joy.
Vol. 7 - With their field trip behind them, Negi and his class are back to their misadventures outside school and the girls’ quarreling for his affections. He gets a silver lining when he finds clues about his father and that he was probably a magi swordsman. Continuing to try to be on Evangeline’s good side, he wants her to train him in martial arts in order to get stronger that will lead to a duel. Later, he creates a problem that causes Asuna to be furious at him and desperately wants to make up with her, with the help of the other girls that turns it into a crazy beach drama.
Vol. 8 - Negi continues to be trained by Evangeline and hopes to become more ready for when danger comes and during that, a familiar face unexpectedly comes close to the gang. Negi shares the story of his last memory of his father who was seen a magical Superman who will always be there. Suddenly, an evil count is after Negi, who is connected to his past, and he’s put up in a challenging magic duel and finds a new partner to help him.
Vol. 9 - Negi’s new werewolf friend Kotaro joins the ever growing group. As the class works on their school festival project, Negi meets young chef Yotsuba who cheers him up when he feels that despite trying hard, he still feels like he’s not good enough. Later we meet Aisaka, a ghost who is haunting the classroom. Chachamaru, Evangeline’s robot servant, is in full on crush mode and her scientist creator Hakase helps her, only to find her who’s making her heart short circuit. The festival is almost here, and the group experience trouble with first crushes, a task involving a legendary tree and a new group member that’s hiding something.
This omnibus volume is more of a setup volume than an action-based volume such as Negima! Omnibus 2: Magister Negi Magi. The majority of this book was devoted to showing Negi's training in martial arts with Ku Fei and his magic training with Evangeline. Not a whole lot of character development was present in this volume, but we were introduced to at least three (can't remember how many exactly :P) new characters including: Satomi Hakase, the student who helped build Chachamaru, and Chao Lingshen who is used as a cliff-hanger for the next volume.
