The Galactic Zookeeper's Guide to Heists and Husbandry

Rate this book
For eight years, Saffron Savage has been stuck on a dilapidated zoo-planet on the outskirts of the galaxy. Her mountains of overdue student loans make it impossible to afford the cost of leaving, and her sleazy coworkers force her to work demoralizing jobs on a daily basis. Desperate to escape, she hatches a scheme that might just be crazy enough to steal the zoo's rare, two-headed llama and sell it to the highest bidder. When the poorly planned theft lands Saffron and her stolen companion as unwitting stowaways on an outbound ship, she must pose as an animal rights activist on a mission to return the animal to its home planet. To her surprise, the ride comes with some perks - an instant chemistry with Captain Michael Reyes and burgeoning friendships with the ship's motley, animal-loving crew. Other than the lie that's snowballing out of control, Saffron finds herself settling into this quirky, ship-bound life. If only the buyer wasn't the most notorious, cut-throat mob boss in the galaxy. Or there wasn't a warrant out for her arrest. The Galactic Zookeeper's Guide to Heists and Husbandry is a fast-paced space romp about second chances, rediscovering purpose, and finding family in unexpected places.

"The Galactic Zookeeper's Guide to Heists and Husbandry" by A.C. Huntley is an epic space opera that revolves around hapless zoologist/zookeeper, Saffron Savage. I love space opera novels and was sold on this one from the very first line. Throw in exotic animals, adventures galore, and a bit of humor, and you've got me hooked!

As one of only three women on the backwater zoo-planet where she was stuck for eight years, the work was not what Saffron had dreamed of. Instead of taking care of the animals, she had to shovel their waste. So, when her ex offered her a way out of the planet, she grabbed the chance without thinking twice. All she had to do was steal a umemeh, a rare, two-headed llama, and sell it to a mob boss. How hard could it be?

Posing as an animal rights activist and sneaking into the ship of the handsome Captain Michael Reyes, she needs to convince him and his crew of her good intentions, escape the clutches of an angry mobster, and stay out of danger. Not easy when there is a warrant out for her arrest and high demand for her umemeh.

Let me start by saying that I loved the book and would love a sequel. Thrilling adventures through outer space, encounters with space pirates, and unexpected mishaps made for an exciting read! One thing I particularly enjoyed about this book was how easily I was able to immerse myself in the world. Another was the writing, the plot, and the way the characters came to life. Fred, the umemeh, and Otis, the Al, offered comic relief, and I loved it!

The story was told in the present tense from the first POV of Saffron Savage. Unfortunately, I didn't connect with her until the last third part of the book. She was not an easy character to like, as she whined a lot, blamed others for her actions, and pitied herself. However, she grew on me throughout the course of the book, and by the end, I found myself rooting for her. The author wove a riveting tale that held me spellbound till the end. I greatly enjoyed the book and highly recommend it!

i was provided an arc of this book via netgalley in exchange for a honest review. thank you to the publisher, the author and netgalley. all thoughts are my own.

before anything else, keep in mind that these are my thoughts and are worth just that.

actual rating: 1.5, rounded up.

i debated a lot about what to write for this review because truth is, had i not received this as an arc, i don't know if i would have finished this, so i'll keep this brief because it was mainly a matter of "it just didn't work for me". let's start with what did work for me: i really liked the world created in this world. i love sci-fi, i love reading of other planets and ships, so that was great. the writing worked fine as well, that was on the list of things i enjoyed.

as to the rest... i can't say i particularly liked saffron as a character. i found her frustrating, and things were simplified too much for my taste. the whole discussion of people doing bad things because they see no other choice was reduced to a "well there's always a choice" and that was that. saffron's alcoholism ended up being completely dropped after a while, instead of explored, and the treatment of it during it, by a doctor too, was not good. take this part with a grain of salt, though, because i don't have first hand experience with it, so my take here may be worthless. there's also juliet and, i'll just say that writing her as 'haha look she's flirty and wears pink' and never developing her past making fun of her because she's girly didn't make me like saffron more.

the plot was fine, overall, but it was the way the themes weren't handled with more depth that kind of threw me off a loop. and saffron's character was... frankly, it just didn't work for me. again, because i don't like writing negative reviews for arcs i requested, i always want to love the book, but this is just my experience with this book, it just didn't work for me.

I expected something outside the normal and that is what I got. At first, I was having a hard time getting into the story, even thought of not finishing it. Patience paid off, though it took almost half the book for me to get involved. Was it the writing style? My expectations?

Definitely worth the read as I watched Saffron Savage find a life worth living, since her life on Hialeah made her so desperate, she would even traffick one of the animals she cared for, an umemeh, sort of a two headed llama. She lied, she betrayed, she stole, she would stop at nothing to get what she wanted.

I watched her go from a job that stole her soul to second chances and finding enemies that became friends, and more.

The last half of the book was a winner. I got in the flow, from her struggle to deliver the umemeh to a notorious mobster, to meeting Captain Reyes and his crew, to finding a home. We have space battles, a little romance, and a crass, belligerent woman who finally had me laughing and supporting her decisions as she comes to the realization that not everyone is out to get her.

The Galactic ZOOKEEPER'S GUIDE TO HEISTS AND HUSBANDRY is a rollicking adventure that combines the best of science fiction with a generous dash of humor. While the book excels in its comedic elements and light-hearted approach to the genre, it falls short in its lack of robust sci-fi world-building and concept construction.

One of the standout aspects of this book is its ability to bring a smile to readers' faces with its witty and irreverent tone. The author's comedic prowess shines through the narrative, offering a refreshing break from the seriousness often associated with science fiction. The author's clever writing style and sharp dialogue make for an engaging and enjoyable read.

Furthermore, the book successfully satirizes various sci-fi tropes and conventions, adding an extra layer of enjoyment for fans of the genre. It pokes fun at interstellar diplomacy, alien civilizations, and even the grandiose visions of cosmic exploration.

However, where the book falls short is in its limited world-building and concept construction. While the humorous take on sci-fi is its strength, the narrative fails to delve deeply into the intricacies of the galactic setting. The universe presented feels shallow, lacking the depth and richness that is often expected in science fiction. The author's ability to inject comedy into the genre is commendable and provides a fresh and welcome addition to the sci-fi landscape.

Additionally, the book features an array of colorful and memorable characters that add to the overall enjoyment. From the eccentric aliens to the endearing zoo animals, each character is well-drawn and contributes to the comedic atmosphere.

Its humor and satirical take on sci-fi tropes make it an entertaining read, guaranteed to bring smiles and laughter. However, the book falls short in terms of world-building and concept construction, leaving the universe feeling underdeveloped. Nevertheless, for those seeking a comedic escape into a zany intergalactic adventure, this book will not disappoint.

**I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. **

It just so happens that I am an actual zookeeper, so I was extra excited to read this book. It was smart, sarcastic, sassy, silly in all the right ways, and an enjoyable romp. Think Hitchhikers Guide meets Spaceballs.

I have never read anything so refreshingly new and out there. I mean - a two headed llama?! And the crazy part is it totally works. At first I felt sympathetic for Savage, then repulsed by her, then I related to her so hard. Somewhere in the ludicrous (and I mean that in the best way) twists and turns of the journey, she slipped into my heart and stayed there. As did Fred.

My only complaint is that the resolution didn't really make sense. It was not as strong as the rest of the storytelling, and felt like a rushed tying up of loose ends rather than a neatly folded denouement. Also, it was hard to get a sense of how much time elapsed throughout the escapade. At some point, Savage realizes she was on the run for two "days" and that startled me because Time was very much suspended and then all of a sudden it was of the essence towards the end of the story. I found that jarring.

One of the things I very much loved was how authentically true Savage stayed to herself. She unapologetically expressed herself in her way of communicating regardless of who she was talking to. I liked that, for a change, a woman doesn't subsume her Self when she's crushing on someone else or try to be different. I hope people are inspired to read this and use the way the relationships develop as an example.

Really enjoyed the book and would recommend if you are in the mood for something quirky and different.

Fazit:
Trotz großen Potenzials schaffte es „The Galactic Zookeeper’s Guide to Heists and Husbandry“ leider nicht, mich zu überzeugen. Neben verpassten Chancen für Charakterentwicklung gibt es auch unnötige sexistische Darstellungen von Charakteren.

This book was so much fun! I absolutely loved the way all the animals were things that don't exist on earth- it's like a world full of unicorns, only they're not unicorns specifically because that's too much of a cliché.

The characters were complex and the emotions felt real. Overall it was just a fun romp and I enjoyed my time with these characters. The story wrapped up nicely, so I'm not left wondering if the characters are okay.

Saffron Savage has the worst luck and the worst attitude but damn, she is the most fun! This is a wild zany rocket ship of a book with Douglas Adams vibes and a great found family arc. I really enjoyed it and hope there’s more to come for Saffron, Captain Hotpants Reyes and the crew of the Waterloo.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this eARC!

Actual rating: 2.5 rounded up

Going based off the description and title, I (mistakenly) assumed this book would be a cozy, quirky, sci-fi adventure. It has some of these elements, but not enough for me to consider it a true “cozy fantasy/sci-fi” read. I think another reviewer put it well by describing it as similar to someone telling you that they have a funny story, but instead of it being humorous it links back to some deep trauma and abuse.

Saffron Savage as a main character felt unlikable to me for the majority of the book, and though I see the trauma and abuse she experienced as a foundational building block to her brash and caustic personality, these themes often felt rushed, pushed to the side, or used for humor - namely her alcoholism. The pacing of the book felt off, and though I feel like the last fourth was the best, it did feel rushed and it took a long time to get to that point. The other characters never felt fully fleshed out, and I had a difficult time rooting for the MC and main love interest to get together by the end of the book. I still don’t quite understand how they ended up together, and the main love interest’s backstory felt haphazardly thrown in for development’s sake rather than a natural progression of their relationship.

Listen, I need a sequel to this immediately because this book was FANTASTIC! I am beyond impressed that this is the author's debut novel. I was not expecting it to be so friggin funny, but it hooked me immediately from the beginning.
It was everything I could want in a comedic space opera. The world building was impressive, the storyline was tight, the characters were well developed and the author even made me care WAY too much about a dumb two headed llama. I'm so looking forward to reading more work by this author!

This was decent. I went in expecting it to be a quirky sci-fi adventure and it was. However, Saffron Savage was extremely judgmental, potty mouthed, rude, and unlikeable. Even though we were given a look into why she was the way she was, it didn’t really make me feel for her. There were also a lot of things that were introduced and ignored. As an example: her alcoholism.

The pacing also felt a bit off and the end of the book felt really rushed.
Especially the romance between Reyes and Saffron. It didn’t feel believable and by the end I thought I had missed a chapter by mistake because there didn’t really feel like a moment of understanding when they switched from enemies to lovers.

I received an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher Bena House in exchange for an honest review.

The Galactic Zookeeper's Guide to Heists and Husbandry is a fun and relatable space romp, of feeling trapped between bad choices and worse choices, of trying to stay true to your values despite being in a horrible situation - even when the situation is of your own making.

A story of forgiveness, of community.

Saffron Savage (Ronnie to her ex, weasel and Savvy to a crew that she happens to stowaway aboard their cargo transporter early in the story) is a xeno-zoologist drowning in debt, stuck on the zoo planet of Hialeah where she is one of only 3 female workers. Which means that Saffron experiences a lot - LOT - of sexual harassment. At the beginning of our story, Saffron is beat down, depressed, hopeless, helpless and trapped. When her ex Weasel comes t0 her with a scheme to steal the extremely rare and endangered umemeh from the zoo in exchange for enough money to get her off Hialeah and out of debt? She can't resist. But not with helping Weasel - nope, that asshole's screwed her over and she's NOT about to give him a chance to screw this up for her. So she ditches him and takes the job over herself. And finds that she's in way, way, way over her head with no idea how to get herself out of the mess she keeps digging herself further & further into.

As someone with a wildlife biology degree, drowning in student loan debt? OOF, Savvy is relatable as hell. Having to take a mediocre job, not getting the well-paying ones, high competition for the good ones, not being "good enough" for them because there's so few of them? OOF, I say. OOF. I love Savvy. I can completely relate to how she got to where she did.

If you enjoy plans where everything goes wrong (until it somehow goes right), unlikely lovers, adversaries to lovers, found family and redemption arcs? The Galactic Zookeeper's Guide to Heists and Husbandry is for you.

TWs for sexual harassment, allusion to rape (in the past, not said outright or described), animal death, drug use, alcohol abuse, drugging others

Saffron is working at an intergalactic zoo and struggling to keep on top of her debt and living expenses. When an opportunity prevents itself to make a buttload of money by escaping and selling a rare creature to the highest bidder, she finally sees a way to way to start fresh. Her poorly hatched plan goes awry when she is caught stowing away with the creature and has to pose as the creature’s liberator to avoid imprisonment. Saffron and her unwitting companion are on the run, undercover, and being hunted by one of the most dangerous people in the galaxy.

Bottom line - I hate the main character. Saffron is a pick-me girl who just comes across as really obnoxious. I think the concept of this book has potential but it needed serious editing and a more compelling cast of characters. I enjoyed the quirks of the creatures at the beginning but this got old fast and I was kind of over the ‘ew this animal is disgusting’ attitude. The romance also did nothing for me. I wouldn’t recommend this book.

*I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley*

With cover artwork reminiscent of SciFi GOAT Douglas Adams, TGZGHH sets a high bar for itself. And I’m happy to report that it solidly hits the mark, threading the needle between comedy and science fiction with a sympathetic, but flawed main character who you grow to love along the way. I hope we see more from AC Huntley in the future.

Saffron Savage has found herself in an impossible situation…. and shows incredible aptitude for making it increasingly worse, in spite of the cast of characters inexplicably willing to help her.

It’s a wild, often hysterical romp through the Galaxy a la hitchhikers guide but with less British sensibility and waaaaay more cursing… like if Gideon the ninth and Murderbot had a baby. A sweary, ill-tempered baby, with a knack for sometimes keeping a two-headed llama alive.

The world building is creative and entertaining, even though the pacing can sometimes be off. I wish more of Saffron’s backstory had been shared earlier in the novel, if for nothing other than to provide context for the horrible, horrible choices she makes. Overall, very pleased to have read another insanely weird space opera from an up and coming writer!

The one word that pops into mind when describing this book is “fun.” This was an incredibly fun read. The action is fast and zany, characters are goofy, the umemeh is fantastic and disgusting all at once, and everyone gets exactly what they deserve.

(If swearing upsets you, this is one to skip but it is in character. Yes, it’s over the top but that’s the point.)

This book is pretty much exactly as described in the blurb. What isn't described is that the POV character is so immensely unlikable. Which the author does make an effort (successful at times) to have us feel sympathy/empathy for the main character I found her incessant complaining, pointless profanity, and lovesick distractions to get old quickly. She does horrible things, and it is only because so many of the other characters are so forgiving and willing to offer-look her many and obvious flaws.
The writing was ok, reminding me of YA novels, and the story itself was simple with a fairly obvious ending. I think that this would be a good book for those who would like some light sci-fi where they will recognize every reference (society hasn't really changed since 2020 in this book... except for the space travel). Definitely not for the hard sci-fi lover.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advance copy of this book.

This galactic zookeeper is terrible at both heists and husbandry. She shouldn't be guiding anyone.

As a former professional aquarist (ie, zookeeper equivalent at an aquarium) who loves heist novels, I was very excited to read this book. I was hoping for a clever, funny, well-constructed romp of a story. Unfortunately it isn't any of those things. For one, I am deeply offended by the premise of this novel. What the author gets right about husbandry is that it's often underpaid and full of shit, both literally and figuratively. You also generally know that going into it. No animal husbandry professional is going to traffick and mistreat an animal the way Saffron does, let alone an endangered, highly-protected species. That is ridiculous. Some people might be willing or able to look past that, but I am professionally and personally insulted and I refuse.

The Galactic Zookeeper’s Guide to Heists and Husbandry sounded like a really fun romp through space with a two headed llama and a questionable zookeeper. I really liked the idea of animals in space, and the concept just sounded like a ton of fun, so I was very interested in reading it. Unfortunately, that’s the most interesting it ever was for me. Oh, the main character’s voice was fun, but it started to grate on me after a while. Though, as usual, the second half was much more interesting than the first half.

I really liked the idea of a zookeeper getting tangled up with a mob boss who ended up having a crazy sort of base and being, secretly, on the run with a two headed llama. I couldn’t wait to see how it all played out, and I was intrigued by the romance. What I got, unfortunately, was just a ton of potty humor. Now, I can see how it might be funny, but I have two kids under the age of ten and I am perpetually living in a potty joke right now, so I highly doubt I’m the right audience for this book. It just went on and on with literally no end in sight. I feel like a huge part of this book was supposed to be kept afloat by these endless potty jokes, and I was not amused.

Potty aside, I did like the characters. They were a bit cardboard, but they had distinct, fun personalities. It was easy to keep most of them straight in my head, because a spaceship’s crew is not small. I felt a little betrayed by the promise of romance, though, because I’m pretty sure he hated her for most of the book no matter what he tried to say later. I just kept waiting and waiting for it to happen, but it doesn’t really go anywhere until the second half, when things really go sideways. Fortunately, I think the romance really started to happen after she came clean, and I’m glad she eventually turned around. Her growth in the second half was great, though, and I felt like that made wading through all the poop worth it.

Overall, I can see where this might be a fun story. There were interesting characters with fun personalities, a terrific two headed llama that was obviously my favorite character, travels through space, and actual growth in a main character. It’s just that the constant potty jokes pulled this down a lot for me. So, it isn’t a terrible book; it’s just not for me.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a review copy. All opinions expressed are my own.

2.5, rounding up because that last quarter really saved the book, to be honest. From the title, the cover, and the description, you would think this would be a funny, quirky book with hijinks, but it ends up being more like the book equivalent of someone going "oh, I've got a funny story" and you stare in horror because they've gone through enough abuse and trauma as to think that a lesser example of it is humorous.

Saffron wants little more than to get out of her job and away from the planet it's on, but the mountains of student debt and lack of help from outside sectors means she's stuck. As an added bonus, her coworkers are such pieces of trash that she can't believe anyone would actually want to help without an ulterior motive. So when she's got the chance to get out with just a little bit of illegal activity, she jumps at it, ending up in a web of lies that only increases. Except so does her desperation, and being in first-person, we feel every ounce of that desperation and hopelessness. Despite the tough exterior and foul temper she's had to built due to her job beating her down, she doesn't want to be someone who hurts other people, but she finds herself in that position again and again with no seeming way out. Unfortunately, it's the case for about 60% of the book. She has her reasons, and the people she meets react with appropriate horror when she lets bits of her previous experiences slip, but she still can't break out of it or trust that anyone will actually help, and since we're in her head, you get a sense of helplessness as a reader as well and insecurity that the story actually will turn out okay.

I will say that once Saffron breaks out of that mindset, things turn up quite and bit and it does turn into an almost fun heist scenario; there were a few times that I actually laughed out loud, and it was nice to feel the cloud of darkness lift from the narrative. But that's not until around 75% in, which is quite a slog to get to, given everything you might be expecting. If you look at it not from the angle of a comedy, it's a story about Saffron breaking free of the shackles her past and being isolated in a shitty situation have trapped her in and learning to trust and find her place again. It's more satisfying from that angle, but that's not what the title or description would lead you to.

Thank you to the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This story was described as a fast-paced space romp about second chances, rediscovering purpose, and finding family in unexpected places. I have opinions about what I liked and disliked about this story.
I’ll begin with what I liked. The opening chapter shows some promise when we meet the narrator, Saffron Savage, who has been using her degree to work on a zoo-planet that is barely surviving. She has been using all her skill to salvage some sort of good life for the animal residents of the zoo, despite the efforts of the zoo’s manager to do the absolute least necessary to squeeze a maximum profit from the business. So, when she becomes aware of a plan to steal the zoo’s prize exhibit, a two-headed llama, she sees an opportunity to escape her situation. Some zany antics were expected to ensue, and they did, but…
Now what I found problematic. Every chapter has multiple opportunities for the narrator to explain what a deplorable human being she is, working very hard to get the other characters to agree with her assessment. Because so much emphasis is made of this, it became really difficult not to agree, and then truly not care what happened to her. Secondly, I am an adult, and am not unfamiliar with profanity. But when at least 5 times other characters reprimand the narrator of her use of vulgarity, and she proceeds to up the usage, this seemed excessive to me. Each “I’m an awful human being who can’t do much more than swear” outburst made be put down the story for a bit. While not a long story, if the profanity was removed, the book would be almost half it’s length.
I truly wanted to like this book. It has many things I can enjoy, but because of the effort put into making me dislike the narrator so much, I was unable to shake off that distaste by the conclusion.

I wanted to like this book.

Such a cool concept. Talented narrator. Great title. Indie/self(?) published. New author. A lot of things right up my alley.

Let's get the good stuff out of the way:

Snappy writing. Action moves along at a brisk pace. Writing itself, not awful. Plot is not exactly inspired but not awful for pulp. Narrator did fine, not her fault her voice was whiney and poisonously sarcastic all the time. Ok, now we are bleeding into the negative.

Let's meet the main character. At every single turn I rooted for Saffron purely because her outcomes seemed tied with Fred's, the endangered space llama. Our Heroine had made some poor life choices, had the best intentions starting out and has clearly been sexually harassed if not assaulted as just par for the course. She's secretly very lonely and a victim of a toxic chauvanistic culture. There is a heart of gold deep under the selfishness and substance abuse. But, still... Saffron loves sex, booze, money and animals in that order.

She is caustically snarky about how much of a victim she is, how little choice she actually has in everything but EVERY major decision she makes until the end of the book is made drunk off of her ass. Yeah. Duh. Drunk Saffron makes stupid, selfish choices. I refuse to believe there was no other way out of her situation. But drunk Saffron couldn't find one, and as she is the narrator, neither could the reader. I have very little patience for these kinds of characters. She was unlikeable to the extreme.

I can overlook the unsympathetic narrator if we had some eyecandy likeable side characters. Instead, we get cardboard facades, flat characters who do not feel real. In particular "hotpants" captain. Also, If I have to hear the word "hotpants" one more time I'm going to throw my phone.

So. Other than the two headed llama, no relatable characters to follow, making this found family story shallow and almost unreadable.

My feelings for this book is complicated.
I mean, with a title like that I'm kind of expecting both romcom vibes and a person who loves animals.

That wasn't really what you got. You got an foul tempered and foul mouthed women who was actually traumatized and used to be a good loving animal lover. 8 years on a zoo planet from hell ruined her. But the thing is, that wasn't really outlined in the beginning. All we got was "greedy corporate zoo doesn't care about their animals"
You slowly got introduced to the depth of her trauma and how ruined she had become from it.

But, as an animal lover myself, seeing the title really set some expectations. And then reading about a woman who doesn't seem to like animals a lot (she constantly swears and talks bad about them), and then there was the incident with the bats where she figured out they were sick and knew how to cure them and just STRAIGHT UP DIDN'T TELL ANYBODY. I was furious!

I almost dropped this book so many times in that first 50%, the only reason I didn't was because it was an ARC read.

In the end, I'm happy I did finish it. I'd even read the sequel. It got a little better after the 50% and the last 20% was really pure perfection. I got teary eyed twice!

But really, the title. I cannot underline my disappointment enough. This wasn't a light hearted story, it wasn't romcom, it wasn't even very funny. It was a serious story about the desperate lows a desperate (and broken) woman goes to when she's given up all hope and I can see other people will have the same misunderstanding from the title and blurb as me.
