“Designed for practitioners and mental health workers, as well as students training to be mental health workers, I am confident that the publication of Working Together: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mental Health and Wellbeing Principles and Practice marks a watershed in the treatment of Indigenous mental health issues.” Tom Calma, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner
A new book on social and emotional wellbeing Working Together: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mental Health and Wellbeing Principles and Practice, edited by Nola Purdie, Pat Dudgeon and Roz Walker was released in July 2010. It was developed by the Australian Council for Educational Research and the Kulunga Research Network, Telethon Institute for Child Health Research with funding through the Office for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health, Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing. The book offers a high quality, comprehensive examination of issues and strategies influencing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mental health and social and emotional wellbeing.
I found this book for a school essay and it is a great comprehensive work encompassing the history of colonialism, western psychology and how it differs from aboriginal philosophy, while also highlighting past and present policies impacting aboriginal mental health. I have a feeling I will be using this a lot in my bachelor of psychology.
This is a fantastic resource. It's also available online, so there's no excuse for anyone in the field not to read it! It's a really good introduction to Indigenous perspectives and the historical and policy context of issues facing Indigenous Australians.
