Cupid’s Arrow by Linda Broday
Deception, frustration, determination - all weave around Rue Ann and Logan's 2nd chance love story. The truth always finds it's way out, but the journey of discovery was filled with heartache and confusion. I enjoyed watching Rue Ann and Logan dance around each other (and the antics of the 2ndary characters), getting closer to the truth and the other. Logan proved himself to be quite the swoon-worthy hero - melting my heart over and over again.

**more to come as I read the other stories**

I just loved all four of these short stories! I couldn't pick a favorite if I had to. I love each for different reasons. I chose to read it on Valentine's Day and I'm so happy I did, it made my Valentine's day a happy one! This book gives me hope that finding your true love maybe isn't impossible after all. Truth is stranger than fiction isn't it. A must read if you enjoy love stories!

My thoughts:

My overall experience with this book was enjoyable. I have said quite a lot recently that at times I feel completely swamped with the level of sex in the romance novels I read. Seems like the farther the authors push it, the higher they raise the fence. Like, who can break through the next level of taboo and make it still readable. And … I also have friends and family that are not as *cough* how do I say this … open-minded as I am *coughs* with the material they read. It is refreshing to be able to recommend stories to those whom I know would not be able to handle certain … errr … stories otherwise.

That said, I can definitely recommend this book to everyone. There is no foul language and such a limited hint of sex that I cannot imagine anyone being offended by the contents of any of the stories. All stories are Texas-themed historical romance. Who doesn’t love the cowboy that finally finds his other half, while still remaining the tough protector that everyone else sees him as? Not me! While I have not had the pleasure of reading any of these authors before, I am thankful that I was allowed a taste of all four of them and their writing styles. I have a love/dislike relationship with anthologies. I love them because they are, in a way, a sampler of multiple authors. You can take a glimpse into the writing style of many authors within one book. Rather than buying four separate books and not knowing if you will be satisfied or not, you can take a short cut of sorts through anthologies. But what I object to about anthologies are that they oftentimes lack the components of a really good book because the stories are so short. You just don’t have enough time to get to know the characters in depth and still experience the conflict prior to the happily-ever-after.

However, having no prior knowledge of these authors, I can honestly say that I enjoyed all of the stories for different reasons. One of the stories I really enjoyed, but the ending ruined it for me. For the most part, this is an anthology that worked and I am very pleased to have spent my time reading it. I will break down each story individually with a quick summary, followed by my personal thoughts on the story.

The Valentine Curse
Brody is a Yank, often shunned by the other ranch hands simply because he used to play for the wrong side. But hidden within their mirth is a level of unspoken respect for his talent healing animals. Twice made a widow, Valerie now has a new stigma; a curse said to afflict and man who comes near her. When the two meet, they get along well and part ways. Eventually their paths cross again and Valerie offers Brody a proposal he can’t refuse: one year married, living on her ranch to try and make it thrive. If the two aren’t suited, they will part ways amicably. But this woman who has never known a real marriage has never known the love of a good man and both just might end up finding happiness within their business arrangement/marriage.

I really loved this story. Brody is a good guy, plain and simple. Valerie is a hard-working woman who has given up on her hopes and dreams of a loving marriage and children. While her lack of affection within her first two marriages is sad, I enjoyed how her knowledge deficiency in some areas worked to Brody’s benefit. He eventually wages an all out war for their future. Either it will work and they will begin a wonderful future together, or he could ultimately push her away if she is not ready to accept him. The “button deal” was pretty clever and my favorite part of the story. Toward the end of the story, you can’t help but want to push these two together and help them find their happy-ever-after a bit sooner. Jodi Thomas will be a name I will look to in the future.

Linda Broday Website: http://www.lindabroday.com/
Cupid’s Arrow
Rue Ann and Logan. The poor dears are victims of a great misunderstanding and possibly a rather large conspiracy to keep them apart. They had planned a future together until one fateful day when it all came crashing down. Rue Ann leaves to complete school, but eventually returns for her impending wedding to another. This, of course, gives both Logan and Rue Ann the opportunity to seek out answers to many questions that have plagued the two for the last couple of years. But will they get up the gumption to confront each other before Rue Ann has pledged her life to another?

While I enjoyed this story, I felt like I had read it before. The plot is not new. It is possible that it could have had the opportunity to distinguish itself as unique in its own way as a full-length novel, but not within the shorter length of a novella. Rue Ann’s father plays a role within the conspiracy, but I felt that he gives in just a bit too easily toward the conclusion. For all of the lengths that he went to in the conspiracy, I would have expected a much different outcome for him. Complaints aside, I still found this story entertaining. Above all, it is a sweet Texas romance and it is so very hard to go wrong with such a genre. Ultimately, I had fun getting to know Rue Ann and Logan and was very much entertained by the antics of the elder sisters Miss Charlotte and Miss Emily.

Phyliss Miranda Website: http://www.phylissmiranda.com/
Loving Miss Laurel
Hunter has been a busy man for the last 8 years. He has made his own fortune and successfully built a profitable ranch; not including the businesses in town he has his hands in. Laurel has been gone during this time and has only just returned to town at her Uncle’s request; an odd request considering he has not kept in contact with her since sending her off to school all of those years ago. But curiosity gets the better of her and she comes back and runs right into Hunter. The two had been friends prior to her hasty departure and quickly their attraction ignites a deep longing for one another. But Laurel is shrouded in mystery from her past to the present and Hunter has a nagging feeling that he needs to get to the bottom of it. That feeling is intensified ten-fold when he discovers the danger that Laurel is in.

I started out absolutely loving this story. It was a little bit longer than the first two and consequently had a slightly better developed plot line as can be the case as stories lengthen. I liked that Hunter basically rose from the ashes to become a successful businessman, rancher, and mayor. I wasn’t as thrilled with Laurel because she is presented as an intelligent, strong young woman, but is sometimes given lesser characteristics. For instance, she struggles to grasp her Uncle’s involvement in some nefarious dealings despite his personality and while she obviously fears him, she stands up to him which presents a bit of a contradiction. But I liked her paired with Hunter. And irritation aside, I read straight through the story quickly, enjoying the tale unfold before my eyes. Until the end. I wanted to rip the pages out and stomp on them. It finished so fast and then was tied up all neat and tidy in a few short sentences. And to add injury to insult an author’s note is added which does nothing to make me feel any better about the ending and in fact could actually spur questions that now need an answer. Uppermost in my mind, what the heck happens next? There is a huge void of nothingness between the rapid ending and the author’s note. Accordingly, I have a love/hate relationship with this particular story.

Sweet Talk
Noah is the town doctor who has followed in his father’s footsteps. High in demand for more than his doctoring skills, Noah is also the object that many of the single ladies of the town have set their cap for. But Noah is very busy tending to his patients and has little time left for socializing. JoEmma is wheelchair-bound since a bout with scarlet fever. Afraid of not being able to obtain her greatest desires, she has hidden in the shadow of her illness. While maintaining a positive attitude toward life in general, she has rejected the idea of pushing herself beyond the capability of her exhausted heart and stops trying to strengthen her legs so that she can walk again. But JoEmma has hidden her feelings for Noah for a number of years; ever since they were children and he rescued her from a fall, carrying her all the way home. The two come together when JoEmma’s love bird escapes and makes her way to Noah’s love bird, becoming a mated pair. The birds cannot be separated and before too long it becomes apparent that the birds may well have the right idea of things.

Hands down my favorite story! This story contains every component a sweet romance should have. The depth of both main characters and even the secondary characters is amazing. I love that the storyline is outside of the box. How many main characters have you read about that start off in a wheelchair? And what better pairing than with a doctor? I very much enjoyed my time spent getting to know JoEmma, Noah, and their loved ones. Each character, even with flaws, was presented in a way that endeared me to each one. Even the sibling rivalry between JoEmma and her sister aids in enhancing the relationship dynamic between the two. Overall, this tale is adorable and you can’t help but wish each character a happy ending. If Ms. Pace writes this consistently in all of her stories, then she is definitely one to keep an eye on.

These are the same 4 authors who wrote novellas for HOW TO LASSO A COWBOY. Overall, I was glad to have read this book; the stories were entertaining.

THE VALENTINES CURSE by Jodi Thomas (5 stars)

Valerie has outlived 2 husbands, is lonely and is struggling to eke out a life on a farm.

Brody is a cowhand with considerable skill treating ill or hurt animals. However, he's never really accepted by the other hands because he is a Yank and this is Texas after the Civil War.

Brody is given all the difficult jobs, after all, he's a Yank. But the boss's wife gives him a humdinger: go to the dance and talk with the widow. The widow knows what is being said about her and is really cool to Brody. Men avoid her because they are afraid there is a curse on anyone she meets/talks to/marries. However, Brody is lonely and isn't dissuaded by either her attitude or the towns conviction that Valerie is cursed.

After several accidental meetings, Valerie makes a staggering proposition to Brody and he accepts. Can Brody survive the curse?

CUPIDS ARROW by Linda Broday (4.0 stars)

Rue Ann left Shiloh, Texas, 3 years ago under strange circumstances. She and Logan Cutter seemed to be headed to the altar when she left town without a word. Now, she is engaged to marry Theodore Greely, hand-picked by Rue Ann's father.

Logan Cutter has been stepping out with the local beauty, Celeste. Before long, it is obvious that Theodore and Rue Ann are not suited for each other; nor will Logan and Celeste be a good match. Two elderly sisters decide to take action to correct things.

When Rue Ann and Logan finally discuss why she left town in such a hurry, Rue Ann finds that her father has betrayed her in the foulest manner.

I found it difficult to understand why Rue Ann's father changed his tune and accepted Logan so quickly after Rue Ann confronted him. That just didn't ring true. He's spent years perfecting his plot; why would he roll over so quickly?

LOVING MISS LAUREL by Phyliss Miranda (3.5 stars)

I'm not convinced that Ms. Miranda is ready for prime time. There were things that just didn't fit well.

Laurel is back in town after spending years in the East studying. She knows the self-made man and mayor Hunter Campbell. Although Laurel tries to stay out of the controversy between the towns males and females, everyone else is trying to pull her to their side.

Hunter was despicable. He has a paramour but dumps her as soon as Laurel returns. The excuse of they were just using each other, didn't say much for the motivations of either party. Now, tell me why Laurel needs him again?

Laurels uncle and cousin are without any redeeming values. That makes characters into cardboard images, not real people. I also felt the ending was slapped together in a hurry.

SWEET TALK by DeWanna Pace (4.5 stars)

JoEmma is in a wheelchair because of a bout of scarlet fever. Eventually, the elder Dr. Powell explains that JoEmma may need the wheelchair so she doesn't have to compete with her sister. Pace shows some real understanding of the human psyche.

This engaging story utilizes 2 lovebirds to help younger Dr. Powell find a spouse. The housekeeper is a hoot!

To me this story felt like it was from the 21st century, but with a 19th century setting.
I didn't enjoy it as much as I would have liked.

I thought this story had a good plot, just not portrayed as well as it could have been.
There should have been a scene with the Valentine’s dance, since that is what this anthology is about.

The lovebirds were a nice touch that added so much more to this story, and the epilogue, was short and sweet.

The Valentine's Curse-February 1867
Broderick Monroe, Brody, managed to survive the war but was very much a loner on a Texas ranch. He rounded up strays and did other jobs no one else wanted to do. It was a lonely, tough life but Brody managed. Brody was pretty much made to attend his boss's wife's Valentine's Party. He was told that he had to talk to Widow Allen or lose his job.
Valerie Allen was a widow who lost two husbands in the war. Her first husband was about 15 years older than her and he was unkind to Valerie. She was not sad to lose him. She married another soldier who she spent 2 nights with before he went back to fighting and was also killed. The townspeople all considered her cursed and expected any guy who had anything to do with her to either get sick or die.
Valerie still lived on her first husband's property and was having a difficult time surviving. Because Brody was kind to Valerie, she asked him to marry him for a year to help her get her place back in good shape. The quickly adjusted to living together and Brody taught Valerie what love is really like with his patience and kindness.

Cupid's Arrow-January 1884
Rue Ann Spencer had left Shiloh, Tx and Logan Cutter to attend finishing school after her father had told her that her boyfriend had excepted money in exchange for not seeing her anymore. She left without talking to Logan and he didn't know why she had left. Logan was told that Rue Ann was pregnant and left town to have his child and that the his son had died. Rue Ann came back to town as fiancé to Theodore Greely who worked for her father, the senator. Logan was rumored to be involved with Celeste Wiggins. Theodore and Celeste both warned her to stay away from Logan or there would be consequences.
Due to some meddlesome, older twin sisters. Logan and Rue Ann got stuck in a rainstorm at Logan's home and finally talked to each other and found out what Rue Ann's father had done. Theodore and Celeste ended up spending that same night together in town at Celeste's home and the entire town was waiting outside in the morning, the senator included. Theodore ended up having to leave town in embarrassment and his engagement to Rue Ann was obviously over. Logan and Rue Ann got married on the date scheduled for her to have married Theodore, Valentine's Day.

Loving Miss Laurel-February 1887
Laurel had moved to town to live with her Uncle Gideon after her parents death. Laurel was told that her parents committed suicide. When she was old enough, Laurel was sent away for eight years to attend finishing school and college. She was sent a request by her uncle to return home just before her 25th birthday. It was her uncle's intention to kill Laurel before she could inherit what she was entitled to receive from her parents. Her mother and uncle were 1/2 interest owners in a bank given to them upon the death of their parents, Laurel's grandparents. The uncle had used what was her mother's to purchase land and poisoned her parents to keep them from knowing what he had done. What was passed down from her mother, Laurel was due to inherit on her 25th birthday,
When Laurel first showed up in town at 12 yrs old, she was befriended by the mother of Hunter Campbell. She suspected something was not quite right with the story that Laurel had told her about her parents. When she found out that Laurel and her uncle had argued, he had kicked Laurel out of his house and she was now missing, she sent Hunter to find her. Hunter found her tied up in a cabin with her Uncle threatening her. Hunter overheard what the uncle and done. That was when Laurel discovered the truth about her parents. Laurel accepted a job working for Hunter's mother and moved into the Campbell home.

Sweet Talk-January 1888
Dr. Noah Powell had taken over being the town doctor after his father retired. Noah's housekeeper, Hannah, was also housekeeper for his father and lived with the Brown sisters, Angelina and JoEmma. Noah and his father had not talked in about 4 years after a misunderstanding about the death of his cousin Jenny. The older Dr. blamed the younger Dr.
Noah owned a male Lovebird, Amigo, who was getting sickly and Noah couldn't get him to talk. JoEmma Brown had a female Lovebird, Gabby that did talk. Gabby flew out of the Brown's house while the town's women were there planning a Valentine's Day party. Hannah knew where the bird was but used it to help her matchmaking efforts between the Doc and JoEmma.
Noah's bird appeared healthier after being with JoEmma's bird for a few days so the Dr. and JoEmma made arrangements for Noah to keep both birds and JoEmma could come visit them and take care of them at his place. Noah was out a lot doing his doctoring and JoEmma was in a wheelchair due to having had Scarlet fever.
The two of them spending time together resulted in these lifelong friends realizing that they belonged together. Hannah told the older doctor about JoEmma and Noah so he came to Noah and asked his forgiveness for his behavior regarding the death of Jenny. He told Noah that he approved of his choosing JoEmma to be his wife. He also asked Hannah to be his wife.
JoEmma decided that she would put more effort into strengthening her body and soon learned to stand and then to walk again. Like Amigo, who started to talk after he met Gabby, JoEmma just needed a reason to get stronger.

This is just a review of The Valentine's Curse by Jodi Thomas. It was a lovely story that brought tears to my eyes. Thomas's writing style is smooth and natural. The story is about two lonely people cut off from others by circumstances. They recognize the similarities and form an unlikely bond that becomes a loving relationship. Nothing fancy or overblown. Just a really good Western story.

Be My Texas Valentine by Jodi Thomas; Linda Broday; Phyliss Miranda;Dewanna Pace

4 stories for Valentine's Day

The Valentine's Curse
Valerie is a widow, two times over. She accompanies her father to the local dance where the whole neighborhood is.
Brody is just in from tracking down some cattle and is given orders from his boss' wife to attend the dance. He is also told to sit near the widow and talk to her. She has a curse that the whole town bets on how long any relationship will last before her next spouse is dead. Brody thinks it's all superstitious and pays no mind to it all.
He walks away into a dark section and she's going to say goodnight and he hugs her and gives her a kiss.

He stops to get the bosses wife sewing machine and she is there and he helps out. He finds himself there again another time and helps out. He gets another hug and their relationship starts slowly.

He's a loner and not too sure about women and she's had two husbands and is very shy, it's a wonder they even connected at all.

She gives him an ultimatum and he agrees to become her husband, tend the farm/ranch and she will live up to her party as a wife. The old boss has some cattle delivered to him as he's the only one to understand them so he has to fix up the fences so they can roam and fatten up. Trouble arises and after a whole day goes by and he's not returned Valerie heads to the old boss and they send out the search parties to locate him. She figures if it's such a curse she at least wants to buy his bones on her property.

Lot of tender slow love in this book. You can tell they really are learning about one another and just taking things slow. Really appreciated having the epilogue so we'd not have to guess as to what happened over time.

Cupid's Arrow by Linda Broday
Logan is back in town and runs into Rue Ann while she's leaving a store.
She is set to marry Theodore and he's been seeing a lot of Charlotte.

With some help from elderly ladies who like to play pranks and have relationships go their way they play a huge part in getting couples together that they know will work.

This reminds me of The Waltons and the elderly sisters who always come to visit their neighbors.

Little do they realize all the lies and arrangements to work against what they want.
Arranged marriages and deals in the backroom are made to advance their careers.

Others have lied to keep them apart and destroy their lives in town.

Loving Miss Laurel Phyliss Miranda
The men in town want business to pick up via the railroad so they need to spend the money on paving the main road.
The women don't think the town is at all ready for that growth so they want to spend the money on a library for the kids to enjoy now.

Some women disguised themselves as boys and overheard the meeting that went on and report back to the mayor's wife.

Laurel has just returned from the East and is appointed the new womens society president job. The men have their own club and will stand behind the new paving. The women will stand behind the new library.

The men plot to have a Valentine supper and dance and the women plot to raise more money by providing free beer to them the proceeds going towards the library.

Problem is that's all the women dressed as boys heard so they went to the newspaper and got things mixed up and that's what was printed in the next newspaper. They didn't get the mens' side which was not what was printed.
Laurel gets mad at her uncle and leaves the house, thinks she'll take the job of president of the womans' society and do bookkeeping for the saloon while being able to live on their property.
There is an scuffle at the livery and a few people have confronted her with solutions to her problem.
Hunter, the mayors mother: Melba Ruth recalls the terms of Laurel's parents will and she is to inherit the estate and all sums on Valentine's Day-her birthday.
The mayor must find her to set things straight. Some one has taken her as she's left her weapon behind.
The truth comes out in the end...

Sweet Talk by Dewanna Pace
Noah is a doctor and his practice is very busy. He has a housekeeper and a talking bird-well he squawks a lot.
JoEmma is wheelchair bound and has a talking bird that has flown away. The bird show up at the docs in the same cage with help from the housekeeper.
The Valentine Dance is approaching and the hearts with names on them has been done. Now to draw one name and that man will be your date for the evening, if you don't have a date. They agree the sisters can visit the bird at his place just so they can keep the birds together. The older sister is the beautiful flirty type which he has no interest in.
He's never gotten to know JoEmma much.

His father stops by to tell him he choose the right sister and he asks him about her health as he was the last one to treat her. He tells Noah and leaves it open for improvement.
Noah's not talked to his dad in years and again the housekeeper comes to the rescue.
The ending is most fitting on all accords.

My review originally posted on Romancing-the-Book.com is below:

This anthology had stories by 4 authors - 3 that I had not read before, Linda Broday, Phyllis Miranda, DeWanna Pace. I have loved all of Jodi Thomas' books and have now added three more authors to my to be read list. All 4 stories were set in Texas and set around Valentine's Day in some way. All 4 were enjoyable reads although very different in their storyline.

The Valentine's Curse by Thomas was by far my favorite. So many people believed that the widow, Valerie, had a curse that if she touched anyone then ultimately they would die. She had already buried two husbands. Brody, the Yankee cowboy, had no friends and was a loner. He tended to keep to himself, get his work done and didn't fraternize with the other help on the ranch even at meal times. The two seemed an unlikely pair to wed, let alone fall in love. It was a sweet love story that was fun to watch.

Cupid's Arrow by Broday was entertaining in its approach to getting Rue Ann and Logan together. You had no choice but to root for them to be together and know that it was just a matter of time before they figured it out too. Theodore was no match for either one of them. There was laughter at some of the antics Rue Ann got into.

Loving Miss Laurel by Miranda was the hardest for me to get into. It turned into a nice story but it took me awhile to warm up to Hunter. I liked that he realized he wanted to change the type of man he was and set out to woo Laurel Dean. I was happy with the ending although there were unexpected twists along the way.

Sweet Talk by Pace was enjoyable and I loved that Noah helped JoEmma realize the type of person she was and that she could realize her dreams. He fooled you into thinking he was a no nonsense doctor with no other life but was observant and more aware of what was going on around him than others gave him credit for. I was happy that their dreams came true at the Valentine's Day dance.

Favorite Quotes: The Valentine's Curse
"I'm all right," Brody finally said in a far angrier tone than he'd meant to use. "I'm not going to die on you."
She looked up at him, tears in her eyes. "I know. You promised you wouldn't leave me and I'm trying to believe you, but you never promised to love me. That wasn't part of the partnership between us."

Cupid's Arrow
He seemed to breathe a whole lot easier since they'd gotten all the misunderstandings and lies that had stood between them out of the way. He was glad that Rue Ann hadn't given birth to his child-yet. That was something he wanted to be there for. He wanted to hear the baby's cry for the first time. And he wanted to hold Rue Ann in his arms and tell her how very much he loved her every day for the rest of their lives.

Loving Miss Laurel
Within minutes, Hunter stood with his feet apart and arms folded across his chest, staring at the sleeping angel curled up in the back of his wagon.
What in the hell had happened to cause Laurel Dean to leave home in the middle of the night and wind up sleeping in a bed of supplies?

Sweet Talk
Something unspoken but electric passed between her housekeeper and the doctor, and JoEmma couldn't fathom its meaning.
"You're right." He winked at the older woman. "At least until our little bird is ready to trust me and not fly away next time."
"Just remember she'll stick around a lot longer if you don't let any kittens in to play."
JoEmma wondered how Gabby and the cat he fed had anything to do with the way he slept.
Maybe he liked to share his bed with a cat.

Anthologies are best enjoyed when it is quite obvious that the contributing writers had great fun with their characters and story lines. "Be My Texas Valentine" from "The Fabulous Four", Jodi Thomas, Linda Broday, Phyliss Miranda, and DeWanna Pace, is just such a reader's treat of a book. I loved this book--it has such delicious flavor in the storytelling! Jodi Thomas' "The Valentine's Curse" brings together two loners, a "black widow" and a Yankee Civil War Veteran, both the objects of much misleading rumor mongering. Brody Monroe has never really felt welcome among Texas Southerners, but something made him determined to stay put and try to make a new beginning. Valerie Allen, twice a widow, has a fearsome, cursed, reputation that keeps men at bay. When Brody and Valerie are brought together, he rediscovers kindness and tenderness, and she finds someone who sees who she really is as a woman. Can they break the curse of superstition and speculation and find happiness neither ever expected? In "Cupid's Arrow", from Linda Broday, the course of true love does not run smooth due to the interference of others. Rue Ann Spencer believed her father when he told her that the man she loved, Logan Cutter, took a bribe to walk out of her life. Rue Ann left town, and when she returned several years later, she became engaged to another man. Seeing Logan again brings up heartache and long-cherished dreams. Logan never knew why Rue Ann left him and the town behind, and he has carried the hurt of losing her along with a need to get answers to his questions. When truths are revealed, will these two hearts find forgiveness and a fresh start with each other? Phyliss Miranda's "Loving Miss Laurel" reunites long-separated friends Hunter Campbell and Laurel Dean Womack.

I want to start off this review by saying that I adore cowboys and love stories, so I was really looking forward to reading this book.

The first story in the book was "The Valentine's Curse" Ranch hand Brody has been working hard and has also been excluded from other ranch hands in any activities that go on at the ranch. Brody seems so lonely. The wife of the ranch's owner took a liking to the lonely ranch hand and ordered him to be at the dance she had put togther. He needed to sit and entertain the lady they called "The Widow" who is supposedly cursed.
I'll stop there otherwise I may giveaway part of the story.
I felt quite heartbroken for Brody and the way he was treated by those he worked with. He is the type of hero you want to cuddle and give your love to because you know he just has not gotten enough kindness in his life. Valerie is the cursed widow and has been through so much as well, I had great sympathy for her. This story bring so much emotion to the reader, I really enjoyed it.

Next is: Cupid's Arrow

Rue Anne a newly engaged lady has been manipulated by someone to be kept away from the man she truly loves. Logan Cutter is that man and he's completely heartbroken over losing his Rue Anne to another man.
I liked the storyline, there were twists and turns and some crazy old sisters who kept things interesting. I also liked that the story moved along quickly and didn't leave you guessing for to long.

Loving Miss Laurell

This was not my favourite story of them all, I began it and it was unfortunately quite uninteresting.

Hunter is a Hunky Ranch Owner who is trying to bring the Rail road into their town. He and the men of the Town need to raise some money so they came up with a plan to host a Box Dinner and Dance. Much to the women of the town's surprise. Of course, the women couldn't let the men outdo them. They all competed to make the most money for the town and if the women won they would get a town library instead of a rail road track.
The story is alright but I prefer more action, mystery or passion in my stories. This story just left me wanting.

The last story of all is " Sweet Talk"

The sweet talking that's expected in this story is certainly not the kind of sweet talking that happens in this story. It begins a little slow but turns out to be a real romance comedy. Noah is a Hot Country Doctor who's a workaholic and JoEmma is a wheelchair ridden sweetheart.

I loved these characters, they were lovely in spirit and humour. I truly enjoyed their story.

I hope will will take the time to read this book. I am so ready for Valentines Day thanks to this wonderful book. "Be My Texas Valentine" is a perfect Romantic Read for Valentines Day.

Good, not great.

Another good anthology by this group of writers. I found the first story very repetitive. I still loved the story but if you switched out the two leads' names with another anthology by the same author you wouldn't know they were different characters.

Another of the stories just didn't work for me. The reader is told that the main hero is good and rumors about him are wrong, but then all the rumors prove to be true. I don't know about others but reading about a hero who smokes cigars, chews tobacco, gambles heavily, and is admittedly in a different "soiled doves" bed every night didn't endear him to my heart. Apparently the lead heroine has no problem with possibly catching diseases from her constantly bed hopping beaux. Yuck! He also spends most of the story filled with glee that he is smarter than and has tricked all the women in the town, including his own mother and the so called love of his life.
Most of the stories were cute though and a nice overall anthology.

This was a sweet anthology. Jodi Thomas' story was a fun read and I like that even though Brody didn't believe in the curse you could see things happening that explains why people believe it. Three stars.

Linda Brody's story was alright. I really got frustrated with it but I think that's mainly because I'm over the big misunderstanding and people sticking with characters who are clearly horrible and grasping and clearly the 'bad' guys. Two stars.

Phyliss Miranda's story I skipped, wasn't really feeling it. So no rating.

Dewanna Pace's was my favourite hands down. It was sweet and cute and I like that he was a doctor instead of a rancher of some sort. My only complaint would be the change in her sister but since it's a short story and it's hard to sell something like characterizations I'll let it slide. Three and a half stars.

A collection of four short romances.

The first one is pretty good.

The second one is okay. But it contains this line, which cracked me up: "A contented sigh came from the tips of her toes."

The third one isn't good, but it's readable. There are a lot of people yelling at the heroine, "Do what I say or you'll be sorry!" And the main couple acted as if they had a past history together but they only lived in the same town for a few years as kids, she went away to school for a few years, & now she's back. Pretty thin, even for a short story.

The fourth story was pretty good.

Jodi Thomas is one of my favorite authors, so when I found this book at a library book sale I grabbed it, not noticing that it was four short stories by four different authors. Jodi just being one of the authors. What a nice surprise, now I will become familiar with three new authors.

I've read the first two novellas in the book and enjoyed them both. I will read the other two stories at a later time.

Today is Friday, February 13, 2015...I finished the book and enjoyed all four of the novellas. They were the fluffy mind candy "G" rated kind of books I like. And I also have three new authors and their books to look forward to reading.

Jodi Thomas' 1867 story about a widow who lost 2 husbands in the Civil War and a Yankee cowboy is a gem. Rumor says Valerie Allen is cursed, with every man who speaks to her suffering an accident or becoming ill. Brody Monroe is ignored or taunted by the Southern community and stays to himself as much as possible. Their relationship gives each of them a new lease on life. The other three stories, all set in 1880s small Texas towns, were satisfying stories but more typical of the genre. It's always nice when one of these stands out and I'll be looking to read more by Thomas.

Another fabulous foursome that kept me up past my bedtime. This is the third old Texas anthology I've read by these four authors and I loved it. All four stories were sweet, heart-warming tales of Texas sweethearts. A couple were of long-lost or unrequited love, a couple included impossible love interests, but they all worked out well.

This is actually only the second historical fiction I've ever read. I always had it in my head that it wasn't my thing but I really enjoyed it. It was nice to see portrayals of have life was in an earlier time. This book is comprised of 4 Valentine's Day themes novellas and I greatly enjoyed all of them.

Well, not sure how to rate this, but I enjoyed the 1st story, which was written by Jodi Thomas and I would give that story a 4, even though it was short it was enjoyable, I didn't like the 2nd or the 3rd, they didn't capture me like the first, and I did enjoy the 4th story. So I kind of averaged out my rating.

The Valentine's Curse by Thomas 4 stars

Cupid's Arrow by Broday 2.5 stars

Loving Miss Laurel by Miranda 2.5 stars. Very slow start, one day seemed to take forever. It just dragged then the ending was thrown together.

Sweet short stories that were just glimpses into four couples emerging after overcoming adversity around Valentine's Day.

It gave a sample of the four author's style so you'll be enticed to their other works, I suppose.
