Great Reference Tool for Those Unfamiliar with Apple Products ...
This book was reviewed as part of Amazon's Vine program which included a free advance copy of the book.
Before I bought my iPad2, I had no prior experience with Apple products (never played with a Mac, iPod or iPhone) ... I'm a strict "PC guy". So, imagine how I felt when I opened the somewhat thick box that housed my sleek, razor thin, black iPad2 only to discover it was accompanied by a multi-lingual warranty pamphlet, a USB connector, a wall plug and an Apple logo sticker ... nothing else. Uh oh. I didn't know what to do with the thing ... it had one button on the front that I kept pressing and nothing happened. I eventually had to go to the internet just to figure out how to turn the darn thing on. Being a PC user has trained me to EXPECT several thick manuals to accompany even the most insignificant computer part, whereas Apple forced me to incorporate common-sense and trust their product. So, does a book like USING IPAD2 really help? Yes, absolutely, but the degree of its benefit all depends on the iPad user.
As I stated previously, I didn't initially know what to do with my iPad2, but looking back, that was probably the most fun part of getting the thing in the first place ... exploring this wonderful gadget's bells and whistles on my own, but never venturing out of my PC realm of thinking. So, when my iPad froze for the first time, I was back on the internet looking for Apple's version of CTRL-ALT-DEL. What USING THE IPAD 2 provides is a go-to resource to not only learn about bells and whistles that you may not know about, but to make better use of the functions you may already be using. Contrary to the book's exclusive-sounding title, it serves as a guide for both the iPad and the iPad2.
Bud Smith lays out the iPad basics in a manner similar to the "Dummies" series of books, but in a smaller, more compact form. Starting with an introduction to the device and explaining virtually every pre-loaded function on the tablet, USING THE IPAD 2 is something a PC-minded person would expect to be packed in the iPad's box. It is a handy guide that not only explains things, but offers shortcuts to those who may be using the functions less efficiently (like me using "Windows XP logic" on the much more streamlined Apple iPad engine). Adequately illustrated and easy-to-follow instructions, the book should prove to be a handy reference for anyone overwhelmed by the iPad's abilities or unfamiliar with the idiosyncrasies associated with Apple products. On the other hand, more experienced users will find the book as a rehash of familiar territory with no new ground being covered. The key to the effectiveness of this book is totally depends on the needs of the iPad user.
