the characters just took in strangers without laying down the law on what would be expected of them. too much cooking and coffee serving going on from an endless cache was unrealistic. the characters were the standard list required for a long series, too predictable. Why wasn't the first plan to use the extra people to get in the harvest? Was this a three column assignment? I think column 1 gave us a farm family, the ham operator, the gang leader, and nutty girl, column three the farm to house everyone, the invasion of the property, and the dad getting killed so the younger generation can defend the homestead and pairbup. The end had to be rescuing the girl , daughter, or mom and the farmhouse burning. Too predictable.
This started out well, even with the common disaster elements of people far from home, trying to get home and then the usual criminal gang that wants to dominate. The writing tended to be very choppy at times and there were some editing issues with grammar, punctuation etc. There were some decent characters like John and Amanda who was able to hold her own in defending herself and the others. Unfortunately, trying to survive the EMP and the hostile intents of the gang took a backseat to the simmering love interest of Jonah and Amanda. The people who had prepared for disaster kept making bad decisions, mostly in an emotional moment. And why have Amanda try to lay low and pretend to be someone else to make the gang leader think she was dead, if she was going to give martial arts lessons to some of the women and everyone kept hollering her name? I'm on the fence about book 2 since I'm not sure that I care about what happens.
I've never left a bad review before. I'm surprised this book made it into the Oct Fall series. It was very amateurishly written, and It needed a good editing to start. The first few chapters hardly made sense. Please stick to the regular writers!
The progression was choppy and incomplete. Characters and events popped in and out, unexplained and awkward. I love this series, but this is a clinker.
I am a fan of post-apocalyptic fiction and DJ Cooper does a great job. Admittedly the editing could have been better. The books are usually so much better edited but the story doesn't change. This author knows the apocalypse and those who like it. There are flawed. Like, really FLAWED characters, they do dumb stuff like 90% of people would do but somehow come through. This is more realistic than most of the books in this series, though I've love them. The author does not pull punches on the levels of dumb things but uses it as a lesson to us reading it about bad choices. This is her M.O. in most of her books and since she is such a prominent figure in the preparedness world it is no wonder she puts those prepper things in there to teach us. I love Amanda... she kicks ass!
I have enjoyed everything else in this series, some more than others, but I found this book choppy and the characters unlikable. I finished this book, but don't intend to read any others nor anything else by this author.
Enjoyed the storyline. Good characters. Story was easy to follow and had good detail. Would have liked to have seen a relationship between Jonah and Amanda developed more.
I've read nearly all of this series and have enjoyed most of them. This one is so badly written that I will not read the next book. In fact it was so bad that I should get my three dollars back.
Anybody knows that you're going to be attacked by an enemy Constantly Then you must attack them 1st And put it into it. It's the bad guys know how to make bombs I'm sure the good guys could figure it out too.
Reading the positive reviews makes me wonder if we actually read the same book. I loved the series, some authors are better than other but they were all worth reading, until this one. This read like a young adult love story that had no editing or proof reading. Characters popped in an out for no reason, there was no knowledge about firearms, EMP's or survival. This book is not worthy of being a part of this series.
Great book. This series has definitely been one of the best, with authors collaborating the many books of the series. I must say this one really is a great addition. Looking forward to the next book.
