Novice private investigator Race Warren has seldom been out of Tennessee when he embarks to Alaska on what appears to be a routine missing person case. But he has a revelation in Anchorage after he is almost killed by a shadowy assassin. Knowing that the missing person has the answers, he tracks his quarry, ex-policeman Ron Billings, to a remote village in the North Slope. Here he meets a team of scientists studying a tribal cult involved in animal worship. The cult carries out secret ceremonies that might be connected to the mysterious death of a young native girl. As their investigation advances, the scientists suspect that a supernatural entity may be at work.

Warren at last finds Billings in a disastrous first encounter charged with suspicion and misunderstanding. Billings has his own quest, a search for his daughter Carrie taken by Russian traffickers. Warren and Billings unite for their own survival as they look for the daughter, trapped in a life of brutality and abuse. Their search leads them into the criminal underworld where they must partake in illicit operations but are able to free a young girl with information about Carrie. Then they are discovered, barely escaping with the girl as they set out for a destination 600 miles away. They are pursued by teams of Russian gunmen in a harrowing journey of danger, violence, and death. If they can get to Anchorage alive, the girl will be home, Warren and Billings will be closer to finding Carrie, and new light will be shed on North Slope mysteries.

I came across this one while trolling fellow GR member and friend, Thomas, read list. While the review was a good one, it was his mention of the AK environment and shapeshifters that had me adding the book to my to-read list. I love stories in AK and I’m a long-time fan of the paranormal.

The book summary pretty much lays out the entire premise as well as most of the plot so I’m not going to repeat any of that here. One of the things that I like about the crime thriller/murder mystery genres is the thrill of trying to figure out “whodunit”. With this book summary, we already know whodunit and we pretty much know why and it’s all just a matter of finding out how the story ends. Not sure why the publisher would put out a book summary like that or why a writer would approve it because it reveals so much of the storyline. What do I know though? I’m neither a writer nor a publisher; I’m just an avid reader who likes to fancy herself as an armchair detective.

There is also a secondary storyline of a team of anthropologists and a biologist, Dr Hartley, that are in AK to study the Inuit community in a desolate part of AK. Dr Hartley is also going to be collecting data on the wolves and the relationship that the Inuit community has with them. It is also rumored that a native shaman of the Inuit is engaging in some dark rituals resulting in shapeshifting; Dr Hartley has a history with this particular community. Enough said. None of this is a spoiler since it is all revealed in either the book summary or really early in the story.

I found the first half of the story kind of slow in many parts and I struggled to stay engaged. Around the halfway point, storylines begin to merge and the pace picks up and became the kind of story that grabbed my attention to the end. Even got a little scary in some parts. I liked the Author Notes too (I always read those) and I look forward to the sequel. I want to thank NetGalley, the author Jimmy Askew and Covenant Books for sending me this eARC in exchange for my honest review.

Author Askew has written a novel with a creative plot and lots of action. As the story progresses, each scene is filled with descriptions that help the reader to fully imagine the look and feel of the plot twists and turns. There are many elements of the story, including the history of the Inuit people, a private detective chasing down a missing husband, sex trafficking and, to some degree, werewolves. Entertaining read.

My thanks to the author, J.L. Askew, the publisher, Covenant Books, and LibraryThing, through whom I received my copy of this book.

A chilling and fascinating supernatural thriller. I loved how multifaceted this story was, with Russian crime families and supernatural theories and indigenous lore.
Askew paints chilling scenes without laboring over the details. The pacing sets a perfect tone for each event and I found myself wishing I could read faster and slower at the same time to get to the conclusion but savor such a well-crafted story. It was thrilling to realize this is just number one in the story. I'm looking forward to reading more!

I found the premise of this novel intriguing-a private investigator up in Alaska working a case and stumbling into a crazy supernatural situation. I even enjoyed the introduction and buildup in the beginning. Then, the book went horribly awry.

The plot is very complex with a million different characters, the connection of whom is very tenuous at best, but all who seemed willing to just let someone hop onto their research mission, or burn an airport down because someone claims to be in trouble. The main character completely made no sense-a psychologist turned PI who is suddenly a maverick performing military maneuvers?

There are a million subplots, which don’t add anything to the main story. Also, there were two completely different stories running through the whole book that had nothing to do with each other outside of location. Who’s the bad guy-the wolf or the Russians. Its both, but for unrelated reasons. Don’t try and find a connection-just two separate stories.

The worst part for me was the continued misogyny (from the author or main character-it was not clear). Lines like “…was seeing things differently. He forced a smile. She was just being a woman.” and “The note was inadequate. Women are sensitive…” made me double back to see if I had read correctly. Also, the main character falls in love with the two helpless female figures in the book that he doesn’t even know. That’s not a spoiler because that is just one more waste of a subplot line.

Overall, this book had so
much potential-but truly failed to capitalize on any of the positives it had going for it.

Alaska deadly begins when a girl decides to meet someone she met online and sense it’s something strange she tries to run but still gets kidnapped.
Warren a private detective had his first real case as investigator where a ladies husband had disappeared to in Alaska.
On his quest Warren finds a man willing to help him kick start the investigation but man Larsen gets kidnapped mysteriously by a wild animal as said by the detective. There’s suspicions of ware-wolves, human sacrifice and some suspicious activities in the town about people practicing cult. In the process of investigation Warren’s life is endangered as someone tries to kill him.
Alaska deadly is based on suspense and thrill. From a girl trying to save herself from being kidnapped and this creates a sense of panic as it captures one’s attention trying to understand what happened. The writter captures the character’s personality and characters which creates a sense of connection with the characters.
I love how the book slowly unfolds and the suspense which build from one chapter to another.
It creates a senses of curiosity which keeps the reader more invested. I would definitely recommend this book.

J. L. Askew’s “Alaska Deadly” is a compelling thriller that follows an inexperienced investigator’s experiences through his first job, which turns out to be more complex than he anticipated.

As the tale begins, we meet Warren, a private detective who is looking for a Tennessee woman’s estranged husband, Ron Billings. He had gone to Alaska after a series of marital issues with his wife. At the onset of his assignment, we follow him into a bar, where, after ordering a meal, he overhears a hair-raising conversation regarding the village where he is set to visit the next morning. A stranger by the name of Larsen is willing to disclose more to him about the village’s recent chilling events, but before the two can meet again, he is found dead from what the police presume to be an animal attack.

Warren is quick to realize that he is in the middle of something bigger than finding Billings. During his normal routine as an investigator, he is shot at by a seemingly professional shooter. He highly suspects that whoever is responsible for shooting at him doesn’t want Billings found. Soon enough, he learns that his client had partly lied about her marital issues with her estranged husband. Warren is now caught up in a life-threatening battle with a Russian crime syndicate that is deep into human trafficking. Additionally, a frightening revelation about a local community rumored to shapeshift into vicious werewolves threatens to put a quick halt to his quest.

This novel thrills with its gripping mystery, jaw-dropping action, and adrenalizing mythology. The author takes readers to the protagonist’s new world, where solving puzzles puts his talents to the ultimate test. As a reader, I found myself amused by the events following a promising relationship between the main character and a witness. The touch of love and romance is, minimal, but is beautifully covered by the constant twists and action blended together at a deliberate and engaging pace.

“Alaska Deadly” by J.L. Askew is a masterpiece that exemplifies unforgettable, inspiring lessons such as the parent-child bond and the complexity of human nature when caught up in mythical beliefs. Its breathtaking settings make for a terrific escapist experience. It is without a doubt a must-read for all crime mini-sleuths out there!

I loved this book! I went into it expecting kind of a typical action/thriller book but it was so much more!

Based on the synopsis I expected a few twists and surprises but this blew my expectations out of the water! It has everything from organized crime to cults to the paranormal. And the action is basically nonstop once it gets started.

A few times I struggled to follow what was going on because so much was going on! But after rereading the section I was able to get back on track. I also enjoyed most of the characters. Dr Dunbar kind of got on my nerves a few times but I don't expect to love every character in every book.

All in all its a fast paced, action packed book with more twists than I can count. If you're a fan of thriller stories I highly recommend!

I received this free from librarything and found this book very exciting. Race was sent to Alaska to find Ron Billings and his daughter who was abducted by the Russians. There was shapeshifting involved also so he was also looking fo0r a little boy who was sacrificed during a ceremony.

Murder, mystery, and supernatural folklore collide in J.L. Askew’s debut crime thriller, Alaska Deadly. With its vivid storytelling and rich imagery, the novel creates an unsettling atmosphere that lingers long after you’ve turned the last page. Fast-paced and suspenseful, it keeps readers on the edge of their seats, offering twists and turns that never let up. The detailed action scenes pull you into the heart of the story, evoking both tension and a relentless desire for answers.

At the heart of Alaska Deadly is private investigator Race Warren, hired to track down Ron Billings, a former police officer who has vanished without a trace. What begins as a routine missing-persons case quickly escalates into a dangerous pursuit entangled with human trafficking, ancient tribal legends, and a ruthless Russian crime syndicate. After surviving an assassination attempt, Warren realizes the case is far more complex than he anticipated; Billings isn’t just missing, he’s on a desperate mission to rescue his daughter from the clutches of Andrey Volkov’s brutal trafficking ring. Meanwhile, a team of scientists in a remote Alaskan village investigates chilling tribal myths, cult activity, and a string of unexplained deaths. As these storylines converge, Warren finds himself in a perilous battle for survival, where the line between reality and legend begins to blur.

Askew’s masterful use of descriptive prose brings the Alaskan wilderness to life, immersing readers in its harsh and unforgiving landscape. His skillful exposition and careful pacing heighten the suspense, making each action sequence feel intense and rewarding. Character development is another standout element; Race Warren is a compelling protagonist, flawed enough to feel real yet driven enough to keep the story moving. The supporting cast is equally well-crafted, with intricate connections that add depth to the novel’s unfolding mystery.

One of the book’s most intriguing aspects is the way it blurs the lines between reality and myth, weaving supernatural folklore into its crime-driven narrative. While this interplay adds an eerie and unique dimension to the story, I found myself wishing the mythology played a larger role. The crime elements are gripping, but a stronger emphasis on the supernatural aspects could have made the novel even more immersive. Additionally, some of the dialogue felt overly formal and unnatural, occasionally disrupting the otherwise engaging narrative.

Despite a few minor shortcomings, Alaska Deadly offers a thrilling ride, combining a gripping plot with a richly detailed setting and an intriguing blend of crime and mythology. While the supernatural elements could have been explored more deeply, the crime-driven storyline is compelling enough to keep readers hooked. Thriller enthusiasts, mystery lovers, and fans of subtle supernatural undertones will find this book hard to put down. Ultimately, Alaska Deadly is a captivating debut that promises great things for Askew’s future works.

Alaska Deadly by J.L. Askew offers a rich, immersive journey into the Alaskan wilderness. The descriptions make the reader feel that they are right there, walking among the icy landscapes and rugged terrain. The author’s ability to transport the reader to Alaska is one of the book’s greatest assets. I often pictured the stark beauty, from the dense forests to the isolated villages. It’s a setting that not only adds to the atmosphere but also becomes a character in its own right. This vital environmental element also enhances the tension and mystery of the plot.

J.L. Askew’s talent for detail and dialogue also stands out. The clarity of the conversations, especially between Race Warren and the characters he encounters, brings the story to life. Each line feels deliberate. The dialogue shows layers of the characters while moving the plot forward. It’s in these moments that the novel feels most grounded, despite its many twists and supernatural elements.

However, while I appreciated many of the characters, there are too many of them. The number of characters offsets the depth that could have been allotted to each. Many of the characters felt flat. They lacked the emotional complexity that would have made their motivations resonate more. With fewer characters, there could have been more room to explore their backstories. This would have helped the reader care more about their fates.

Another aspect of the novel that I found difficult was the elaborate plot. While it is packed with action, it sometimes feels overwhelming. There were times when it seemed like the story was trying to juggle too many subplots: human trafficking, cults, shapeshifters, and Russian mobsters. All this left this reader struggling to remember who was doing what and why. This busy plot also made it difficult to stay emotionally invested in the story. I believe it would help if more time were spent fleshing out one or two of the sub-plots. This would allow for a more cohesive narrative.

As other readers have noted, Alaska Deadly is a thriller with great potential. However, it falls short in execution due to its surplus of characters and storylines. Yet, the vivid descriptions and moments of tension make it a worthwhile read, particularly for those who enjoy distinctive settings. If you’re looking for a story that takes you deep into Alaska’s wild beauty while keeping you guessing, this novel delivers. I wish it had given its characters and storylines a little more space to breathe.

Private investigator Race Warren embarks on a captivating journey in the company of Claire Billings, who enlists his expertise to locate her missing husband, Ron, in the wilds of Alaska. Against the backdrop of this intriguing investigation, Race encounters an unsettling account of a woman's tragic demise at the hands of a mysterious creature. Ingeniously, he begins piecing together the puzzle, drawing connections to Ron's last known whereabouts. Amid his quest for the truth, Race forges an unlikely bond with Medford, a witness to the unfolding enigma. However, the plot thickens as Medford inexplicably vanishes, casting suspicion into the shadows.

Alaska Deadly by J.L. Askew paints a rich tableau of suspense and intrigue, weaving a tapestry of crime and thrills at a deliberate and immersive pace. The narrative comes alive through vivid detail and engaging dialogue, seamlessly interweaving threads of Inuit culture, ancient Alaskan heritage, and anthropological nuances. The story gracefully blurs the lines between reality and fantasy as Race Warren meticulously uncovers the threads of suspicion that tie these bewildering incidents together.

Anchorage, portrayed as a seemingly ordinary yet practical town, becomes a backdrop for uncovering a web of secrets that stretch back to ancient beliefs, enigmatic rituals, and mythical elements. At its heart, the story resonates with the potent force of a father's love and unyielding determination. The tension escalates with the introduction of criminal enterprises, most notably a human trafficking ring, layering the narrative with an added dimension of suspense. Race Warren emerges as a resolute investigator, seamlessly adapting to various challenges, while his partnership with the scientific team highlights his versatility and resourcefulness. Claire Billings, driven by an unwavering parental devotion, is a testament to the power of love and commitment. The contrast between Race and Billings regarding their motivations adds a compelling dynamic, enriching the narrative with depth and complexity.

In Alaska Deadly, J.L. Askew masterfully crafts a tale that not only entertains with its enigmatic twists but also delves into the intricacies of human nature, ancient beliefs, and the enigmatic allure of myth. The story's ability to seamlessly meld suspense with cultural exploration is a testament to the author's skillful storytelling.

Feral horizons: A cocktail of iced blood in the Last Frontier

J. L. Askew's novel ALASKA DEADLY: A Novel follows Race Warren, a fledgling investigator from Tennessee, whose straightforward missing-persons case quickly evolves into a labyrinthine journey involving werewolf legends, Russian traffickers, and Alaskan wilderness. Warren is thrust into a remote village on Alaska’s North Slope, where he not only searches for ex-policeman Ron Billings but is also drawn into an anthropological investigation of a reclusive tribal cult, animal worship included. As he meets researchers studying Inuit folklore, Warren encounters puzzles that straddle the line between natural and supernatural, particularly surrounding the unexplained death of a native girl. Askew deftly blends these elements to present a setting imbued with both danger and the haunting beauty of the Alaskan wilds, lending atmospheric weight to the narrative.

Throughout the novel, Askew merges themes of survival and humanity’s primal instincts, drawing inspiration from classic duality tropes. Billings and Warren eventually join forces as they navigate Alaska’s criminal underworld in pursuit of Billings’ missing daughter, Carrie, believed to be a victim of Russian traffickers. Their joint search, shadowed by Russian gunmen and violent encounters, reveals the extent of Billings’ drive, albeit with mixed success. While the men’s relationship brings dynamic dialogue and moments of suspense to the plot, it occasionally falters under a multitude of subplots, including tribal rituals, academic conferences, and run-ins with mobsters. Despite these narrative diversions, Askew’s portrayal of Alaska’s rugged landscape and indigenous cultures stands out as an intricate and immersive setting, heightening the chase's intensity.

Alaska Deadly captivates through a fantastic depiction of its vivid natural environment, action-laden sequences, and actualized exploration of myths, signalling Askew’s potential to keep delivering high-quality thrillers in future works.

Alaska Deadly finds private detective Race Warren working his first case, and the Memphis PI is under the impression it’s going to be like a paid vacation. All he has to do is travel to Alaska, find his client’s estranged husband, Ron Billings, and deliver a message. Easy, right?

Except Warren has little to go on except the fish processing plant where Billings last worked. And then there’s the mysterious person trying to kill him. Soon after arriving in Alaska, he’s ambushed by a shooter at a post office, owing his survival to the instincts of a guide dog who happened to be there.

Someone doesn’t want Billings to be found, and they’re willing to do whatever it takes to ensure Warren fails.

In Warren, author J.L. Askew has created a truly differentiated hero. Fictional detectives nearly always fall into one of two buckets: experienced former police or amateur sleuths. To Askew’s credit, Warren is neither. His four-year psychology degree set him up to learn how to deal with difficult people and situations the hard way – investigating child dependency cases and counseling families. Throughout the book, his unique approach helps open doors in personal interactions, and his naïveté when it comes to law enforcement is endearing. It’s clear from the first page that Warren is in over his head, which is precisely what makes Alaska Deadly so suspenseful.

As Warren explores Alaska’s infrastructure, culture and people, Askew’s atmospheric prose makes for terrific escapist reading. Instead of defaulting to cinematic writing in passages told from Warren’s point of view, Askew perfectly captures a beginner’s mind in this vast, wild world. Conversely, the prose transforms palpably in passages written from the POV of experienced outdoorsman Mark Dunbar (“there were remnants of winter, thin lines of unmelted snow laying starkly on the barren land, white tendrils on the brows of irregularities, creasing the tundra”). And what is already an engrossing crime thriller takes on new dimensions as Askew introduces local folklore: indigenous rituals, legends about shapeshifters, and more. In all, Askew makes Alaska come alive in the way Dennis Lehane does Boston, and wraps it in a compelling detective story that mystery fans will love.

ALASKA DEADLY by J. L. Askew is a roller-coaster of a thriller that takes you on a heart-pounding journey through the untamed Alaskan wilderness. Race Warren, our protagonist, is a refreshing departure from the typical hard-boiled detectives. With a background in psychology and social work, he navigates the treacherous terrain with a unique perspective. His interactions with the locals, the scientists, and the enigmatic Ron Billings bring depth to his character, making him more relatable than your standard gumshoe.

The author vividly describes the Alaskan scenery, making it feel like a real character in the story. The mountains, forests, and villages come to life, making the story feel genuine. Also, the inclusion of Alaskan myths and ancient beliefs adds an intriguing mystery. The book features a cult that practices animal shapeshifting.

It's not often seen in crime thrillers, but Askew handles it in a way that feels real and keeps you on the edge of your seat. He also connects the shapeshifting cult to the other story lines in the book, such as the missing person case and the sex trafficking ring.

The action sequences are electric, the twists are surprising, and the climax is a white-knuckle ride. The good thing about the book is that it is a fast-paced plot with plenty of suspense, vivid descriptions of Alaska, which bring the setting to life, complex and well-developed characters, a unique and interesting premise involving shapeshifting, cults, and sex trafficking, and a strong female lead character.

However, the book isn't without its minor hiccups. At times, the pacing slows down, especially amid lengthy academic discussions. Additionally, the number of plot threads can be overwhelming, and some readers may find them unresolved. Also, the plot can meander at times, some exposition can be heavy-handed, and some characters can be underdeveloped.

If you're looking for a thriller that offers a fresh perspective, this one is well worth the journey. Get ready to embark on a wild ride through the heart of Alaska's mysteries!

“Alaska Deadly” by J. L. Askew is a fast moving who / what done it with plenty more side adventures that all end up being intertwined. The story opens in the foreword in Anchorage, Alaska where a young woman named Myra shows up at a coffee shop to meet a young man she met online, and is kidnapped. Race Warren is a private investigator from Tennessee and our protagonist. He arrives in Anchorage to find a missing person (not Myra). He has a lead that his quarry might be in a small village in an area known as the North Slope. While dining in a restaurant, Race overhears an oil worker named Larsen, talking about the grisly murder of his girlfriend in the same village Race is going to tomorrow. He tries to interview Larsen to learn about the murder, but the oil worker is too drunk. So Race gets Larsen a motel room for the night, so they can have a conversation in the morning. Come morning, Larsen is gone from the room and Race goes looking for him, only to discover that Larsen has been murdered in the same grisly manor as his girlfriend. So now our plot is dealing with a kidnapping, a missing person, and two similar murders many miles apart.

Race travels to the small village to find out that his quarry, Ron Billings is staying in the same bed and breakfast. Billings is there to find his missing daughter Carrie, who he fears has been human trafficked as a sex worker by Russian mobsters. Race joins up with Billings to help locate and free his daughter, another plot twist that I just love. Also at the bed and breakfast are a team of college academics studying the culture of the Native Alaskans, who to a degree become involved with Race and Billings, as well as make the story more interesting.

I can’t say anymore about the plot, fearing spoilers, however I can say that this book is well worth your time. One thing leads to the next over and over, carrying the story forward and binding it all together. The About The Author section reveals that this is J.L. Askew’s first novel, to which I say, Bravo! I can’t wait for the next one.

J.L. Askew's "Alaska Deadly" is a riveting mystery story set in Alaska's untamed and hazardous wilderness. The plot follows Race Warren, a Tennessee detective who becomes involved in a complicated and unexpected missing person case in the rough Alaskan landscape. Askew creates a tale that keeps readers interested from beginning to end, combining tension, intrigue, and a touch of the uncanny.

Askew's writing style is extremely fascinating, drawing readers into the dramatic and beautifully descriptive Alaskan location. The vivid representations of mountains, woods, and villages make the scenery seem like a living, breathing character in the drama. The narrative expertly incorporates parts of Alaskan mythology and old traditions, providing another dimension of mystery and complexity. The introduction of a shapeshifting cult and a sex trafficking network adds to the story's intricacy, creating a fascinating blend of the fantastical and frighteningly realistic.

Race Warren stands out as an engaging protagonist with a distinct background in psychology and social work, breaking away from the traditional hard-boiled detective model. His encounters with locals, scientists, and intriguing figures such as Ron Billings provide dimension to his character and make him sympathetic. The character development, along with Warren's emotional journey and the novel's rich scene setting, keeps readers hooked in the unraveling mystery.

Despite its postiives, "Alaska Deadly" still has some small flaws. The pacing occasionally slows during lengthy academic discussions, and the number of narrative strands may be overwhelming sometimes. Some readers may find key themes unanswered, and there are times when the explanation feels heavy-handed. However, these concerns pale in contrast to the novel's overall impact for me.

"Alaska Deadly" is a gripping and exciting book that provides a new spin on the criminal thriller genre, making it a must-read for aficionados of suspense and adventure.

This novel was a surprise for me! As I was looking for a new book to read, this one came up as something I may like. This book is all about a private investigator named Race Warren. He must venture to Alaska in order to find one of his client's husbands, Ron Billings. While he is in Alaska, Warren discovers that someone is protecting Billings and he is going to have to work hard to find him since someone doesn't want him found.

While he is in Alaska, Race meets Dr. Dunbar. He is actually studying some of the ancient beliefs in the area and these beliefs are what he thinks led to a murder. A native woman was killed and it could have been because of these beliefs. This is when Dunbar and Race become fast friends and Race believes that his case could have something to do with Billings.

This book follows a lot of twists and turns, including some cults, shapeshifting, and rumors that this woman may have been killed by a supernatural wolf creature! Of course, I was NOT expecting this in the twists and turns of this book. But wait! There's so much more!!

Not only does the supernatural come out, but there are also sex traffickers and tribal shamans who may have the answers. What will Race do with all of this information? I wish I could tell you, but wouldn't that ruin your reading of the book?

I can tell you this… there are some battles between Volkov henchmen, sex trades, and even a sacrifice. Dunbar and Warren become closer friends when they have to work through all of this together to find the answers that they have been looking for all along.

Although I don’t know if I have EVER read a book this complex, but with all of the twists and turns, it was well worth it! There are plenty of werewolves, Russian gangsters, and some vampire lore all tossed into one novel. How can you resist?

I would tell anyone to read this book if they are in need of a change of pace. It moves very quickly and I was very happily surprised at the end. Five big stars!

Alaska Deadly, by J.L. Askew, is a crime thriller with supernatural elements. The book follows Race Warren, a psychologist and private investigator who is looking to establish himself in his field. But his simple missing person case quickly becomes more than it originally seemed. Warren must explore Alaska’s mountains, forest, and settlements as he confronts Russian crime and unnatural beasts.

Alaska Deadly truly separates itself from other thrillers with its setting. The Alaskan wilderness and local life color the novel. It feels realistic and whimsical. The reader navigates from the dive bar that Warren visits to a compound in the mountains that Billings scouts. Each location feels real and natural due to J.K. Askew’s clever descriptions.

Also, the book has extremely strong action sequences. The mystery scenes – which tend to be slower paced – receive jolts of energy from the faster-paced gun fights. These moments of conflict breathe life into the story and create a stronger reader engagement.

The book features a wide cast of perspective characters from Professor Dunbar to Detective Roberts. While the perspectives do provide plenty of avenues to explore the central mystery -- they can sometimes become confusing to the reader. The reader wants to follow Warren’s story, and being separated from him is, at times, difficult. It feels as if the reader is constantly trying to find their footing within the novel's many perspectives. However, that does become less of a hinderance later in the novel.

If you are a fan of Come With Me by Ronald Malfi, this book is definitely for you. There is a great mystery in a remarkably interesting setting. If the book’s description seems fascinating to you, I would suggest picking it up. For his first fiction book, J.K. Askew did something that was extremely ambitious -- and he pulled it off.

I just finished "Alaska Deadly," and it was a thrilling ride from start to finish. The story follows Race Warren, a new private investigator from Tennessee, who takes on a case in Alaska that quickly turns from routine to life-threatening.

The plot is packed with twists and surprises. Early on, Race is almost killed by a mysterious assassin in Anchorage, which immediately hooked me. From there, he tracks down Ron Billings, a former cop, to a remote village. There, Race meets scientists studying a tribal cult involved in animal worship. They suspect something supernatural might be at play, which adds an intriguing and eerie element to the story.

Race’s first meeting with Billings is tense and full of suspicion, but they quickly realise they need each other. Billings is searching for his daughter, Carrie, who was taken by Russian traffickers. Their partnership evolves naturally, and I found myself invested in both of their stories.

The action in this book is intense. Race and Billings dive into the criminal underworld and manage to rescue a young girl with information about Carrie. They then have to escape from Russian gunmen, leading to some heart-pounding chase scenes. The pacing is great, and the stakes feel incredibly high throughout.

One thing I appreciated was how the book tackles serious issues like human trafficking. It gives the story more depth and makes you think about the real-world implications. The young girl they rescue adds a lot of emotional weight to their mission.

There were a few places that needed improvement. Occasionally, I felt that some of the supporting characters lacked depth, therefore I would have liked to see more development in them.

All in all, this gripping, exciting story will have you engrossed till the very end, so you can't miss this out.

In Alaska Deadly, J.L. Askew delivers an intricate crime thriller that immerses readers in the harsh, haunting wilderness of Alaska. This gripping mystery centers on Race Warren, a private investigator drawn from Tennessee to Alaska for what seems like a standard missing person case. Yet as he delves deeper, Warren finds himself pulled into a web of supernatural lore, human trafficking, and Russian crime syndicates, with each twist escalating the stakes.Askew’s storytelling shines with detailed, atmospheric descriptions that transform Alaska from a mere backdrop into a powerful, almost menacing presence in the story. The isolated environments, which range from rocky mountaintops to frozen forests, are more than just backdrops; they are adversaries that heighten Warren's trip and turn it into a conflict between nature and humanity. Vibrant descriptions of the Alaskan wilderness give readers a sense of the harshness, loneliness, and unrelenting difficulties Warren encounters. This heightens the suspense and supports the book's gloomy tone.Askew also weaves in supernatural elements with the introduction of a local cult, rumored to practice shapeshifting and ritual sacrifice. These elements lend the book a mystical, eerie quality, expanding it from a straightforward crime story into a genre-blending thriller that incorporates mystery and the supernatural.Alaska Deadly is ultimately a compelling debut. With its captivating setting, strong character development, and pulse-pounding scenes, Askew’s work is well-suited for fans of atmospheric crime thrillers looking for a unique setting and intricate plot twists.

A gripping and action-laden thriller that takes readers on a thrilling journey through the remote and chilling landscapes of Alaska. Private investigator Race Warren's quest to find a client's estranged husband unravels into a deadly game of survival when he encounters an assassin determined to keep the husband hidden.

The narrative takes a compelling twist as Warren delves into a different mystery, connecting with Dr. Mark Dunbar and his team studying ancient beliefs in an arctic village. The discovery of a cult linked to animal shapeshifting and a mythic wolf launches the book on a tangential plot.

As Warren and Billings, an ex-policeman searching for his daughter, venture deeper into the treacherous world of human trafficking, the stakes escalate. The story slowly unfolds, then picks up pace when the protagonist encounters ruthless villains in a race against time to rescue the captive daughter.

Simultaneously, the scientists' investigation reveals a tribal shaman's dark ritual, adding to the suspense as they seek Warren's help. The converging paths of the characters, rather than the plot, culminate in a thrilling climax, where Warren faces a malevolent force bent on destruction.

"Alaska Deadly" is a well-written tale of suspense, action, and mystery that keeps readers guessing. The author's attention to detail will be appreciated by those who appreciate an atmospheric effect in a novel, but it comes at a cost with an impact on the book's pace.

Recommend this read.

What do you get when you mix human trafficking, the arctic wilderness, werewolves, and the Russian mob? Somewhat of a messy thriller, but not one that can be accused of being boring. If readers find this one hard to categorize, they will also find it hard to put down.

The plot concerns a private investigator traveling to Alaska on what seems to be a standard-issue case of a husband skipping town. Shortly after he arrives, he stumbles upon a string of brutal murders that bear some of the hallmarks of a wild animal attack. He then crosses paths with a team of researchers who are studying the shamanistic beliefs of a small Alaskan Native tribe, in particular as they relate to the wolf. Meanwhile, he closes in on the man he has been pursuing, who turns out to be on a hunt of his own--one that might lead into the center of a powerful criminal organization.

This all gets a bit busy, with multiple plotlines, POV characters, and an almost comically excruciating attention to physical detail. Every room and building was described practically down to the patterns in the carpet, and each time one character had to recount their experiences to another, there was a frame-by-frame description of events--even those that the reader already knew about. There was even a romance sub-plot so tepid that it seemed like a distraction more than anything else. For all its faults, Alaska Deadly was fun, fast-paced (if one is willing to skim over some of the more needless descriptions) and, most importantly, unashamedly its own thing. I encourage readers to give this one a chance.

Alaska Deadly by J. L . Askew is a fun, intriguing, and gripping novel to read that begins with the murder of a person who was actually supposed to be an informant. Dr Race Warren, a private investigator, is thrust into a mystery where the disappearance he was paid to investigate takes a darker turn.
The book also follows another character, Ron Billings, who is in search of his missing daughter and will stop at nothing to find her. The two characters come head-on, until they finally join hands to stop the larger evil at play – a mafia of sorts that traffics and sells young women and girls for sexual exploitation.
The book is pacy with fun action sequences that make you feel like you’re watching a movie play out right in front of your eyes. It is full of folklore and myths about shapeshifting and werewolves which are introduced right at the beginning that make it interesting and leaves the reader questioning what is going on. Think Taken meets The Vampire Diaries.
There was only one thing in the book that gave me pause. At one point, I felt that the two narratives – the werewolf one and the kidnapping one – diverged too far apart from each other, leaving me confused as to how they were connected. But apart from that, I had a fun time reading it. I also happened to read that Askew is working on the second book, and I can’t wait to see what adventures await our characters.

J. L. Askew's "Alaska Deadly: A Novel" features Private Investigator Race Warren's nervy events in Alaska, where gloaming activities and chilling disclosures regarding stringent ritualistic rites, werewolf occurrences, and heart-wrecking exercises by proscribed cliques await him.

Warren has been tasked to track down Ron Billings, a one-time army official who to Warren's awe is found undertaking a surreptitious operation of seeking his missing daughter's whereabouts. Warren melds his skill with Billings', and they jointly roll out to tumble down the cruel and barbarous Russian mobsters, whose lucrative abduction enterprise kept on unleashing pure dread to its target populace. As the read advances, readers will come to relish a rumored aberration regarding some local's vampiric powers, as Askew's masterstroke through which the fable swivels.

Other than being a deeply thrilling best-seller, "Alaska Deadly: A Novel" is a tale that conveys situational awareness necessary for one's safety and obligation. As readers will come to ascertain, the protagonist's tactical and strategic impertinent thinking is stupendous and highly persuasive to one's ideation and ingenuity. In conclusion, the book races towards a satisfactory finish through which mature adult mystery lovers may find themselves expressing deep esteem for Author Askew's exertions and lambency. Highly recommended!

There was a lot I liked about the book: There are some interesting characters; there are loads of twists and turns. However, there are two very distinctly different and unrelated storylines that just don’t gel. We know the story is meant to be about a PI who is hired to find a missing man. The author had enough to go on with that storyline to write a book - and it would have been good. The attention to detail and descriptions are worthy of that being a story on its own. The other story was the wolf story that again could have been a book on its own and equally as good because there was a lot of information there. Instead, I found there was too much jumping around, loose ends and sometimes I’d simply ask “why?” Why would Race go off for the day if he thought he’d found what he was looking for instead of checking? Why wouldn’t Race say what he’d been witness to when it could help the group he was with, especially when he’d been cleared by Roberts - and why didn’t Roberts say anything either? What happened to the taxi driver that cleared off?
From about a third of the way in I found several typo/grammatical errors dotted through the book. Only about a dozen in total so not major but worth noting. I also really liked Race - right up until the author made him a complete misogynist. There was absolutely no need for the comments about women. They didn’t add to the story. In fact, it put me off my flow of reading because I couldn’t believe the comments were there. Firstly belittling women for having feelings then being surprised they could be intelligent and academic?! Really? From the man that fell for the first woman he spoke to for more than a minute, and then again with the next woman.
I do hope the author writes more but with one story at a time so loose ends can be tied up.

In J.L. Askew’s novel, Alaska Deadly, Private Investigator Race Warren is asked to find a missing person. It is in this pursuit, that he comes face to face with an assassin, is introduced to a nativistic cult, and encounters a series of unsolved murders. While trying to find answers and survive while doing it, he makes an unlikely alliance. Will Race solve these mysteries before it’s too late, and someone else is killed?

Alaska Deadly is a suspenseful story full of intriguing twists and turns. It has the potential to be a page-turner. However, there are several structural problems with the plot. First, the love interest angle is severely under-developed and flat. The characters lack layers, and the reader is not captivated by their relationship. Secondly, it is hard to keep track of all the subplots, and they need to be tied together more effectively. As a result, storylines are hard to follow. Fourth, there are several “information dumps” that are unnecessarily repeated and slow the story’s progress. Finally, the author has confused point of view multiple times throughout the novel. This “head hopping” occurs as often as three times in one scene and is a major distraction to the reader.

Alaska Deadly is a story full of potential. However, the structural deficiencies don’t allow it to shine as much as it should.

Professor Dunbar, a wildlife biologist and Professor Hartley, a cultural anthropologist are ready to give a lecture about Ankauits in present-day society. This is solely based on numerous research efforts that culminate in an expedition to the North Slope after a woman from this tribe is killed in a mysterious way. Their expedition is worthwhile as they glean a lot about this community. Both professors’ passion for their work stems from their childhood encounters. In the lecture, it is noted that the Ankauits had primitive ways of life that involved the worship of the stars, sun and moon. Their religion comprised of animism to a small extent as well as shamanism. One thing that stood out for me in this lecture is the term “shapeshifting”. This is a belief that it is possible for an individual to change into an animal and in this case, a wolf. Alaska Deadly authored by J.L Askew is a book that is well written. I feel that the writer is meticulous which is evident in the way that he merges the thoughts together. The flow of the story is epic which makes the read a complete page-turner. I also love that the writer incorporates suspense and thriller ensuring the reader stays glued. This is a fairly long read that is extremely exhilarating!

Alaska Deadly by J. L. Askew
What an awesome read. There is something for everyone in this book: so many mysteries, shapeshifters, abductions, child trafficking, cult, and missing people all in the middle of Alaska.
Loved learning more about Alaska, the terrain, climate, scenery that is out of this world and the team effort of helping others who live there. So many twists and turns.
The PI is sent to Alaska to find a missing child. He has some clues but gets help from others in town who might know of the tribe and it's events that take place at midnight...
The father of the child shows up and so do scientists who are there for their own reasons. One is studying wolves and I love learning about that aspect of this book.
Love how they are able to help a plane land, collect the passengers get on board and take off again while being shot at. What strategy, so crazy it works!
Love hearing about the fire pit and how it has a secret there.
There is so much to this story, easy to keep everybody straight and learning about the people that live there. Grand finale, well one of them is the house with moveable walls.
Can't wait to read from this author. Super descritpvive I felt I was there and could feel what they were feeling, the smells, sounds and the sights.

Private investigator Race Warren is hired by Claire Billings to search for her missing ex-husband, Ron. Unfortunately, Warren doesn't have much information to go off of, just that Ron went to Alaska for work and did not return. So Warren flies out to Alaska, briefly stopping in Anchorage before heading deeper into the Alaskan interior, towards a small town named Ataqsut. But when Warren comes face to face with an assassin upon arriving in Alaska, he realizes this is much more than a missing person's case. Warren eventually finds Billings, who reveals that his time in Alaska has been spent searching for his missing daughter, Carrie. Carrie is caught up in a sex trafficking ring run by the Russian mafia and so Warren teams up with Billings to rescue her. This is very much a typical crime/suspense novel balanced out with fast-paced action scenes that help drive the plot forward. The novel has supernatural elements with an interesting subplot involving a group of scientists that Warren meets while in Ataqsut, who uncover a secret cult involved with animal shapeshifting. I would recommend this for crime novel fans who are looking for a read with a unique twist.
