A collection of micro, flash and short horror stories by Laura Nettles. A few have been published in anthologies and magazines already, but many have never been seen by the public.
Enjoy tales from various horror traditions. The collection is divided into Cosmic Slithers, Terrors of the Mundane, Angels and Demons, The Seeping Supernatural, Twisted Psychology, Shadowy Gothic, Mutated Sci-fi and Holiday Food Horror.
Getting the shivers. Tingles down your back, thoughts scramble at the fastest speed, and perspiration transpire in the space of a dozen words. Tiny Shivers.
After finishing the book Tiny Shivers, a series of short horror stories, I have so much to say.
Laura truly has skill with description and the five senses. The way she described color, texture, and sound was purely illuminating. It really brings you into the stories. It's definitely not something easily accomplished with short stories. So I really enjoyed that.
Quite a few truly sent shivers down my spine. They brought me personally to the heights of fear. Released At Last being one of these.
Of course, while I enjoyed the entire collection of short stories there are a few that stuck with me in my mind.
Recommend you give this a read.
Disclaimer: Totally honest review from someone eternally happy having been able to Arc read it.
As someone who generally steers clear of the horror genre, I found myself pleasantly surprised by Tiny Shivers. The anthology format was a godsend for a tentative horror reader like me; each story was a short but potent dose of creepiness that left me thrilled but not overwhelmed. It was like dipping my toes into the ocean of horror without the fear of being swallowed whole by relentless waves of terror.
Laura Nettles, the mastermind behind this collection, knows exactly how to calibrate the tension in these stories. Her writing is concise but impactful, creating an environment where every word matters. So, if you're like me and have always been a bit hesitant to explore horror, Tiny Shivers will be a great introductory read for you to explore.
Tiny shivers turned into big shivers! I absolutely loved every story in this collection. With 101 tales of spine-chilling horror, there's something here for everyone—from the kind that creeps up on you and keeps you awake at night, to the kind that makes you think long after you’ve finished reading.
The illustrations were a perfect complement to the stories—beautifully done and fitting the eerie tone of the book. The formatting was elegant, striking just the right balance to enhance the haunting theme. I honestly can’t pick a favorite story because each one was so well written and filled my horror-loving heart with joy.
I’m always excited to see more from this talented author and can’t wait for their next release!
The writing is good. However I was extremely annoyed that only about 26 of the 101 “short stories” were at least 2 pages long. One story was 5 sentences long, and another was 8 sentences long. That is more of a note for a possible future story. The majority of the stories just weren’t long enough to get into, and eventually I gave up hope of ever getting into them.
I liked 2 of the stories, and one was probably the most fleshed out one in the lot. The LARPing one and the car dump were the two standouts for me.
I started reading this back in June. 06/15/2023 to be exact. Took me three months to finish such a good book! My personal favorites were: Mangled Graveyard Snow Drift (For the Final Destination vibes I got from it) Frozen Retribution and Twisted Recovery Laura, you truly are a penner of terror and you are so amazing in everything you do ❤
I quite enjoyed this. Stories ranged from okay to impressive. I especially admire the prose in this collection of stories. I've learnt flash fiction isn't quite my thing, but many stories were intriguing.
Some that stood out to me were: Tentacles and Boomboxes from the short stories and Alice from the flash fiction.
With many spine tingling tales, this book as something for everyone! Laura Nettles uses her vast skill at vivid pros pulls you in, scares the hell out of you and let's you go. Highly recommend this collection of mostly-bite sized spooks
