This is a self-help book that helps readers gain confidence in communicating with other people. The chapters address the feeling of disconnection, the positive health benefits of social interaction, examples of conversation techniques, and a way to help someone else, as well as how to engage in live social connections, find or create a conversational group, and leave isolation behind by having good friends.
The book predominantly looks at disconnection, social anxiety, and loneliness. Since the pandemic, a lot of people have been affected by the environmental change such as the habit of working from home to returning to work at an office and therefore struggle to mix with people. Thus, the book offers tips and tricks for developing confidence such as starting slow and reaching out digitally before communicating face-to-face.
There are bullet-point examples to explain cases that result in disconnection, social anxiety, and loneliness. This helps readers grasp a connection to their own experiences and understand why they have been struggling to talk to someone. The book is structurally easy to follow and visually appealing so readers can refer back to specific sections of the book in order to develop a certain aspect of their lack of confidence. For example, there is a difference between depression and anxiety and a reader may want to learn how to combat social anxiety caused by social marginality. The book also includes example questions to spark conversation starters or a deeper conversation.
However, the book focuses a lot more on the reasons for the struggle and the health benefits once a reader can communicate with others than on the step-by-step guide on improving their confidence. The mindset is easier said than done because while it is clear that to communicate, a person should be interested and interesting, for someone with social anxiety it could be extremely difficult to meet both at the same time. Although it is easier said than done to gain confidence, the book is a good guide to getting started. For example, there are tips and tricks for developing such confidence. This includes storytelling and sending the right energy.
I received a free review copy. Thank you to OnlineBookClub and author.
I have been using the conversation techniques that the author recommends, and they are working. I liked the “information branching” technique, I didn’t realize the mistakes I was making by not providing enough information to allow the conversation to take on different directions.
I especially liked the chapter about making new friends. The author provides many tips to make friends and also to maintain friends for the long term. I appreciate that the author mentioned that making new friends is sometimes difficult for adults because there are other factors that affect making connections to other people, especially not having enough time, distance, or simply that people don’t get value from maintaining a friendship. This book has words of wisdom about how to start socializing and making friends again.
I found this to be very beneficial for improving your interpersonal communication and connection with others. I also am not a very social person. There is a lot of information in this book that I can apply. It's very positive and gives you understanding how to build a relationship with others. If you want the right people interested in you, then you need to know how to engage with them. Be open and know how to ask questions that will create meaningful conversations.
This book is interesting because it tackles the challenges of isolation and depression in a practical way. The struggles are real especially post pandemic and more people are impacted by social isolation and finding purpose. Great reminders and tips on winning the battle of achieving interpersonal connection, one person at a time!
