A full-color fantasy manga/graphic novel series about the fun daily life of a teenage sea sprite!
An all-new tale for kids and adults from the creative team behind My Little The Manga (also from Seven Seas).
Meet Coral, a sweet-natured girl who lives with her parents, kid sister Maki, and pet sea otter in the seaside town of Reef Beach. She's no different than any other teenager--except like all inhabitants of New Lemuria, she's not quite human. Coral is a sea sprite, and when not at school, or helping out in her mom's dress shop, or hanging out with friends, she's out catching waves on her beloved surfboard. But Coral's life is about to turn upside down once dreamy fire ifrit, Nick Inferno, comes to town. How can she not crush on this boy who is literally burning hot?!
A sweet tale of a teenager living her sea sprite life only to be unravelled away by a new boy in her life. Lately, he has been everywhere and Coral might have just the skill he needs assistance with.
The story had a smooth flow with distributed chapters that made the plot development effective. I was a bit iffy about the writing style, but the plethora of characters who were not quite human with their distinctive traits of inferno, sea sprite and other creatures - made this read worthwhile.
I do recommend this to people who would like to delve into a new manga world with avid creatures
The high school romantic drama is predictable and not too interesting, but the rest of the plot is intriguing enough that I'll keep going. The art is so cute, just what you'd expect from an artist that did My Little Pony in the past.
This is a book I would never usually pick but was so happy to have received this from a friend because I actually loved it. It’s a cute easy read about being in high school and dealing with high school things. So cute
The artwork in this is stunning. I love the fun, bright colors. The storyline feels pretty much standard teen dating drama...which isn't a bad thing...it just didn't really stand out. I wouldn't be against reading the next volume but I don't have any plans to seek it out either.
I absolutely fell in love with this full color comic about Coral, a teenage sea-sprite who lives in this cool fantasy town with all sorts of really interesting friends. This is a fun slice-of-life style story, and I especially love the love triangle moments between Coral, Nick, and ... um, I forgot his name, but he's basically Reggie from the Archie comics, lol. 110% recommend if you're into fantasy slice-of-life with fantastic art and fun storylines!
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are unbiased and my own.
This story was an unexpected gem, and I thought it was really cute! Our main character, Coral, is a sea sprite in a magical world in that closely resembles real life, but where all of the inhabitants are mythical creatures or beats. On top of sea sprites there are dryads, kappas, sirens, yetis, fire ifrits, and various animal-like creatures among the ranks. And that's only some of the types of creatures present. It's certainly an interesting and diverse world, and on it's surface the only really interesting aspect is the inhabitants- but as I read through I got more intruiged by the whole thing. It's cool to see this world where so many different creatures live together, and it would be cool to learn more about some of the different species as well as getting to see different areas of the greater world. Unfortunately the next volume isn't expected to be published for another year, so I guess I'll just have to be patient. But this story does seem to be more of a slice of life kind of series, so we may never see much beyond Reef Beach.
The story itself is simple- during summer break Coral meets Nick Inferno who she instantly gets a crush on. The story follows her navigating her feelings after he sees her on a date with her boss' son and as the school year starts, in which Nick has transfered to Coral's high school and wants to join the swim team despite being a fire type, which often don't do well in water. There's a lot of boy drama throughout the whole thing and girls giggling about their crushes, so if you're someone who doesn't really like those kind of things, you probably wouldn't like the story very much. The whole thing where Lillyana meets boys for the first time was a little much, but as the book progressed I kind of enjoyed it. At first it felt a bit superficial and annoying, but after a while I grew to like the charm. It's just supposed to be silly, and I can kind of get behind it. To be fair this is also clearly a young adult graphic novel, so of course it's going to be filled with stereotypical teenager stuff. And I did eat it up, so really it didn't matter in the end.
I did really like Coral as a protagonist a lot, even if on the surface she doesn't really stand out too much on her own. I think part of the reason I liked her so much was that there was such a well-balanced ensemble of supporting characters. All of them were really charming in their own way, and I don't think there was a character I truly disliked or found annoying. Coral's friends, family, and classmates provide not only a really good balance but they also added other story lines that made the overall story more enjoyable. I liked getting to see things from other character's points of view, and I feel like if the story ONLY focused on Coral's storyline it would have gotten a bit boring. Sure, there are quite a lot of side characters, and many of them don't do too much, but I still liked them- not only because it was cool to see the different creatures present in Reef Beach but also because I found them really funny. Maki was easily my favorite character just because I like the little mischevous sibling characters a lot.
I also really liked how funny a lot of the things in the book was. There were lots of really small lines and things that I liked. For one, there was Lillyana's certified autism moment (that dress is evil!) and my favorite part in the whole book:
"They have the same last name! You know what that means?" "Yes... THEY'RE ALREADY MARRIIIIIED!" "Uh, no..."
And the names! They were certainly very creative. Ruffaël? Splatrick?! SLIMEANTHA?! And then there's the themed names- like with the Inferno siblings. Blaze, Ember, and... Nick. Just Nick.
+++Spoilers in the rest of the review+++
The only thing I really don't understand was the whole thing with Coral and her sea sprite powers? I can't seem to figure out if it's something that all sea sirens have, which is unlikely considering that if it was then it would be common knowledge to everyone else, or if it's kind of just Coral's lineage? It might seem that way considering the ending of the story, but I'm still curious. In fact when it was first introduced at the beginning I didn't understand that it wasn't supposed to be a normal occurance until Maki's chapter. There was a bit of a disconnect between the two scenes, and I find it a bit crazy how none of the other kids seemed to believe Maki considering that magical powers isn't too out of the ordinary. Clearly people like Lillyana have abilities so why is it hard to believe Coral would too? I am interested in seeing how this will play into the rest of the story in future, but my real question is how did Coral's father, a sea sprite, get supposedly lost at sea? I'm sure that might be answered because he cleary left on purpose when the next book comes out in... 2026. Oh.
Overall the story was really cute, but if the next book doesn't come out for another year, which is a whopping three years after this one was originally released, I don't know if I'll even remember anything about this book to continue. But even if I don't continue with the series, this book was really fun in it's own way, even if it was a bit silly and a stereotypical "teen drama" story. But it does have that bit of a fantasy twist that I really loved. On it's own if it was just humans going through this stuff it would have been very basic and boring, but just adding that small extra layer not only made the whole thing for fun, oiriginal, and intruiging, but it opens so many more doors for the story- like Coral's powers and the return of her father.
Romance, beach, family and friends mix together to create an exciting splash with a sea sprite to root for.
Coral enjoys her life with her little sister and parents, living along the seaside in a town, where all sorts of creatures live. When she runs into an ifrit, who is determined to learn how to surf, she decides to teach him. Not only is he 'hot' in many forms, but she recognizes him as a team captain from another high school. Of course, she crushes on him but doesn't take it seriously until he and his possible girlfriend turn up the first day of school as new students. Add the playboy at the hotel and secret super-powers she doesn't even realize she possesses, and there is more than just a little drama in her future.
This is the first book of a new series, which centers around mythical creatures such as mermaids, sea sprites, and more. The town, Reef Beach, is just like any American, human town, and the high school isn't any different. So, the scenes, while holding waves of fantasy, stay in familiar settings with familiar issues. The illustrations bring these across well and make for an engaging and grabbing tale from beginning to end.
High school drama fans are going to enjoy this read. Coral is a sweet girl with tons of energy and a very good heart. She's on the naive side and doesn't always realize the true intentions of those around her. Luckily, her friends and family are kind and supportive, and create a very positive foundation for the drama she runs into at school. Coral needs to steer the intentions of two guys as well as the girls around her, while developing some unique friendships. The tale does fit well to the young adult audience and still stays light-hearted. The problems are, actually, even appropriate for older middle grade audience. To keep things exciting there are hints at her own hidden powers and secrets surrounding her real father, too.
There is some light action in these pages, but mostly, it centers around friendships and hidden agendas in high school hallways. It's a fun read with humor, heart, and warm moments, and promises to hold quite a bit more in books to come. I received a complimentary copy through Edelweiss and found this to be an easy, fun read, especially for high school drama fans.
I read this one because it was put in my library's children's graphic novel collection, and a patron said they thought it was a better fit for YA. Since professional reviews were pretty split, I had to read it for myself to decide. I could have made my decision after reading the first of the eight chapters (all their own separate episodic stories, loosely tied together to create a longer story arc), but the story was entertaining so I kept going.
Overall, this was a pleasant, lighthearted graphic novel. I see why reviews with age recommendations were split because it's a very middle school sort of read. It straddles the line, tame enough for older and slightly more mature middle graders while using a very kid-friendly art style (feels a lot like a cartoon that I might have watched and enjoyed in 6th grade or so), but the story is just mature enough that I feel like middle and maybe even high schoolers are the real target audience. So yes, I am moving the book to YA, but keeping it in mind for those specific younger readers who are looking to maybe "read up."
My biggest critique is that occasionally the dialogue was tricky to follow, or the scene would shift abruptly and it would take a beat to shift with the story. Not enough to kill this read entirely, but enough to dock this graphic novel a star, maybe a star and a half.
The story ends on a cliffhanger. I do need Volume 2 ASAP.

I loved the My Little Pony: The Manga - A Day in the Life of Equestria Vol. 1 so I was really excited to see these two team up again. Welcome to Reef Beach, home to many fantastical residents including ifrits, sea sprites, sirens, kappa, and more. Follow Coral as she makes new friends, deals with her mischievous sister and irritating coworker, and experiences her first major crush. Loved the community of magical beings.
The colors in this book are absolutely stunning. They really make the artwork pop. The character designs were so cool. It was really neat to see the different variations of mythological beings.
Storywise, it was okay. It's pretty straight forward in terms of crushes, friendship, and family drama. There are definitely some intriguing secrets that will hopefully be explored in the next volume.
Overall, a good read. The art alone makes it worth checking out.
I fell in love with art - it was vivid and super colourful.
This is a typical day in the life of a high schooler. Coral loves to ditch house chores so she can go surfing. Her little sister gets bribed to keep her mouth shut when something embarrassing happens to Coral. Coral gets in all sorts of teenage trouble by saying the wrong things but meaning others.
So . . . our sea sprite meats a fire ifrit while out surfing and she majors crush. They have this instant spark going, and I was rooting for them all the way - tan dan - cliffhanger with so much drama left and broken hearts, which I hope will mend :)
This volume will have you laughing, rolling your eyes and giggling like a teenager when no one is looking.
I say this in love, but this has a very Deviantart + early 2000’s cartoon vibe.
With the fast pace, the constant winking, the sister with a weird obsession with her brother so she sabotages other girls, and the slapstick (coral and lilyanna ending up naked; coral's little sister teasing her about boys; lilyanna's boy craziness).
Still, it’s a relatively cute slice of life with fantasy characters. The love triangle with Nick Inferno and Lance (he's a jerk but seems to have genuine feelings for her) was also entertaining.
SN: Lilyanna’s design is too cute! The Orca Whale dude looked hilarious
Dive into the world of New Lemuria which is populated by sprites, elves, sirens, dryads, fire ifrits, and other mystical beings. Coral is a sea sprite with a penchant for surfing and a certain hot boy named Nick Inferno, but she's not the only one with eyes on a certain boy and Nick isn't the only one with eyes for her. Featuring secret magical powers, adorable friendships, hilarious awkwardness, complex family dynamics, a mysterious disappearance, and relatable teen angst and romance, Coral's Reef weaves a tale that will delight readers young and old.
Really cute with very pretty full-colour illustrations. Coral is a teenager who loves surfing, hanging out with her friends and obsessing about boys. She’s also a sprite who might have special powers, not that anyone but her little sister believes it. Stories were about her everyday life, at school and on the beach, and two cute boys, one of whom is a player and the other who has a mean sister ready to spoil everything. The first volume ends at a surprise cliffhanger.
I received a free copy from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.
A standard high-school romance story, with some magical elements.
Minus one star for the "sister that ruins brother's relationships so she can creepily keep him to herself" trope. It's gross and weird, and young boys that see tropes like this repeated a thousand times in media use it as justification to be dicks to girls.
An amazing story about a young sea sprite, constantly drawn to the sea, and her daily adventures meeting friends and more. The world is full of other mythical people, like mermaids, nymphs, and so many more. There's definitely something different about her, especially since she finds her eye caught by a young fire ifrit. Loving the world creation and the characters!
Got sucked in by the cover and was expecting some cool sea story with depth. It's a shallow high school drama romance with a lot of high schoolers wearing inappropriate clothes. Like bikinis that are barely holding on and many shirtless boys. Tons of fan service of minors.
This book is so good! I love all of the powers that everyone has, and the drama, the school, but I really love Coral’s little sister! But…
Does anyone else think Ember is evil? I think Ember is evil. Or at least has bad intentions. Like, you guys saw her telling Nick Coral and Lance were in love, and blocking Coral. I’m telling you guys, she’s evil.
1.5/5 If you’re looking for fun shōjo shenanigans, this comic is great!! If you’re looking for an actual story of any kind..you’ll..kinda…get it. They were trying to do too much while also too little and ended up with a nothing burger of a book. Art’s beautiful, as everyone’s said, but it doesn’t carry the story at all.
(2.5) Art is bright and cute, but the plot falls in a weird middle ground. Typical high school drama but can't really tell what age group it's meant for, as the writing is really plain (I'm talking middle school level) yet makes some comments more for older teens/YA.
What a fun read kinda wish read in summer but that’s ok it was still fun. Very cute funny and just silly teen stuff but couldn’t put it down. I you like the show mako mermaids u would probably enjoy this graphic novel.
I loved this so much I couldn't put it down and read it in a day! Between the art, the character's, and the story, I genuinely cannot wait for the second one! The ending was not what I expected but exactly what I was hoping for!!
Got through 4 chapters/pg 120. The art was cute (liked the coloring, character designs, and reactions) but the story wasn't grabbing my attention. Especially wasn't into the love triangle they were setting up.
This was SO CUTE. The art is gorgeous, the characters and world are super fun and interesting, it has just the right amount of manga-style silliness, and I’m really interested in the deeper story this volume just touched on. PLEASE let this series be continued!!
Honestly, though... Despite the over-the-top adorable artwork that was just a few colors short of Lisa Frank, there wasn't much to it and didn't really hold my interest. The best part was Tammy the Sea Otter.
This book was so stinking cute. I mean I have a new series to obsess over. I fucking hate ember like hate her with a burning passion. I have to see how it continues. Also Nick and Coral are soooo cute
This was a cute little slice of life graphic novel, had boba teas, love interests, evil sister , funny jokes and I love the art in this book, boy talk, surfing, swim teams, and much more….I can’t wait to get a trophy for my shelf!! 😁😁
