Saturn Society #1

Time's Enemy

Rate this book
One unwanted gift.
Tony Solomon never wanted to be a time traveler. But a brush with death leaves him a time traveler—and an unwilling initiate in the Saturn Society, a secret society of those with his ability.

One great wrong.
Tony vows to use his gift to prevent his daughter’s murder—if he could figure out how. Never mind that this violates the Society’s highest law, branding him an Enemy for a crime he has yet to commit. Determined to thwart the Society, he seeks help from Charlotte, the woman whose life he saved decades before he was born.

One chance to make things right…
Tony jumps to 1933 in search of answers, but lands on the wrong side of the Society, a fugitive on the run. Thrilled, yet terrified to see her childhood hero, Charlotte offers him sanctuary…and unexpected love. But Charlotte hides a terrible secret: loyal to the Society, she must bring to justice those who manipulate time for their own gain. By sheltering Tony, she faces a terrible choice: condemn the man she loves and to whom she owes her life, or deny her deepest convictions by helping him escape, and risk sharing his sentence.

Not your typical time travel romance, Time’s Enemy creates a wonderful blend of romance and science fiction, an exciting adventure through time rich in action, romance, and history.

Jennette Marie Powell is the author of several time travel and paranormal romance novels. A lifelong resident of the Dayton, Ohio area, she likes to dig beneath the surface and find the extraordinary beneath the mundane, whether in people, places, or historical events. While she has no desire to change the past, she enjoys learning about local history, particularly the early 20th century. Her preferred places to time travel are from her computer or Dayton’s Carillon Historical Park. By day, she wrangles data and websites in between excursions to search for the aliens and spacecraft that legends say are stashed away on the military base where she works.

Jennette lives with her husband, daughter, two Rottweilers, and assorted small critters. When not working or writing, she enjoys spending time with her family, learning about local history, classic cars, and riding her Harley.

This was an ok book. I liked the story and the characters. There are plenty of emotions, some suspense, some twists, and an few Aha! moments. However, it did seem to take me forever to read this. I don't know if it has to do with how it was written, the story itself, or something else. This would be good for passing time, but it didn't really get me to the speed-reading level except at a few moments throughout. Also, (ARG!) this is a serial. Again, I didn't find out until I had finished the book. I think a lot of books say now, but this one didn't. For some reason, I felt as long as the book seemed to be, I should have gotten my happy ending. This was written well and kept my interest to a point, but I wouldn't read it again. I think it's just not my cup of...java/tea. Good Luck

Would have given it 4.5 stars if I could.

Time travel romance usually goes like this: a man or woman, through some mechanism, magic or device, travels back in time or into the future. Once they get there, they usually stay there for the duration of the book, learning to deal with their new circumstances and falling in love with someone from that time period along the way.

TIME’S ENEMY is not your typical time travel romance. It takes this general premise and gives it a science fiction edge, taking the reader on a page turning journey. Put it this way, if you take THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT, mix in THE TIME TRAVELER'S WIFE and sprinkle it with SOMEWHERE IN TIME, you’ll get this amazing book.

Time Travel Paradox
Powell uses this principle with deft skill and it’s the thing that makes this story shine. Any change in history, no matter how minor, can have dire consequences in the present/future. Every time Tony goes back in time, he does something (often unintentional) to alter history and when he returns, his present is altered because of it. It’s when he goes back in time to deliberately change the past that the Saturn Society steps in. He broke the rules and he must be stopped. Now he finds himself on the run, in the present and the past.

Not Your Typical Romance
Most romances have the hero and heroine meet within the first couple of chapters of the book. Not so here. The romance between Tony and Charlotte doesn’t even get started until the middle of the book. That’s a long time to wait in romance-land, but experiencing Tony’s journey getting there was well worth it. I love how the author portrays his confusion and desperation when he starts time traveling. He doesn’t understand what’s happening, he’s scared and disoriented, and has no control over where and when he goes (at least in the beginning).

Not Perfect, but Close
As I said before, I thought this was a page turner of a book. But it’s not without its flaws. There are a few points in the middle where the pacing drags in comparison to the fast paced beginning and ending; one chapter makes use of short, choppy scene breaks which bothered me; and the author has an affinity for using parentheses throughout the narrative, which was a bit jarring. I use them a lot myself (as you can tell), just not in my fiction writing. But these flaws were minor, and didn’t diminish the enjoyment of the book.

What Makes This A Perfect Indie Book
I’m pretty sure I know why this book didn’t sell to the NY Big 6. It’s a mix of romance, sci-fi, and paranormal fiction. I’m guessing editors and agents loved it, but just didn’t know how to market it. Like many indie books, this one didn’t fit in the tidy NY box, but it’s definitely one you don’t want to miss.

This is another author I found while I was at the Lori Foster Reader Author Get Together. I met her and Shawntelle Madison will waiting to take to another author who had a longer line. I have to admit that I was a bit afraid to read this series because it's set in Ohio, and for some reason I have the hardest time reading books set in my home state. However, I had nothing to worry about because this started off with a lot of action and didn't stop. I loved that this was not your typical time travel romance. It's told from a male's pov, and is a bit like the movie Jumper.

Tony Solomon was on vacation and was on top of a pyramid when he suddenly finds himself thousands of years in the past Without knowing why, he finds himself back in the present in the hospital. He's visited from a group from the Saturn Society, but before he can find out what they are about their representative gets thrown out by security. Tony returns home from vacation and thinks that what happened in the past was just a dream or something. Then he wakes up to find out he's two years in the past. He returns home without knowing quite how he did it, and is again visited by the Saturn Society who tells them that he's a time traveler now because of what happened to him in Mexico. He doesn't really want to believe them, but knows that there isn't any other explanation for what happened to him. He and his wife have become distant from each other since the death of his daughter, and when Tony realizes he can time travel his first thought is to travel back in time and stop her death. He's warned against it, but is determined to find a way to do it.
On one of his time travel trips he meets Charlotte, and saves her from a devastating flood. What I loved best about this was how accurate the descriptions of Dayton in the past were. There was a flood that pretty much wiped out everything in it's path, and the only thing that saved the town was NCR (National Cash Register Company) being on top of a hill, and they helped a lot of the survivors. It was nice seeing how much the town has changed over the years.

There is a romance involved in the book, but I actually enjoyed the time travel scientific parts better.(I know-I can't believe I said that either!) The romance however, was nicely done and I found myself cheering on the couple wanting them to find a way to be together. If you are looking for a different kind of time travel romance, then I highly recommend this one. :)

This is a wonderfully-paced book that brings all the best parts of Inception, Jumpers, and old-school time-travel romances and puts them together along with a little dash of Groundhog Day for good measure. If you liked Linda Howard's "Son of the Morning", "Time's Enemy" will fill your craving for the same densely-plotted adventure romance.

I was a fan of the old-school time travel romances that used to be put out by Zebra and Lovespell, but I was always disappointed they didn't go further into science fiction territory. Time's Enemy does. If you've been looking for that perfect hybrid between romance and science fiction, here it is. There's a good solid romance that's an integral part of not only the story, but the main character's life--Tony cannot be the same hero without the romance.

Balanced just so with the romance is a solid science fiction adventure that will please any fan of Dr. Who or Star Trek--the Saturn Society is an intriguing, complex, lightly science-based society of time travelers that grapples with both the ethics and logic of temporal paradox. Wrap that all in a well-researched, exciting adventure through time in Dayton, Ohio, and you get a fascinating, unputdownable story rich in action, romance, and history.

You'll want to read this one on your smartphone, because you'll be up all night with it and you don't want to bother your housemates. :). Formatting and editing are top notch and I experienced no problems whatsoever reading this on my smartphone (Android, Aldiko reader, epub format).

I will not repeat the synopsis for you, others have provided that beautifully at Amazon. I will just provide my review of the story.
"Time's Enemy" is not for the strict romance reader. This story has a little more violence and blood then many romance junkies are used to. It also hugs closer to the science fiction side of the story until you get closer to the end. Many men will find this story just as fascinating to read, so don't just pass it up as a "Ladies Only book". It is fast paced but sometimes you can get lost when the scene jumps from character and time jump. Stick with it. The only problem I had was one such scene gave away too much info as to who a character was. Until that time you had your suspicion and I would have liked a less contrived reveal. Maybe with the main character of Tony present. I understand though what the author was attempting, to provide us a glimpse of...2 happenings at the same time, at different points of time and space. Ms. Powell has constructed a
wonderful story that is just beginning. It will make you want to root for the hero and heroine and see them come together, come what may of, " the rules of Time Travel".

This is a wonderful book, very engaging. I read it in 2 days time.

I did get a little bit lost in one of the alternate presents, and in the chase in 1933, but overall it was pretty good.

I am very much looking forward to reading the second book in the series. And to finding out who "Alpha" is. Does Violet ever remember that she is Charlotte? When does Tony realize it? And why is Alpha so interested in Tony?

I loved this book!!! First read of this author but truly enjoyed the story. Being from the area in which her books take place it was an added bonus to know some of the history & places mentioned in this book. Can't wait to see what Tony & Violet are up to next. Will definitely read the next one.

The story line is a very innovative, but fell apart with unexplained stuff going on and I force read through it because I wanted answers - just to get stuck on a cliffhanger. Furthermore: the romance between the two protagonists - no sparks flying whatsoever. Sorry, won't fall for the next book in the series.

Time travel book

This time travel book keeps you in suspense throughout. Tony Solomon finds himself on top of a Mayan pyramid one day and then in a flood in Dayton, Ohio in 1933 the next day. He saves Charlotte's life in 1933 but tries to change fate. This is a huge no no during time travel. Read the book to find out how Tony escapes his own demise.

Intriguing story with some Dayton history included. Started slow, but picked up speed, especially when the couple got together. Not your typical romance, and apparently more to come in the next book - yes, she hooked me there - I want to know more.

I love time travel stories and sci fi. Nice plus that it's a romance, too. This is a page turner, kept me up late at night. The unique aspects drew me right in, as did the characters, historical settings, and nonstop suspense. I absolutely LOVED this book!

I really enjoyed this little time travel romance. I love how every time he went back to his time it was changed in some way. It seemed almost impossible to time travel without accidentally changing something.

Superb

I could put it down. So many travels so many twists. She has a real gift for putting so much detail without getting bogged down by the details. The differences of each jump and how it changed the string of time was fantastic! Will definitely recommend her to friends.

I love reading about time travel but this is definitely different than any time travel I've read. A few times I was confused until I figured it out and not sure I'll continue but I'm still interested in the outcome with Tony and Charlotte.
