Catastrophes and Hard Knocks on the Path to Success and Love
People move to San Francisco for many reasons. For Jaxon-Jax-Bancroft the move was a no-brainer. San Fran was the Mecca for the tech world that he so desperately wished to conquer. And, at one time, as a young college student Jax and his buddies, Nick Maywood and Grayson Blackstone, had created Quick Reels—a clever, addictive game that would become their ticket to success, wealth and the West Coast good life.
But, the three creative friends, in their innocence and naivety, became the victims of Zack Villefort, a clever, crafty man whose gift was to trick and defraud young entrepreneurs. While gifted thinkers, coders and inventors, the three were not savvy in the scams of a sneaky shysters who cleverly stole the intellectual property of the three friends wreaking havoc on the dreams and plans of trusting young men.
Now, after retreating back home to his family, Jax is back in San Fran, burned by his earlier mistakes, he is now ready to do business with hard learned wisdom in the field of “trust and verify.” His new company, Honeycomb Games, is ready to issue an IPO and to introduce a new game—Chocolate Crush. And, having learned from his past, Jax has tried to ensure that he will not make the same mistakes again.
And so, this time, he is careful and wary. He has sought the guidance of Mason Sullivan, the chairman of Sullivan Healy Newhouse, Honeycomb’s venture capital firm. SHN is a well-respected and well-known firm that helps guide young startups to success. And while he has a respected firm and a potentially great game—still with some tech issues—Jax has gained some reputation issues. Equally frustrating his IPO launch is his inability to gain control of his on social media image following a messy dating relationship and break up with an extremely popular singer/song writer.
Tessa Sky seemed to find unending creativity and inspiration when turning their brief, but very public affair, into music—resulting in his own public relations nightmare at delicate time in his company’s internal board and stock actions. His disgruntled former lover’s disgruntled prolific airing of their private—and very much embellished—relationship was destroying his office dynamics, his board’s respect and killing the hopes of the stock offering.
Jax desperately needs an office manager who is personable, firm and sharp. He needs also needs temporary girl friend who can snuff the gossip and constantly fanned flames by Tessa’s PR drops and character destroying internet song drops—even if he has to seek a professional woman for hire to be his arm candy, providing a distraction to the Tessa story. So, as he builds his company and puts out fires, Jax is frustrated by his inability to retain a person as his PA—one who will not try to become Mrs. Bancroft or sell the story of her time as his PA to the paparazzi.
So, when Harper Lockwood a beautiful graduate of Boston University, a credentialed graphic designer, connects with the job through a friend, she is hired with only a few queries from the boss—Zack. And had he been an ogre, she would have accepted. She needs a job that pays a good salary without asking her to perform illegal or immoral acts.
When the CEO of her company absconded with the company’s payroll, leaving all the employees high and dry, she became desperate to get a job—to pay the rent—to buy food—to not have to return home to her family home near Boston where she would be expected to become the unpaid cook, housekeeper, caregiver and general girl-Friday for her large, loving but dysfunctional, Catholic family. And while being a member of the daily operations of her family, she must admit that she gained a high degree of tolerance for an individual’s weaknesses, and quite capable of managing the diverse needs of many—the definition of a successful PA to CEO.
Again, Ainsley St. Claire has crafted a delightful romance filled with attraction, mystery, challenges and the magic of love. As the second installment, she leaves the reader satisfied with the knowledge that the story of three college friends who received an education in the school of life of shysters and charlatans has one more installment and that all has ended well for 2 of the 3 friends.
I received an ARC for this romance through BookSprout, but also bought a copy for my Kindle collection.
