Prime Mating Agency #8

I Married a Dryad

Rate this book
He was her perfect match.

Fed up with the deadbeats and jerks infesting the standard dating pool, Maeve reaches out to the Prime Mating Agency, hoping to improve her luck. Her fear of ending up with some weird primitive alien is immediately alleviated when she’s paired with a stunning Edocit. Smart, funny, sweet, and as hellbent in protecting the weak and the oppressed as she is, Helio exceeds everything she ever dreamed of. If only she didn’t have to keep so many secrets from him.

Helio hadn’t been actively looking for a mate, least of all an off-worlder. But the moment he lays eyes on Maeve, he’s smitten… but also intimidated. Aside from the cultural shock their pairing is bound to give her, he’s a mere bounty hunter, while she’s a brilliant, high-ranking officer of the Enforcers, the elite intergalactic peacekeeping forces. Despite his insecurities, they’re off to a great start… until tragedy strikes.

With the lives of countless innocents on the line, will the clash of their respective worlds tear them apart, or will they overcome adversity to prevail against evil?

What’s the point of a romance if the main characters are already perfect for each other right from the start?

I feel like I wasted my time reading this book because neither of the characters grows or changes in the slightest. They meet, they’re in awe of each other, they have some steamy times…where’s the conflict? What’s the point?

I’ve liked other Prime Mating Agency installments but this one really fell flat for me.

There was tons of infodumping on the world and the alien dryads, which were cool but we really did not need to know that much about them.

There was also an adventure/rescue plotline but again, since the characters were already perfect from the start, it didn’t actually help them grow or overcome anything.

Usually I love learning about the new species we are introduced to, but 40% of the book was spent infodumping planet (named Zailia) facts and Edocit culture, 50% was spent on a mission, and 10% was spent on the relationship. Information was not distributed evenly or in a way that felt seamless.

Maeve and Helio were both eager for their marriage, but there was almost no time spent developing their relationship. While they were both nice characters, they were very bland to me—until the end, where their chemistry finally felt real, but then it was OVER.

The blurb mentions Maeve keeping secrets and tragedy striking, but honestly, this is very misleading. Her secrets and the tragedy is

They work together as a team, and eventually,

I’m not exaggerating: there is no friction in their relationship. They communicate through any (one, actually) issues immediately, and then are smitten with each other again. Where are the awkward missteps? I’ve loved them in the rest of the series, but their absence is felt here.

After seeing Kaida and Cedros from I Married a Dragon find happiness in their match Maeve is determined to find hers. Especially since she's always disappointed by the guys she goes out with. Quickly, she is paired with Helio a handsome Edocit (dryad-like alien) who's instantly besotted with her. After marrying each other, their honeymoon is cut short by the news that a sappling in the community as been abducted by traffickers. Maeve who is an Enforcer and Helio who is a hunter, more specifically a rescuer, they agree to go on a mission to save the youngling.

I'm going to be honest here; I didn't especially like this one. Probably my least favorite in the series, even after I Married a Dragon which didn't hold my attention as much as the other books. I'm not sure what it is but I noticed that both books are similar in the way the author chooses to send her characters on a mission. It's not bad per say but my initial feeling about the Prime Mating Agency series is that I sign up for a conjugal, romantic story. I expect the focus to be on the couple more than the stuff around it. The couple is the plot; they adapt to the culture of the other, they learn to compromise, fall in love, etc.

“You want your soulmate, not a generic checklist. You want someone who completes you, elevates you, brings out the best that dwells within you, and for whom you can do the same.”-Kayog

I didn't like Maeve. Her character wasn't appealing to me. Right from the start, she expected to face adversities by marrying Helio, even though she chose him and he chose her. I just thought it was strange that she would commit herself when she might've had doubts, and especially since they weren't even in a real contract with the PMA to begin with (since Helio's species isn't considered 'primitive). So they were both entering the union willingly, but she was such a negative Nancy in the beginning. Maeve also claimed that she always disliked the fact that her parents were keeping secrets from her all her childhood but she literally does the same to Helio, keeping information from him. I understand it's because as an Enforcer, she can't talk too much details but it didn't sit well with me.

Helio and I had hit it off so smoothly from the start that I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop.-Maeve

Stop comparing yourself to others and looking for trouble where there is none.-Maeve

I struggled to reconcile the fact that this was turning out to be such smooth sailing so far.-Maeve

Helio was a bit more likable but again, he wasn't all that interesting. I liked that his physiology showed his emotions visually; for example when he felt shy or experienced a strong emotion of happiness, flowers would bloom around his face. I thought the concept was cute. He was a bit self-conscious and worried that their physical differences would bother Maeve but she was able to make him comfortable.

I ran a nervous hand over my dark green hair, adjusting the placement of the tiny vines interspersed between the strands. I had willed the leaves to stand proudly, which would make me prettier—at least by Edocit standards. Sadly, I had no control over the tiny buds that grew on my vines. Powerful emotions made them bloom. That made us truly attractive, not to mention the enticing spores they released.

The characters were somewhat nice but I didn't feel connected to them at all this time. I think it's because the focus was too much on the mission. Helio and Maeve only really spent two days together (which includes the quick wedding, the 'honeymoon' and one quick date) and then they go straight into a mission. Let's not forget that most moments between them were more like info dumping about Helio's world, and it wasn't done is a very smooth way. The thing is, Maeve and Helio seemed to be a good couple but there was no real chemistry, no real connection. I'm not sure how to explain it. Mechanical and detached.

I see what the author tried to do. I guess it was nice to see what Enforcers do and how they operate... I think the main problem is that I went into this book expecting a love story not an investigation where the romance took the backseat. I can appreciate the world building and the attempt at bringing more serious issues into the PMA series but yeah...It simply didn't hold my attention and I struggled a bit to finish it. Sorry :( I really liked the beautiful ending tho, it was sweet! I actually raised my rating a little bit, thanks to that!

Generally speaking, this series is very enjoyable and laid back but I was a little bit disappointed this time with this particular installment. I didn't connect with the characters, wasn't all that interested by the investigation going on... BUT I have good hopes the next books will be better.

I love this series, but....

this one just didn't quite hit the mark. I don't know if it was due to Helio and Maeve not getting enough one on one, getting to know each other, relationship building time because we went from them just getting married to immediately dealing with a missing person case. Also the "supposedly" (we're told) dominant Helio was pretty bland though admittedly very sweet and caring.

This one felt very different from the other books in this series. I don't know if this is in a different POV from the others but I found myself having a hard time getting into the story due to the first person perspective where the characters were just telling me what was happening. It came across so detached for me.

I am really bummed that this didn't resonant and entertain as well as some of the other couples. Even though Helio's alien features and abilities were really cool, it was presented in a way that fell a little flat. I did like both Helio and Maeve. I even teared up at their Edocit wedding, emotional sap that I am. This is still one of my favorite SFR series and I am hoping beyond hope, fingers crossed, that we will get the "Hell Lord," the dark elf mixed with a demon character we met in this one, Kronos' story next.

2.5 stars - While I do love the cultural aspects of this book, I think there was WAY too much of it to the point of info dumping. And as far as romance... look, I have a fungi phobia. I've read speculative romances with plant based aliens before that worked for me, but this triggered my ick factor too much for me to enjoy this as a romance. I'll give it bonus points for inventiveness, but for me, this was the least successful entry in this otherwise great series

So. Freaking. Cool!
I am so in love with this series, and a big reason for that is the uniqueness of the alien’s culture, and physiology this author builds.
The dryads were some of the coolest species I think.

I mean..they’re plant people…
Like…more humanoid Groots…sort of.
So freaking cool!

Plus I really liked the dynamic of these two.
Their situation was a bit different than most of the other couples in the series. Since the FMC went to the PMA Asking to be mated.

I just really loved the book.
Their love was so sweet. The relationship wasn’t perfect, but it was so much better for it in the end..

I can’t wait to see what the next book will be.
What species will be next.
This whole series is just too good to not be impatient to find out.

I think this might be the weirdest book in the series 😂

Don’t get me wrong, it’s still very good, but it was just a 3 star rating for me. Partially for the weirdness but also there was a lot of info dumping. If you have read the first book in the series, it read a lot like that one. More time spent in world-building than in relationship development.

That being said, the world was very interesting. The MMC is a dryad-like being who has leaves, blooms and vines literally growing out of his scalp and skin. He connects to a mother tree on the planet, as well as the ground to see how healthy the planet is. The wildlife is unique and charming, and the people are very kind overall. Their method of reproduction is where things get weird - the female only carries the baby for 8 weeks and then the baby literally pops out, gets up and walks to the mother tree, and finishes gestation inside the tree. Apparently it’s also completely pain free…which is great, but the science behind that escaped me.

The FMC is a hacker working with the Enforcers, who keep the peace across the universe, and the MMC helps with search and rescue. He specializes in finding his people’s youth, who are frequently kidnapped for the leaves growing on them. The leaves are considered potent drugs and sell for a lot of money. So there is a lot of action as they work together to save a kidnapped youth, which was exciting. Pace really picked up in the story at that point.

Definitely give it a try, but I would not read this one first in the series! Best to read other books first, to see if it’s a series you would like. 😊

So...in a nutshell, I think I should mention that I did like this new addition to the PMA series...

...but at the same time, I was also kind of bored by it.

I'm seeing the same things in the series of other readers as well, so I know that I'm not alone in this, but basically there IS a lot of infodumping and exposition in the first half of the book that just feels...stilted, overdone, and ultimately holds up the story from developing. It's only around the 50% mark that we get our first bit of conflict introduced and, honestly, by that point I was pretty much in the DNF zone anyway.

So...yeah, definitely the weakest book of this series so far, and in a way it also kind of doesn't count as a PMA romance of the series, since we're told even at the beginning that Helio technically isn't from a primitive species, and Kayog is really just arranging things between him and Maeve...in his own free time, I guess.

Overall, colour me unimpressed by this one.

Sorry, not sorry.

It hurts me a little to give one of Regine Abel's books such a low rating, but this was just not a good book. There was so much infodumping in the first half of the book that I found myself skimming through the paragraphs to find some plot.

The romance took a serious backseat to the infodumping and the bounty hunter on the case vibe, and that was incredibly disappointing. The two of them fell in love so easily; they only had one very small disagreement, which blew over quickly. I need a little bit of angst or something! And all of the hype in the blurb about secrets being kept and etc was never delivered. It was so anticlimactic that I blew through the "secrets" and it was only at the end of the book that I realized that THAT was supposed to be something.

I'm going to keep on with this series because it was my first real foray into monsters and aliens and I LOVE some of the books in it. But this one was a big disappointing clunker.

idk if it’s because the couple felt immediate attraction, or the lack of conflict or the insane amount of info dumping, but this book bored me so bad i was even skimming the spicy scenes 😭 i felt no chemistry between the couple and i truly didn’t care about the kidnapping plot. i loved the world and culture of the Edocits, it all seemed so beautiful and fairy like, but i almost dnf’d the book bc of how incredibly bored i was.

This was a little different to the other books in the series and it didn’t feel as authentic. There’s something about Maeve that’s very annoying lol. I don’t know if it’s her Uber independence or her lack of self introspection…but there’s a reason some of her previous partners didn’t work out and it’s not just because of them.

I loved Helio. He was selfless and kind and honest. He was really a character of virtue.

The relationship progressed fine but I also just felt something was missing between the couple. The writing was a little bland…more telling instead of showing? As opposed to her other books that felt like you were immersed in the culture.

I really hope the next book is the moth man.

Well, let's see, I'm a big fan of this series of books, I think the author has an art to create magical and amazing worlds, sometimes it's amazing how she makes absolutely everything we read make some kind of sense, it's amazing.

This book was no exception, how she created this world of tree people hahaha, it was amazing, it made me feel like I was there and made me wish I could actually be there, see those beautiful houses and all that world.

The plot was spectacular, I mean the action, saving so many lives in a spectacular way, it shows me that Helio and Maeve are spectacular working together, they have a lot of chemistry for that, together they made magic, as coworkers, but as a couple they left me a lot to be desired.

The truth is that I didn't believe that "love" for me it came out of nowhere, they were together one day and the next they were already doing other things and then time goes by and they love each other, but where is the process? Where is the development as characters? There is absolutely none, because they are soulmates everything is valid? Well I don't think so, I think the author completely forgot about the development of love, she concentrated on other things that were so far adrift.

The book is narrated in two voices, both protagonists are very different, they have almost nothing in common, I didn't feel that I had time to get to know them, because there are no moments in which they know each other, there is only action, sex and that's it.

It is a book different from the rest, because in the series you see the process of couples, it is certainly my least favorite, my rating is for the plot, for the action, for the world, but as a romantic science fiction story if it falls short, it is a super rare instalove, because it is like a night of sex and already, because if time passes but we do not see those interractions.

The ending gave me a lot of laughter, that was too crazy, oh no what a laugh. I hope the author writes again like the other stories, because without a doubt they are great, although this one failed.

Oh it was good to see Cedros to Kaida and her family, I wasn't such a fan of her book but it's great to know that they are still happy.

I don't know if I recommend this book but it was fun and interesting to read.

Never Have I Ever DNF'ed a Regine Abel story. I guess there is a first time for everything. 28% of cringey dialogue, I couldn't take it anymore! It's ok to stop a series after say 3 or 5 books if it's not working!

I understand trying to keep these stories fresh but the quality is fading. The world she describes is my Utopia, gorgeous and magical. But blech, I don't like the h. She is awful. But he is too perfect. Maybe it gets better but I don't want to try.

Even Kayog seemed a little off! Interrupting and scolding:
“The rest is irrelevant,” Kayog interrupted in a firm tone. “You want your soulmate, not a generic checklist. You want someone who completes you, elevates you, brings out the best that dwells within you, and for whom you can do the same.”

And this was just so awkward to read:
I snorted. “In case you have forgotten, I have a career of my own. I can work too to help provide for the needs of our household.”
He smiled. “Yes, you can. But I hope you will choose to work with me instead. I’m long overdue for a reliable partner. And you, my dear wife, seem to possess exactly the type of skills needed.”
“I’m pretty sure I do,” I said smugly. “You have a few months to convince me.”
“Then I shall!” he replied with a confidence I found super sexy."

It's true that you know what you're getting when you read a Prime Mating Agency story: A human woman and an alien man entering into an arranged marriage (sometimes volunteering to be matched, other times via external circumstances). The love story will be relatively low-conflict and mostly center on cultural and physical differences. Both leads will be practical and adult about the marriage and work towards making a success out of the venture. (But readers know if Kayog made the match, there's no way they're not soulmates.) So sure, they can get repetitive. But I know I'll get a nice reliable shot of cozy warm feels injected right into my veins.

This time we've got Maeve, an Enforcer (and friend/colleague of Kaida from I Married a Dragon) giving up the apps and going directly to Kayog. She's matched with Helios, an Edocit (a tree/plant man who's super hot and smells like a flower garden), who is a bounty hunter. Together, they fall in love and fight crime. A warm cuddle in book form.

So this one was quite a bit different than the preceeding novels, from the hero to the beginnings of their relationship. There was very little conflict in the first 40% of the book, so I did get a little bored, which impacted how I felt when it finally did arrive. The first part felt a bit like an info dump since the hero and his world were so different. Overall, I did enjoy it, but not as much as I have enjoyed previous novels in the series.

4-

Emozionante, no?

Well this was a very adorable and interesting read. I say interesting because I love all the creative liberties the author took when creating the heroes species. I’ve read about similar-ish sci-fi heroes so I wasn’t completely thrown with all the rooting going on 🫣 but I really loved how him and his species are able to directly connect with the planet. This was more of the cutesy side as both are excited and eager to meet after learning they’ve been declared as official mates. Not only do the two complement one another they also both work in the field of apprehending baddies and doing the dangerous missions no one else wants which brought a little action to their HEA. Really fun addition to the series.

my least favorite in the series

Update// through a reread I actually hated this book even more. It was so incredibly boring. I forced myself to read it the first time but never again

I LOVE her series. The problem is I did not love this book. It wasn’t a terrible book. I just wasn’t excited about any of it. Even within it it just never grabbed me and made enjoy the characters. I just was like meh okay is it over yet?

And honestly it could be my mood but I just didn’t dig this book in comparison to her other ones. This isn’t the best in the series and that’s okay. It’s not bad so it is worth a read.

This installment in the PMA series starts the same with intensely boring world building and canned dialogue. But the connection between the people and the land was pretty cool. And I can really get behind a tree taking up the shitty part of gestation. Who needs a ruined abdomen, hemmorhoids and back pain?

The romance was insta-lust and lackluster. But we got to see Cedric again, so plus there.

Horrible, horrible.
No me gustó nada.
No solo me pareció flojo, sino también perturbador.
Y aburrido.
Desastre.

I love this series. It’s arranged marriage (ish, in some cases) with a slice-of-life feel to the story. And of course the ridiculous titles for each book that crack me up.

In this book, Helio and Maeve have an arranged marriage set up by everyone’s favorite Temern matchmaker. Only this time, Helio is from a relatively advanced society so the marriage doesn’t fall under the purview of the Prime Mating Agency; instead, Kayog chooses to help these two out because he’s met them previously and thinks they’d be a great match.

Maeve, an Enforcer, and Helio, a bounty hunter, find their relationship to be very easy. They immediately feel like they’ve know each other forever, their humor is compatible with the other’s, and the jobs they each have are in similar realms, which ultimately allows them to work together and not have to go long periods of time without seeing each other. And of course, there is a deep mutual attraction.

I enjoyed learning about Helio’s world. If you care about the environment and sometimes wonder if we can ever completely cut down on pollution - Helio’s world Zilian has solved those issues. Granted, they are all tree people so if they polluted their planet they’d be polluting/infecting themselves and dying off as a race.

I loved that the Zilian flora allowed the people to become technologically advanced; there are giant leaves that act as solar panels, malleable wood to create houses/furniture/cars, and telepathic ways to communicate over long distances without needing the internet. They even have a species of tree that ferments it’s fruit if left to ripen long enough, so you can go and pluck a gourd full of alcohol if you’re looking to have a fun night. Not to mention, when a member of the species goes through puberty they spend the entire teenage years high because of their hormones. Their leaves (grown on their head) are used as a recreational drug in the galaxy, which leads into the story that makes up the latter half of the book.

Maeve and Helio have to join together to track down a kidnapped Zilian teen and end up stumbling across a huge grow operation that involves trafficking and enslavement.

Great story, great characters, and although the world building was a little info-dumpy, it still held my interest.
