A Gentleman of Dubious Reputation

Rate this book
A matter of matrimony...
Lord Julian Caldicott is summoned to the family seat by his ducal brother, whose bachelorhood is imperiled by the very determined Lady Clarissa Valmond. As the only titled Eligible the hostesses avoid including on their guest lists, Julian has little sympathy for the duke’s situation. He nonetheless agrees to lend a hand, because Clarissa is the last person who should be wearing the Caldicott family tiara.

And mayhem! Matters take a nasty turn when Clarissa’s brother, a talented artist, goes missing shortly before his debut London exhibition. Julian must unravel conflicting motives, dishonest witnesses, confusing evidence, old lies, and the real threats facing the duke if he’s to find the errant viscount before a fate worse than ruin befalls both surviving Caldicott brothers.

Grace Burrowes started writing as an antidote to empty nest and soon found it an antidote to life in general. She is the sixth out of seven children, raised in the rural surrounds of central Pennsylvania. Early in life she spent a lot of time reading romance novels and practicing the piano. Her first career was as a technical writer and editor in the Washington, DC, area, a busy job that nonetheless left enough time to read a lot of romance novels.

It also left enough time to grab a law degree through an evening program, produce Beloved Offspring (only one, but she is a lion), and eventually move to the lovely Maryland countryside.

While reading yet still more romance novels, Grace opened her own law practice, acquired a master's degree in Conflict Transformation (she had a teenage daughter by then) and started thinking about writing.... romance novels. This aim was realized when Beloved Offspring struck out into the Big World a few years ago. ("Mom, why doesn't anybody tell you being a grown-up is hard?")

Grace eventually got up the courage to start pitching her manuscripts to agents and editors. The query letter that resulted in "the call" started out: "I am the buffoon in the bar at the RWA retreat who could not keep her heroines straight, could not look you in the eye, and could not stop blushing--and if that doesn't narrow down the possibilities, your job is even harder than I thought." (The dear lady bought the book anyway.)

4 full stars !!!!

2nd installment in The Lord Julian mysteries, you can read it as a standalone, but I suggest you start from book #1 since the personal story of the main character is as fundamental as the mystery talked about in the book.

The mystery is certainly more interesting than the bland mystery covered in the first book, however, unlike normal mysteries or cozy mysteries, Lord Julian's personal events, past and present, are the real focus of the book, what made it really interesting reading and what motivates me to continue the series.

The mystery to be solved in each book is not the reason why I would recommend this series, while the feelings and emotional growth of the character, in my opinion, are the real magnet that will keep you glued to these pages.

___ THE PLOT in short ___ Regency era, England.
Lord Julian Caldicott is summoned to the family seat by his brother Arthur, the duke of Waltham, whose bachelorhood is imperiled by the very determined Lady Clarissa Valmond.

_______________

__ THE MYSTERY __
As I have already said, it is much more complicated than the previous book and therefore more enjoyable for the reader who loves suspense and difficult puzzles to solve and I must admit that until the end, I had no idea whether the missing person was alive or dead and all my hypotheses about what could have really happened were cleverly diverted by the new clues that the writer introduced through Julian's investigations.
There was only a very brief moment, towards 75% through the book, in which I felt exasperated at the fact that we didn't manage to discover something truly concrete and truthful, but this is part of the game of suspense and shortly after finally the truth has begun to make its way through the different tracks followed by our hero.

__ THE NARRATION __
The book is narrated in the first person by Julian and both the touching part of his story and the witty jokes that promptly lighten the atmosphere, made me feel closer to the character to the point of perceiving him as a dear friend of mine who is telling me the his story.

In addition to the magnificent job that the author did in balancing seriousness and touching details, with funny scenes and witty dialogues, another thing that fascinated me in the narrative is the constant similarity with military life and its rules that Julian makes in considering life situations and the people around him.
In fact he has never stopped feeling like a British army officer and in particular a reconnaissance officer even though he now lives in peacetime.
You will find his similes very interesting and truthful.

___ MAIN CHARACTER and SIDE CHARACTERS ___
I really enjoyed meeting up with some of the characters from the first book and getting to know Julian's brother better, who in the previous episode was only mentioned and remembered in the thoughts of the main character who I really grew fond of.

__ LORD JULIAN is a veteran of the war against Napoleon and like all veterans he suffers not only from physical debilitation but also from emotional trauma due to the cruel battles and above all to the death of his brother (who was in the same regiment) and the psychological torture he suffered when he was a prisoner of the French.
In the first episode we saw Julian return to normal life and take the first steps towards recovering himself and who he was.
In this second episode it is really pleasant to see how he overcomes his personal limits with determination and the desire to recover personal affections, to clear his name from the shame of the accusation of betrayal which is always whispered about in aristocratic circles (but actually he had been acquitted) and how he knows how to put his reconnaissance skills, the role he held in the army, to good use in investigation.

What I love about this character is that he gives a lot of importance to family ties, friendships and feelings without being a victim of those who treat him with malevolence.
He is a young man (29 years old) with a heart of gold but who knows how to stand up to those who try to provoke or humiliate him.
I love the fact that he is a lover of books and culture and that at the same time, he is a young man of action who, despite having grown up among the comforts of the aristocracy, knows how to get by in any outdoor survival situation ready for any eventuality.

I love his generosity: in the first book he immediately tells us that he gave up his marriage to Hyperia and in the second book he explains why.
He always puts the needs of his loved ones first even if they conflict with his own feelings and this makes him a "gentleman" in the true sense of the term.
The deep friendship with Hyperia can be felt throughout the book and the reader cannot help but root for this couple who in my opinion are made to stay together.

__ SIDE CHARACTERS ___
The supporting characters are all well delineated, whether they play a major role or a minor role in the episode told in the book, the author manages to show us their soul and mind simply through dialogues and actions.
Among the characters met previously, Hyperia gives an affectionate attention to Julian which cannot help but warm the hearts of the reader (as well of Julian), while the godmother Ophelia and the young Atticus bring joy and "verve", completely reciprocated by Lord Julian who has a great sense of humor (another characteristic that I love about him).

The character who added something new is Arthur, Julian's older brother and Duke of Waltham.
The character surprised me, because from previous stories he seemed like a good person, but also all of a piece and a bit boring.
Instead, we discover that he is capable of deep feelings
both for Julian and in his private life and the relationship between the two brothers, which is shown in the book, a little playful and a little discovering each other's travails, It's really enjoyable to read.

Of course, I'll keep on reading the following books in the series as well.

RECOMMENDED for: those who love light mysteries, but also those who want to delve deeper into the souls of the characters and the atmosphere of the Regency era, made up not only of frivolities, but also of dramas and difficulties to overcome.

THANKS FOR READING my opinion and please forgive my English since it's not my native language.

Second book in the series that I am reading in order. The first 20% of the book recaps the history of the of the characters so it is not necessary to read the first book, but I recommend doing so because it is a good book. At the halfway point a cozy mystery develops when a neighbor's brother goes missing. The reason for Julian to search for said missing brother was the weakest part of the story. The last half I really enjoyed. Characters back story and the oh so slow romance are wonderful. Interesting info about Harry comes to light. Can I rate sections of the book? YES! First part 4* middle 3* last 5*

3.5⭐️ A bit of a letdown after the first book, but not a surprise. We’re back to standard Burrowes.

What worked:
😍 Julian and his relationship with his brother, Arthur.
😍 Hyperia was awesome!
😍 Atticus was back!

What didn’t:
-First 18% was devoted to rehashing what we learned in the first book. I get it’s for the newcomers, but the phrase, “A long walk on a short pier,” comes to mind—forty pages out of 267!
-Around the halfway mark the mystery lost its sizzle.
-Not enough Hyperia!
-Not enough Atticus!

Nitpick:
-Burrowes can’t resist inserting military jargon into dialogues. It’s so overdone. And it wasn’t only Julian. Hyperia and Arthur did it too. Why? Why? Why?

Anyway, I’m hanging in for the next two books. 🤞

So Book 2. My opinion is pretty much the same as for Book 1: prose a bit difficult to get into, but brilliantly elegant prose nevertheless; cozy mystery; and eminently sympathetic main character.

I liked the plot of this one better. I think it was all the travelling which was gave much more breathing space than the detestable house party of Book 1. The solution to the mystery was once again on the mundane side but somehow GB made it work by keeping the pages turning. Lord Julian shined even better here because he is more confident in his health and in his wits. Though his frequent laying aside of polite manners was a bit rattling (e.g. searching into a lady's room, disclosing all sorts of information to third parties). The world building in this series is slowly taking shape and though not very exciting in essence, it has a gentle quality that I like enough to continue reading.

P.S. My 100th book of 2024! GR Challenge done - 06 July 2024!

Great follow-up to the first book, A Gentleman Fallen on Hard Times, It is clear that this is a series that should be read in order.
In this one we meet Lord Julian's older brother Arthur, the Duke of Waltham. And learn more about Harry, the middle brother who died during the war.

Burrowes' books have always been hit or miss with me. This series is proving to be a winner.

Now, to track down the next two books...

Note to fans of Regency era mysteries with a touch of romance: These first two mysteries may have been murder-free, but the author managed to pack an emotional punch and a clever mystery into each despite the relatively short page count. If you are a fan of CS Harris, give these books a try.

Another lively read from Grace Burrowes. Lord Julian has become stronger in himself but a happening with Lady Clarissa (his brother Harry’s fiancé) whom Harry had warned him against, has Julian hightailing it down to his brother Arthur’s (the Duke) side. Of course Lady Ophelia his godmother and Hestia turn up.
Clarissa’s brother,a talented artist, has disappeared just as he’s about to mount a major exhibition in London

This series is developing in a very interesting way and I enjoy many aspects of it- beyond Julian and Perry’s relationship, the relationship between Julian and his brother is moving in good direction. Also I enjoy the fact that (so far) murder has not played a part, rather scheming and plots. Attention has been paid to why Julian has skills suitable to sleuthing. Will definitely be continuing on with this series.

I was quite taken with the first book in this series, A Gentleman has Fallen on Hard Times, and this second entry has lived up to that promise. The plot was twisty enough to be interesting and the solution unfolded logically. It was interesting to learn more about the Duke and the deceased Harry, although the most was revealed about Julian himself as his recovery slowly progressed over the course of the book. Julian and Hypatia continue to be among my favourite literary characters and I look forward to reading more about their exploits and relationship in future books.

It may seem that despite my 5-star rating that I'm reserved in my enthusiasm for this book, and that's not actually true. It is, however, a reflection on the quality of Burrowes' writing that I can't help but emulate Julian's reserved and contained personality as I write this review. And to me, that says a lot about Burrowes' talent as an author. I eagerly await the series' next book.

The second installment of Lord Julian’s adventures was just as satisfying as the first.

Our intrepid hero is tasked with finding a young viscount and aspiring artist who has been reported missing by his sister. The young man was to be displaying his work at a show in London when he disappears from the family home to the dismay of his sister. Julian is tasked by his brother the Duke with tracking down the missing man, an endeavor that turns into a pursuit of the apparent runaway as revelations emerge of misdeeds by many of those closest to him.

The characters are well drawn and often less than honest, while the plot develops into a series of convoluted deceptions. Hyperia is back at Julian’s side providing insight, comfort, and the stability he so desperately needs. We also get to know Duke Arthur, his remaining brother who values his assistance with managing the family affairs. Julian again demonstrates his skills as a tracker and intelligence officer as he pulls back the layers to reach the core of the mystery.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable read and I look forward to the next adventure.

Lord Julian is summoned home by his brother. His brother wants him as a distraction from a local woman who had been escorted around town by their deceased brother. However, the ladies brother goes missing and may have come to bad end. Lord Julian must use all of his scouting skills developed under Wellington to get to the bottom of the disappearance.

Not as good as the first, but a satisfying read.

Regency Era. Family Seat of Caldicott Family. Caldicott Hall. Grace Burrowes’ A Gentleman of Dubious Reputation (The Lord Julian Mysteries, #2) began by confusing me. First, the dedication “To those having a bad war” made me say to myself “Whoever has a good war?” Especially after I read book 1 in this series which concentrated on how physically and mentally tormented Lord Julian Caldicott is upon his return from The Peninsula War and Waterloo where Napoleon suffered his magnificent defeat. At the conclusion of this book, I then understood to what dedication referred. Then I began to wonder to whom the title. As this book introduces two more male characters: one, the Duke of Waltham; two, Viscount Reardon; I was soon able to delete the Duke of Waltham, Arthur, Lord Julian’s oldest brother, but the question remained. Does the ‘Dubious Reputation’ belong to Lord Julian or Viscount Reardon? Julian is called upon to assist Viscount Reardon’s sister which he does admirably. In addition to this act, Lord Julian becomes a confidant of the Duke of Waltham. These happenings do not point to A Gentleman of Dubious Reputation. There is more, but the reader will discern all upon completion of this intriguing book. Then, of course, there is Atticus! 4.5 stars.

As I started reading this second instalment of the Lord Julian's mysteries, I immediately recognised the allusive, dry wit style of the first volume. It's so different to Grace Burrowes' other series. Yet, in many ways, it was less engaging than the first book. Lord Julian is getting better and seems to have made his peace after the trauma he endured while soldiering in France, but in a way, although one is pleased for him, it makes him a much more ordinary character. His relationship with Hyperia is more difficult to understand. How does he accept her mothering tendencies, now that he is more himself? Well, I know , the next development must be for him to recover his "manly humours" and then the couple may move on.
I felt two of the main characters were very much underused, Lady Ophelia and her machinations and Just Atticus, the endearing urchin who attached himself to Lord Julian.
The mystery itself was not really exciting and the denouement a bit lame. Still, let's see what the next volume brings; it looks as if the sainted dead brother Harry will help Julian to overcome his grief and guilt. let's see

A missing artist mystery, and much more.

I’m so hooked on this series now. I love the recurring characters and what we learn of their past and current personas.

The Hero is on an ongoing journey to discover who he is now after surviving the war. He is presented with a plea
to find a missing brother and this pushes his body and mind to its very limits as he’s still recovering his own strength. His support team is worried for him and their reactions and actions are endearing. These are the recurring characters I mentioned above, the hero’s brother the duke, his Godmother and his very close friend Hyperia, isn’t that the best name?

His efforts to find the missing artist brother becomes so frustrating and convoluted and at one point he is believed dead. What will this mean for the upcoming exhibition of his work. More burdens are heaped upon his sister’s shoulders, who reported him missing. The sister is a mystery herself, the reader cannot figure out just what she is and whether she should be supported, suspected, or given up on as she swings from managing to helpless fluff. Can she be both?

This isn’t a romance novel in the usual sense but there are budding relationships on a slow enticing journey to we hope, happiness. I’m loving it. Highly recommended series.

Book 2 didn't grab me as much as book 1, maybe because I enjoyed the house party setting more than this book's missing person plot. I liked meeting Arthur, and seeing the brothers navigate their relationship after everything that happened in the war. And I was happy to see Hyperia, Atticus, and Lady Ophelia again. Something that bothered me a little in the first book and more in the second was the level of candidness in the conversations, no matter who Julian was talking to or their rank. It didn't ring true to me, although to be fair, my sense of how things should be is mainly based on movies and other books. Regardless, revelations came more easily than I thought they should, and Lord Julian's blunt, commanding manner was off-putting at times. It may just be part of the author's characterization of Julian--he's good at getting the truth out of people, and part of that is his willingness to break conversational etiquette. And use a bunch of military metaphors when he's talking to people, I guess? That was a little weird. I think I can see what she's doing, but I don't know if it works all the time. I'm sticking with the series, because I'm interested in the larger mystery of Harry and what really happened in France. And I do like these characters and am rooting for Julian and Hyperia.

This is the second book of the series, and it cemented my conclusion that I really like this series. Its hero, Lord Julian, is a former reconnaissance officer in the Wellington Army. Now that the war is over, he is recuperating from his war injuries and simultaneously investigating mysteries he encounters. So far, none of the mysteries have been about murder. They were mostly financial chicanery, but for their victims, Lord Julian's help might mean a difference between life and death. And he always comes through, always finds the culprits and makes them pay for their greed.
Julian's dry wit is refreshing, his honesty gratifying, and his compassion warms my heart. An all-around wonderful protagonist, and he makes for a lovely book.

Whilst Lord Julian Caldicott was still tying up the ends of the mysteries at the Longacre’s country house party, he received a summons from his older brother, Arthur Caldicott, the Duke of Waltham, to hasten to Caldicott Hall.

Julian was frankly glad to have an excuse, so he hies himself to the family home. Of course, more puzzles and disappearances are waiting for him. Very soon Lady Ophelia and Miss Hyperia arrive at the Hall, and all are soon occupied by searching for the only son and heir of a neighbor, the Earl of Valoise.

Another very interesting and enjoyable adventure with Julian, whose health, both mental and physical, have improved — the countryside obviously agrees with him.

Another Family Crisis!

I realize that I have a different perspective on mysteries, I love them, I understand difference between cozy mysteries and the scarier subgenres, these are definitely the cozy mystery genre. These are family problems, or neighbors problems that put one in mind of Peyton Place, everything one sees is not as respectable as it should be, and when it isn't, hence the Lord Julian Mysteries. On one hand he can't remember his name, so he carries a piece of paper telling him who he is , as strange as this is, I have read two similar stories this year! You will love it if you like British House Parties, and cozy mysteries. I recommend. Thank you.

Listened to audio purchased on author's website.

Another great installment. The mystery was low stakes but the foundational character development was fantastic.

This book picks up right where book 1 left off. The teaser of the next story made me want to go straight to buy the next audio BUT... there are only 7 books. I need to pace myself. 😩

Multiple mysteries, subtly drawn characters, satisfying end

Love Lord Julian - his honesty, his knowledge of the character and conventions of the different social classes, his detailed observations, his wit, and his humility.

The mysteries unfold as Julian does his social duties, interacts with his brother Arthur - the Duke, and searches for Lord Reardon. The many people questioned by Julian mix fact and opinion, contradict each other, and complicate the investigation.

Everyone and everything Julian encounters provide multiple clues, which Julian sorts through to eventually uncover hidden agendas.

Our understanding of all the characters becomes nuanced, as does Julian's. As his most important relationships deepen, the answers to the mysteries are revealed.

Series: Lord Julian Mysteries #2
Publication Date: 11/3/23
Period: Regency
Number of Pages: 238

I loved the first book in this series so much that I was really fearful this book couldn’t live up to it. WRONG! This was an intriguing mystery filled with enough twists and turns to make it interesting. Couple that with just the right number of suspects and clues and – well, you’ve got another great entry into the series. I love seeing Julian grow and begin to come to grips with the outer and inner wounds from his captivity during the recent war. As you read the books, you can’t help but come to admire Julian for his strength of character, fortitude, self-deprecating sense of humor, and resilience. And – add to that – he’s becoming a great sleuth.

Julian has avoided the family seat as much as possible since his return from French captivity – mostly because, for him, it is haunted by his brother Harry. However, when he is summoned by his brother Arthur, the Duke of Waltham, he goes. It seems Lady Clarissa Valmond has set her cap for Arthur and he’s running scared. Lady Clarissa is one of the most exasperating and annoying females to ever be – but, is there more to her than meets the eye? What about her missing brother? Where are her parents – shouldn’t they be involved in helping to find her missing brother? Oh! My!

As readers, we made a pact with Julian to follow him through the events that unfolded during the story and to solve the mystery with him. That turned out to be an entertaining journey because the plot had plenty of twists and turns to keep us wondering and the surprising resolution bloomed before our eyes. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am already anxiously awaiting the next book in the series. I love Julian, but I also love the supporting cast members such as Hyperia (slow-burn romance there I hope), Lady Ophelia (Julian’s Godmother), and Arthur (Julian’s brother, the duke).

If you are looking for a great mystery with a wonderful cast of characters, then give this one a try. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did.

An enjoyable sequel, for fans of light historical mysteries. 3/5 stars.

First off, I'm a bit behind on writing reviews, so this is late due to that, not because of the book! Please don't be turned off by my rating. This may seem to some to be poor or not that good. But, I wouldn't say that. This is enjoyable, in really a popcorn style way (for me). The characters are well written, and the time period is well realized. There's a touch of romance, and who doesn't love that? The main issue I have is really that the mysteries are really just a backdrop. They're not super deep or complex, and in this one in particular, there's really not that much mystery. It felt quite clear what was going on and what was going to happen. Now, this really only applies to people like me who really love mystery. It is not poorly written at all, just not very deep. This brought down my overall enjoyment, and why it sits at a 3 star. I would still recommend this series though, and I think if you go in with the right expectations, there's lots to love! I'll definitely continue the series, and use it as a palate cleanser.

I would like to take a moment though to express how great Burrows has done with her character work here. One of my biggest issues in novels is that sometimes characters don't react when they feel like they should. For example, they are slighted for some reason. Even if the character normally would or should react to that, they don't. This leaves you frustrated with their character. Here however, the characters all feel like they fit in the world, while also reacting in ways you'd expect. Julian is sarcastic and sardonic, and while he is dealing with issues he needs to work through, he defends himself and those around him. Sure, there are some modern sentiments (which I don't really have a problem with), but I could believe Arthur, Julian, Ophelia, and Hyperia would all exist similar to their written form. Hyperia especially. A strong female character who doesn't feel anachronistic at any point. I just wish she was around more! So while the mystery may not hit for me, the character work is fantastic, and Burrows definitely deserves praise for that. Especially in a world where we get tons of low effort historical novels because it's hot right now.

Quick hits:
+ Characters are superb.
+ The writing and pacing is digestible and moves at a good pace.
+ Dialogue is snappy and engaging.
- The mystery doesn't really hit well, it's pretty simple and more of a backdrop.
- I wish some characters and their interactions were more present (looking at you Hyperia).

I am so glad I discovered this series! So many historical mysteries nowadays really focus on the women and how they buck convention. This one does have strong women as well, but they are less center stage. Instead, Lord Julian is the focus: a returned veteran of the Napoleonic wars and extremely damaged as a result of months as a prisoner of war. He's physically weakened (though improving), his hair has gone white, and his eyes are super sensitive to light. Plus, he's subject to bouts of 'forgetting' where he'll black out and wake up and not remember where he is -- or, indeed, WHO he is. Certainly problematic for the younger brother of a Duke. Further, there are rumors surrounding his captivity, and, to some, he is deemed a traitor. Still, he has the loyalty and friendship of Hyperia West, who he'd meant to make his wife before going off to war but now feels such a thing would be unfair to her.

Most of the above we learn in volume 1. Here we do get a few more details about Lord Julian's various disabilities, and meet his brother Arthur: the Duke. The only son in a neighboring household, that of an Earl, goes missing shortly before a major exhibition of his artwork which is, in fact really good. His elder sister begs assistance in finding him and Julian's particular skills are well suited so, on the authority of his brother (also the Lord Lieutenant of the count) he goes searching. But it turns out things are much more complicated than simply a runaway lord-ling. Turns out he's 'trifled' with more than one young lady of the area and there may be 'consequences' to that.

The writing is solid and the story is well told with well rounded characters and a satisfying ending. As she did with the first book, the very end of the final chapter hints at the next adventure -- not in a 'cliff hanger' sort of way; more as an enticement to keep reading. And I will.
