George Raymond Richard "R.R." Martin was born September 20, 1948, in Bayonne, New Jersey. His father was Raymond Collins Martin, a longshoreman, and his mother was Margaret Brady Martin. He has two sisters, Darleen Martin Lapinski and Janet Martin Patten.
Martin attended Mary Jane Donohoe School and Marist High School. He began writing very young, selling monster stories to other neighborhood children for pennies, dramatic readings included. Later he became a comic book fan and collector in high school, and began to write fiction for comic fanzines (amateur fan magazines). Martin's first professional sale was made in 1970 at age 21: The Hero, sold to Galaxy, published in February, 1971 issue. Other sales followed.
In 1970 Martin received a B.S. in Journalism from Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, graduating summa cum laude. He went on to complete a M.S. in Journalism in 1971, also from Northwestern.
As a conscientious objector, Martin did alternative service 1972-1974 with VISTA, attached to Cook County Legal Assistance Foundation. He also directed chess tournaments for the Continental Chess Association from 1973-1976, and was a Journalism instructor at Clarke College, Dubuque, Iowa, from 1976-1978. He wrote part-time throughout the 1970s while working as a VISTA Volunteer, chess director, and teacher.
In 1975 he married Gale Burnick. They divorced in 1979, with no children. Martin became a full-time writer in 1979. He was writer-in-residence at Clarke College from 1978-79.
Moving on to Hollywood, Martin signed on as a story editor for Twilight Zone at CBS Television in 1986. In 1987 Martin became an Executive Story Consultant for Beauty and the Beast at CBS. In 1988 he became a Producer for Beauty and the Beast, then in 1989 moved up to Co-Supervising Producer. He was Executive Producer for Doorways, a pilot which he wrote for Columbia Pictures Television, which was filmed during 1992-93.
Martin's present home is Santa Fe, New Mexico. He is a member of Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America (he was South-Central Regional Director 1977-1979, and Vice President 1996-1998), and of Writers' Guild of America, West.
Wow. George R.R. Martin's A Storm of Swords, the third installment in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, is a literary masterclass in tension, heartbreak, and jaw-dropping twists. If you thought the previous books were intense, this one cranks everything up to an 11.
The sheer scope of this novel is staggering, but it never feels bloated. Martin juggles a staggering number of characters and plots, each one compelling in its own right. The War of the Five Kings reaches new heights of chaos and destruction, but it's not just the battles that grip you—it's the consequences and the deeply personal toll they take.
Let’s talk about those moments: the Red Wedding, the Purple Wedding, and the reveal of certain character arcs (no spoilers, but you’ll know when you get there). Martin is a master of subverting expectations while staying true to the brutal reality of his world. Nobody is safe, and that makes every page electric with suspense.
Tyrion Lannister continues to shine as one of the most complex and tragic characters in the series. His struggles with family, loyalty, and self-preservation feel painfully real. Meanwhile, Jon Snow's arc takes him deeper into the mysteries and dangers beyond the Wall, giving the reader a clearer view of the looming, supernatural threat. Arya Stark’s harrowing journey is full of grit and heartbreak, and Daenerys Targaryen's rise in Essos solidifies her as a force to be reckoned with.
What sets A Storm of Swords apart is Martin's ability to make even the quieter moments resonate. The political scheming, the betrayals, and the deeply personal choices of the characters all build toward a story that is as emotional as it is epic.
This book does not let you breathe. It’s devastating, exhilarating, and absolutely unforgettable. If you’re a fan of fantasy that isn’t afraid to delve into the dark and messy parts of humanity, A Storm of Swords is essential reading. Just be ready to pick your jaw up off the floor.
As a fan of the show, the other two books were good, but knowing what to expect took a little away from the reading experience. However, I had forgotten how many big moments take place during this section of his story. Everything from the show was even better here in the book. Excellent read!
This book is over 1,000 pages but I hardly would have felt it if it weren’t for the weeks that went by while reading it. It is so full of twists and tension that it always kept my attention. A Clash of Kings was a bit of a slog for me, but this book absolutely made up for it.
So many of the best events in the saga happen in this book! It’s a long one but a great read. Even fans of the show will get some fun surprises in this one
Absolutely wild. This book ruined me in the best way. The twists are brutal, the character development is insane, and there were so many moments where I just had to stop and process what happened. It’s dark, emotional, and honestly flawless. I don’t think I can mentally handle more tho…😭
