Heat Trap

Rate this book
An omega cop.
An alpha criminal.
A trap sprung of scent and instinct.

As a woman and an omega, Devya Michael is a rarety in the Alpha Crimes Unit. It’s a boys’ club, a betas’ club, and she aims to make her mark and prove herself.

If that means she goes undercover and triggers her heat? If it means she serves herself up as a lure for Finnian Travis, head of an interconnected syndicate of criminal motorcycle clubs?

She’ll do it.

Her partner, no-nonsense alpha Gabriel Johnson, is supposed to be there to make sure that things don’t go too far with Finn. But the truth is, she and Gabriel are having trouble keeping their relationship strictly professional.

And Finn himself is cocksure, scarred, and appealing, with an alpha scent so intense that it makes her whine and perfume. Finn’s second-in-command, Wolff Merrick, with his big hands and his gentle voice, scents pretty good to her, too.

She begins to dread her impending heat in a way that’s not dread at all, in a way that’s really half-mad yearning.

This trap is meant to snare a criminal alpha. But she begins to wonder who is the one who’s been caught here, and who it is who’s never going to escape.

This reverse harem romance is set in a contemporary non-shifter omegaverse world and it contains male-on-male interaction.

Devya, the female omega lead, is determined to succeed in the Department of Designation Security (DDS) so that she can change the biased policies regarding alphas and omegas which have been created by betas. Her first assignment is to interview an imprisoned alpha, Wolff, one of the male leads, to see whether the temptation of her proximity will cause him to provide information regarding his boss, Finn, a second male lead, for whom he was second-in-command. When Wolff cause Devya to go into heat, Gabriel, the last alpha lead, has been assigned to retrieve her because their boss wants to see if the rumour that Gabriel can force an omega out of heat is true. He can but it causes the beginning of a bond.

Now sent undercover to infiltrate Finn’s headquarters, Devya is again thrown into heat and the alphas need to look after her. But is there a solution to the apparent conflict? Especially given how justifiably angry Wolff is that Finn abandoned him to prison.

This story is quadruple POV, well written and edited, and an interesting, complex, reverse harem romance which isn’t just focused on the female. I appreciated the level of character development for all characters, and their changing perspectives on right, wrong, and the law. I enjoyed the intimate scenes and the way all characters engaged with each other. I appreciated the fact that Finn actually apologised to Wolff at the end. I enjoyed Diego as a secondary character - he made me chuckle. I enjoyed the way Devya and Gabriel had to rethink how they engaged with government. I also enjoyed the extended ending that gave an in-depth conclusion to the story. I LIKE knowing what my characters get up to, especially regarding the resolution of the political plot surrounding the characters and their relationship.

I received a complimentary copy from the author and this is my voluntary honest review.

I really enjoyed this. The set-up was a bit different than a lot of omegaverse books. Omegas and Alphas are not only the minority but alphas especially are treated poorly in general. They are distrusted and seen as unable to control themselves.

There is so much happening in the book. All the interconnected relationships and ideas of working within the system vs against it. Not to mention jealousy and working out what happens when the hormones lessen and the real world invades. But I love how real it all managed to feel, in an absurd setting. The HEA is hard fought and not rainbows and puppies. But it is really well done and I loved how these four made it work.

totally different omegaverse

This has to be the most original omegaverse type book I’ve ever read. It was unique in the plot and flowed seamlessly. The character arcs were epic and the best part is this author didn’t rush or give a non existent ending. Your eased into, all loose ends were tidied up, and it had an epic ending/epilogue into their future. Not as spicy as you would think for a RH but it’s there. Bravo.

Heat Trap is a steamy romance with a thrilling plot! I read many ABO stories, and while the stories vary, the worlds are generally similar. But Heat Trap was a unique take on the ABO world, placing Beta’s in charge and making Alphas outcasts because of their "dangerous" instincts. I was intrigued by the world Lluxe created and how Devya and her mates work to subvert their society's ridged structure while embracing their mating bonds.

I loved that Heat Trap had diverse main characters and that Devya and Gabriel addressed how being Indian American and Black impacted their law enforcement careers as much as their Omega and Alpha designations. I also liked that the romance was not centered around Devya. Instead, we got to see Devya, Gabriel, Finn, and Wolff all fall in love with and be intimate together, while developing unique relationships with each other. When we meet Wolff and Finn their relationship had become toxic. Which added another layer of complications the four had to resolve. However, Finn eventually addresses and apologizes to Wolff for his toxic behavior. I appreciated how the author made Finn grovel and prove he cared for Wolff by showing he was willing to do whatever to regain his trust. It was a complicated relationship that the author handled extremely well while making Finn likable and Wolff sympathetic.

While the sex scenes were amazing, I thought they took over the middle of the book a bit. The balance between romance and political intrigue was lost, which I found disappointing because sometimes, I was more interested in the police versus gang leader chase. However, I loved all of the main characters and enjoyed reading each of their points of view. Their POVs were so distinctive, making it easy to understand each character's motivations and watch the feelings between the four of them quickly develop from enemies/colleagues/frenemies to lovers (depending on the pairing). The romance was a fast-burn-fated mates story. Not two of my favorite tropes, but Lluxe's writing was so entertaining and drew me in so quickly that I ended up loving two tropes I try to avoid.

The ending was brilliant! Both plots wrapped up nicely, and even though it nicely presented happy ever after, it was a realistic ending. We also get to see the aftermath of Devya, Gabriel, Finn, and Wolff’s decision to sacrifice and fight for equality for the designation and recognition that Alphas were not dangerous. Unlike other romances, the reader learns how the new partners make their relationships and lives work years into the future. Heat Trap is a wonderfully quick and sexy read with a substantial plot and intriguing characters. If you like to read twisty plots with your smut, complex characters and relationships, and a little government shake-up I highly recommend this book.

Thank you V. C. Lluxe for the ARC!
