Edith Mary Pargeter, OBE, BEM was a prolific author of works in many categories, especially history and historical fiction, and was also honoured for her translations of Czech classics; she is probably best known for her murder mysteries, both historical and modern. Born in the village of Horsehay (Shropshire, England), she had Welsh ancestry, and many of her short stories and books (both fictional and non-fictional) were set in Wales and its borderlands.
During World War II, she worked in an administrative role in the Women's Royal Naval Service, and received the British Empire Medal - BEM.
Pargeter wrote under a number of pseudonyms; it was under the name Ellis Peters that she wrote the highly popular series of Brother Cadfael medieval mysteries, many of which were made into films for television.
Ellis Peters is a legendary author who has set new standards for history-based mysteries in her 'Brother Cadfael' novels. These, shrter stories of more general and generic 'crime' variant, were nowhere close to those standards, I'm afraid. Almost two-thirds of this book have been taken up by bloated overwritten pieces composed for magazines catering to some very specific tastes, it seems. Thereafter we come across some truly competently written stories. The level goes up significantly in the titular case of the Trinity Cat. Some other stories of wry humour and crime pass by smoothly. Then the book ends. Alas, I think it would have been better for me to stick to the Cadfael series.

This is just a review of the short story called The Trinity Cat. An old woman is beaten to death when she interrupts a burglary in progress. She had just returned from Christmas shopping and her jewelry and purse were taken. The cat finds her purse buried in the snow. It turns out that the woman bought the cat a catnip toy and the thief took it, mistaking it for a drawer sachet. The cat leads the police to the killer, a young woman in the village who has both the catnip and the jewelry. A clever story.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
An elderly woman is killed on Christmas Eve night and a cat leads the search for the culprit. Clever. It shows a cat in behavior that a cat would perform; there is nothing supernatural or above usual cat intelligence in the story. A product of a good storyteller.
Just when you think you have it solved, you're wrong. Then ... you're wrong again. Then you get to the end of the story and you think "but of course. That was great!" Highly recommended. I love Ms. Peters stories: short and long.
