The small boat drifts gently down the river, twisting slowly with the current. Lying on the bottom, a still figure is dressed in midnight black robes, holding a single red rose in cold, pale hands…
When two students at ancient Durham University make a gruesome discovery, Dr Harrison Lane, Head of the Ritualistic Behavioural Crime unit, is summoned to investigate. A young student has been murdered, satanic symbols etched across their chest, and Harrison is disturbed to see the upside-down hangman’s cross, the devil’s symbol of justice. To Harrison, there’s no justice here, and he vows to uncover the truth.
The student was popular, and the police can’t find a motive for the murder. Meanwhile, rumours of ghost sightings are spreading like wildfire across campus, and they all seem to be circling around one Palace Green, a popular meeting place in the very oldest part of the university.
Then Harrison discovers an unsolved cold case – a student who went missing a year ago, presumed drowned. Wondering if it could be related to the recent death, he digs into it further – what he finds sends shockwaves across the campus. Is something deadly and sinister happening in the heart of the university?
As Harrison comes closer to the truth, he realizes that the stakes have never been higher. With a killer on the run and a ticking clock counting down, Harrison must confront the demons from his own past and face down a dangerously powerful adversary to finally uncover the truth.
Perfect for fans of Rachel McLean, Angela Marsons and Rachel Abbott.

Gwyn Bennett is a best-selling author who writes intriguing fast-paced character driven crime mysteries.
She's always been a writer, initially working as a broadcast journalist and newsreader for the BBC and ITN in London, before she was able to become a full-time fiction author. Gwyn undertakes a lot of research for her books, weaving fact in with the fiction in order to make them relatable to readers. Her favourite days are when she hears from people who have enjoyed her books and meeting the characters.
Gwyn was born in England, but has lots of Welsh and some Irish blood in her. She now lives in the tiny Channel Island of Jersey, where her husband was born, with her family, rescue dog, and geriatric goldfish. Apart from being chief dog slave and fish feeder, she enjoys walking, yoga and eating crisps, with a bit of gardening when the sun shines.
"I learned early on that there are all kinds of evil people that hide behind religion."
Deadly Secrets, Book 3 of the Dr. Harrison Lane murder mystery series by addicting author Gwyn Bennett, is my favorite of the series.
A student is dead in a boat dressed in monk robes, a rose in his hands and an upside down cross etched in his body; the devil's symbol of justice.
Narrator George Weightman embodies Dr. Lane with just the right inflections; sometimes humorous, sometimes sad, often tired and a lot frustrated as we follow not only the latest murder but shocking findings about his past and his mother's death. There's also some romance; FINALLY!
I received a free copy of this audiobook from the publishers via #NetGalley for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.
This series is innovative & one that I can’t stop reading. The character of Dr Lane is one of best that I have seen created & I have read many crime novels. His continuing backstory is just as enthralling as the main plotline in each book. Read them all. Read them in order. Onto book 4
This was a gripping read taking me to Harrogate and Durham and secret societies and murder. Harrison is a great character who is having trouble committing to a relationship and throwing himself into his work. It is easy to read, fascinating and engrossing.
This was an intense, complex, and intriguing story with many unexpected twists that will hook you from beginning to end. I would definitely recommend this book, series, and author.
