The Belgian author Morris (full name Maurice de Bevere) is best known for his humorous cowboy character, Lucky Luke. Morris started his career in 1945 in Le Moustique, creating various covers and illustrations. By the end of the 1940s, Morris met his colleagues Jijé, Franquin and Will. These four artists would be called "The Gang of 4", because they all worked in Jijé's studio at that time. The first episode of Lucky Luke, 'Arizona 1880', was published in L'Almanach Spirou 1947, and was later continued in Spirou. In his early 'Lucky Luke' comics, Morris was greatly inspired by animated cartoons à la Disney.
In 1949, Jijé took Morris and Franquin to the US, where Morris met Jack Davis and Harvey Kurtzman, whom he helped with their plans for Mad Magazine. He also met René Goscinny in the US. In 1955, Morris returned to Europe and collaborated with René Goscinny on 'Lucky Luke'. Goscinny wrote the scenarios of over 35 stories, which led to the great success of the series.
'Lucky Luke' is one of the best-sellers i

I've read a bunch of Lucky Lukes as a child, even a few of the older ones - but never the very first (well, the second, after Arizona), up until today. The style of art and writing are still developing, but action's pretty good already.

The first appearance of Lucky Luke. Morris' style as, an aertist, was quite different back then and a bit more dark as far as the story is concerned but his potential was obvious.

Although he first appeared a few year’s earlier, this is the very first Lucky Luke collected edition, first seeing print in 1949. Morris’s style back then was very different to the one we now know where Luke’s portrayed as bring rugged, slender and seldom-fazed, no doubt channelling a bit of early Eastwood. Back at the beginning he had much more in common with those early Merrie Melodies and Disney cartoons where characters were much more rounded and cuddly with large, glistening eyes. In fact, there are several moments of comedy in this book that read more like a storyboard to an early animated cartoon, such as Luke being pursued up a narrow pass at speed causing, in subsequent panels, leaves to be whipped from a bush and a tethered goat to be tightly bound to a tree.

The titular Dick Digger, after months slaving away on his own in the West Hills, has finally struck gold and aims to make good on the claim and reunite with his family. Despite bumping into Lucky Luke, who offers to accompany him, Dick’s jovial demeanour and exuberance attracts the wrong sort of crowd during celebrations in a saloon and before the night is done Dick has been robbed of his gold and his rum bottle. The rum bottle is the biggest issue as it’s empty apart from a map pointing to the exact spot he has struck it rich. Dick’s been badly affected by the robbery so it’s down to Luke to pursue the criminals and recover what’s been taken. What follows is several changes of fortune with the map changing hands several times before the inevitable righting of the wrong. In the second story Luke arrives in a town where a villainous doppleganger is about to be hanged. The ne’erdowell’s accomplices spy a solution in Luke’s remarkable resemblance to their man and so a swift exchange is set up and Luke finds himself in serious trouble, where he must not only escape but also convince the populace that he’s who he claims to be, and it seems the only way to do that is to bring the bad guys to justice.

It’s great to see that even at this early stage, years before the wit of Goscinny enters the partnership, that Morris is hitting the mark with the gags, with many future comedic threads being explored, from Jolly Jumper’s dependable and dedicated nature to the somewhat rum deal the book gives undertakers.

Morris clearly hasn’t settled on a definitive style, and Luke’s looks change throughout the book, but perhaps it’s only really noticeable because Lucky Luke’s ultimate design is so familiar and memorable. What you can rely on are two solid tales to make you grin - a must buy for any Lucky Luke fan.

Lucky Luke #1: Dick Diggerin kultakaivos
Original title: La Mine d'or de Dick Digger
Lucky Luke #1: Dick Digger’s Gold Mine

by Morris is the first Lucky Luke in album format.

Storylines (spoilers):

In the first story Dick Digger discovers a gold vein, but his map is stolen. Lucky Luke and the bandits take turns chasing each other for owning the map. However, Lucky manages to trick the bandits by giving them a fake map. In the end, Lucky and the sheriff capture the bandits when they fall into the trap set in the false map.

In the second story Lucky Luke has a double: the bank robber Mad Jim. Other outlaws knock out Lucky and secretly switch him with Jim, sending Lucky to prison in Jim’s place. Luke manages to escape and captures the trio, but they are freed when Native Americans intervene and take Luke prisoner instead. Luke breaks free again, recaptures the bandits, and delivers them to the sheriff. After a final mix-up over who is who, the story ends with Lucky shooting Jim.

The art is not looking the same as I had read as a child, this first book is quite ”raw” yet but still appealing and the story is good. And it’s very hilarious, love the jokes, visual ones too!

A little unfinished and Popeye the Sailor –esque visuals and too violent, but you have to start somewhere and Lucky Luke started here. It gets so much better later on.
