This has a great setting in Northern Sweden which creates a good atmosphere but the novel has a poor, literal translation which gives a flatness to the storytelling. There are a lot of characters to keep track of and the plot is unnecessarily complex although there are plenty of twists and some are really good. It’s an average read but I am intrigued enough to read the second!

'The Snow Angel' is an engaging police procedural story, a strong start to a new series and a creditable debut novel.
I know nothing about how policing in the north of Sweden works but this book felt authentic as a description of an investigation. The plot is relatively complex and the police have to uncover and collate a lot of information to make the connections that will tell them what's going on and who is doing what to whom. The exposition is managed in a low-key down-to-earth way that seemed very believable to me but which still kept me engaged with the puzzle.
Because it's set in the north of Sweden in the depths of winter and starts with a suicide and ends up including multiple murders, I'm sure 'The Snow Angel' will be listed as Scandi-noir. Yet, this isn't a bleak book. There is little or no despair. The two main detectives, while facing some personal challenges, are not depressed or alcoholic or suffering from PTSD. They're just police officers doing their job and coping with a rising and apparently unconnected number of murders in what should be a relatively peaceful part of Sweden,
I liked that there was always a lot going on, The story gained momentum as it went along and more and more connections between the players were revealed.
There are several teenage characters in the book and at least three of them are very unhappy. I was impressed by how well the characters and the pressures that they face were described. That we sometimes saw what was going on from the point of view of a teenage girl who found herself at the centre of events that she was powerless to influence added a human element to the story that made it more than a puzzle to be solved.
The adults in the book often turned out to be more complicated than they at first appeared to be. I liked that at least one of the criminals wasn't all bad, that one of them was close to insane at times and that one of them was simply running a business, albeit a heartless, exploitative, sometimes lethal business.
The two detectives who around whom the series will be based make interesting foils for one another. One is a local, a family man with two teenage sons and an obsession with his work The other, who works for him, is a wealthy woman with an aristocratic name and a posh Stockholm accent who has moved into the frozen north after her divorce and wants her teenage daughter to join her. I thought they were both interesting and I liked how they worked together. I only got a surface-level understanding of their thoughts and backgrounds but it was enough to engage me with them as people and I'm sure more details will emerge as the series progresses.

Tack Norstedt förlag för överraskningen!
Snöängeln utspelar sig i Umeå. En pojke hoppar från en bro. En kvinna hittas mördad i sitt hem. En tonårsflicka försvinner spårlöst. Även om händelserna verkar helt utspridda, blir det mer och mer klart att alla har en koppling till varandra. Polisen Charlotte von Klint, som har ett brokigt förflutet, tillsammans med polisen Per Berg är de som tar sig an fallet.
Det är alltid kul att läsa böcker som utspelar sig i de mer norra delarna av Sverige och jag, som är Lulebo, gillar verkligen den trenden!
Snöängeln är en bladvändare utan dess lite. Handlingen går fort framåt, kapitlen är korta och perspektiven är många. Jag hade önskat att man hade något slags persongalleri i början för att lättare kunna veta om vilka alla karaktärer var och hur dem var i relation till andra. Det var ofta jag blandade ihop döttrar och mammor, vilket gjorde läsningen i början väldigt förvirrande. Jag var inte heller ett så stort fan att de unga kvinnorna som ständigt uttryckte sig att de ville vara smala och att de skulle bli "skinny". Det kändes lite överflödigt och gjorde ingenting till den annars väldigt spännande berättelsen. Kan inte unga flickor i böcker bara få vara utan att deras kroppar på något sätt ska hamna i fokus - som inte ens har något mer berättelsen i sig att göra?
Men utöver detta, så är den här deckaren otroligt välskriven. Det märks att Edvinsson har studerat kriminologi, för jag hade INGEN ANING om hur allting hängde ihop och kunde inte för hela mitt liv ha förstått vem som låg bakom allting. Det var spännande in i det sista och kändes makalöst komponerat hela berättelsen igenom. Det är spännande karaktärer att följa, trassliga familjesituationer och tafatta relationer.
Jag gillar också hur slutet vävdes ihop och att man (förhoppningsvis?) kan tänka sig att det kommer fler böcker om poliserna Per Berg och Charlotte von Klint. Jag hoppas i alla fall på mer!

This was a Kindle First offering which I was delighted to see as I love the Nordic authors. They know how to weave a terrific line !! There were some very surprising and shocking incidents in this one and it certainly held my interest.
Camilla the Instagram fiend was a scary proposition as there are probably people like her that really exist in this day and age.
Per seems very smitten with Charlotte, which is an interesting relationship, since she is also good friends with Mia, his wife.......one to watch in ensuing stories.
I noticed the translator went with Americanised spellings but then saw at the end that he's based there. For some reason Tramadol was never capitalised, whereas another brand name-Dolcontin-always was. Thought that was peculiar but it happened at every mention. Canvas was written and not canvass.....drama queen was a little lost in translation as well as it pretty much referred to a tarty girl, and then this sentence, "I've been looking for you like a ferret" probably meant "I've been trying to ferret you out" !! They write Syndicates a lot, too, whereas they're usually referred to as Syndicate in the singular, these types of organisations.
A sentence near the end caught my eye.....being a fan of true crime, people often wonder why and I often say pretty much the same thing, "It's said that all of us are potential murderers, if the situation demands it."
I'll definitely be getting hold of the next story in this series.

Winter in Northern Sweden, the suicide of a teenager leads to the unravelling of a complex plot involving drugs, shady organised crime syndicates and the settling of old scores.
There are an awful lot of characters which makes it hard to keep track of who’s who, especially as some of them are rather two-dimensional, and things unfold slowly until the last 40 percent or so when the plot seems to go into overdrive. The prose also feels rather flat – maybe it’s lost something in translation.
It’s well-plotted and there are enough twists to keep your interest but as an overall package it never really sparkles.

Jag har sett och hört så många som läst och gillat boken så blev väldigt nyfiken på att själv läsa boken. Efter att ha lyssnat på den första boken i serien ”Lust att döda” fortsatte jag raskt att lyssna vidare på den nya boken. Jag tyckte den första delen var väldigt bra, men den här var ju ännu bättre.
Jag vill varna för sträckläsning/sträcklyssning, det går inte att släppa historien för man vill veta hur det ska gå. Historien har ett driv och det händer mycket. Många samhällsaktuella frågor som psykisk ohälsa hos unga, sociala medier, droger och kriminalitet lyfts. Jag gillar poliserna Charlotte och Per, de är ett oslagbart team och jag ser fram emot fler böcker i serien.

So bad. High rating is baffling. Initially I tried to be forgiving because I thought the stilted style was just poor translation but then the story was absolutely ludicrous and was barely a first cousin to a decent mystery. Avoid

The writing was not good but I think that could have been an issue with translation. There were also too many characters so it got very confusing. However, the plot was good with a few twists and turns and things ended well with loose ends tied up. So overall, not bad

2018 52 Book Challenge - 41) A Book By A Scandinavian Author
You can clearly tell when reading that the author knows what they're talking about when it comes to a police procedural, and having done some minor research into them, I can completely understand why.
However, I personally struggled with it because I found it to be quite a dense novel, and there were a lot of disparate moving parts that I struggled to keep track of.

The beginning of this hooked me in but then it fell flat for me. There's lots of characters and I found it hard to keep track of everything at times. A decent murder mystery. I like that it takes place in Northern Sweden.

Det här är den första boken jag läser av Anki och det kommer garanterat inte att vara den sista. Jag tyckte verkligen om karaktärerna Charlotte och Per. Det var en trevlig omväxling med en bok som utspelar sig uppe i Umeå. Böcker som handlar om droger och lättpåverkade ungdomar är annars inte ett ämne som intresserar mig, men i Snöängeln så blir det en spännande historia som kretsar kring mer än så. Psykisk ohälsa bland annat, ett ämne som jag tycker är så otroligt viktigt och som vi inte ska sluta prata om förrän det finns adekvat hjälp att få för alla som mår mer eller mindre dåligt. Det enda jag skulle klaga på är titeln och omslaget som avslöjade lite väl mycket. Utöver det så gillade jag twisten på slutet, mycket underhållande läsning som jag varmt rekommenderar!

Umea in Northern Sweden is a cold place in winter, a place where the temperature drops and daylight is limited. Stockholm police officer Charlotte von Klint has moved to Umea but her past is following in the shape of a psychopathic gangster who is out to find the person undercutting him in this area. Meanwhile local teenagers are high on a mixture of drink and drugs and the two worlds are about to collide
This is a decent enough Scandi-crime novel (there are few bad ones!) but I did find it a little over the top in parts of the plot. I really loved the focus on bored youth and the way that they are exploited. This is a first novel and I suspect subsequent ones are more assured but it's still gripping for a few hours.

The plot was pretty confusing to follow so I might reread but it was enjoyable. The tense scenes and action were my favourite to read, I couldn’t put down the book once Frida went missing. I’m not really satisfied with the ending being a cliffhanger but that’s just my preference. Overall the characters were good, I’m not used to reading books where the POV changes but it was done well…Per was my favourite, he felt the most relatable and down-to-earth character, every aspect of him is likeable.

Första av totalt tre böcker i serien om Per & Charlotta. Helt okej bok, inget märkvärdigt. Lättläst. Kul att den utspelar sig i Umeå, känner igen många platser. Enkel handling, lätt att hänga med. Lite förutsägbar måste jag medge. Ville ha mer detaljer kring relationer och känslor, nu var det mycket handling. Efter att ha läst Kepler och Pascal Engman böckerna blev denna bok ändå en lite nedgradering. Betyg: 2.5 av 5 ⭐️

this book is really hard to follow and the storyline gets dragged out too much. i didn’t find it interesting until about 200 pages in.. after that, it was a decent read and ended on somewhat of a cliffhanger. however, due to the lack of interest i had in this one, i don’t think ill be reading the next book at all.

This was an interesting read. It grabbed me from the start with a young man's suicide, followed by the murder of a pharmacist and the disappearance of a young girl. The local drug scene is prevalent in the story. I found the way current events and events from Charlotte's past interlinked especially as she has relocated to Umea. What was supposed to be a change of location to a slower pace has turned out to be anything but.

Jag gillar att läsa böcker som utspelar sig i de mer norra delarna. Jag har aldrig varit i Norrbotten, tänker varje gång jag slår igen en bok som utspelar sig där att det är dags att planera in en resa dit. Jag gillar att läsa om miljöerna det är något med dem, det blir så stämningsfullt.
Gillade den här boken, det är en spännande historia som utspelar sig, det händer något hela tiden då handlingen går fort fram och kapitlen är korta. Här tas samhälls aktuella ämnen upp så som droger, psykisk ohälsa och sociala medier.

Per kämpar på med sin diabetes och har det jobbigt på hemmafronten. De är båda riktigt bra poliser men har nu fått ett knepigt fall på halsen. Poliiseillahan täytyy olla jotain erityispiirteitä, että he ovat mielenkiintoisia. Vai? Toinen on rikas aatelinen ja toinen on diabeetikko. Tämä kävi ilmi moneen kertaan kirjan aikana, mutta niillä ei ollut varsinaisesti merkitystä juonen kannalta. Joten lukijana jää ihmettelemään että miksi. Miksi täytyy painottaa toisen rikkautta ja toisen diabetestä? Valinnoilla pitäisi olla merkitystä. Toisekseen tämä huumekauppateema vaikutti jotenkin vain peliliikkeeltä; tarinalle piti antaa jokin kehys.

4.25⭐️ Väldigt kul och intressant att äntligen påbörja denna serie. (Vet fortfarande inte om detta är bok 1 eller 2 i serien då det står olika på olika ställen men..). Tyckte mycket om den, men saknade lite spänning. Iallafall en intressant upplösning och ser fram emot att fortsätta läsa serien.
Ett litet minus för språket, vet inte om detta bara är ett problem i e-boken men upplevde särskrivningar, mellanrum mitt i ord osv på en hel del olika ställen.

Storyn var inte unik men upplevde att boken var välskriven och genomtänkt. Att boken utspelar sig i en bekant miljö gör det hela mycket intressant. Anki lyckas också locka en yngre målgrupp med sitt skrivande! 👌🏻
