Transformative Negotiation: Strategies for Everyday Change and Equitable Futures

Rate this book
A contemporary guide to negotiation that centers an understanding of power

Transformative Negotiation advances an understanding of power and oppression as core to negotiation, arguing that negotiation is central to social mobility and social change. Bringing theory into action, the book explores the real-world examples that Sarah Federman’s own students bring to class, such as negotiating with courts to get their kids back or with the IRS to reduce late fees.

Federman explains how heritage, ethnicity, wealth, gender, age, education, and other factors influence what we ask for and how people respond to our requests, as well as what is at stake when we negotiate. This book provides tools to help readers gain confidence in their everyday negotiation skills and link personal success to social transformation.

Transformative narrative by Sarah Federman is definitely a practical book for our daily interactions with others. The numerous tools and examples provided by the author will help you release your negotiation potential for the better. I personally resonated with the utterances of Takia Ross in the book that we should not spend more than 48 hours mourning on lost opportunities. Another key point you will get from it is about emotion management during negotiations, which can help you secure the outcome of a negotiation without engaging in a power struggle or giving your counterpart the feeling of having been taken advantage of.
Furthermore, if you need to level up your financial education and keep control over your assets, this book is for you! Also, if you had trouble advocating for yourself when negotiating about money, as I used to, you would not miss this opportunity to educate yourself and improve your financial situation.
Reading this book was also eye-opening to me as regards my communication drawbacks. It has improved the way I write my emails since then. As a result, I now take the time, for clarity purposes, to update consistently the subject when engaging in a thread of emails.
However, I would have liked the book to devote more attention to collective bargaining, such as that involving labor unions for example.

This is a MUST READ for anyone teaching negotiation or conflict resolution/management! As a researcher developing a negotiation empowerment learning experience for multicultural individuals, I found Sarah Federman's book extremely useful! She provides many activities, reflection questions, and design elements for creating a curriculum that resonates with those who are not typically represented in out-of-the-box negotiation courses. Sarah writes in a very clear and easy-to-read format (one of the easiest books to get through). My team will be leveraging her tools and insights in our work. Thank you, Sarah, for doing and sharing this work!

Interesting Book

Although I am not the target audience for this book because I am privileged, Transformative Negotiation is a worthwhile read, especially for those who are not as fortunate as I am. Negotiation styles and techniques that work in more upscale or sophisticated environments may not work for those who are disadvantaged in challenging environments. Transformative Negotiation helps to provide a different set of negotiation skills for those who need them most.

This is so much more than a negotiation book. Federman worked with her students in Baltimore to produce accounts of everyday negotiations from the margins. The result is a page-turner--anchored to an assemblage of gripping, sad, wryly funny stories--with the potential to reset the entire field of negotiation.
