Quinn Donahue’s put in a long, hard day at his lover Aaron Miller’s family horse farm, and he’s looking forward to a hot bath and a good night’s sleep. But that’s before he finds Aaron waiting for him in their dark apartment, apparently in the mood to play a game. Aaron was a virgin when he’d hooked up with Quinn, while Quinn was the furthest thing from innocent. So if Aaron wants to experiment a little, then Quinn feels privileged to play along.
This is kind of funny; I'd forgotten that this was a sequel to Shying Away, and totally didn't connect Quinn and Aaron with THAT Quinn and Aaron (and the cover and first page don't say it's a sequel)...and I loved this! It made me laugh out loud in places, and it was sweet, and hot. It wasn't till I looked it up here to post a review that I made the connection - and had to go back and read it again, this time thinking of what I remember from Shying Away.
And now I still have new stuff in my TBR pile...and I'm going to go read Shying Away again, because Quinn & Aaron are just that awesome.
Hot! A nice read no matter what, but an absolute must for readers who enjoyed Shying Away. Quinn still melts my heart and Aaron is sexy when whe gets toppy. :o
This is a sequel to Shying Away, which I confess I have not read. However based on the blurb for that book and the back story revealed in their short sequel, it seems that Aaron was a virgin who pursued Quinn. One of the ongoing themes is Quinn’s thoughts that Aaron couldn’t possibly really love him because it being his first love, his first lover.
In this short, Quinn comes home after a rough day working hoping for some food, a hot shower and maybe a little fun. However Aaron has something else in mind and aware that Aaron has little sexual experience, Quinn is always happy to play along with anything that Aaron wants to try. Tonight Aaron has decided that he’ll be the one in control and Quinn will do as he’s told, and keep quiet about it, especially when Aaron sets about convincing Quinn that he does love him and it’s not just infatuation or puppy love.
This is essentially a long extended sex scene between the two men, and it is hot with a delicious sense of anticipation on Quinn’s part as he’s blindfolded and is unsure of what Aaron is getting up to. However there are also some humourous moments that break it up and keep it from being thirty pages of one note intensity. Aaron’s playfulness comes through and when he tells him to sit, and stay, Quinn responds with:
“Okay, we’re not pretending that I’m a dog. I’m safewording all over that one.”
However when push comes to shove, he would do puppy play if Aaron wanted. Fans of the first book will enjoy this little taste of Aaron and Quinn down the road, and will appreciate seeing Quinn accept what Aaron is offering him. It has made me curious about the first book, and I will probably pick it up when I get a chance as I imagine the dynamic in that first book was intriguing with two very different men.
I'm not sure why this is rated so low - other than it really would have made a great epilogue because it did show some character growth, maturity and emotional connection for both MCs.
Also, the whole thing was fuck-hot. I ADORED the way Aaron kept falling out of the Dom-role and how Quinn, attempting to humor him, just kept pushing the boundaries since the attention, the affection (and his innate reaction to distrust) made him uncomfortable with all the feels. Best of all though was how very little of the action resembled what happens in other D/s stories or porn you find on the internet. Because Aaron is a complete Noob and has no idea how to become this persona - even if he seems to have an aptitude for it with the "my property" comment. ESPECIALLY love how things don't always go as planned, or aren't planned correctly, or don't get executed right...gah, it's like perfectly imperfect sex. Messy. My favorite.
Sequel to Shying Away. I liked Shying Away so I automatically bought New Tricks (Shying Away #2) only to find out it is simply a short story of a sex scene.
This is not a "new trick" rather Kate Sherwood just joined the ranks of authors who have made a fast buck ripping off readers with a sequel that does not advance the story and has no plot.
Aaron has it all planned out, the perfect evening for himself and Quinn and nothing is going to interrupt it not even Quinn. Quinn worries when he gets home and it’s all dark, until Aaron surprises him.
This is a beautiful little short story, it’s well written and delves in D/s but only with light rope play, and is used more as a ploy than serious D/s play.
I really do like the way that Aaron has arranged the night as Quinn doesn’t get what the true purpose for the night is really about until near the end, and the way that Aaron has gone about proving himself to Quinn was brilliant as I really don’t think any other way would have worked. So for those of us wondering what had become of Aaron and Quinn after Shying Away this is a wonderful little glimpse in their lives at a pivotal time for them.
I would recommend this to anyone who loved Shying Away and also to those who want a sweet short that is hot, erotic and romantic.
This was a tiny glimpse into Aaron and Quinn's relationship, after they've spent some time together and they've recently moved in a new apartment.
It's good to see Aaron gaining more confidence and staking his claim without losing his initial innocence and sensitivity, and a more insecure but very stable Quinn, who strives to please his partner within reason and comes to terms with what they have and what they mean to each other. The protagonists manage to convey everything with their activities or - lack thereof in Quinn's case - and their words. It's obvious they've both come a long way since the first book and this is one more small and sensual step further.
Kate Sherwood's writing style is the same as usual. She lets the emotions shine even through what seems like just another story with sex, and despite the shortness of it, there was nothing rushed or over-the-top about it.
Reviewed by Kerri: I didn't read the first part of this story, but I feel the need to after reading this short by Kate Sherwood.
The sex is hot and interesting. The characters each have well developed personalities that shine through even in 31 pages which can be hard for any writer to achieve within a limited word count. Yet, Ms. Sherwood manages to do that, and much more.
If you like a story that's a little bit outside the norm with lots of spice, this might be a good read for you. It was for me.
I really like Kate's stuff, that's a known fact. I liked Shying Away very much, and I found this little story a good continuation. I liked the bits that were funny and the bits that were hot, but I especially loved how it truly managed to get into the issues of the characters, despite being in an established relationship already. Nicely done, as always.
A very cute short with Aaron and Quinn from Shying Away. We all knew that Quinn was not quite convinced Aaron knew if he really did love him. So Aaron takes it into his own hands and shows Quinn how much he really does love him. Very nicely done Aaron!
I'm sure if you'd read this one right away it would have been good and made sense. But I'm reading this months after finishing Shying Away and I just couldn't reconnect with the characters quickly enough for this to do anything for me.
I adored Shying Away, so it was great to see Quinn and Aaron again in this short. It's really only a small look into their life, but it was still really nice ;)
