I have been reading these books a chunk at a time. By purchasing them when they are grouped together like this...it is really hard to put them down and go to something else. It is like eating one of my guilty pleasures, Honey Dijon Kettle Chips. You pour a few out and before you realize it, you have finished the bag...

But I Digress...

By having entries 11-15 right there in your hot little hands...It becomes natural to just keep reading until there isn't any more to read.
The pull to pick up right where Eve and Roarke have left off is too enticing. Robb purposely leaves little hints and threads at the end of each tale to tease the reader to desperately want to know more. Because these books were released 2 a year...having them together like this is a delight.

We are able to experience the growth of all the characters...the arcs of Eve and Roarke are a thing of beauty. Robb must have an amazing character bible for this couple. Her backstories for each is so layered, it is one of the main reasons she is able to keep our interest. What makes this more than the usual is Robb also spends the same care with secondary characters. When she decides to spotlight one of them, she gives us enough emotions and quirks for us to understand them as well.

I started reading this series in December 2019. So far I have read 15...I may take a mini-break but I know, it won't be for long. Eve and Roarke have burrowed deep in my heart and I will be back with them soon.

This set of stories is more varied than the earlier ones, with greed and revenge and other mundane motivations driving the plots. JDR has perfected the balance of plot, character development, and smexy good times. The last one (Purity) is the best of this bunch.

Only 40+ more to go...

This series just gets better with each book. The cases are all different and interesting. But the personal relationships between the characters are what makes this series special. Eve, Roarke, Peabody, McNab, Mavis, Feeney, Trueheart have all become favorites - their own family.

I think the best thing about this series is that it stars a happily married couple, who still has legit arguments and disagreements but loves each other.

And a kick ass woman (or two, or three, or four) who is strong and awesome.

This is a really convenient way to catch the older parts of the series, and I've really relied on the collections since Ive had to download from my public library. I've also left reviews for the individual books. What a GREAT series.

Just gets better and better

Christian Grey has nothing on Roarke who matches him in wealth, power, charisma, mystery and looks. Roarke's leg up...he's Irish. Enough said.

Judgment in Death:

I think I remember this one. It’s the sergeant? Maybe? Sergeant Clooney who lost his son in the line of duty? Hmm. We’ll see.
Wait, wait, wait…the thirty pieces of silver left with the body…that’s how it ties into the death of the sergeant’s son…Judas, betrayal

Always loved Mavis:

Eve’s mouth fell open. “Stupid? You’re saying I was stupid? You’re supposed to tell me I was right. That’s how this works.” “Dallas.” Mavis leaned over, then slid gracefully to the floor. “You didn’t figure the man factor. They got dicks. You can’t ever forget the dick when you’re dealing with a man.”

HAHAHA - Ah yes, this is the one where Webster from IAB and Roarke do some clashing. Lol 😆

“You matter. You always have.”
She slapped both hands on his chest, felt the rapid pump of his heart. The heat. “Jesus, Webster. Are you crazy?”
“I’d prefer that you take your hands off my wife before I break them,” Roarke said from the doorway. “But either way works for me.”

“He didn’t seem to care. He sort of backed me into a corner, and I couldn’t seem to . . . Then he, hmmm, he . . .”
“Oh.” Mira felt something flutter in her belly. “I see.”
“No, no, he didn’t punch me or anything.”
“That’s not what I thought. He . . . made love to you.”
“No. That’s not the way it was. He just took me over. I wasn’t going to stand for it. I told myself I wouldn’t, but I was . . . Damn it, I was aroused, and he knew it, and he was ripping my clothes and we were sort of struggling a little, then we were on the floor and I was ripping his clothes and we were on each other like animals or something. I couldn’t stop him, or myself, or any of it, and I didn’t want to because, God, I was so hot I’d have let him eat me alive.”
“Oh my,” Mira managed.
“I shouldn’t have told you.” Mortified, Eve squeezed her eyes shut. “What was I thinking?”
“No, no, sweetheart, that was a very unprofessional reaction, and I apologize. But it was a very female one.” And she thought her husband was going to be quite delighted with the aftereffects of this heart-to-heart with Eve.

Side note, I think Webster ends up with Roarke’s head of security at his Olympus Resort. Maybe?

Love the ending!!

Betrayal in Death:

“It’s just this thing with him and Peabody.”
Feeney hunched his shoulders. “I don’t want to think about that.”
“Well, me neither.” But if she was going to suffer, so was he. “He took her to a girl movie.”
“What?” Feeney paled, and the nut currently in his mouth almost rolled off his tongue. “He went to a skirt movie? Took her?”
“That’s what I said.”
“Ah, Christ.” He got off the desk, took a quick turn around the room on short, bandy legs. “That’s it, you know. That’s the finish. Boy’s sunk. Next thing you know he’ll be picking her flowers.”
“Already done.”
“Don’t tell me this shit, Dallas.” He turned back, basset hound eyes pleading. “Don’t put this business in my brain. Isn’t it bad enough I know they’re, you know, getting naked together?”
“Nobody listens to me about this.” She nodded, pleased to have found a like mind. “Roarke thinks it’s sweet.”

Interesting that here, book twelve, I’m hitting a stumble on remembering the story and who the “baddie” is. I expect that’ll happen more often as I continue this massive re-read project.

Aw, I love seeing Crack at the Down and Dirty!

It’s lovely in these beginning stories, where Roarke is always involved in some manner, to watch their relationship really grow. Some of this is missing thirty books down the line. A shame, really.

This is the book where Roarke first becomes expert consultant, civilian! And the first interaction between Eve and Feds.

It’s always hilarious to watch Eve completely freak out when Peabody gets emotional. Oh, I hated the fight she and McNab had that broke them up for a while. Honestly, though? I empathized with McNab. Aw, I’d forgotten about Eve taking Peabody out for ice cream so she could listen to her woes, and then Eve actually gave her advice.

I want to say I think the big time movie actresses son has something to do with this? Maybe?

Oh my. I’d forgotten about Summerset almost getting taken by the baddie, then voluntarily coming to Eve’s office to inform her of what happened, and then Roarke coming in, them arguing, Roarke firing Summerset, Eve getting in the middle… GASP 😱 So exciting.

“They’re like family, huh?” Peabody said as she got into the car. “Hey! That makes you sort of like Summerset’s daughter-in-law.”
Horror drained all color from Eve’s cheeks. All she could do was press a hand to her stomach. “Jesus, I feel sick.”

I love Trina and the fact that she scares the shit out of Eve. *cackling maniacally*

But I got a question. How come you insult me?”
“Insult you? I was about to kiss you.”
“How come you don’t take care of my work? Look at you.” Trina aimed a finger, tipped by a one-inch sapphire nail. “You look like something dragged under a maxibus. Skin’s all tired, circles under your eyes.”
“I’ve been working.”
“What’s that got to do with it? You can’t take five minutes twice a day to show some respect for my work? When’s the last time you used that exfoliant I gave you, or the pump lotion, or the stress repair?”
“Ah . . .”
“Bet you haven’t had time to rub on the breast cream either.” She turned on Roarke. “Some reason you can’t slap some on your hands before you feel her up?”
“I do try,” he said, throwing Eve to the wolves without a qualm. “She’s a difficult woman.”
“Let me see your feet,” Trina demanded, rounding the desk. Eve Dallas, who had faced death and spit in its eye, went into full retreat. “No. My feet are fine.”
“Haven’t used the pedia-care kit, have you?” Then Trina’s eyes, with their rainbow lids and gold lashes, widened in shock. “Did you cut your hair?”
“No.” Eve grabbed it with a protective hand, nearly stumbled over the chair.
“Don’t you lie to me, girlfriend. You took the scissors to it, didn’t you?”
“No. Not exactly. Hardly at all. I had to do it. It was getting in my eyes. I barely touched it. Damn it.” She decided it was time to plant her feet. “It’s my hair.”
“It is not your hair, not once I’ve had my hands in it. Do I come down to your police station and strut around with a badge on my tit, or go out on the streets and hunt up bad guys so I can kick their ass? No! And this is what you do not do. You do not, ever in this lifetime or the next, mess with my work.” Trina heaved a breath. “Now, I’m going down and getting my kit so I can deal with the mess you’ve made of yourself.”
“That’s nice, really, but I don’t have time for—” Eve winced as Trina fisted her hands on her hips. “That would be great. Thanks.”
When Trina strode out, Eve stepped up to Mavis, gave her a hard look, and took her wine. She downed it, then scowled at her friend and her husband. “The first one who smirks eats this glass.”

Ah shit. I’d forgotten that Mick died taking a knife meant for Roarke. 😢

Excellent addition to the series!

Seduction in Death:

Yay, got Morris’s name right in this one!

One of the best things about this author, in either guise, is her ability to write truly marvelous dialogue.

Dochas, Gaelic for hope, is introduced here…the shelter Roarke is starting for abuse victims/children, etc. I forgot he hadn’t told Eve about it because he wasn’t sure if it would upset her, seeing as he’s doing it because of her and her past.

Oh yes! Now, I know. Two wealthy young men and their game! I remember this one now. Despicable men.

They fed each other, and found in each other the only one who understood that they were beyond the common and ordinary rules that governed society.

This is the book where Charles and Louise meet for the first time.

I’d forgotten about McNab going to Charles’s, while Louise was there, and fighting over Peabody because McNab believes Charles threw her over for Louise. McNab is defending her honor. And then Peabody and McNab getting back together. *sigh*

I love Morris. So, so, so much!

“Gee, Morris, did I wake you up?”
“What is this, you never sleep so no one else is allowed to? What the hell time is it?”
“Time to do a friend a favor.” When he sat up, shifted, Eve winced. “Man, either block video or watch the sheets, will you?”
“Despite male propaganda, I can officially attest that one man’s balls are pretty much the same as another’s.” But he twitched the sheets back up to his waist. “But when you fantasize about me later, and you will, make it good. Now, what do you need?”

Loved the interrogation at the end of this book. Sometimes they’re better than others and these were a doozy!

OH AND THE SCENE IN WHITNEY’S OFFICE WITH THE STUPID DETECTIVE WHO THOUGHT HE COULD FILE A COMPLAINT AGAINST DALLAS? SHE KICKED HIS ASS!!!

“There’s my response to this. On record. You idiot,” she said to Renfrew. “I was going to let it slide. That was my mistake. Nobody should let cops like you slide. You think the badge is some sort of protection for you? Some sort of hammer you can toss around? It’s your fucking responsibility, your goddamn duty, not your cushion and not your weapon.”

Aw, Commander Whitney: “I’ve never been a witness to you dressing down an officer—heard rumors,” he added. “Now I can safely say you’ve earned your rep.

Reunion in Death:

This is the book where Peabody’s parents come to visit!

OH! THIS IS THE BOOK WHERE EVE FALLS A LITTLE IN LOVE WITH MR. MIRA 😍

She recognized Mira’s husband though they’d rarely had personal contact. He was tall and gangly, a kind of comfortable scarecrow in a baggy cardigan and wrinkled slacks. His hair was pewter, a wild, interesting mop tangled around a long face that was somehow both scholarly and innocent.
He carried a pipe, and his sweater was misbuttoned.
He smiled, his eyes, the color of winter grass, puzzled. “Hello. How are you?”
“Ah. Fine. I’m sorry, Mr. Mira, I shouldn’t be disturbing you at home. I was just—”
“You’re Eve.” His face cleared, warmed. “It takes me a minute. Recognized your voice. Come in, come in.”
“Actually, I should—” But he reached out, gripped her hand, and pulled her in the door. “Didn’t realize you were coming by. Can’t keep track. Charlie!” He shouted toward the steps. “Your Eve’s here.”
The protest died in Eve’s throat at the idea of the elegant Mira being called Charlie.
“Come sit down. I think I was fixing drinks. Mind wanders. Drives Charlie crazy. Ha-ha.”
“I’m interrupting. I’ll just see Dr. Mira tomorrow.”
“Yes, there’s the wine. I was sure I brought it in. I’m sorry, help me out. Are we having dinner?”
He was still holding her hand, and she could find no polite way to tug free. And he was smiling at her with such amiable confusion and humor, she fell just a little bit in love.
“No, you weren’t expecting me at all.”
“Then what a nice surprise.”

I’d forgotten this part where she goes to Texas to interview someone, and she and Roarke go to Dallas. Find the alley she hid in, where the cops found her, and the hotel she was staying at with her dad…where she killed him. Emotional scene this one.

Aw, they celebrate their first anniversary during this story.

Excellent ending with Eve and the murderer doing hand-to-hand combat, falling off terraces, landing on people glides, etc. Definitely the most action-packed ending…at least to date.

Purity in Death:

Love the groove that Eve starts having with the bullpen. First Baxter…

Hey, where’s your shadow?”
“My shadow?”
“The inestimable Peabody. She’s looking pretty good these days.”
“A knothole in an oak tree looks good to you, Baxter.”
“Only after a very long, very hard day.

Jamie Lingstrom is back! A little older, but still a genius kid with a smart mouth.

Oh, I remember all this back and forth PR bullshit Eve gets forced down her throat on this case. Nut job group infecting computers to kill off people they believe have made a mockery of the justice system.

And this is the first time where Eve and Roarke truly explore their differences in morality. It’s fascinating.

“We can’t think just the same on this issue.”
“I know that. I guess it shouldn’t bother me. But it does. Damn it, Roarke, it does.”
“So I see. I can’t be pure for you, Eve.”
“I don’t want that. This whole thing has me tangled up. Maybe because I can’t feel pity for someone like Fitzhugh or George either. I can’t feel it, and at the same time I’m outraged, I’m insulted that anyone, anyone felt they had the right to sit back and push a button that murdered them. Then call themselves guardians.”
“I’m not saying you’re wrong. I don’t believe you are. But my morals, we’ll say, are more flexible than yours. Even so, to make myself clear to you as you seem to need it, I don’t subscribe to their means, their methods, or their agenda. If and when you confront evil, you do it face-to-face and hand-to-hand.”

THIS IS WHEN MAVIS TELLS EVE SHE’S PREGNANT!! Oh how the next months bring such fun…especially when Mavis and Leonardo tell Eve and Roarke they want them in the delivery room. 😂

“I’m knocked up.”
“Fine. We’ll cover that. We can—” Her brain simply went on hold, as if someone had flicked a switch that shut down all the circuits. When it clicked back, there seemed to be some sort of blip blanking out basic reasoning functions. “What did you say?”
“I’m knocked up.” Mavis let out a snorting laugh, then slapped her hands over her mouth. Her eyes, as purple as her shoes today, danced like a pair of chorus girls.
“You’re . . . You . . .” Stunned into stammering, Eve stared at Mavis’s bare midriff, at the trio of belly dangles that sparkled from her navel. “You got something growing in there?”
Her hands still over her mouth, Mavis nodded rapidly. “A baby.” The laugh spurted through her fingers. “I’ve got a baby in there. Is that the ult? Is that beyond the beyond? Feel!” She snagged Eve’s hand and pressed it to her belly.
“Oh, Jesus. Maybe I shouldn’t touch it.”
“It’s okay, it’s all padded and everything. What do you think?”

She only grinned. “We made a baby. Me and Leonardo made a baby. I’m going to be the best mommy, Dallas. I’m going to totally rock.”
“Yeah.” Eve ran her hand over the thick, colorful braids. “You will.”

I’d forgotten all the intricacies of this story. McNab getting hurt and potentially paralyzed; the mayor being blackmailed; the wrong cop and his girlfriend in child services. Lot of shit going down. This one is depressing but important.

Still Tasty

It always amazes me how strong a writer J D Robb is. And how prolific —which can make her public feel both special and spoiled. Getting to read the series in an omnibus like this is a wonderful treat. One can glom onto the stories and know they are being read in order, minus a few events from the novellas.

Eve and Roarke become more substantial with each book, and being able to delve in, again, and know the next one is already in your hands; nirvana. The cases, the personalities, the cast make for a rich getaway.

Next stop would be Portrait In Death...that’s a clue;-)

It's 2059...

And we're immersed in valiant Eve and powerful Roarke's intense world of murder, passion, conspiracy, opulence, grit, blood and justice. These stories grab you and entertain you. I highly recommend reading this series in chronological order, as the characters evolve and develop, beginning with book one, Naked in Death.

Only Nora Roberts can weave a story that includes murder mystery, humor, and romance! She stays true to her characters with every "In Death" novel she pens under her pseudonym of J.D. Robb.

Excellent!

So far this series is the only murder mystery series that I enjoy enough to read again & again.

The way Eve thinks is just as fascinating to me as it is to her husband, Roarke. & the dynamics between those 2 are excellent to read also.
