just a major ick

This book started off really well. I was super into it. And then the last 30min of the book was just crashing and burning. If the plot and timeline itself was moved around or there was more in depth talk about it, it might’ve worked. Basically the ending is all Stockholm syndrome because he kept her. “Is he redeemable” not with this poor writing.

Well you know how it is - you see a quote on TikTok and can’t sleep so think sure! I will read a random dark romance book.

Without even going into the elements of this dark romance that were not for me, I would like to give you one quote to give you an idea of what to expect:

“Goodnight.” Then he turned, got back into his rocket ship, and flew away.

This book was not about aliens. Or space. Or even international travel. This book was so ridiculous to me that I could not stop laughing. And if I was reading a comedy book or even a rom com I might have expected that.

Anyways I will now fly away from this book and never impulse buy again. Peace out.

No

Spoilers. Rant. Warning, etc.

You know the drill.

I love MFM, MMF, reverse harem with and without MM. I've been a bit dazzled by my new toy (dark romance), so it's true that I haven't read that many this year.

But I've read them and I've enjoyed them.

That's because it's in the context of a 'couple'. They are all heroes/heroine.

This book starts with the heroine in a relationship with a 'bi' boyfriend, except he's openly cheating on her with men. She sees it as him exploring his sexuality but it's plain cheating.

When they go to a sex party so the boyfriend can be f*cked from behind for the first time as he's with the heroine, my first thought was "I'm sure the hero will snatch her up and lock her away while the boyfriend drowns in dicks or something."

As it is I was almost right! 🤯🤯🤯🤣

The hero does take her away while the boyfriend is literally getting chocked by two dicks.

EXCEPT

The hero first comes from behind as she's riding the boyfriend and f*cks the boyfriend

Yes. You read that right.

He f*cks the boyfriend (which, I remind you is the bf's FIRST TIME), makes him c*m and then takes the heroine away as he orders two lackeys to stay with the now very much ex-boyfriend.

Per the author's notes:

If you haven’t read the first edition of this story, please understand this is an extremely dark book. I think people aren’t expecting how very dark it suddenly becomes. But it does.
If you think you like dark but have only read “diet dark”, don’t start here.
Um… yes this ending was always intentional. It’s the entire reason I wrote this book. Is it unhinged, unexpected, and twisted? Yep. So is Xavier.
Xavier doesn’t grovel. Readers seem primed for some type of “redemption arc”. Nope, I don’t do that, either. If you like wussy, simpy men that beg their woman on their knees? I don’t write that. But if you love when the villain wins, I got you.

I had my holy water and comfort blanket in hand, ready for all that 'dark, darker, darkest unhinged' energy.

😐 ...
😐 ....
😐 .....
😐 ......
😐 .......

Are we calling sex with OM dark now? Is it because it's heroine + sex with OM combined with hero + sex with OM that makes it dark? 🤡🤡🤡

What is happening right now? Where's the toxic obsession?!?

I went to the author's website for all those warnings she didn't put on her notes because getting paid for the few pages a person reads before DNFing is better than putting a proper warning and having everyone drop this on the first page.

And behold my surprise. Sharing and ménage are not on the list. 🤯🤡🤡🤡

That such an important element for romance readers doesn't even get a token mention in the CW feels like slap to the face.

You can guess when I'm reading this author again, on the 30th of February 🤡

Goodreads doesn't provide the option for more than five stars so here are some more: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ (and here's a few more 🌶️🌶️🌶️)
Xavier's dick: 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

I LOVED this book. There was so much packed into it. The storylines are amazing. Just when I thought I'd figured out where Kitty was going with the plot, she slapped me around the face with something completely unexpected.

Xavier is 100% deranged and I love him for it. He's EXACTLY the type of deranged you want in a dark romance, because god help anyone else but you know he's fucking die for his woman.

Danger, Will Robinson!

I was prepared to give this four stars, but I REALLY didn't like the later chapters. At. All. There were parts throughout that were more abusive than dominating. I was willing to see the characters grow and overlook some of the sociopath vibes. For that to still be occurring as far into the book as it did was a giant turn off.

He confused me. One minute he was smacking me in the face; the next, he was exposing my innermost desires. This was moving too fast, and I was still unsure if he would chain me up in a dark basement underneath the ground somewhere.
-- Marissa Matlock

Xavier Cardell comes off as a creep early on, I started to like him a little before I just... nope. Can't do it.

Marissa Matlock showed esteem issues from the beginning. She was all right overall, but she was too weak of a character for my preferences.

Now, if you are just looking for a book with some really hot and freaky get togethers, the first half of this book just might work. I know it did all kinds of things for me.

This was my first time reading this author. I will consider trying her again with hopes that her storytelling improves.

WTF

Ok. Where do I even start. I think the explicit sex is supposed to distract you from the worst characters ever partially developed.
From creepy stalker/sociopath, to unrecognizable, whipped school boy, to psychopath, back to whipped to happily ever after?
I was legit expecting her to pretend to comply so she could escape and kill him.
Why is she so dumb?

Wow. I can’t believe I’m rating this book a 3 star but here we are…I have two very specific reasons why I’m annoyed and they each cost the book a star. Within the first like 15-20 pages something insane is going to happen involving Xavier the MMC. The more I kept reading the more I realized the specific event was completely irrelevant and didn’t reflect Xavier AT ALL. He is confronted about it once at some point and his reasoning is so fucking ridiculous. It was so lazy of the author, but fine whatever I was still LOVING the story so I let it go. Moved on. Enjoyed the nonstop steam and interesting interactions between the characters. Just when I thought “Ok there were some small bumps but I loved this book” BAM! There’s a couple of chapters towards the blissful ending I was expecting that enrages me. We were so fucking close! I feel personally assaulted. The writer screwed a perfectly good ending and made it BITTERsweet. The reaction of Xavier was completely left field and soooooo unnecessary. Again lazy writing. There were so many other dramatized options that would have been so much better. Instead Marissa was turned into a complete idiot. Perfectly good character development flushed down the toilet. Ugh, I haven’t been this annoyed by a book in a long time. So if you ignore the event at the beginning and end, that is the complete opposite of Xavier’s development this is a GREAT read. It starts off fast and strong. The spice is amazing. I think I’m officially a dark romance girly. I loved most of the intimate scenes even the ones that were out of my comfort zone. As uncomfortable as I was, I was just as intrigued. All the characters had flair and I will probably read the other books in this series at some point but I’m goin to need some time to forgive her because I disliked the ending. (I will probably come back and change it to 4 stars once I cool off)!

Ok if I’m being completely honest this book has been on my TBR for a bit…every time I’d see a post about it the book would move further up the list….Weeeellllll as soon as I got the ARC for Blue Film it was time to pull the trigger…now I’m mad at myself for waiting so long…I LOVED IT!!! But everyone at work thinks I’m a pervert because I wouldn’t let them read over my shoulder & I don’t care 😉 it just gave me something to talk to them about later & I’m pretty sure I’ve talked a few into buying it for themselves
As soon as James & Marissa received their invite to the Red Night party I knew there was going to be trouble…I was not wrong…James was a little to happy to explore his sexuality & Marissa was a little to eager to let him…I just wasn’t at all prepared for Xavier….that boy was so broken but kept up a good front….he was creepy but just the right amount if that’s even possible
I did get frustrated several times…James parents 🙄Marissas dad 😔 even Marissa & Xavier a time or two but those frustrating parts had to be in there…I didn’t throw my kindle so that a plus but I wanted to
Overall I loved it!!! & I can’t wait to see what’s next….I’m starting Blue Film tonight

Poorly done

That last 17% ruined what was up to that point an okay book.

I love dark romance. I love pushing boundaries. I love morally grey characters. Non-con and dub-con is my jam. Breeding kink? Gimme gimme.

Xavier was just creepy and I did not like him. There was nothing about his character that Marissa’s pov (because this entire thing is told from her pov) that made his character lovable. He reads like an abusive immature boyfriend that Marissa is gaslighted into being with.

Marissa herself was weak and what I mean when I say that is that she is a flat, one dimensional character.

The plot and story itself was also lacking. This story and the idea that was served could have been a 5 star read but it needs more substance, the plot and the characters need more fleshing out. For me, this was a poorly done dark romance.

*CHECK THOSE TRIGGERS*

Every quarter Theta Rho Zeta hold a Red night. Invitations are limited, masks are worn and condoms and toys are handed out like candy. Marissa & James are personally handed an invitation by the president of TRZ. James is very excited by this opportunity as is experimenting with his sexuality and Marissa is keen to help him. (These guys are a couple) The night goes exactly how they thought it would until it doesnt.

Xavier has his sights set on Marissa. And theres no telling him no. He is unapologetically the villain. Inputting himself into her life every way she turns. Surprising her with how he knows about her. Her secrets and dreams.

If Stockholm syndrome was a book, this would be it. Without realising it Marissa falls for Xavier. I think I did too. I could see those red flags waving high and was disgusted with him whenever we found something out but at the same time if he asked me Ass, pussy or mouth bent over a breeding bench (oh yes!!) id be like ‘Go. To. Town. Master” 🫣 (I think theres something wrong with me 🤣) when it was all explained at the end in Marissa’s head I thought okay. Hes okay. Fool. Was this a HEA?! I dont actually know!

The author said herself that the sex scenes carry the plot so go in with that mindset. The spice is 😮‍💨 and the twists as theyre uncovered had me questioning everything.

That ending though 😱🙌🏼

At the end of this book I’m kinda left speechless, all I know is that I freakin’ loved it. It constantly kept me on edge, I was always eager to know what was gonna happen next, and I am slightly obsessed with Xavier and his twisted ways, that man loves fiercely, and the way he loves Marissa, so much that he refuses to live without her and he’ll always do whatever he thinks is best to make her realise their endgame, has left my heart in a puddle.

I knew this book was gonna deliver on the spice, and it certainly did, but I was also hooked on the story and all the twist and turns that came with these two, the way Xavier was from the get go with his stalker ways and complete obsession had me in shock, it was crazy, he was crazy but I was hooked on that and was curious (and a little excited) about what he was gonna do next, his dirty talk was absolute fire, but the way spoke of how he was completely utterly and madly in love with Marissa, had me swooning for him and that even up being the reason he won my heart over ♥️🙌🏼

No.

One word. Simple and to the point. It doesn’t need an explanation and could have been used many times by the FMC to avoid literally being a human carpet for a man who actively wanted to ruin her life and does nothing but LIE and hide from her.

No.

There are trigger warnings in this book and they do talk about how there’s a lot of sensitive topics but this MMC literally abuses her endlessly and she either has the lowest self esteem in the world or she has Stockholm syndrome.

No.

Three hours of my life that I could have been sleeping wasted on a book that tried to have jump scare plot twists that made the book feel unreadable.

No.

You don’t connect or get to build any relationship with the characters because it’s such a thin amount of information about them. Who they are as people never appears in the book.

It was hot, so hot and spicy and I devoured this in one sitting. Xavier fell first and hard for Marissa and it was just perfect. He was a tad obsessive but did listen to Marissa when she was upset about something. While he did streamline their relationship in the beginning, he was what she was missing and her ex was just not it. The spicy scenes were something new and exciting to me. A change of pace to the current books I am currently reading, in the best of ways. I can’t wait to continue this series

✨”I need you to understand something …You’re mine now. If you want to interrupt your little friend so he can take you home, that’s fine. For tonight.”

“Who do you think you are?”

“The man who owns you now, kitten. So be a good girl and break things off…”

✨The way I absolutely LOVED this book! Red Night by Kitty King was my first read by this author and it will not be my last!

❤️I listened to Red Night 🎧 on audio as I followed along 📖 and let me tell yall, you do not want to miss this fantastic audiobook and story!🎧❤️The narrators were both absolutely perfect bringing Marissa and Xavier to life!

✨The MMC is dark, utterly obsessive, swoony, and oh so very possessive! He has his own agenda in pursing our FMC, and quickly realizing that he has being pulled into her orbit, unable to escape his own feelings.

❤️I loved the vulnerability Marissa was able to express, her emotional growth and healing, the turbulent progression of their relationship, the uncovering of motives, plans, and watching both of their dreams unfolds.

✨Dark Romance
✨St@lker Vibes
✨All the Feels & Spice

❤️Red Night is available NOW on audio and I definitely recommend checking it out!

I have absolutely been loving every moment of this story! The characters, their chemistry, all of it! This is a new to me author and I will definitely be checking out more of her book! Loving both of the incredible narrators as well!

I ended the book at 56%. I couldn’t find the strength to read this bullshit. I felt angered by the fact that he had sex with her ex, that simply didn’t seem appealing to me. Even if it was a threesome. I hated this book.

WHAT ON EARTH IS GOING ON IN THE HOUSE OF COMMONS
- this was me all throughout the book

disclaimer: i read this book thanks to tiktok

like i said i knew i didn't signed up for a sweet and nice romance, but like, this is worse than i imagined?

at first, i wanted to give up, but then i thought about you, my fellow readers, and said "i have to do this for them!!!", so here i am

i decided to read this book because i wanted to read the third book of this series of stand-alones but boy did i know what i was getting myself into

the story had potential, it started off pretty well, but, at some point, it all became a big fat mess
- there are many scenes that don't make sense or are there for god knows what reason
- all the events are pretty rushed
- some dialogues seems between children or teenagers

*answering the author's question in the plot*
Xavier cannot be redeemed, i mean maybe at first he could have been?
AT FIRST, he wasn't really a stalker, he was just an angry guy to revenge his family and gather information to do so, but then things escalated in the worst possible way, especially in the last 20% of the book, and i was like "bro wtf?" *strong side-eye*

really, the story had a strong potential if the writing was less like a teenager on wattpad and it didn't have some of the scenes it has

i don't know if i'll end reading the other books because this really turned out to be something else from what i imagined
i might read them for fun and to see how the author takes things but i honestly don't know

Through ups and downs love prevails

Kitty is absolutely amazing. This book was on the shorter side of a read but there's so much going on in the book that it all just works. The story has stalker/obsessive vibes that made Xavior more endearing to me.

What started as revenge turned into a love story with all the bumps and bruises. The Red Night Event changed Marissa, James, and Xavior's path in life. Some paths were revealed while other's were presented with beautiful opportunities that evolved throughout the story.

I highly recommend reading the content and trigger warnings. There are elements of BD$M, childhood trauma, and growing up with tragedy and heartache. I could definitely use a whole lot of Xavior manliness in my life.

My only unanswered question or unknown is what was going on with Ella towards the ending other than that, I absolutely loved this story. Definitely a recommended read.

This was absolute fire the spice was fantastic, best I’ve read in a while. Xavier is a huge alphahole, controlling, jealous and devious all those red flags you absolutely love in these sort of books. At times I want to shout but… my heart broke for him too. Marissa had a good strong back bone and definitely stood her ground in the right places. Marissa is dating James and she’s happy… but he wants to explore his sexuality and experiment with men to “see how he likes it.” She’s a supportive girlfriend and wants this for him but when James is invited to the infamous ‘Red Night’ at Theta Rho Zeta by the president himself, Xavier Cardell, he convinces Marissa to go with him and they plan to explore his fantasy, with rules of course. When ‘Red Night’ comes along and Xavier invites the couple to his room where it’s invitation only, not only does James get what he’s always wanted, but Marissa gets one-on-one time with Xavier and he mind is literally and figuratively blown. From that moment on, Xavier has staked his claim and even though it takes Marissa some time to catch up, their relationship blooms into something everyone envies! Until secrets are revealed and a monster comes out to play. What will Marissa do when she is faced with her past? What does Xavier really want from her?

“Red Night” by Kitty King was my introduction to King’s colorful world and now that I am finished, I am DYING for the rest of the stories on this ‘rainbow colored’ universe. “Red Night” is sexy, daring, intense and heartwarming. The spice level is OFF THE CHARTS and the MMC, Xavier Cardell, is every girls dream. He is obsessive and possessive of our FMC, Marissa, to the point where he is sort of a stalker? but he is forgiven with how attentive and in love he is with Marissa. I mean he did meet her mother and read all her diaries without her knowing but I mean, there are worse things 🤣

“Red Night” sucks you in pretty quick with the description of the infamous Red Night at Northview University and the spice hitting QUICK. Uh, do fraternities like this actually exist? 😅 The world King paints for us is sexy, sure, but there are some intense underlying issues that drive the plot of the book. The FMCs boyfriend at the start of the book is into “experimenting” and exploring his feelings about men and the Red Night was the time he wanted to do that and basically blew up their relationship. This is where Xavier steps into Marissa’s life… well, not for the first time because of MMC has stalker tendencies. King revealed another horrible secret that is threaded throughout the story line and is what ultimately brings our MCs together. It’s dark and was certainly a surprise to me, so get ready for that!

“By attending Red Night, you consent to viewing and participating in any sexual activities that may occur.”

“You don’t have to call me your God, kitten. Master or sir or daddy will do just fine.”

Blurb:

SHE THOUGHT IT WAS JUST ONE NIGHT... HE KNEW HE WAS NEVER LETTING HER GO.

If you enjoyed Rina Kent's Royal Elite series, you will love Red Night: Xavier's Delight.

Marissa Matlock and her boyfriend are handed a bright red envelope from the mysterious president of Theta Rho Zeta inviting them to the fraternity’s scandalous Red Night event, one they know is filled with debauchery. Attending in hopes of discovering her secret desires, Marissa unwittingly draws the obsession of a dark predator. Now, she is unable to escape Xavier’s thrall.

As her attempts to avoid him fail, Xavier’s twisted plans only ensnare her tighter into his trap. Once she finds out the true reason behind his games, things take a dangerous turn. Will Marissa be able to subvert Xavier’s control? Does she even want to?

“I need you to understand something, Marissa. You’re mine now.”

Thoughts:
I am literally speechless after reading this book! I don’t even know where to even begin. This book was EVERYTHING! Xavier Cardell is a whole type of different energy that I was totally drawn to from the beginning!! He officially has taken the Daddy spot for my book boyfriend. The plot was amazing but the spice, OMG the Spice, was mind-blowing! I have never blushed so hard, forgot to breathe at times and smiled from ear to ear as I did throughout this whole book. Xavier obsession with Marissa was on a whole other type of level but I was here for it. I can go on and on about this book because that’s how much I loved it but you literally have to read it for yourself to experience the obsessive alpha-hole who just wants to loved by his obsession. Trust me when I say he will do everything to get it too! I highly recommend this book! You seriously will thank me for it. 😉

And as always lets talk about the the plot twist! I was not expecting that at all.. 🫢🤯

“That’s it, kitten. Worship your god, my c^ck. Mmm, I can tell your cravings have set in.”

It’s a no from me…

Listen, I don’t generally leave 1 or 2 ⭐️ reviews. If a book is a 1 or 2, I’ve usually DNFd it. I tried with this one, though, I really did. There were parts of the story that seemed like it would be decent, but then the MMC would jump the shark and do something ridiculous.

There’s a lot that can be said about this book, but one of the main things that was off-putting was the lack of communication and consent. I’m all for CNC and even some non-con, but there was zero conversation about the dynamics of their relationship. The degradation and humiliation notwithstanding, there should have been some kind of discussion when it came to impact play and bondage. Clear boundaries and consent with any kind of BDSM. Period.

And don’t even get me started on the dungeon/Stockholm Syndrome. That’s straight up abuse. The author really needs to consider expanding the trigger/content warning page. I’m not going to yuck anyone’s yum, but this should have been handled better.

I also did not appreciate how the bi boyfriend situation was written. Why did he have to be bi to attempt to add to the plot? He essentially uses the FMC all throughout their relationship to have “experiences”. It feels like the author made him bi as a way to be able to say they wrote LGBTQ content, but the whole situation comes across fake. He just as easily could have been a straight character who cheats (because that’s essentially what happens at the end).

There were also a whole bunch of side characters that are just filler. Including the families of both MMC and FMC.

Honestly I could go on and on, but what I all comes down to is that this feels very much like a brain dump/first draft. The beginning was decent and the author could have had something here, but it just didn’t come together in the end.
