Lieutenant-General Sir John Bagot Glubb KCB, CMG, DSO, OBE, MC, better known as Glubb Pasha, was a British soldier, scholar and author. Glubb was best known for leading and training Jordan's Arab Legion (1939 - 1956) as its commanding general. He served in France during the First World War and was wounded three times, losing part of his jaw and chin - hence the nickname the Bedouin later gave him of Abu Hunaik (Father of the Chin).

Published in 1957, this is another book that I finally got around to reading that perhaps I should have read 30 years ago. Glubb's account of run-up to the '48 war, the war itself, the post-war tensions and the emergence of Israel's policy of retaliation, relations among the Arab states, and his own summary dismissal in '56 are all told through the prism of the development and operations of the Arab Legion - and in a remarkably even-handed manner.

The title of the book is quite apt, as Glubb writes in way that impresses me as an eminently practical soldier, relating the pol-mil history of this period through the lens of how events progressed and were influenced by the terrain, weapons, equipment, economy and logistics. A very readable version of METT-TC that is more a descriptive narrative than a dry recital of facts and stats. On the political perspective, he gives a blunt soldier's view, while avoiding partisan commentary, leveling critiques equally at Israel, the Arab States, and certain Jordanian politicians who impacted the operations and development of the Arab Legion at important moments in this history.

Despite all that happened, Glubb never comes across as bitter, although he does read as an old-fashioned idealist, put off by what he perceives as the dishonorable behavior of the Israeli military and those of the other Arab states. He does hold the Arab Legion on a bit of pedestal, understandable given the life he spent with them, but he does not hold back on discussing those within the ranks who he feels betrayed the trust of the King and country of Jordan.

I really enjoyed this book, ending up wishing I could spend an afternoon in the study in a discussion with Glubb Pasha. This one is very highly recommended.

As a sort of postscript, I noted this near the end of the book:

"Modern means of publicity offer unequalled facilities for the dissemination of lies, and a great part of this immense output of falsehood is permanently believed, and build up between nations those barriers of hatred and mistrust which so largely poison our lives today."

How disappointed Glubb would be to see that the world has not evolved past that sad state, but our exponentially improved "means of publicity" today have only resulted in a further deterioration of the situation he observed.

Many years ago I read Sir John Glubbs essays - the fate of empires and the search for survival. I knew he had commanded the Trans-Jordanian Arab legion and been booted out of Jordan around the time of the Suez crisis but for some reason its taken me around 10+ years to get around to reading more of his work. Many of his books are out of print now. Given Zionist control of the publishing industry I can see why that is.

This book is a fascinating insight into the Middle east during the war and in the immediate post war era and the conflict with Israel in 1948. The turbulent succession of rulers after the assassination of king Abdullah and his grandson King Faisal taking the throne at just 17. The constant low level conflict with Israel, the rapid expansion of the Arab legion and the attacks on the stability of Jordan likely organised by Egypt through Damascus and the Grand Mufti in Jerusalem. The difficulties of attempting to create an army from the ground up in a country which had not existed until after the great war.

Glubb is eventually forced out by internal intrigue in the Jordanian court - though much to both the credit of king Faisal and the Arab legion the plotters failed in their attempt to remove the king in the following years.

Interesting commentary on Israel & Palestine with particular reference to the first Arab-Israeli War (1948).
Also goes into some detail concerning Trans-Jordanian politics at the time.
