Il quoziente umano

Roma, anni Sessanta. Il piccolo Alberto Luca cresce solitario in una casa-prigione, con una madre anaffettiva e un padre assente. Ma non è davvero solo. Di giorno in giorno, di anno in anno, avverte la sensazione di condividere il suo corpo con "un altro". Una condizione che lo incuriosisce, poi lo confonde e lo inquieta. Fino a una notte fatale della tarda adolescenza, quando la lacerazione interiore esplode in modo violento e Alberto e Luca si separano, fisicamente. Luca scappa di casa, alla ricerca di un amore perduto, Alberto rimane, destinato a un futuro borghese e tradizionale. La rotta divergente e controversa delle due vite li porterà negli angoli più lontani della loro esistenza, sempre inseguiti da un'ombra, una presenza o una mancanza indefinibile e minacciosa. Il mare, complice delle rispettive inquietudini, sarà l'unico elemento di contatto dei loro destini.

Ma le vicende dei due protagonisti sono anche legate a quelle di Louise, una bambina scampata a un naufragio nell'oceano, che cresce orfana su un'isola sperduta, dove ormai adulta presta servizio nella polizia. Quando un mattino entra nella stanza di un residence dove è stato trovato un cadavere, qualcosa la sconvolge. I suoi incubi, il passato misterioso, le mille bugie sulle quali ha costruito la sua vita hanno qualcosa a che fare con quell'uomo, che non sa riconoscere, che non è uno sconosciuto, che le fa paura.

A book that is difficult to define, balanced between the metaphysical, the psychological, the philosophical and the unreal, with the sea in the background, with its immensity, its power and its content of incredible and still unknown creatures.
A book that at times reminded me of Calvino's Cloven Viscount, with its dichotomy between the two parts of the same person. Here obviously the development of the plot is different, but the division of Alberto Luca into Alberto and Luca, two very different people, has the same root, which is the question that sooner or later we all ask ourselves, that is, what would it be like if we managed to live as many lives as all the different aspects of ourselves are? Not an easy question...
In addition to Alberto and Luca, who at the beginning are one, and then become two, there is a third protagonist, Louise, who enters at a certain point and whose role we will only discover towards the end of the book. End of the book that still leaves many things unresolved and suspended, leaving the reader with the possibility of concluding them with his imagination. The plot takes place in Rome, in the 1960s, where in the first pages we meet this child who feels two people inside him, I would say one right-handed and one left-handed, given that they played tennis in this way. This strange coexistence goes on until one night they can't take it anymore and Alberto and Luca separate, even physically: one will lead a messy and adventurous life, the other will lead a more normal and "bourgeois" life, with the sea on the background, the only thing they have in common. And then with Louise, the person who will eventually close the story.
It is a book written with a very beautiful and compelling style, and which makes it clear what love the author feels for the sea, described as a universe apart, unknown to most, and populated with such beautiful and powerful enough to become almost an illness for the protagonists. A sea that is made up of an "above" and an "under", a place of diving, arrivals and departures. A sea to be navigated far and wide, where setting sail will become the center of one of the protagonist's two personalities and will be the ploy to introduce Louise, a navigator too.
A book that is certainly not easy to read, which leaves many doors open, which pushes you to reflect, and which therefore is not a book to be read in some waiting room to pass the time, because the magic that the author is able to create would be lost a little.
