An inheritance forces three estranged sisters to face past hurts and painful memories in a heartfelt novel about family and resilience by the author of Happy Is On Hiatus.
When the Butler sisters learn they’ve inherited their beloved grandma Betty’s beach house in South Carolina, they have mixed emotions. To put it mildly.
Successful Lana seems to have it all. Nobody needs to know that her marriage and finances are falling apart. For her there’s no other option but to sell the beach house. Overburdened Yvonne already has priorities—including being her mother’s sole caretaker. Her put it on the market and move on. Then there’s sentimental Tami. She can’t let her sisters just unload their past without at least one last trip to the Sea Islands.
They don’t have a choice. If they’re to collect, they must reunite and renovate their grandma’s bequest.
During a life-changing month on the shore, the Butler sisters not only uncover family secrets but start to repair their broken bond through personal revelations and a newfound desire to keep their family legacy alive. It’s not going to be easy, but it’s a beautiful start.

“This house is big enough for all of them. I wanted it built that way so that when they came from and found each other, they’d have a place to call home.”
Here you meet three estranged sisters brought together by their grandmother’s legacy of a summerhouse. Through their forced proximity, they embark on a journey of finding not only themselves but one another. You have: Tami, youngest, chaotic, beloved for her zest for life. To her sisters, she is immature when really she is just trying to figure her life out. For me, I related to her the least and honestly felt like she was legitimately immature at times. Yvonne, eldest, responsible, the glue, stressed. Unbeknownst to her sisters she is battling chronic illness as a byproduct of her stress as their mother’s sole caretaker among all other responsibilities. Lana, middle seemingly “perfect” sister, grumpy goddess who really is just keeping everything together by the teeth. God, I was heartbroken by her struggles with her husband. I really commend her strength and courage. And the surprise twist! I will not give spoilers but I totally did not see it coming.
This is a multiple POV tale. The author is clearly a gifted writer but I felt like her too flowery prose was awkward at times. Sometimes there was a focus on unimportant details: “Still he was fun to be around most times, and on a few occasions those fun times had turned into sexy times. But they were just friends because that was all Tami had room for in her jumbled mind.” I think I got on a bad footing with Tami right from the get go. She was so contrary that maybe the author was being purposeful in portraying her in that manner. Nonetheless, I still really did not like her narrative. “...the water was gushing out like Niagara Falls.” God I got an unpleasant ick from the onomatopoeia.
I am going to admit I really struggled to finish this novel, partly due to the fact it was difficult to attach to a main character. I truly get why the author wanted to provide all three sisters’ points of view because they had their own lives, thoughts, and opinions but I feel like it really detracted from the world building and allowing the reader to really attach to a character.
Thank you NetGalley and Montlake Publishing Group for providing me with a copy of this book in change for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
An emotional page turner of the destruction of the relationship between three sisters as a result of their cruel and selfish mother and their dishonest and selfish father.
Nevertheless, the journey to forgiveness and restoration begins with the bequest of an island home to bring Yvonne, Lana and Tami together to work towards a common goal.
However, will the uncovered secrets bring these three women together or tear them further apart?
This book explored the tangled relationships that sister's have. So many things in common, yet so many things unique to each individual. A few generations ago there were so many secrets. To deal with them and grief at the same time is not easy. Each sister had their own struggles and perspective. The summer house gave them the pause and fortitude to get things out in the open and appreciate the wonderful qualities in each other.
Think Little Women with How Stella Got Her Groove Back meets Love it or List It. Per their grandmother’s will, three estranged Bostonian sisters return to Daufuskie to renovate her home and then must decide to “love it or list it.” Many topics are touched upon such as, sibling rivalry, birth order characteristics, gambling addiction, marriage issues, health issues, family and partner relationships, childhood memories, infidelity, singleness and “ what do we do about Mama?” and all neatly resolved in the last chapter. I chose this book because it’s set in my home state of SC, but I felt like I was reading a Hallmark movie script.
Three sisters inherit a house from their grandmother. These sisters become the 3 POVS in this novel. Yvonne is the oldest and mother-like sister. Lana is the middle sister who is living the life of beauty and luxury. Tami the youngest and most carefree of them. But, maybe everything is not what their lives seem. To inherit this house, the three of them must go back to the island where they spent their summers and Thanksgiving with their Dad and Grandmother. They need to renovate the house and decide what to do with it after the renovations. This is a very slow paced read where there really is no plot twist or climax to the story. The story takes place over a summer as the house gets renovated. They discover themselves, each other, and maybe a few secrets. Thank you to Netgalley, A.C. Arthur, and the publisher for the Free Ebook. This review is 100% my own and honest review.
This was a good story about three sisters! They are coming together following the loss of their grandmother to fulfill her last wishes.
Yvonne was the oldest sister who bared the bulk of the family’s responsibility, as a child and currently. Lana was the middle child with the seemingly perfect life, and Tami was the baby girl who seems to be a free spirit who lack’s direction.
The characters were very relatable and I could see so much of myself in Yvonne and Tami, especially Yvonne, being the family fixer.
The story moves pretty slow, but it was nice to see the girls come together to renovate their family home, renew their relationship, and finally be there to offer support to Yvonne. The story really picked up in the end when some new family secrets came to light!!
This is my first book by A.C. Arthur and I’m a fan!! This was so sweetly, honestly and realistically written (with a touch of the magic of romance). The relationship between the sisters was fantastic - tough at times but the love was always there - and believable. As the sole caretaker of my very ill and recently disabled mother who was also diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, I related to Yvonne and her struggles and the frustration of dealing with siblings who don’t want to step up to help. It was so nice to find a character who was in a situation close to mine and was still able to have her happy ending. Overall, I felt this story was really interesting, kept my heart and mind engaged and enchanted, and left me smiling. I was sad when it ended. I wanted to keep reading about the Butler sister and see how their lives kept on going. I loved this!
I already had this in my book journal so I went ahead and finished the book haha! However I am glad I did. I enjoyed how it wrapped up in the end. This book was pretty good, not a favorite and not a book I couldn't wait to get back into at the end of the day.
This was quite a slow read for me however I had just finished a thriller so I needed something not as fast paced but it was an easy read and a easy audiobook to listen to 😀
This was a heartwarming book. I loved the way the sisters handled each other’s problems and how they dealt with the issues with their mom. It was one I was sorry to see end.
There are so many words in my mind that can be used to explain this book, but trying to get them together in a short summary for a review is hard. So longer than normal review is what this is. The Butler sisters, Yvonne, Lana and Tami, grew up in the same household but were treated very differently, especially after their parents were divorced.
Yvonne is the oldest, the principal of a school, under high stress and now looking after their mother who suffered a stroke years ago. She is still after her sibilngs to help her pay for their mother’s care. After all, she was the one always in charge growing up, but all this stress is causing her serious health problems and if she isn’t careful it can lead to more issues.
Lana is the middle daughter, a photographer, very successful, has money, and happily married to a man that loves her. At least that is the way it seems to everyone else. Behind that closed house door though, her world is falling apart. Her husband has an addiction, one that is leading to major financial problems and it might lead to something else if the loan isn’t repaid.
Tami is the baby, had major problems growing up not only because of the way she was talked to and treated by her mother, but also because she had a learning disability. Now as an adult while she is getting help in some areas, staying employed is a problem that isn’t going away.
There is one thing that does bring the sisters together and that is their grandmother. Every summer they would go to this small island of the Carolina coast to spend time with their father when he was alive, and their grandmother. When the three sisters were called to go to a lawyers office, they never expected it was to find out that they had inherited their grandmother’s property after she had suddenly passed away. Nor did they expect their to be conditions in the will, they could not just sell it, like two of them wanted to. Instead the three of them had to come together and spend time back in that house while it was being remodeled. After everything was completed, then and only then, was it allowed to be sold. The question was then could all three of them come together, work through all their differences, and be able to handle the family secret. One that might actually explain why things happened and grant all of them some peace
This book’s author put the story together very well and great to read. I loved the twists, turns and things that happened. It showed that while everything might seem perfect on the outside, it is not always on the inside. Each child can be in the same house but raised very differently.. It talks about an island that has a strong history that will hopefully never be forgotten and family finally coming together the way they need to be.
Three sisters who inherits a home from their father’s mom on an island down in South Carolina. We follow the sisters lives from their povs not only with each other but family, life and career choices.
-Three POVs: Yvonne, Tami, & Lana. -One thing that is true & needs to break from families all around the world is KEEP SECRETS. The way people til this day don’t understand a lot of secrets do more harm than good. -Freda, their mother, is the prime example why you letting man go is fine but taking your behind to therapy is a must. No parent should ever take out their frustration on their kids because of what the other parent did. -Grandma was cool and all but you’re just as much to blame for not holding your child accountable. Yall mothers and yall sons are a dangerous combo. -It was great to see the sisters bond again. As well as Yvonne finding her voice & some sweetness. -Tami not having the best outlook on love because of her surroundings finally giving it a try. Sometimes the one is the person right there in your face. Good to see her passions unfold and where she gets it from. -Lana is a better woman than I’ll ever be. To want to bring life into a world where a person has done the same thing multiple times to harm y’all’s family is crazy. I’ll been in struggle love and every struggle don’t deserve my love. -Issac was dead wrong. Talking about never letting anything happen to his wife. Excuse me sir!!! You can’t be for real. Have you not already by hands hurt your marriage? Oh okay. Lana that’s her man and she stood beside him. ALL I KNOW IS DONT PUT MY LIFE IN NO MESS THAT I HAD NO PARTS IN. Yvonne you’re a better sister-in-law I’ll ever be too.
The book was good. Another family with so bs trying to reconnect, deal with life and live.

Having a few sisters myself I thought this would be an interesting book. I ended up buy the audio version and I must say I did not care for the narrator of the audio version. I think if I bought the book to read I may have liked it more.
There are 3 Butler sisters Yvonne, Lara and Tami. They are not close at all and all three of them have various problems and secrets. When their beloved Grandmother Betty dies they are shocked and Grandma Betty has left the three of them her house on Patuskie Island, South Carolina but with conditions. The three of them must go to the house and renovate it together. She put $50,000 in trust fund for the repairs and renovations. Once they are done they can keep the house or sell it.
I thoroughly enjoyed the part of the book that took place in South Carolina. The sisters themselves have many secrets from each other as did Grandma Betty. Drama ensues as all the secrets get revealed. All works out in the end and the three sisters become close and are happy again.
AC Arthur takes us back to the low country of South Carolina as the three Butler sisters return to their grandmother’s home on Daufuskie Island. Leave it to Us is a beautifully written story about the complexities and beauty of sisterhood. The story gives all the feels as these three sisters come together to honor their grandmother’s last wishes, uncover family secrets all while rebuilding their bond as sisters. As I was reading I found myself rooting for the eldest sister Yvonne who spent her entire life living for her mother and taking care of her sisters but by the end of the story she is choosing herself and coming into her own with the support of her sisters. The therapist in me loves how the author touches on the difficulties of mental health through the sister Tami’s struggles with ADHD and Lana’s husband Issac’s struggles with gambling addiction. The reality of the story is what hit home for me the most. The author gives us a view of what often happens within the family structure when we don’t talk about and address those secrets and challenges that we need to heal from. Ac Arthur also gives us a dose of romance as the sisters Tami and Yvonne find love and Lana and her husband Isaac’s dream as a family becomes a reality. Overall, this was a wonderful story, and I am grateful that I got to experience it. Well Done AC Arthur!
This is an interesting read with three sisters Lana, Tami and Yvonne who are dealing with family issues of their own. Lana, Tami and Yvonne’s inherited their grandmother’s beach house in South Carolina. Yvonne is the oldest sister and a high school principal and the sole care taker of the sister’s mother after she suffered a stroke. Lana is the middle daughter married with her own family issues. Tami is the baby of the bunch with issues of her own. Each of the sisters each have their own agenda as to what they should do with the beach house. At the reading of the will, the sisters find that their grandmother had her own agenda with the sisters staying at the beach house and renovating it. When the stipulation of once the renovations were complete the sisters could sell the beach house. As the beach house is being renovated the sisters are finding out secrets and other things about the family that are bring the sisters closer together and understanding things much better. This is a great read that happens in many families which sometimes brings families together and sometimes pull the families farther apart.
Will the sisters sell the beach house or will they keep the beach house and continue to mend their bodies, minds and souls?
I received an ARC via NetGalley and Montlake and I am leaving my review voluntarily.
People always say that it’s amazing how siblings can be so different even though they grew up in the same home. We definitely see that with the Butler sisters. Yvonne, Lana, & Tami can’t be any more different and butt heads over just about everything.
They unexpectedly inherit their grandmother’s home that needs repairs before they can sell. The last thing they want to do is spend the summer together. We watch them break down walls with each other as they renovate. And they learn to stand together as they spill their secrets and discover new ones.
This was my November Amazon first read pick and it was perfection. It reminded me of walking through my childhood home earlier this year. I watched the years of memories be covered in fresh paint and also uncover 60+ years of treasures in the nooks of each room. It’s amazing how a home can make you feel!
This released in 12/1/23. Go grab it!

🤔 Have you inherited a family heirloom/item? If so, what was it?
Meet the Butler sisters – Yvonne, the responsible one; Lana, the middle child who seems to have everything; and Tami, the youngest who doesn’t quite have her life together. When Grandma Betty dies, the three sisters are forced to go to Dafuskie island for the summer to renovate her house before they can sell it. Throughout the book there is plenty of unresolved trauma and secrets that the sisters must air and deal with.
The book started out very strong with lots of Tami attitude, which I really enjoyed. Although there is romance in the book, it felt more like a women’s fiction book than a romance book, and it felt like things slowed down in the middle of the book before coming to a hasty conclusion at the end. I also felt that there was character development that never resulted in anything, like a certain character who disappeared midway through and a career path that was left unexplored.
Overall, it was an enjoyable story, just left me wanting a little more resolution after so much development and buildup. This was my first A C Arthur book, and I would read another.
Not having any sisters myself, I’m always drawn to stories that explore sisterhood, and this one hit all the right notes! Three disconnected sisters find themselves inheriting their grandmother’s beloved home—the place where they spent many happy summers together. Of course, there’s a twist: they have to oversee the much-needed renovations of the house. This setup led to the sisters being thrust back into each other’s lives, and I loved watching the unique blend of their personalities and emotions unfold.
Each sister brings something different to the table, from their struggles to their distinct life stages, and that’s what made this book stand out for me. The tension and distance between them felt real, but so did their undeniable connection rooted in shared memories. There’s just the right balance of drama, intrigue, and a dash of potential romance to keep the story moving. Overall, this was a heartwarming and engaging read that reminded me of the complexity and beauty of family bonds.
Leave it to Us by A.C. Arthur was a memorable and heartfelt read that left me craving more. This was a well written book that developed the main characters, who are also sisters, well. I was able to get a great understanding of each sister- Yvonne, Lana and Tammy- and what Grandma Betty meant to each one of them. The setting of a summer house left me yearning for summer, and I could imagine the nostalgic setting of a summer home as I was reading. The book unfolded in multiple layers, and while resolved I was left wanting more as a reader. Although there was romance in this book, I would not classify it as romance. It was a nice addition to the book, but not necessarily what I look for in a book.
Overall, this was a well written book but not a good fit for me and my interests.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book and a chance to review it. #LeaveIttoUs #NetGalley
I am a self-admitted book worm, and I have been the majority of my life. Here lately, I gravitate towards suspenseful books. One genre that I have also been gravitating towards is books that make me laugh. Because of this, as the subject matter was different than what I typically read, I was nervous about reading this book. I needn't have worried.
Pros: I tend to be hesitant to read books from a new author, because it tends to take me a while to get used to their particular writing style. While it did take a while for this book to "hook me", overall I definitely enjoyed it.
Cons: None at all! Good book, and I'm excited to read more from the author.
I like books that I can identify with the characters. I definitely identified with the character of Yvonne. I don't want to spoil anything, but those who also enjoy that character will be pleased with her ending. I recommend this book.
Every marriage has heartaches, regardless how painful. Families have embarrassing secrets they don’t want revealed, but in life, what you do in the dark will often times come to life, even after death. I loved this novel and A.C. was spot on with sibling rivalry, a hurt and domineering mother, a deceitful and loving grandmother and father. This author has always been one of my favorite because the truth is always brought to life in every novel and all the characters’ thoughts are thoroughly developed. I also loved the fact that the sisters realized that they would not carry the burden of the lies that had been told but live in the present; also, I love novels like this one and I will forever share them with family and friends. Thanks again, A. C. Arthur!
If A.C Arthur does anything well, it is write the hell out a story about 3 sisters! This book follows sisters Yvonne, Lana and Tami. We meet them as they are learning about the inheritance they received after the death of their beloved grandma Betty. As they are going through the specifics of their inheritance, old hurts disappointments and family secrets come out. These women fall into the typical sibling roles: Oldest Yvonne is family fixer, middle child Lana is living her life on her terms and carefree (so the others think) and youngest Tami is the one who can’t seem to get it together.
I love family stories, because it lets me know that deep down, we are all the same. I love the authors writing style and storytelling. Actually, I am looking for my next read by her as we speak! Definitely a must read.
The Butler sisters learned more in the aftermath of their beloved grandmother's passing than just fixing up her home. The secrets held for over twenty years came to life, the sisters learned to be sisters finally and all of them including their mother faced some hard truths and forged a stronger bond with each other, their mother and the secret they had recently learned about! I liked their story and was glad Yvonne and Deacon fell in love , Tami admitted her true feelings for Gabriel and Lana and Isaac got their marriage back on track and added to their family! Great story AC!!!!
