"Another sparkling feel-good romance, brimming with perfect doses of heart and heat!"-- Bethany Turner, award-winning author of The Do-Over

Gemma Bennett is the leading lady of her own life, and her true love is writing screenplays. With her trusty pink notebook in hand, she signs up for the Citizen’s Safety Academy to research her newest blockbuster hope, a rom-com with a police officer as the hero. And the fact that the handsome and heroic Lieutenant Karson Zellner is the one leading the training? Well, who can blame her for wanting to spend evenings with the man she swooned over months ago when he responded to a call at her apartment?

Karson already has his fair share of problems before Gemma shows up, and he's not exactly a fan of the ditzy blonde who can’t seem to stay out of trouble. The last thing he needs is a damsel in distress to rescue; there are plenty of people in real need of his help. The fact that she seems to think his job makes him a superhero is just one more strike against her. This isn't a movie, and he feels like the furthest thing from a leading man.

Gemma can't seem to stop doing the worst, most embarrassing things at just the wrong time. And as time goes on, Gemma begins to realize that the scripts for a perfect screenplay and a real-life happily-ever-after are two very different things. Can she step out of her own way to find the hero her story needs?

Book two in a series, HERO DEBUT, by Angela Ruth Strong, is easily read as a standalone novel. It’s a romcom, for sure, that borders on zany with references to faith and a few scripture verses for punctuation.

Gemma, the main female character, is an identical twin. Strong decided to use the biblical characters of Jacob & Esau as counterpoints in this story. They’re referred to nine times; too much, imo. What I also found too much was the inability of Gemma to settle down. This is a woman in her 30’s, a teacher, trying to be taken seriously as a playwright but she’s acting like a 12 year old with ADHD and no medication. Cute can only get you so far…

Her love interest, Karson, is a cop who’s had a rough life. He’s wounded but handsome, of course. Fortunately, he is more in keeping with a character at this age, job and development by the author. Their relationship was tough for me to get behind due to Gemma’s often immature and outlandish behavior. She certainly has a group of tolerant and supportive friends surrounding her.

Strong doesn’t use secondary characters to the best advantage of the story. Gemma’s twin, her roommates, Karson’s ex, the other cops and firefighters - so many missed opportunities. The few scenes with Gemma’s twin and the one with Karson’s ex were the best in the book and did the most to advance the story and the growth of the characters. We needed more scenes like this. They didn’t need to be long and drawn out like a drama but all the zany needed tempering.

If we were able to give half stars, I might have given this book a 3.5 rating, awarding the extra half point for the huge collection of HERO quotes at the beginning of each chapter. Who knew so many contemporary famous folks had things to say about heroes 📚

Even better than Husband Auditions, Hero Debut is a witty and whimsical look at turning one's crush into something more mature--and Strong does it in such a great way.

Gemma and Karson are really two halves of the same problem, but it all manifests in different ways. In particular, I love Gemma's conflicting personality. She's insecure about being compared to others, but she's also extremely comfortable in her own skin. I like that juxtaposition because it reflects humanity so well.

Laugh-out-loud antics on nearly every page, thought-provoking faith elements that stay with you after the book closes... what more could you ask for except for maybe book three? Oh, wait. She's already got that coming. YAY!

"If laughter is the best medicine, then jokes are the Band-Aids."

How is it possible that I have not read a full-length novel by Angela Ruth Strong until now? I need to gobble up all of her backlist and be on the look out for her future works; this book has made me a devoted follower. Every chapter had me crying tears of mirth but the latter chapters also had me crying tears of heartache. With surprising depth and meaning, this story of Gemma and Karson is quite poignant and thought-provoking in addition to being hilarious and witty. I loved the pop culture references to movies and enjoyed all the quotes about heroes ranging from Rick Riordan to Fred Rogers to Eleanor Roosevelt to Bob Dylan. The faith thread blossomed and grew throughout the story and the main characters' growth was satisfying, particularly with Karson. If you love romcoms, you will absolutely adore this book.

Gemma was flighty but so funny, sweet, intuitive, curious, bubbly and endearing as the sunshiny heroine. She is definitely not perfect, as she carries lots of insecurities of comparing herself to her twin, but she was absolutely lovable and believable as high school English teacher and part time screenwriter. Karson was the cynical, overly cautious, bitter, and angry police officer but his dry sense of humor and his devoted love and loyalty to his family made up for his grumpiness. They must overcome jealousy, envy, and unhealthy anger as they battle their pasts. But as they do so, they give us a wonderful picture of what reconciliation and renewal looks like.

There was so much to enjoy throughout the pages of this book. Humor, romance, flawed characters, relationships that are strengthened and mended. Plus, beautiful faith elements. It was also such a treat to get to a glimpse at characters from the first book in the series, Husband Auditions. Lovers of inspy romcoms will eat this book up.

Loved it! Even more than Husband Auditions. I loved the main characters and the deeper themes of envy and feeling less than were handled really well. I loved the banter and the storyline was great. I could definetely see this book as a movie.

What a pleasure of a book! I heard about this new to me author with her name standing out as one not afraid to/ includes spiritual elements within her stories so I decided to check out hers and support by buying.

There were many laughable moments as well as deeper aspects as the characters grew, reconciliation, and forgiveness included. There were likeable while kind of quirky ones too. It was all wholesome but also had faith /gospel elements included which is what I look for and was impressed with so that I can gladly recommend this author as well as I won't mind reading more by her either!

I have been (im)patiently waiting for this book ever since I closed the last page of Husband Auditions. I just KNEW there would be a fabulous story between Gemma and the policeman who captured her imagination and the beginnings of her heart in an absolutely classic scene from that book (IYKYK). And I am quite happy to report that I was right! (By the way, if you haven’t read Husband Auditions, you can read Hero Debut as a standalone but I highly recommend you go back and read it at some point because it’s SO fun!)

Their grumpy-sunshine relationship is highlighted masterfully in the alternating perspectives between Gemma and Karson, that delicious pull back and forth as attraction deepens… much to her delight & his consternation. And hold on to your bonnets because there’s a doozy of a first kiss that had me searching out a backup oxygen supply. Wowza. Still. Fanning. In fact, there are all sorts of memorable moments in Hero Debut – some that made me laugh out loud (I’m looking at you, certain running joke that comes full circle in the end), some that tugged at my heart, and some that were just purely entertaining in multiple ways.

Gemma is a delightful heroine – imaginative, romantic, creative, head in her stories, heart on her sleeve. And yet, there’s a lot more to Gemma than the above descriptors. She’s much more layered and insightful than perhaps I’d given her credit for being, and she has a few surprises in store for Karson and for readers, too. Karson is super swoony (duh), and I’m shallow enough to admit that I drooled a little bit right along with Gemma when he was in uniform but even more when he was dressed casually. Whew. But, just like Gemma, there’s more to him than meets the eye, and that intersection of their individual wounds – and respective healing – takes this story beyond ‘just’ a hilarious read (though it’s certainly and wonderfully that) into something that can impact our own hearts too.

Bottom Line: Hero Debut is another thoughtful, endearing, hysterical, and swoony story from Angela Ruth Strong. Gemma’s misadventures would make Ramona Quimby proud and, combined with Karson’s begrudging amusement, are tons of fun to read. The banter, the simmering attraction, the good-natured ribbing and antics of Gemma’s roommates and Karson’s colleagues, all of it is classic romcom gold. But, just like all the best stories, it seamlessly leads readers to deeper insight, too. The emotional issues that Gemma and Karson each battle – the insecurities, the anger, the betrayal, the self-built walls – add dimension that sharpens the edges of their budding relationship and leave readers with more to think about than just a few swoonilicious kisses. Though… y’all… not kidding about the toe-curling nature of those! I smiled from beginning to end, and I can’t wait to read Charlie’s story next!

HERO DEBUT is a fun inspirational romantic comedy about a girl with dreams and the cop she has a crush on. It's about baggage, vulnerability and being willing to change so that you can be open to love. It's about family, both found and blood. It's about self development. All of that wrapped up in delightful situations and great characters with plenty of humor and chemistry. Definitely a book to grab if you enjoy romcoms.

This is the second time I've read this author's work. It's also the second in the series, but you don't need to read the first book at all to understand and enjoy this one. At first I wasn't sure about Gemma. She's pretty flighty and she lets her sister run over her and criticize her all the time. That ties into who she is though and her past baggage. Karson I liked right away. He's got a pretty crusty exterior, but also a sense of humor and he's an overall great guy. They both have issues they have to work through and so there's quite a bit of character development. I didn't like how Gemma handles some things, but it all works out. The ending drags a bit, but then when it finally arrives it's fun and a good fit for the story. I'm not a big fan on really long speeches, which is there, but otherwise it's a pretty perfect ending. Full of laughs and some swooning.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was a really fun read! The inspirational elements weren't too strong and worked for this story. The characters were likable with good character development. There were all the feels with a sweet ending.

Hero Debut is the second book of the Love Off Script series. In Husband Auditions, we were introduced to the main characters of this novel, but it can easily be read as a stand-alone novel.

"Oh, I'm so sorry. I ruined our romantic moment."

I love Gemma's friendship with Kai and Charlie and enjoyed seeing it continue to flourish in this novel. While Husband Auditions was Kai's story, Hero Debut is Gemma's.

I appreciated the way that the author alternated the point of view between Gemma and Karson. By doing this, you get to know both characters well. While this story had a lot of fluff, it also had some unexpected deep themes. There is so much to process.

Each chapter begins with sage quotes, mostly about heroes. There are unexpected LOL moments, poignant moments, heavy moments, and the story just pulled on my heartstrings.

Gemma is an enigma. She is flighty and spacey when she gets a story idea, so much so that she loses all track of time. Since that is the Gemma we see most, it was weird seeing her get philosophical and deep and talk about angry kisses.

Karson is hard on the outside and mushy on the inside. Anger is his defense mechanism, and he wears it well. Unfortunately, he doesn't have a hope or prayer of holding onto it once Gemma enters his life.

I am not doing a good job of expressing my thoughts. Overall, I enjoyed the book, I just wasn't expecting to need extra processing time with the story. I am looking forward to reading Charlie's story (I hope it's Charlie's story) in Fiance' Finale, the third book in the Love Off Script series.

Thank you to JustReads Publicity, Net Galley, and the author for the opportunity to read this book. I was not required to provide a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I have been looking forward to this story since book one, Husband Auditions! That was my "book of the year" in 2021!! This book lived up to its predecessor and I loved it!!

We meet all of the main characters in the first book: Charlie, Kai, Gemma, and officer Karson. Karson had been called in to "save" Gemma, who actually didn't need saving. Now, she's doing research for her screenplay where Karson is her hero.

To say that this story is only hilarious would be to take away the incredibly powerful and deep parts of this story. The author has this innate ability to make us laugh hysterically and then dropping a strong truth right in the middle of it. One that makes us stand back and think deeply. There's a deeper message on how others perceive us, forgiveness, reconciliation, and a strong faith message.

Gemma, that poor girl. So many times I wanted to wrap my arms around her and tell her she's loved. Not for how she looks or anything she's done (or hasn't done), simply because she's fearfully and wonderfully made. I loved, loved, loved her insight to Karson (with her evil twin's help). Don't even get me started on Jewel! hahahaha

Kai and Charlie add so much comic relief to the story, I really appreciated them being in this one as well. The mishaps that Gemma finds herself in are hilarious, but you can sort of see why Karson looks at her with a side eye and not much appreciation.

This will absolutely be one of my top books of the year! Now, for Charlie's story...

Angela Ruth Strong wrote another amazing read with the perfect balance of romance, comedy, and gospel truth. You will love this romcom story of a screenwriter with a penchant for getting into trouble and a police officer. Both of them have wounds from the past, but will they let their wounds keep them apart from each other? I absolutely loved, loved Hero Debut, especially the ending. If you enjoyed Husband Auditions, you will love Gemma and Karson's story in Hero Debut.

I had a lot of fun reading this super cute romantic comedy. I thought it was original, witty, inspirational, and romantic. I missed the first book in the series but didn't feel left out at all. This could be a stand-alone book. I enjoyed this so much, and I'll be reading the first one in the series very soon. I highly recommend this book to all rom-com lovers. It was a true delight to read.

Gemma Bennet has her eyes on her hero. Police lieutenant Karson Zellner has captured her fancy since the moment he burst into her home under the mistaken impression that she was being held captive against her will. No, Gemma hadn't been kidnapped—she'd been doing research for a scene in the screenplay she was writing. Now she believes Karson is the perfect muse for her new police-centric romantic comedy.

When Gemma signs up for the Citizen's Safety Academy, which just so happens to be led by Lt. Karson Zellner, her own life turns into a comedy of errors. How many ways can she fall into trouble? And how can she help Karson fall in love—with her?

Karson knows a bad thing when he sees it, and Gemma Bennet is a very bad thing. At least for his bruised and well-protected heart. She's only interested in her image and in making the right impressions. But he can't help being attracted, and as they spend more time together he realizes he might be wrong about her. There might be much more to Gemma than the beauty that meets the eye.

This story made me laugh out loud and totally fall for Gemma and Karson. I love stories that are funny but also hold a rich depth, and Hero Debut definitely challenges the reader to look below the surface and examine their own lives for areas where they need healing and growth. I also truly enjoyed catching up with characters from Husband Auditions , and that helped their own story feel more complete.

If you enjoy romantic comedies with faith themes, Hero Debut is the book for you!

Hero Debut is the second book in the Love Off Script series. While we were introduced to many of the characters in this book in the previous, I think it could definitely be read as a standalone as well. I had personally read the first around two years ago, so my memories of it were fuzzy at best, and I found it didn't impact my enjoyment of this one at all.

And oh, how I enjoyed it! As I said, my memory of the first book is vague so I didn't actually remember Gemma and Karson's initial meeting... which may have made it even better because I could laugh about it just as much the second time around! I won't repeat it so as not to spoil anything, but oh my goodness... it's so good and not one I'll be forgetting again! Since that initial meeting, Gemma has been borderline stalkerish, while Karson wants absolutely nothing to do with her. When she signs up for a citizen's safety course he is teaching... oh, let the laughs and the banter begin! I absolutely could not stop smiling at all the perfect RomCom-y moments throughout this story! The humor was done absolutely wonderfully!

And while I definitely love the humor that romantic comedies provide, I love it even more when it's balanced well with real life issues... and this one truly had just the right blend. Both Gemma and Karson had their baggage they needed to work out, and I really appreciated watching their growth throughout the story. There's a lot of talk about comparison and holding on to anger and hurt, which I think many readers are going to relate to as well. The story is definitely very pro-police but I like that it didn't really glamourize the job either and even poked fun at the unrealistic portrayals of rescue workers in film/TV... because no one ever gets rescued by a shirtless hero... right? There were also several Bible references mentioned throughout that really brought another great layer to this story. Yes, the humor might be what drew me in... but it is all those additional layers and how beautifully it all balanced out that made this one that's going to stand out... and I loved absolutely every single minute.

A vibrant rom-com, full of witty dialogue, faith, friendship, with a sunshine-grumpy romance!

Aspiring screenwriter Gemma Bennett takes a Citizen's Safety class to learn more for her writing project, as well as take advantage of a chance to get close to a certain handsome cop. Gemma is used to be not being taken seriously due to her looks, she is actually quite talented. I admired her unflagging determination and enthusiasm. My favorite parts had to be the scene between her and Karson, the banter and body language between them crackles with energy and insight, plus all the humorous misunderstandings that tends to take place when they are together.

Karson is the perfect brooding-hero-with-a-heart-of-gold, he is determined to not have his head turned by Gemma, but with each of their interactions can't help but let some of his armor slip. I also really liked his family and his nephew, Philip.

A feel-good romance, with great relationship building, full of humor, faith, and heart. I adored each of the little quotes prefacing each chapter, I wanted to clip them out and cross stitch them on a sample because they were so perfect for the story and also just in general. A stand out contemporary romance that brought me through a full range of emotions with its heroic protagonists, highly recommend!

I went into this book with high hopes, and Angela Ruth Strong did not disappoint! After reading Husband Auditions, I couldn't wait to see what would happen in Gemma's story. There's nothing like a feel-good story that has a deeper meaning. The longer I read, the more I loved Gemma's character. Karson--like so many others in her life--sees Gemma as the cliche "blonde airhead" and he's not about to get roped into her schemes. You might go into this story expecting a light and fluffy rom-com, but you're in for a spectacular treat. Like Gemma, this story has a depth you might not see coming. Be wary of categorizing people based on your preconceived notions. I thoroughly enjoyed the engaging plot and rooted for Gemma and Karson from page one. I enjoyed this story! Gemma is a little over the top in how she views Karson, but I think that the lessons she learns through the course of the story is something that a lot of us can relate to. I love that her screen plays have a deeper message to them! This is a fun, enjoyable story with some great themes. The author does a great job of tackling some difficult themes, with Karson being a police officer and the trouble that Portland has had, as well as the characters working through anger and struggling with comparison. How things were out with the struggle with comparing was especially applicable to me. While it works as a stand alone story, I recommend reading The Husband Auditions first, since Gemma is in that book.

It's always refreshing to hear Angela Ruth Strong's voice in her novels! There's always a hint of something joyful and irrepressible that bubbles through...even when her characters are navigating rough paths. In Hero Debut, dual protagonists Gemma (teacher/author/screenwriter) and Karson (police officer/Citizens' Safety Academy instructor) share the limelight with...each other! Gemma is taking the "What it's like to be a cop" class, along with her roommates Charlie and Kai, to pick up ideas for a short film that the trio plans to make (and maybe for a book of her own). There's so much that they don't know about police work, and they're hoping that this will add some authenticity to their film.

Gemma's tendency to wander off in her brain with story ideas irritates Karson, who's trying to run his class safely and on time. (Plus, they've met already in a quite...unusual manner; and he doesn't quite trust her. Especially when she reminds him of someone he'd rather not remember.) However, there are definitely sparks flying. But will their own hurts from the past keep them from investigating what might become their own sweet love story?

Hero Debut is another joyful read from author Strong! While it's delightful and full of neat movie ideas, it also explores the pain from the past that can keep humans from moving forward. Wonderful!

Hero Debut is the second book in the Love Off the Script series. While you are introduced to these characters in the first book, if you happen to pick this book up first you will be fine. I think this could be read as a somewhat stand alone especially since the focus is on Gemma and Karson.

The way this author writes its interesting and unique. I feel like I am inside these characters heads and their thought process as they are going through the story. Gemma and Karson's point of views are alternated through the chapters so you really get to know them.

Although there are plenty of comical moments in the story there are also some deep themes within these characters. There is a lot going on with them and you truly see their development throughout. There are moments that will make you stop and ponder. I will definitely resonate with some more than others.

Overall I enjoyed the story there were some parts that were a bit slow for me but I did appreciate the faith element throughout the story. It wasn't in your face but definitely you can tell that the themes of reconciliation, forgiveness and faith flow throughout the story.

Hilarious and yet also thought provoking.
Sweet and romantic, the perfect blend.
This is the second book in the series, and the main characters are introduced in the first book, Husband Auditions (also a humorous read). But this story can be read as a stand alone quite well.

Gemma is a complex person. Bubbly and flighty, but then she turns philosophical at times. She feels things deeply, and one of her primary struggles is the fact that she has also compared herself to her twin sister.
Gemma really likes Karson, the stern, angry policeman. And Karson is determined to not like Gemma. She's everything he's trying to steer clear of. His anger is the result of past deep hurts.

I liked their banter. I enjoyed watching their relationship grow.
This was a mostly light hearted read, but there are also some aspects that might make you stop and think deeply.

"...the best romantic comedies have depth and meaning that make the humor poignant." That’s a quote from the book and fits Hero Debut to a T! It has all the emotions. I laughed, cried, laughed until I cried, and cried until I laughed. Also, wow, the beautiful truth nuggets are on full display! I was uncomfortable with the intensity of the one kissing scene, but that's just me disliking romance scenes; it's totally a clean book with zero steam/spice. But clear the calendar; if you're like me, you won't be able to put it down once you start reading. I say all this as a reader who doesn’t much like contemporary romance, and generally detests first person present tense POV - which I didn’t even NOTICE in this book (that’s how excellent the writing is) until page 170!

LOVED Hero Debut by author Angela Ruth Strong! Entertaining, funny, and sweet with some beautiful moments of reflection.

Gemma Bennet's great career love is writing screenplays. With romance. She takes a Citizen's Safety Academy class for research. She's had a crush on the instructor since Lt Karson Zellner reacted to a call at her home. He's not a fan of this ditzy blonde and her ditzy ways that land her in trouble often.

"I am literally being carried to safety by a man without a shirt. The very man who lectured me on ever writing a scene with this kind of rescue."

I enjoyed every minute of it!

“He’d become my hero when he came to my house to protect me…Is what brought him to me also going to separate us?”

Strong knocks it out of the park with Hero Debut!! The sequel to her popular rom-com Husband Auditions, this novel tells the tale of Barbie-like Gemma Bennet. Gemma enters Citizen’s Safety Academy looking for her screenplay hero, but she learns a lot in her disappointing search. Will her hero eventually emerge? Will she be prepared, or will they both cling to baggage of their perceived emotional pasts that threatens to draw the curtain early? I loved the title with its double entendre.

Written in 1st person POV, alternating mostly between Gemma and Karson Zeller, we traipse through a few weeks in the happy, but incident-prone life of Gemma. You’ll laugh uproariously all the
way through this faith-based rom-com that delivers serious truths. You will benefit from the lessons, whether single or married for many years.

Chock-full of quotes I will remember for a long time and pop references aplenty, I appreciated Strong’s outlook on life and even the rom-com category. She set the bar high for herself, then exceeded it, “Because the best romantic comedies have depth and meaning that make the humor poignant.”

I loved that Strong shows us that even the protagonists we are rooting for, are not perfect. Perceptions of the past affect relationships, and two people going through the same event can experience it differently. Bravo for pointing that out!

Gemma’s roommates Kai and Charlie are present as a great foil, as are some special children. Then there’s Karson’s jovial former partner, Drew Harris. “He’s his own spotlight.”

I can’t wait for Charlie’s story, coming next as Fiancé Finale!

I received a copy of this book from the publisher. I also received an ebook copy via NetGalley. Plus I pre-ordered my own copy to give away. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.

Notable Quotables:

“If you’re going to write about police, don’t romanticize our job. We give out tickets, we arrest people, and we use our firearms when needed. We’re the ones who show up after a crime has been committed. Nobody wants to see us. Though we risk our lives to protect the public, they often attack us for doing our jobs.”

“We find what we look for... And I prefer to look for the beauty and joy in life. It’s out there.”

“There are three types of people in this world. Sheep, wolves, and sheepdogs.”

“Her eyes are on me, scratching the itch of my heart.”

“Nobody is a hero all the time. We’re just all in training.”

“I don’t know if you believe in God, but His love is the only perfect love. It’s the kind that redeems when the love we’d hoped to get from other people lets us down.”

“I’ve never been in this much trouble before. I make Ramona the Pest look good.”

“I really like this thing called gratefulness. It not only helps us endure situations we never would have planned for ourselves, but it enables us to turn our sorrows into joy.”
