Rate this book
When life gives you lemons, you need hope. And a way to handle them. Because how you approach, process, and transform life's difficulties makes all the difference, especially for parents facing the sometimes sour experiences of raising special needs children with developmental, behavioral, and/or health needs.  Structured around the steps of a recipe for making lemonade, emotional stories from special needs parents, including the author, are woven together with practical strategies from a Christian world view. The result is a transformational, uplifting, virtual support group that will encourage you to face whatever lemons you face in the kitchen of life. MAKING LEMONADE is a must read for not only parents but for professionals who work with children with special needs. (Specific issues covered include autism, mosaic Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, tuberous sclerosis, Cornelia de Lange syndrome, cancers, and ADHD.)

I have to be honest. I won this e-book on a blog giveaway. But I don't enter too many blog giveaways these days, since my life is so busy raising my son with Aspergers Syndrome and any spare time I do have is spent reading my favorite fiction writers' work. I entered this one because something in me whispered that I needed this book. That something--or Someone--was right. This came along at just the time I needed the comfort, empathy, strength and support of parents who are raising special needs children. And in this book I found that community support in a composite of several families.

Some of the children featured were on the autism spectrum, some battled cancer, some had other developmental disabilities, and still there were other unique situations chronicled. Despite the differences there was the commonality of the stages of grief a parent experiences as they grapple with their expectations for the child and the realities. The author assembles the elements of the book, artistically showing how God's hand of grace and guidance stirs the pitcher of the ingredients--the sharp, biting and sometimes bitter, with the sweet, and the refreshing--together to create a surrendered life that is being poured back on our children as a drink offering.
At times I wept with these precious people, and at times I rejoiced in their milestones and achievements.

At all times I was thankful for the generosity of those who have gone before me on this journey, for their transparency and insight and willingness to encourage. I found it to be a message I needed at this time, a chance to reflect on my son's struggles and achievements and to realize that I am not alone.

Buy this book as an investment for yourself, and get an extra copy for your loved ones who need to understand what life is like transforming our children with special needs.

I was a teacher for children with special needs for 27 years and dealt with a lot of different types of situations and disabilities. When I read this book, I thought about all the parents and people who work with children with special needs that should read Making Lemonade. It gives support and good advice. I learned so much from children with special needs and they made my life much better being part of it. I will never look at a glass of lemonade the same again. Instead it will be filled with memories of children who touched my life. Making Lemonade is beautifully written.
