Freedom, Love, Monsters #1

Married to the Mahr

Rate this book
He smelled her nightmare miles away and had devour the dreamer capable of such a tantalizing scent...
But at the first taste of her, he knew he would break his centuries-long vow just to ride her chest every night.

Traeyr's favorite thing about being the demon that inspired the word nightmare is traveling the world. His second favorite thing is squeezing through the tightest possible holes to infiltrate his victims' chambers.

When a delicious scent draws him to a sleeper's room miles away, he only meant to imbibe the peculiar nightmare. He can’t explain why he licks the sweat from her brow instead, engorging his shadow power to nearly full mass. On the second night, he laps her tears as well as the nightmare clawing at her dreams.

On the third night, the dreamer wakes . . . and she can see him.

Addison never meant to bind Traeyr to her bedroom. She only wanted one dream that wasn’t a nightmare.

Depressing, boring and incomprehensible

🥀 Depressing

The heroine is all around the most depressing person I've read in a long time.

UGHHHHHHHHHHHH dnf at %45

the writing was bad and the plot? where is it? 👎🏽👎🏽👎🏽 but worst of all the book made me question my beloved demon books!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What he felt for her was more about her smell—well, and her taste—than about her as a woman.

❓❓❓❓ i read many books where he tastes/smells her and falls in love

but like what're they talking about after they get together?????

i don't want to question my beautiful hea books though 😡😡😡😡

also i rarely have nightmares but always know that i'm having a nightmare so if this book cause me a nightmare tonight i'll sue the author for unnecessarily detailed nightmare descriptions😡😡

this book is simply... not very good. it draws you in with seemingly well-written prose, but the further you read, you quickly realize that it's a smokescreen of fancy words attempting to hide just... Not Good writing lol. this book is less than 200 pages and i struggled to get through it. it's not that the words or vocabulary are difficult to parse, but it's just obvious that the author was trying to fill a word quota and wrote sentences in the most convoluted way possible, not just with sentence structures being clunky and nonsensical, but thesaurusing everything under the sun. i wouldn't call it purple prose, but it's verbose in a way that does nothing to serve the story and adds nothing to the writing style except to make it clunky, robotic, and almost encyclopedic with terrible flow.

i understand that it tends to be common practice for ancient/old or inhuman (or, both) beings to have this sense of loftiness to them, which then translates into their inner narrations and pov as we read, not just in their dialogue, but this book presents it in a way that isn't working. at all. it feels incredibly stiff and i struggled to read page after page when it should've been a quick and easy read, considering the length of the book. it dragged on and i was so incredibly bored.

the writing uses pretty words and tries to string them together in interesting ways, but again, it felt stiff and awkwardly executed and didn't flow. the writing felt pretentious and improperly placed, and somehow juvenile all at once. it's verbose and feels lacking in a sense of maturity in that it doesn't really feel as though there's a confident voice in the writing style, and it's grating. it's like it was trying too hard while achieving nothing of substance. there are a lot of odd words tossed in every which way that not only didn't suit the writing style, but felt out of place with the way they were used, which just made it all the more obvious to me that delilah dare was just pulling words out of a thesaurus to sound fancier, because they didn't make sense in the way that they were used.

to get into the book's contents itself, it was just... off. the premise was weird. the mmc was creepy, though i suppose he's meant to be as he's literally a mare/mahr/mara from folklore, but he's presented as a romanticized version of one. he could've been sexy, but it's the writing style and inner voice (or lack thereof) of the book that just ruins him, and the verboseness of the book and thesaurusing out the ass.

spoilers from here on out.

the premise is just weird. like obviously the mcs of a book are supposed to be compelling because they are, you know, the main character, so "she's not like other girls" is unsurprising. traeyr is compelled to addison for her scent and her nightmares and whatever, and is more drawn to her than anyone else, so he keeps going back. i can forgive instalust and mutual sexual attraction, but addison wasn't as fearful for her safety as she should've been lmao, which like that itself isn't criminal so whatever, but my issue is the way the instalust just transforms into baseless and deep romantic love seemingly out of nowhere, because this story happens in what... the span of 2-3 weeks??? and it's not like they really get to know each other. he just stalks her and "rides her chest" (please look up what these things have been depicted as loooool) and like, addison researched mahrs and pulled some bullshit on traeyr that pissed him off, but like... what happens after is just so?? like he just glossed over it and forgave it and then it was just, so odd and offputting. oh and like he gives her a good dream as requested right and like, they barely know each other at this point and this is on the heels of her tricking him, but he shows her intimate memories of his past and she's all sad and sentimental about it even though she... doesn't know what's going on????

also the smut language in this book is some of the most heinous shit i've ever seen. if i took a shot for every time the author said "liquid heat" i'd be fucking blackout drunk. some other choice descriptions are "weeping cunt," "fist-sized balls," "saporous liquid," "undulating crests of pleasure" "A weird thrill ran up her spine as she recalled his male...equipment on her chest" LIKE DUDE IS JUST DICK OUT ON HER TITTIES like be soooo fucking serious LMAO.

oh and then there was "The illness that perforated the soul of the sleeper, allowing a weakness that was easily exploited by hungry ghosts, demons, and wraiths from to steal the dreamer's body and soul for their own" made me fucking have a stroke like???? WHAT? i think "from" was accidentally left in the sentence like... dude the editing failures in this book did not help the glaring issues it already had.

oh right and like when she tricks him right traeyr asks for her wet pussy-slime covered panties and he sniffs and licks them like????????????? and like ok the dude like, doesn't really have a corporeal form unless he gains power from consuming nightmares and whatever, so at one point we get this description:

The tips of two horns swirled upward but dissolved into flickering shadows before reaching their points. The silhouette looked fuzzy, just a collection of billowing haze. His torso was lean and cut but looked more smooth than the rest of him. Her eyes trailed lower to where his male bits were, and she felt a pang of gratitude and disappointment when she saw the contour merely gave way to penumbra.

LIKE dare is trying wayyyyyy too hard to sound fancy and just makes no fucking sense, given the context. gave way to penumbra??? like if the context of the book and that particular scene were of a grander scheme than addison trying to check out traeyr's crotch, it could work, but like i said before, she uses words/phrases that just DON'T fit the situations or premise of the book as a whole and sounds stupid instead of intriguing and provocative.

short books/novellas are capable of being fleshed out and well-developed and compelling in their lore and stories, but this book fell flat. like, really, really flat. there were so many things that just didn't make sense and it felt rushed, and it showed in the odd sentences that lacked editing and formatting errors where things like new lines of dialogue weren't on new lines and meshed together, but you could see the tab where a new paragraph would've been beginning.

idk this book pissed me off and i was going to rate it 2 stars initially but looking at how long this review was and how pissed this book made me got me to knock it down another star.

This was a really lovely story that felt equal parts smut and watching characters heal from past traumas. The writing was really lovely and I really enjoyed both characters.
I didn't love some of the descriptions during the spicy scenes (they just seemed silly like calling her cleavage a valley) and occasionally I felt like the author broke out the thesaurus so her descriptions would be loftier.
I also would gave liked the book to be a bit longer. I still had questions at the end and I thought the binding was a bit rushed.
Overall though this was a fun spicy story.

Traeyr was such an interesting MMC and I liked his dark side. I really wish we’d gotten to understand more about why he was so very intensely drawn to Addison, beyond the lure of her night terrors. Addison was a big ball of trauma responses and had a remarkably soft heart. Their love story was sweet, but the end felt really rushed.

Spice: 4/5

Triggers: night terrors, suffocation, horror elements

(Descriptions found at end of my review)

Should I read in order?
This is the first of Dare’s Freedom, Love, Monsters series.

Basic plot:
Addison is pulled into a new to her world when Traeyr finds her nightmares delicious.

Give this a try if you want:
- contemporary setting
- monster romance
- monster hero / human heroine
- Boston setting
- hero is a mahr
- heroine works at a fish market
- graphic designer heroine
- hero feeds on human nightmares
- shadow daddy
- protective hero
- full figured heroine
- at least 4 steam – I might have missed some

Ages:
- didn’t catch them

First line:
The gaudy blue house with its peeling paint and crooked shutters taunted Addison from the driveway.

My thoughts:
I am sad I struggled with this one! I think part of it was….it was just weird to me lol. Which might be great for others and just a me thing. But I also was feeling like I was waiting forever for the heroine and her to actually be together and interact and that always makes me salty.

I also just wanted a bit more...world building? Like I didn’t really understand this world of monsters. Mahrs would ride peoples chest when they were having nightmares? And sometimes break their bones? So is this Boston but people randomly are dead in their apartments, chests crushed? And how the hero rescues her from a hag or whatever that would have killed her it’s kind of like...expected like this is a common occurrence. I just wanted a bit more understanding of all this PNR activity happening!

I did like the mains okay. But overall I just didn’t get super into this story. I didn’t really love the plot and the mains were separated for so much of the book that I was left wishing for more from them.

If you like your monsters as very non-human, who stay monsterly, this is a book you must read. Essentially, the plot is a woman starts to fall in love with a Mahr, or nightmare demon who loves the taste of her nightmares.

The FMC discusses trauma from the past that is causing her to have these nightmares and ultimately the Mahr strikes a deal with her to help her that evolves into so much more.

It’s dark, sweet, and oh so sexy! And like any proper monster romance comes with a satisfying HEA.

Keep an eye on this author! They are coming out with a two headed dragon story that I can’t wait to sink my teeth into. ❤️🔥

DNF @ 57% and I’m sooo sad about it! I once wrote a fic about a sleep paralysis demon trying to fuck me, so this felt like it was right up my alley, but goddamn was it unbelievably boring! The FMC was awful I wasn’t rooting for her at all, honestly I wanted him to just sit on her chest and crush her and end it there. So much potential, but I couldn’t do it! 😩

Fun and cute read but I feel like the writing was trying to be something that it’s not. I hate when authors purposely try to make their writing more complex and it just results in something that’s hard to read when it doesn’t need to be

I also felt that I could have guessed everything abt the plot before starting the book. I still love the idea tho, think it was a neat and creative overall story arch but could have been done better imo

The characters were kinda flat and I felt they changed personalities throughout the story (and not in a character development way) just like inconsistency. There was also a lot of detail added that was so unnecessary

The ending was so sweet tho 🫶🏼 my heart is so happy

“For millennia, I’ve collected these memories… it has always been for you… I’ve only abated madness to bask in your light.”
Are you kidding😭😭 he’s such a romantic

Him calling her dear dreamer is so cute

“You are too beautiful to cry. I’ll banish the demons that haunt you.”

He said just one night and couldn’t help himself to immediately promise he was coming back night after night.

“I shall bind myself to you in as many ways as you wish, my love.”

“How many more ways can we bind ourselves together”
“Careful, dear dreamer. You don’t know what I’m willing to do”

The butterfly lights and butterfly ring, him still giving her a wedding😭 the standards are high. So so high.

He didn’t wanna be locked up again in a room yet didn’t hesitate to want to do it w her. Knowing he could never travel again except in dreams w her which was the one thing he’s always loved
“I would be satisfied to share with you the beauty I have seen and experience it anew through your eyes”

Could this have been better with a more developed plot? For sure. Were there a few typos and a couple of things that didn’t add up? Yep. But as a quick, short palate cleanser, it’s a fun spicy story with some borderline silliness.

I really really wanted to like this, and I was so excited about the premise. The first 30 pages or so I thought I was having a stroke because I was having so much trouble reading it. Then I realized it was just the way it was written. It was just sentence after sentence of unnecessary large words crammed together in an attempt to emulate “good writing.”
The second I read the words “pink apparatus of orgasms” instead of the word vibrator, I about launched the book across the room.
There was a portion about halfway through that was decent, roughly 20 pages or so that I really enjoyed. I’m sad to say though, everything else just wasn’t for me.

This did not hit as I thought it would. Very underwhelming, the lore was badly explained, and the spice was questionable.

Is Truer a tiny elf on Addison during their spicy time? Because I just could not take that visual seriously.

The whole lore is just super weird and vague. The pots weren’t interesting. The personal drama was barely necessary. I don’t know if we needed more or less information for the story to work.

Just disappointed overall. Might give another book a shot but the writing style didn’t impress me either.

I really enjoyed the idea of this book and the folklore behind it . My only problem was that I wish there was more to it. Also some of the wording was a bit overkill in my opinion . But it was a cute quick read that I enjoyed .

Our main female character just moved to a new town , her boyfriend recently left her right before she moved into a new house with crazy expensive bills that has her stressing out as to how she’s going to be able to afford this new place on her own .

With all this new stress it brings out her old ptsd from her past leaving her with crazy night terrors.

Mehr are demon creatures who feed of night mares and when he finds Addison her nightmares are the sweetest he’s ever encountered.

If you enjoy :

Definitely give this book a shot

I loved this book. But I don't think it's for everyone. As someone who shares trauma with Addy, I found this book endearing and it reminded me heavily of myself. And also that love is deeper than darkness. I saw another review talking about how they didn't think Traeyr loved Addison and it was purely about her sating his hungers. I understand where that comes from but he was also terrified of being trapped by a mortal because of his love of traveling. That causes a lot of denial in the way he felt about her in the beginning.

2.5, reluctantly round up.

I wanted to like this—I really did. It has a decent kernel of an idea. Unfortunately, it is clumsily executed, superfluously written (that's a hint at the writing style), and poorly edited. I liked the character archetypes the author was aiming for, but she didn't actually manage to capture them. There is sex, but it's bland and repetitive. There are hints at an interesting world of supernaturals. Unfortunately, hints are all you ever get.

All in all, this was a failure for me. It feels like early work. So, maybe the author will improve with time.

uhm interesting

I’m not sure why I finished. It was so short and quick, so why not?

I’m not a stranger to monster smut or love stories, so that didn’t throw me off. Just, the writing and story felt rushed and not well developed. The characters were random and major problems were introduced only to be quickly forgotten or resolved.

It felt like a teenager’s first go at a watt pad story.

I genuinely loved this book, idk some of the reviews shocked me because for a shorter story, I felt like it was pretty well written! Please give it a chance and don’t let the reviews deter you!

One thing that I appreciated so much was the fmc having debilitating nightmares due to her trauma. I am someone who went through a traumatic even a few years ago and have struggled with ptsd and recurring nightmares that could only be described as soul crushing. NOW I did not have a lovely demon to soothe my sleep (I went for the more traditional route of three types of medication and my amazing therapist) but let me tell you it was extremely bittersweet to live through the lens of Addison in this story. The way Traeyr truly wanted to help Addison through her trauma in order to relieve the pain of her nightmares was extremely charming and even though you can argue that his only attraction to her was because of her smell, I personally believe he was drawn to her because he felt needed by her and was given a purpose after centuries of traversing the earth forced to endure his demonic needs day after day. For everyone saying that Addison was an annoying fmc, I really have to stop you there and challenge you because yes people who have depression and mental illness can often be seen by others as “annoying” simply because they are struggling. She is not your typical badass fmc with a personality made of sunshine and rainbows. Literally my only criticism with this story is that it isn’t longer because I would have loved to explore Traeyr’s backstory more as well with a bit more world building to explore the themes of entities, spirituality, and the astral realms of sleep. But anyways, please give this a chance especially if you have struggled with similar things that the fmc struggles with because this was very therapeutic for me even if it made me a little sad that I could not have my own demon to soothe my nightmares 😂 idk maybe I’ll summon one or something haha. Cannot wait to purchase a physical copy of the book soon so I can add it to my collection! Thank you author!

I am not sure what to say about this book that hasn't already been said... I'm disappointed, to say the least. I wanted to love it since it it was purchased from the author directly, and it came with some pretty artwork. I just can't. Spoilers ahead.

The main character is so... sad. I think this was meant to be some kind of healing journey for her, but... where was the healing part? Where was the plot for that matter? It's missing so much.

The beginning was slow and dreary. It took me about a week to read the first chapter. I couldn't stay focused because of how pathetic she is in the beginning. If you've got any triggers, don't even bother with this one. You're sure to set yourself off with something.

Suddenly, this sad girl goes from being all alone and pathetic to boinking a nightmare eating demon in her dreams while he "rides her chest" in the real world just because she saw his massive boner and decided... yes, forget all human men they are scum. I'll just go boink this fluffy demon thing with a peen so big it will be protruding from my stomach and defying all laws of anatomy in the next chapter.

After their spicy scenes, he gives her happy dreams to beat back her night terrors. Suddenly, they're in love and married by the end, and you're over here wondering how it snowballed into that ending because you blinked. To sum it up, she got laid by a demon, and that event magically gave her the confidence to move on with her life after being ghosted by the last dude. She also has massive tits and a big round booty, which seem to be a major selling point for the demon who enjoys tight holes. Whomp whomp.

The only reason to read this book is if you really want to read a few back to back spicy scenes... but even then, it felt so awkward. I think this was meant for furries.

🖤 “I could be anywhere, as long as we are together.”
~~~
Addison has been through a lot. Since she was young, she’s been having terrible nightmares due to everything that has happened in her past. And now, after her ex-boyfriend left her, she’s stuck in a new town, living alone in a huge house and having tons of bills to pay. But, despite everything she’s been through, she’s such a strong and courageous woman. Even more, I loved that she didn’t back down easily from all the challenges thrown her way. And she’s quite feisty, too. I liked her very much!
Traeyr is a sleep paralysis demon who feeds on other’s dreams and nightmares. He’s huge, powerful, dangerous and quite possessive. But there is more to him than meets the eye. Because the Mahr is also affectionate, sweet and fiercely protective and I loved him so much!
I loved everything that happened between Addison and Traeyr! He’s been hunting the globe for centuries until he stumbles upon the delicious scent of Addison’s nightmares. And from that moment on, he couldn’t stay away from her even if he tried his best. I loved those two together! And I loved how they helped each other heal from the past trauma in their lives. Even more, I really enjoyed witnessing Traeyr fall in love with his dreamer and all the time they spent together. And when they couldn’t resist the undeniable attraction, the passionate moments they shared were hot. Oh, the things a Mahr could do with the dark shadows he controls… I loved every moment of it!
Overall, the story is a great start of the series and I really enjoyed every page of it!
I started this book the day i got it because of the promising spicy monster romance. Honestly i loved it, though there was barely a plot but i did come for the romance not the drama so it didn't bother me. Treyar and Addison are such a cute couple, i was stressed before i read this and when i finished it i was giggly and kicking my feet.
I also loved the representation of her traumas, but man it felt like a kick to the gut every time her nightmares were depicted. i was nearly crying over what happened to her, and i love the validation for her in the book. and when i say there was no plot i didn't mean it wasn't interesting (i literally couldn't put the book down) i just meant that there was a lot the author could have done to make the plot more, like what more of her background was and maybe going more in depth with Treyar, but it is only a novella so i didn't expect much of a fleshed out plot. Besides i was reading trying to get de-stressed so the less plot and the more spice the better.
I also loved the reference to our collective disappointment that the beast from the beauty and the beast, didn't stay as the beast. like c'mon at least let him be a rugged middle aged dilf, i can still remember being so disappointed. Anyways i loved this book, however it could have been better. I am absolutely excited to read the rest of Delilah Dares books, she is now one of my favorite authors.
Oh my demonic goodness!
This has some triggers that are offpage but still important andnot any less intense. Be sure to check before diving in.
Addison moved from her Florida life to be with her boyfriend, only to be dumped and left with the year contract for the rental home. With a slimy boss and night terrors from a traumatic past, our girl is running on fumes.
Traeyr is anything but gentle when he invades and entices nightmares in his prey's deep sleep. During a typical numb existing feed, he feels a pull from an unknown dreamer that makes him curious and infatuated. With his own cursed past, Traeyr tries to stay away, but when her life and soul are in danger, he is unwilling to let anyone claim his Dreamer.
Things I loved:
I couldn't stop reading this because Addison and Traeyr are freaking too cute and perfect for each other. Their chemistry and communication is on 🔥
Addison's friend Marissa may not have had as much focus on her, but she was supportive every time she showed up and I am here for that!
Traeyr's back story and the legend behind his demonic being was a loss for words in a great way.
Things I didn't like:
This not being long enough! I really craved more time with this couple and I am looking forward to reading another book of Delilah Dare's
So this one for me had some good bits some bits that where a little 'meh'.
I also couldn't picture him sitting on her chest as he was described as a large being but also could change into a butterfly, so how big /what form was he when he was on her chest ? I mean if I'd got a bit of smutty art to show me, it might have helped I just couldn't picture anything bigger than a dog being able to sit on her chest- sorry if that image ruins it for anyone.
We have a trouble FMC who has been left in a really shitty situation by her scumbag ex, the stress brings back her really bad night terrors. The MAHR feeds from her night terrors to gain power. He also learns he can feed off not just the terrors 😉.
The FMC learns to grown and heal from past trauma with great rep of therapy. A shitty ex and now a HEA with most of her wishes out of her wish jar coming ture.
We have a quick smutty read.
But as always, check your TW and remember we are reading fiction about non-humans. So if the TW's are not your cup of tea move on, dont complain about it, theres hundreds of books out there and so few for us monster fudgers.. Enjoy 😉
